Tony Pulis added another wide man to Stoke City’s ranks earlier this week after snapping up Michael Kightly for a fee believed to be in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old arrives at the Britannia on a long-term deal from neighbours Wolves and is expected to push for a starting role in the upcoming campaign:

Having tasted relegation with the Molineux outfit only a matter of months ago, Kightly was clearly a relieved man to be given another bite of the Premier League cherry. Speaking to the Potters’ official website upon completion of the move, he enthused:

It’s a great club; an established Premier League club, so I am delighted to be here. Any footballer wants to play at the highest level and I am grateful to Stoke for giving me the chance to stay in the Premier League. The Club sold itself to me. What they have achieved over the past few years has been remarkable. Then there’s the excellent facilities and, of course, the supporters. So, it’s definitely a Club that is moving in the right direction.

The Statistics

Kightly began his career in the Tottenham youth ranks but returned to hometown club Basildon United after being released by the London outfit. Having scored 11 goals in 18 matches, he caught the eye of Southend United and was handed a two-year deal in 2003 but struggled to make any sort of impact. Over 13 games, the winger failed to find the net and was farmed out to Farnborough Town but his temporary spell was largely underwhelming; no goals in 11 games saw him return to Southend, where he was released by then-boss Steve Tilson.

Greys Athletic then came to the rescue ahead of the 2005-06 campaign. Over his season-and-a-half at the club, Kightly finally began to produce the goods; 52 games harvested 24 goals and earned a loan move to Wolves where, after notching twice in his first five matches, he signed a permanent deal. The winger’s first three seasons at Molineux hinted at huge potential; he returned 20 goals and 30 assists over 80 appearances, with the 2008/09 campaign alone producing eight goals and 19 assists, but since then, his game time has been dramatically reduced by injury. Ankle and metatarsal problems have limited Kightly to just 31 games for Wolves in the past three seasons, where he returned four goals and a couple of assists. A four-month loan spell at Watford midway through last term saw him find the net three times in 12 games before returning to the midlands club in January 2012.

The Prospects

With a mere 36 goals to their name last season, the Potters were the lowest scorers in the Premier League and Pulis revealed Kightly’s acquisition was a major factor in addressing this statistic. Attacking threat from the flanks was somewhat diminished in 2011/12 – Matthew Etherington scored three times while Jermaine Pennant failed to find the net at all, a factor their manager acknowledged:

There is nothing better than to have strong competition in all areas of the squad and Michael’s arrival will give us that in the wide positions. I’ve long been an admirer of Michael, not only in terms of him being a provider, but also the fact that he gets his share of goals. Our two wingers, Matthew Etherington and Jermaine Pennant, have been brilliant over the past few years, but they went off the boil in terms of goalscoring last season, so we wanted to address that. Competition for places will bring the best out of them again and that is what Michael’s presence will give us in that area.

With Etherington likely to continue in the left flank role, Pennant looks the most at risk here. The latter made just 18 starts for Stoke last season, with Jon Walters and Ryan Shotton both handed game time on the right of midfield. Walters now seems likely to continue solely up front rather than drop back onto the wing on occasion, boosting his potential as an out-of-position prospect in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

While he has yet to be added to the Sky Sports game Kightly has been handed a 5.5 price tag by FPL – the same as Pennant and 1.0 less than Etherington – and, if he can nail down a regular role, his delivery from out wide will be a valuable asset to the likes of Peter Crouch up top and could, potentially, propel the former Wolves man as a viable mid-price asset for our consideration.

The Potters’ opening schedule is likely to see Fantasy managers approach the Stoke squad with plenty trepidation, however. With showdowns against Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Liverpool and United in the first eight Gameweeks, Pulis’ men could hardly ask for a trickier start and, while some may feel trips to Reading and Wigan could prove prosperous, it’s worth remembering the Stoke picked up a dire three points in their last nine away matches of 2011/12. Fantasy investment can be expected around the Gameweek 9 mark, however, when the fixture list smiles significantly kinder on Kightly and co.

Ok as previous draft got abused, have tinkered a little...

    Federici (Begovic)

    Hangeland Collocini Fabio McCartney Reading4.0?

    Valencia Siggy Lampard Nolan Pienaar

    Aguero Torres(+2.0) Pog

Will play double Reading defence as a punt GW1, with Pog starting too so benching probably Collocini and Nolan/Pienaar.

GW2 Torres>Rooney, unless El Nino has a flyer and looks like he may just do it this season then will sit on transfer for GW3 and maybe do Pog>Rooney and sacrifice Lampard for a 4.5m. No worries on price changes with 2.5m in the pot.

    U likey?

New member, nearly cracked the top 10k last year so looking at doing it this time around (with some FFScoutage helping). Thoughts on these little blighters:

Green / Davis (Rotators, save points, not many cleanies)

    Ivanovic (to STaylor GW3) / Vermaelen / Hangeland / Cuellar / Chicotime!

    FatFrank (to Bale GW2) / Cazorla / YaYa / Pienaar / Michu

Torres / Petric / Vaz Te (easy fixtures for the cheapies) with Torres losing his place fairly swiftly

£4m in the bank, and an extra £1.5m when Ivan to STaylor GW3 - just in case the front three arent scoring, or god forbid, the defence needs reinforcements

Best of luck getting top 10k with that team this year. Its certainly different.

a word of warning about Green...he is not a good shot stopper. So his save points will not be as high as someone like say Jussi.

Davis and Schwarzer is a better rotation, albeit a more expensive one.

Like the defence..although Chico is a risk, but a cheap one.

