There was plenty logic behind the move to draft in Yakubu this week. Having been rested for the FA Cup defeat at Newcastle, the Nigerian looked primed to play a significant part in the gameweek as Blackburn went looking for a win that would take them off the bottom of the table.

The first week of the winter wildcard bore fruit to that idea. Yakubu rose by 0.3, up to 6.1 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) pricings, as over 220,000 Fantasy managers clambered to get a piece of the action ahead of the Fulham showdown.

It seemed a sensible acquisition. Yakubu had been instrumental in Rovers’ 3 wins so far this season, grabbing braces against Arsenal and Man United, in addition to a 4 goal haul at home to Swansea. If Steve Kean’s side were to grab all three points, you’d have thought he would surely play a part.

A red card within twenty-two minutes quickly put an end to those best-laid plans. Dismissed for a reckless, studs-up challenge on Danny Murphy, Yakubu ended the gameweek on the princely score of -2 and is now set for an enforced leave of absence. He begins a three-match that puts him out of the picture until the gameweek 25 home clash with QPR and leaves Kean facing (eve, NEW, ars) with a strike force that have scored 6 goals between them all season.

With Demba Ba off on international duties and Emmanuel Adebayor unavailable for Spurs’ game against his parent club Man City, Fantasy forward lines look set for a significant shake-up over the upcoming couple of gameweeks. The irony here is that Yakubu was the main beneficiary from Ba’s trip to the African Cup of Nations- with Nigeria having failed to qualify, he offered an in-form cut-price option as a replacement for the Newcastle man.

This afternoon’s moment of folly, though, means the chance afforded was no more than a fleeting one, as schedules are once again scanned and budgets readjusted to accommodate further alternatives.

What ye think of this wildcard team?

    Vorm Kenny
    Brown Senderos Simpson Evans Shawcross
    Bale Silva Mata Valencia Moses
    RvP Aguero Bendtner

Was thinking either Bendtner and Moses or McClean and Rodallega to rotate. McClean and Rod is a bit cheaper though and would give me room to make a .5 change somewhere in the team!

So you reckon McClean and Rod would be better so? Defo getting a Sun player in because they have two delicious fixtures coming up! Might do McClean and Rodallega alright just to be a bit different!

Guess there are many ways and options, just depends how u want to play it.. U cld get an ultra cheap fwd and use the spare cash to get say Sess, for the good fixtures and play just two up fwd on those GWs... All im sayn is stay away from the Bendybus imo..

Accoring to live stream he was fairly involved and missed an open goal so he seems to be getting forward a good bit. Played the full 90 also. Cant see who would replace him at the moment? Should be a starter for a while...

yeah he should of scored but i think, in is defence, that he thought bosingwa was going to get a touch on the cross, so it caught him by surprise. shows tho that he's getting into positions to score. i think he's a serious player and a serious bargain.

Like it, though maybe not quite enough enough invested in defence. I have to say the more I look at things the more I think there are much cheaper value for money strikers than Sturridge. Getting in Fletcher or Morison would allow you to upgrade Caulker to someone like Kos/Verm/BAE

Im no expert here, but I just saw the replay to Welbeck’s goal, the final “pass” came off as a flick from the left boot of the Bolton man trying to disposess Rooney.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEWFm0y6zPQ

In this link at 0:38 secs. After Rooney drives it square, and Welbeck gets his "touch" the ball slows down a little and has deviated a bit, not in a circular manner as an undelflected cross from the inside of the boot would go, but more like someone got a slight nick on it.

    Again. Just my views.

Yep that's the plan, very nasty fixtures for a while and no one is jumping out at me, I'd consider Valencia, he's play well but can't see Utd scoring much against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs, even Stoke at home will be tough...

    ok folks

what do I need to do for next week (and who to captain)

    Vorm/Friedel

    BAE, Brown, McAuley, Raylor, Jones

    Silva, Nani, Bale, Donovan, Tiote

    RvP, Odemwingie, Sturridge

was hoping not to wc, thinking of maybe just Odemwingie out for any striker up to 8.1 (though Fletcher seems like the best bet) 1FT only.

Donovan could yet perform, he got an assist today, I agree that Tiote needs to go, but he;s only ever been 3rd sub for me, not worth spending points to take out IMO, BAE I think I might keep, the real question is, who to get for Thingy?

              but I won't

he's just as a big of a punt (yes I said PUNT) as Thingy, only playing against a better defence.

I'd rather punt on Keane or Fletcher than him tbh

Ill see how he gets on against New, its nice to have some really good cheap options now like Morison and Fletcher aswell

I currently have Fletcher in my WC draft but if Helguson and QPR do well then i might get him in, 0.7 mill cheaper and the best fixtures out of all the cheap strikers

    1st WC Draft:

Great day for the English, Doos. All the top scoring mids are from this sceptred isle.

James said he meant to bring in Bongles (hmm....) not Adebayor. He's taken an 8-point hit to make up for it, so I've let him stay in the league. Hope that's OK with you.

For his price he doesn't return enough points in my humble opinion Doos. It's not that he doesn't get points, just not enough to justify what he costs. From a non-fantasy perspective, I don't think he's playing anything like he can, doesn't look confident, missing pens, touch isn't good. As a ManU supporter I hope that will change rather quickly! Hope you don't lose your assists. Or maybe I do! 😉

Fair enough. For me, unless injury intervenes - or a tea-cup! - he will probably see out the season. I expect MUN to win, and when they do, as today, for good or ill he will be at the heart of it.

I expect Arsenal to come second, and Spurs third. I may indeed look completely foolish on Monday Evening, but it won't be the first - or the last - time!
