No goals from open play in seven league starts. That’s a statistic which, a couple of months ago, would seem improbable of a player of the stature of Robin Van Persie. It looked like he’d run and run until the end of the season; that Arsenal’s skipper had successfully broken Fantasy football and made a slot in our squads his own, with the captain’s armband soldered to his bicep.

Today’s blank in the stifling 0-0 with Chelsea at the Emirates was the latest setback for those clinging to Van Persie, in the hope that he’ll recapture the stunning form which saw him reach essential status. Certainly there’s been no let up in goal threat from Arsenal’s talisman. Today, Van Persie fired in seven efforts on goal – more than any other player in the Gameweek thus far – it was his most threatening display since Gameweek 18. Reassurance in numbers form – but is it enough?

Such statistics would indicate that his army of Fantasy owners, and those who skippered him yet again, were unfortunate to pocket just a single point after the Dutchman earned his seventh booking of the season. As Arsene Wenger commented in his post-match conference, Van Persie gave everything but, like his owners, he just got nothing back.

The question is, where do we go from here? A total of 74,000 net transfers out last week, already Van Persie is being shipped by thousands. Clearly there’s a tide turning against him as patience wears thin. Although fixtures against Stoke, Norwich and West Brom would suggest that Arsenal and Van Persie still have goals left to score.

Today’s injury to Theo Walcott won’t help acquire them – Van Persie will now have to do without his supply from the right flank for the remaining matches. However, that also deprives Arsene Wenger of the option of shifting Walcott to a central role and carrying out the unthinkable act of resting his skipper – even with 50 games in the tank. While Arsenal still have something to play for, Van Persie will surely start and, with those opponents, logic and statistics suggest that the goal drought surely cannot continue.

It’s getting tougher to hang on to such arguments, though. With Papiss Cisse maintaining a frightening and improbable scoring rate, it’s almost as if the power has shifted. Like the goal mojo took a train to Tyneside, leaving the weary Dutchman searching for the knack, whilst Cisse went about feasting. Double Gameweek offerings will be the next to tempt us to pull the chord on the Van Persie ejector seat: the nagging doubts are building.

Today’s harsh lesson will surely see the armband kept from Van Persie when he rolls up at Stoke. A notorious setting, Wenger won’t relish taking his men to the Britannia and the majority will expect Van Persie’s dry spell to be extended. Those who press the button prior to Gameweek will cling to the fact that the Gunners rarely enjoy their encounters with the muscular Potters who, at their best, can be formidable in front of their bellowing fans. It all points to another blank for the goalscorer supreme. I can almost see Tony Pulis, furiously waving a green flag for those now pondering disposing of Van Persie’s talents.

Personally, I’m not sure I want to take Tony’s advice: I never trust a man in a baseball cap. I’m not turning my back on Robin, not yet. Maybe I’ll sleep on it. Maybe, once Wayne Rooney has done his thing against Everton, once City have torn up Wolves – maybe then they’ll be enough to convince me that it’s time to give it up.

Right now it feels wrong. The good times are still too fresh in the mind. Even if part of me is watching my season whimper out along with Van Persie’s, he’s saved me so often, it’s almost as if I feel I owe to him to remain faithful.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Repost for the new post

JKs DGW Analysis – Defenders – Part 1

    Tottenham

Moat likely Target – Benoit AssouEkotto

The man otherwise known as BAE, has form in DGWs as those of us that owned him for his last one can testify. Priced at 5 million at the of the game, the current 3rd placed defender’s price has sky-rocketed up to 6.3, making him a little more restrictive on budgets, so props to those who kept him. But, if money if no issue and you want a Spur’s defender, BAE is your man, his attacking returns are the reason his price has shot up.

    Alternative Option – Younes Kaboul

Priced at a more reasonable 5.5, the Spurs’ centre-halve’s absence could be seen as major reason behind his sides recent defensive woes. Although he has delivered just 1 goal this season, he remains a threat from set-pieces and offers a nailed on route into Spurs’ defence. That being said, there are still doubts over whether he will make it back for DGW, so potential investors may wish to hold off until Friday’s press conference. But if he’s fit, Kaboul offers a great chance of DGW returns

Doosra Differential Punt – Kyle Walker

It was felt at the start of the season that Walker was the bet for Spurs’ defenders. However, after a fine start his returns have tailed off, and he no longer looks the safe bet he once was. But for those seeking something different Walker may be the guy.

    Everton

Most Likely Target – Phil Jagielka

This spot would have gone to Leighton Baines, but with him ruled out, the Everton skipper moves into the top spot. With 2 goals to his name already the Everton skipper appears nailed on for both games and and 5.3 million could offer excellent value for money

    Alternative option – Tony Hibbert

With Baines out, Phil Neville’s will play left-back meaning Choppa Tony is almost certain to play right-back in both games. At 4.6 he is dirt cheap, but for a man who offers so little in the way of attacking returns, what do you expect. Hibbert is the man to pick if you are shopping in the Everton defence on a budget

Doosra Differential Punt – Sylvain Distin

Almost certain to start alongside Jagielka at centre-back, the Frenchman appears to have the edge on John Heitinga for a starting berth. Not as prolific as in previous seasons, Distin still offers a decent attacking threat and could be a great punt if you need to make up some ground

    Newcastle

Most likely target – Danny Simpson

An ever present for Newcastle this season the 4.7 million priced full-back could see an increase in investment in the run up to DGW, especially after delivering a 14th clean sheet of the season. Simpson has provided 2 assists this season and his marauding runs down the right always leave the promise of more. But he was subbed early in GW35, with a potential injury, so would be buyers should exercise caution.

    Alternative option – Mike Williamson

Coming in at just 4.2, Williamson is nailed on alongside Coloccini at the heart of the Newcastle defence. Williamson has returned 1 assist so far and will continue to be a threat at corners. If Simpson is too much of a stretch, or you own him but fancy doubling up, he could be the man for you.

Doosra Differential Option – Davide Santon

A run of games from the bench seemed to have signaled the end of Santon’s run this season. However, his patience, and that of his owners (points to self) has been rewarded as Santon has returned to the first team and delivered his owners 3 straight clean sheets and a bonus point. At 4.2 with 0.6% ownership Santon could be that cheeky punt that makes all the difference
