The giants are being cut down to size with alarming regularity. Bobby Zamora’s at the death volley, sweetly struck inside Wojciech Szczesny’s near post, was another blow applied to the Premier League’s big boys. This was just the latest in a line of recent upsets that have seen United, City and Chelsea lose to middle ground opponents as the New Year programme continued to provide Fantasy managers an unpredictable passage into 2012.

The Craven Cottage result also marked the end of another unremarkable day in Fantasy terms. Robin Van Persie again failed to deliver returns (it’s becoming a nasty habit now), ironically in a gameweek that will have seen thousands switch their attention, and their captain’s armbands, to double gameweek prospects in the Spurs and Everton ranks. With such slim pickings from Monday’s five games – the expectation on players form those two teams to produce is now weightier than ever.

Chelsea did at least make a recovery from the winding dished out by Villa at Stamford Bridge at the weekend. The Blues’ 2-1 win at Molineux today was a battle, a scrap that was missed by Didier Drogba and, more significantly, Daniel Sturridge.

We did at least get early warning of the striker’s potential absence and Chelsea have today confirmed that their leading scorer and Fantasy asset missed the midlands trip with a contusion to his hip – brusing in other words. His 16% ownership will be hoping that the timely break for FA Cup duty will be enough to see Sturridge make a return. Andre Villas-Boas has even indicated he could make the cup tie with Portsmouth. Regardless of his expected recovery time, with January wildcards fluttering, we’re already seeing an alarming decline in confidence.

Patience will be paper thin leading up to gameweek 21. With FPL managers handed the opportunity to refresh their squads, the dead wood will be shed. The trick of course, is to correctly identify those surplus to requirements – a Chelsea striker who has delivered well above his modest price tag and who is playing for a Euro 2012 spot, may not fall into this category. In ruthless times however, Sturridge has already become a casualty. Already he’s seen more sales in the gameweek than any other player.

Looking closer at the current FPL transfer trends – the likes of David Silva, Nani, Sergio Aguero, Ryan Taylor and even Jose Enrique are ranked at the very top of the transfers out right now. These players have been giants this season – consistent scorers who have served their Fantasy owners well. Let’s get this clear – these are transfers after the gameweek 20 deadline, they are not victims of the scramble for double gameweek assets but players cast aside, presumably as part of a wildcard shopping sprees inspired by another disappointing return.

The last few days have seen the Premier League elite humbled – clearly this has dented the confidence of some Fantasy managers. The thing about the Premier League’s best, however, is that once toppled, they do tend to get up again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    or

I would - Jones seems very attractive OOP and had some chances earlier but especially given what's happened to United since, am not convinced he'll be in the chances. Once Evans is fit he'll be almost as good and 2 cheaper

Bale, Aguero is more dynamic for big gameweek scores. Silva Adebayor should be more consistently scoring so better for the cup system. Go Bale Aguero for the craic 😉

Like someone has already mentioned, all four should be in your team soon.

Nope. Considering there's no saying players like Mata and Nani will do better than Walters I think you've struck a fine balance. Personally I'd change Aguero for Ade and upgrade elsewhere though..

Silva is consistent, Bale is almost as consistent and explosive, Sess is in great form, Walters is on pens and good at home, Dyer is unpredictable but usually gets zilch - that's 4/5 and fine.

I think it all hinges on Aguero. If he scores points as he did earlier in the season he is well worth having in there and will score to compensate for less money in midfield. The league looks like it has caught up a little in defending against Man C though. Both Sess and Walters are very good value imo

Yes, he's just starting to look like the player he was last season. It's not there yet but there are signs.

With his great fixtures coming up there's no better time for him to step up. This game is all about spotting players about to go on a big scoring run and I have a good feeling for him.

Stockdale will probably lose his place to Schwarzer when he returns

Similar defence+midfield tactic to what I'm planning, though I may end up with Richards as my only heavy-hitter at the back (Depends if I go for Silva over Dempsey or not)

I'm probably ending up with RVP, Aguero and Sturr up top (Getting in Ba when he returns from Africa)

Rangel has 3 or 4 assists this year and is only owned by 1.4% of managers. Also QPR rotates perfectly with Swansea so I think Ferdinand is a good pick.

+1 Rangel is a massively overlooked prospect, was doing very well until the injury.

An analysis of my 2nd hit of the season.

    GW4: Ruddy/Bent ➡ Vorm/Dzeko. -4 points over next 2 GWs. 0.3 gain.

Reason: To get in Vorm (ars)

Why I did not wait with this transfer is beyond me. 1st season type of move, in my 4th season. Just rash knee-jerk and glory hunting. Thinking he might get a clean sheet at the Emirates. I should of course just have played Given instead (eve). It earnt me about 0.1 in value though.

Is 0.1 budget worth 4 points dropped?

Lesson: Its almost always bad point economy to take a hit for a goalkeeper, never mind him playing away. In fact, I would have been just as well off not playing any of my goalies the next two GWs (I wild carded in GW6 btw).

He did. However, I played Given (3) over Vorm (8) the next GW. Taking in Vorm in my GW6 wild card would have been more than enough. Not only that, did Given ➡ Ruddy later to fund RVP.

Wait and see. Valencia did have a positive impact on Rooney though, so combined with Suarez' ban something might happen. But surely, if you are looking at LFC, it is impossible to look past Bellamy.

i dont think kenny sees Bellamy as a out and out striker as he has allready played him on the wing

liverpools fixtures are very good after city game and with the main man back you would think they should start scoring again

Gerrard did provide better service to Carroll in the Newcastle match - balls in the air for him to muscle onto, instead of playing to feet. Carroll hit the bar from a lofted Gerrard cross. But generally speaking it's a bit of a liability to have a striker uncomfortable with receiving passes to feet...