Cazorla is likely to be eased in...Wenger tends to do that with his newbies, also he plays in Puerto Rico with the Spain squad a few days before. Michu is a risk, just so you know...could be good...but more than likely won't

No need to hoard 4m ...use it to improve that attack. Yes Torres - Rooney or another, but Petric has not played any Prem games so is a risk (why not consider proven Graham or Holt)
And as for Vaz Te...lots of competition and he was pants last time he played in the Prem. He looks to me like a championship player who will not step up. Why not upgrade to Bent? Jelavic? Any one who is proven?

depends on how much chance he's had to train with the team. Gervinho had a good pre season as I recall and Arteta has the experience. Mertesacker started straight away because of injuries but didn't and arguably still doesn't look up to Prem pace.

Just checked, yes Gervinho joined mid July and scored a brace in his pre season debut. If Carzola starts his first prem match after just joining, then jetting off to Puerto Rico I'd be surprised.

Yeah this is true, although he will still have around 2 weeks with the team.
My main point was that Rosicky is injured, and Ramsey is poor, and has been in the Olympics, meaning there are no others that should start above him.
And it's not even arguable by the way 🙂 Mertesacker definitely isn't up to it I reckon.

How is it i''ve hardly seen Darren Bent in any of the hundreds of RMTs here. £8.5 is reasonable for one of the most consistent PL goalscorers, he now has a better and more attack minded manager. And best of all, he has arguably the easiest opening 6 fixtures of any serious striker in the game.

He is my fourth-choice striker. The problem is he is returning from injury so he may take a while to find his feet. Also, I think I can get some Villa attacking points from their midfield whilst the same cannot be said for other teams and so I have got their forwards instead of Bent.

I have him in my Metro team and will get him in for Torres should Rooney develop an injury. Agree, he is proven and prolific. Last season was a blip, blighted by injury playing for a manager who didn't agree with the word attack.

Bent and Suarez could be bargains this year.

Hazard can become mata or lamps before the deadline. Still not totally decided. I personally think fabio could do well this season. May consider Taylor instead of hangaland to rotate with cuellar

Exactly. the line up for Everton in their last friendly is pretty much their first team - Jags in my eyes. Rodwell will get game time when people like Naismith are protected.

This is a long shot but Coleman was originally a right back and might start getting game time there. Can't see him playing much otherwise.

I'm finding myself thinking of Szczesny as good value at 5.5? Cheapest top four keeper, nailed, 13 cleanies last season? Then picking a 4.0 and playing every week?

Then would have Szczesny, Hangeland, Collocini, plus one rotater...

Or alternatively any thoughts on doubling Hangeland with Schwarzer, with a 4.0m filler. Add his score to Stockdale's and you get 146 points last season. Not bad?!

A lot of talk seems to be around teams not having captaincy options assuming basically only Rooney and Aguero are decent captaincy options.

Assuming the fixtures are right (and with no knowledge of form) I'd captain Mata, Suarez, VdV, Bale, Nani and Dempsey.

Thats without RVP staying/going, Arsenal probably having another good option emerge, Hazard hitting the ground running.

Lots of people acting like Roon and Ag are the ONLY people to captain.

All the oens you mentioned are good options.... and I'd chuck Tevez in there too if he starts to look naile don.

I have fond memories of captaining Tevez a couple years ago...

Just a quick one on Darren Bent.

Last season was a right off. Injuries plus defensive manager.

Last season was also the start of the new bonus system which was heavily weighted towards goalscorers

Bent isjust the sort of player to do naff all but take his chances - coudl do very well under new attackign manager and new bonus system.

    Food for thought?

Yeah I think he'll definitely be better this season and is worth considering. But I'm not sure he's worth 2.0m over the likes of Graham, Petric and Djibril Cisse..

        Really?

Think he's been pretty consistent and scored goals at every club he's been to.

Completely disagree. He isn't a form player, he is a goal scorer.

I agree, as per last discussion on this.

If I had cannonball sized swinging Jacobs I'd pick a frontline of Jelavic - Bent - suarez. That lot could score 50 goals between them over the season and only cost 26.5m the lot.

3 from Tevez, Suarez, Jelavic, Ba, Cisse, Bent could haul it in. And you can easily switch between them and have 3 big mids who can swap around too.

Ridiculously tempted by a Suarez-Tevez-Bent front line now.

Although Rooney, Aguero and Graham would be 29.5, it would give you rotation between the (probable) two highest points scorers as captain. This would give 50 goals at a minimum, probably around 60.

Have had Bent in since the first build of my team and has lasted the test of time. Jelly being the only player to give me pause as an alternative, but taking Pienaar instead.

He is typically a 20-goal man and if Lambert can get 15 goals out Grant Holt, then you can be sure if Bent stays healthy he will be in for a decent haul.

Plus Bent will have a lot more game time than Holt did. Can see him getting 20+ goals.

Definitely worth it, potential for a cheap mid option if Ireland hits form but nothing as reliable as Pienaar from Everton.

Still think one big striker is essential for a fallback weekly captain option, but not two with so many other options.

Also when it comes down to it what you are looking for in a striker is goals, assists from a mid and clean sheets from a defender....that's bread and butter stuff and Bent more than fulfils his requirement as a striker.

Is Mackie seriously a forward? If he was a m/f I'd seriously consider him, reckon he's this seasons McClean, or season before Coleman type prospect. But why a forward (reverse OOP), shame......

Siggy was forced to play deap yesterday against Valencia after VDV came on. With limited options now Parker is out I think we might see him in the double pivot more than we would like to start the year.

I am going safe and taking Bale over Siggy or VDV, depsite the fast the both are more explosive.
