[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

Sunday morning’s deadline creeps ever closer and it’s time for a final roll of the dice. There’s only one chance left to overhaul that mini league lead and if you’re anything like me, then nothing short of a miracle will suffice. What’s needed is something truly special – a player that no one else has returning a monster score as captain, while the big names have an off day…

Very unlikely, of course, but while that chance remains there is always hope. With this in mind, we’ve picked out a trio of differential captain options, in the hope that one can help you pull off an epic last day turnaround to rival that glorious sunny day in 1994.

Leighton Baines

David Moyes is notoriously difficult to predict at times, but reports suggest that the ex-Wigan man has been back in training this week and looks set to return against Newcastle, providing an interesting option as a last day punt.

Everton’s impressive form over the last eight games has seen then turn in five clean sheets and score four or more goals on three separate occasions. What’s more, they’ve shipped just one goal at home in the last seven, a run that has seen City, Chelsea and Spurs come away from Goodison without a goal between them. Form is definitely on their side, then, and although Newcastle will be desperately pushing for the win to give them a chance of Champions League qualification, Everton will be confident they can keep the likes of Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa at bay.

Defensive returns alone aren’t enough to pull in a monster score but, as arguably the most attacking defender in the league, Baines offers huge potential at both ends of the pitch and could easily top double figures. It’s a big risk of course; to maximise returns as captain, you’re relying on him playing 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet, and will probably need a penalty or a couple of assists to boot. If there is anyone capable of pulling it off at Goodison though, Baines is your man and with just 5.5% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he would be a huge differential captain.

Carlos Tevez

If there is one player in the league capable of racking up a cricket score this week, it’s Carlos Tevez. With just 2.3% ownership compared to Sergio Aguero’s 29%, the Argentine maverick has the power to completely overhaul a mini league gap in one fell swoop.

After a huge 19 point haul against Norwich, he has not done much of late but we all know what Tevez capable of. Hugely influential in City’s late surge towards the title, he will be looking to further redeem himself in the only way he knows how; scoring a shed load of goals. With the extra incentive of beating his old club to the Premier League title, Tevez will be bouncing off the walls; chances are he’s either going to get sent off or score a hat-trick.

Priced at 11.6, squeezing Tevez into your team won’t be easy, and you may need to consider *gulp* dropping the imperial Robin Van Persie. We’re talking desperate measures here, though, and if you’re going to pull off a miracle, then you’ll probably need Van Persie to have a shocker at the Hawthorns anyway.

Andy Carroll

Second only to team mate Luis Suarez in terms of Fantasy frustrations this term, and with just one double figure return all season, Andy Carroll is perhaps the biggest gamble of our trio. With so much potential on offer, and so many chances handed to him on a plate, the former Newcastle man has hit the post or been edged off the ball at the vital moment time and again. It might be a slight cliché to say that Carroll is due a bumper haul, however, but he really is. One look at our members stats show he has been a real handful over the past four Gameweeks, creating umpteen goalscoring opportunities and firing several efforts at goal. Despite the fact that Carroll has returned just a single assist since Gameweek 34 onwards, only Van Persie has offered more in terms of key passes and goal attempts.

Don’t be fooled into thinking Liverpool have nothing left to play for. If they better Everton’s result against Newcastle, they will leapfrog their city rivals into seventh – this may seem like small consolation but means a huge amount to anyone associated with either Merseyside club. Coming off the back of a 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea and up against a Swansea side that are have shipped four goals in their last home game, Liverpool will be looking for a big win here and, with a bit of luck, Carroll could be just the man to take advantage.

Possibly right, but just looking to preserve lead in my ML with the most money on the line. In that league I have a 35 point lead or so, and the rival has Silva in midfield.

The performance of your goalies and your choice between them is independent of which forwards and mids you have. They are deucedly unaware, and your choice of Krul would not make Jelavic more or less likely to score. Likewise with Mignolet and Valencia.

Choose your best keeper (I lean towards Krul although Miggy may have extra points for saves)
      Choose your best mids
      Choose your best forwards

      Independent decisions.

Need help to catch up 28 points on my ML.