I would wait till Suarez is definitely suspended so that he can get regular game time. Even then Liverpool will likely buy another striker to fill his boots.

I missed the United - Blackburn stunner, how was United's mid and forward line? Did they create chances and waste them? Or were they out of sorts? Is it true Rafael was playing CM?? More generally, what exactly was Fergie doing?

We were shite. Pumped the ball into the box, Hernandez and Berbatov had no chance to win headers against Samba and co. Needed to play it on the ground, but didn't. Dominated the game but had no proper chances bar the goals.

Thanks... so you reckon it was just an awful day at the office? What I want to know is whether current available players and tactics will produce goals or not.

I watched the QPR, Fulham and Wigan matches and you were passing very crisply. You played better in the QPR and Fulham matches with Rooney playing in CM (I think). For me the most recent Wigan match was a bit of a strange one, while you thrashed them the floodgates really opened after the red card, and up to that point it was a little bit disjointed with aimless crosses into the box and Nani/Park drifting around the center a bit. Again, that was missing Rooney and you looked better when he came on. Maybe Blackburn punished you much better than Wigan.

What do you think SAF's reaction will be? Offence or defence?

People still play the highest team value game whereas others have no idea. Good managers wouldn't be trading early unless budget has no leeway & even then it's silly. Every gameweek you see the early transfers & shake your head at them.

What do people think of Man United coverage going into WC season. I have Nani but thinking maybe he is too expensive? I like what I saw of Valencia, and maybe would rather spend on Aguero and/or others. Am I undervaluing Nani? Maybe I have bad associations, he hurt me earlier in the season when I didn't have him and then when I got him last week... well.

Is there anyone who thinks RVP is not an essential pick? He looked poor vs Fulham and the fact that Henry has come in may mean he will be rested in the months ahead. He is also far too expensive and the money left behind allows me to invest in other quality strikers and midfielders. My team after using my wildcard is:
    Vorm, Sorensen
    Jones, BAE, McAuley, Warnock, Taylor
Mata, Silva, Moses (if anything to hopefully profit from his price rise), Bale, Nani
    Yak, Ade, Sturridge

    Opinions?

The fact that you don't have RVP in there, as well as no attacker over 9 (depending on when you got Adebayor) as well as 1 defender over 5.5 and still have Moses in there baffles me..

But the midfielders and strikers will all definitely get goals and assists, with the exception of Moses, which is the one spot where I'm uncertain of. I could put in Ferguson and keep 1.5m in the bank. I just think Arsenal's fixtures over the next two weeks, the fact that they always seem to slip up in the second half of the season, and RVP's need for a rest mean he isn't needed.

Trouble is that i bought him at 12.0m, If i sold him, might never be able to afford him in again.
Personally, I can't see getting rid of him unless injured. Over the last 6GW's (his apparent cold srreak)he is averaging over 5 PT/game. Over the season he has accounted for almost 1/2 of Arsenal goals.

I've thought about this. Basically IMO the biggest reason RVP is fantasy gold is not that he's awesome (though he is) but he's Arsenal's one-man strikeforce. If that ever changes he may lose must-have status, the same way Rooney, Torres and Tevez lost it. I don't think Henry is a threat because he's much older now and can't be perceived as a replacement for RVP - more a second striker. I would be concerned that more goals are coming from deep now (Benayoun, Koscielny) and perhaps on a wider note by Arsenal scoring less but I think both are caused by the Walcott-Gervinho supply being disrupted by Walcott's injury. For me no 11+ striker is better right now... wouldn't touch.

Yeah, keepers are difficult to choose. I've tried dropping Vorm but with only 8.7m in the bank its hard to get anyone in who you can have confidence with. May end up compromising elsewhere to give me some options

Why have just 1 credible keeper? Vorm/Sorenson are two great budget home CS shouts.

Would get Shotton instead of Wilko, but like Skrtel, good goal threat of late.

Wouldn't count on Valencia being prime for the rest of the season, United's squad is too big, once Young/Nani/Valencia are all available his place may be under threat.

      Frontline looks good.

I know why you have not played it. The answer is in that question. Why play it if you do not what you want to transfer?

Best is surely a bargain at 4.6m with Ba off to ACON

Definite bargain if he plays as their main striker, which he should... had him in the season earlier and was unconvinced but it was because Ba was there. Incredible bargain punt with QPR ful bla AVL tot WOL to come.

He hasn't dropped tonight, he may tomorrow night. I understand he's likely to play next GW because he should be available for the FA Cup match before. Safe option is to stick with him, if your squad is good enough to gamble you can try Odemwingie/Yak.

Sturridge is flagged as doubtful and hence needs more transfers out to drop - something like 150% although don't quote me on that!

Odemwingie has: NOR sto ful SWA wol SUN. While none are big teams, sto, ful are difficult away fixtures, SWA are improving their defence away from home and SUN are going through the O'Neill revival so that leaves considerably fewer goalfest chances. You could gamble on him now for the tasty looking NOR game and fix in the WC if he doesn't deliver later.

Hmm..... your team looks decent enough, only players you might have to take out soon might be Osman and perhaps BAE after DGW.

But personally I don't think Odemwingie is enough of an improvement on Sturridge to take the gamble..... I do think he can make bigger scores but might have a lot of 2s as well. Up to you - safe v dangerous.