    Bogdan
    Huth caulker mcauly (evans kelly)
    bale pienaar barfa siggy (demps)
    rvp rooney adebayor

My team is looking really week so not sure if its worth taking hits

    A: Adebayor + demps >>> Ramires + Torres (4 point hit)
    B: Rooney + demps >>> Torres + Nasri (4 point hit)
C: Rooney >>> Augero or Torres
D: Rooney + Evans >>> Augero + any defender (4 point hit)….although i dont see the logic of taking a hit to bring in a defender.

    Thoughts?

If really chasing, then Rooney/Dempsey >> Torres/Nasri may be best hope at a differential haul. Torres could totally go off on Blackburn, to a greater degree even than Rooney does. Nasri probably not owned by your foe, but could put up double digits just as easily as Silva.

Well, I've got Pienaar and I didn't think twice about playing him. Great form at home, Pardew said Newcastle will have a go and that should make it an open game. Win or lose Newcastle can't finish any lower than 5th. so there's no reason for them not to have a go and try to win the game.

How close are you in your league? I think you probably make up more points by upgrading from a McClean (1-2 points) to a Silva as a single move, than you do by upgrading from the forwards you have, given that you have to take a four pointer to do it.

I may be wrong though. I'm considering similar (a bit)

Hmm, you've got a point. Besides, Cisse can easily score against the Toffees and I already have Tevez as it is.

Just one question - why not bench Valencia and start McClean? McClean is usually good at home while Valencia has gone completely off the boil.

Hard to choose between the two, and if you read much deadzone traffic, you'll know I'm a Valencia hater, but I think Valencia plays, and I don't think United get shut out. McClean has also gone off the boil, I think. If you look at his record, apart from points off the bottom dwellers of Bolton and QPR, he hasn't really done squat since about GW 25.

Depends on who your rival has. You won't make up 28 points by fielding the same front three... To make up that deficit, you have to differentiate and pray.

So that's it then. The deed is done for another season.

Rooney and Demsey out. Aguero the Mighty Kun and Holy Moly in.

Best of luck everyone in your respective mini-leagues 😛

Demps to Yaya, for a 4 point hit - not worth it right?

Front 7 are currently VDV Siggy Moses Petrov Aguero Rooney RVP.

    Cheers

    I need some advice.

Rival has a one point lead, differentials is as follows:

Him: Krul - Enriq - McAul - Nani - Ade

    VS

Me: Vorm - Terry - Caulk - Valencia - Rvp

Who has the best chance of winning our mini league???

because why? I can't see Chelsea risking an injury to Drogba ahead of CL final. Do you think they will go with Sturridge as lone forward?

they can play sturridge lukaku and kalou. but this seems like the perfect game to allow torres to gain some form ahead of the CL final where he may be required as a sub

It has taken me a while to perform the exhausting calculations needed for getting such a accurate result, I think Torres has a 0% starting chance because I've just taken a 4 point hit for him and I already have no bench, just my two cence worth! 😀

I realised that just after I posted it but I'll let myself off this time because I think it's the first time I typed ''Cents'' (I hope that's correct :s)

12pts behind and my leader, he has just got Aguero whom l think he will captain. He also has RVP, do l go with him or captain someone he doesn't have like VDV?

          I'd go:

          Bale/Pienaar/Moses/Siggy
          RVP/Aguero/Jelavic

          and leave Petrov on bench.
Think Jelavic easily scores more than Petrov.
Think Siggy at home against Liverpool more likely than Petrov at Stoke
Think Pienaar at home also more likely than Petrov.... Everton has been in good form lately and Pienaar has been in midst of most of it, even against tough opposition (see 4-4 at OT)

Hello all, I posted this joke last night GMT and got a few laughs, so I thought it should be shared this morning; Australian joke of the year 2012,

Charlie walks into his bedroom with a sheep under his arm and says,

" Darling this is the pig I have sex with whenever you have a headache."

His wife is lying in bed and replies " I think you'll find that's a sheep, you idiot."

Charlie says, " I think you'll find that I wasn't talking to you."

    A) Worth a -4pt to bring Nasri in for Dempsey then drop Valencia to bench?
