Our refresh of the Watchlist rankings, giving our view on player picks for the next month or so, is now available in your right sidebar. This week’s update finds Chelsea returning to the radar, while the form of West Brom and Everton also see climbs for their key assets across the positions…

Goalkeepers

Michel Vorm holds his top rank, amidst upheaval in the Swansea back four following the injury to Neil Taylor and a three-match ban for Chico, which will see him miss two league encounters. The Swans keeper is being pushed all the way by West Brom’s Ben Foster, however, after a second clean sheet against Everton boosted his stock; with fixtures falling in his favour, he presents a very strong keeper option if you’re not already looking to Steve Clarke’s defenders.

Jussi Jaaskalainen is again the budget option to consider below these two, having sealed a second home clean sheet in the win over Fulham. Wojciech Szczeseny is a consideration after returning from injury – his fixtures are stiff but, with a newly disciplined back four in front of him, he looks a good option – his stock slightly tempered by concern that he may not reclaim his start from Vito Mannone.

Defenders

Leighton Baines climbs to the top of our rankings here, despite the 2-0 setback at the Hawthorns. The fixture list suggests that Everton will be in profit at both ends of the field in the next two months and Baines looks by far the strongest option if you’re spending big in defence. His ascent is helped by City and United’s current inability to claim clean sheets, reducing the value of other options in Baines’ bracket.

Swansea’s Angel Rangel is toppled, then, but holds in second spot with the continued promise of returns from a kind fixture list. Team-mate Ben Davies was a consideration to oust Rangel as the Swansea option here, given that the young left-back looks nailed-on, at least in the short-term. Davies is available for a budget price and will surely start at Villa next time out, although Michael Laudrup has stated he is searching for backup which could threaten Davies’ start. We’re reserving judgement on this, keeping the more expensive Rangel in our Watchlist rankings.

West Brom’s Gareth McAuley is our pick of the West Brom defenders – while we’ve previously favoured team-mate Liam Ridgewell for his greater assist potential, his left-back position is now under threat from new signing Goran Popov – that’s a concern. McAuley, in contrast, looks nailed on and has shown greater goal threat in the opening three matches.

Thomas Vermaelen is another heavy-hitting defender who has enjoyed a stock increase. Three clean sheets have provided handsome returns, although with Carl Jenkinson available as an option, interest in the Gunners skipper has been tempered. With Bacary Sagna nearing a return, however, Jenkinson’s start will soon come under pressure. That will either have us turn to Kieran Gibbs or, if you have the funds, the goalscoring threat of Vermaelen.

Guy Demel is the top budget option in the rankings; we’re still waiting confirmation on the extent of the injury sustained against Fulham but, for now, we’re monitoring this as a minor knock. If fit, Demel looks real value having seemingly cemented the right-back role for the Hammers.

Midfielders

Eden Hazard returns to action and, not surprisingly, claims top spot in our midfielder rankings. With Swansea’ goal threat Michu remaining in second spot, these two will surely find place in many a Fantasy squad in the next few weeks if they’ve yet to secure their spots. It’s very hard to look beyond either, given their respective form and fixtures.

Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla has emerged as a real rival for our affections, however and, despite a testing short-term fixture list, there’s clearly merits in recruiting early – prior to improved fixtures and, potentially, returns.

Everton’s kind forthcoming run is reflected in Steven Pienaar’s climb up our rankings. For my money, if you don’t have Baines or Nikica Jelavic in your squad, then Pienaar becomes essential cover of Everton’s strong form. We’ve opted for the South African over Maroane Fellaini with the suspicion that the Belgian will, eventually, be moved back to a midfield role following the recent impact of striker ‪Kevin Miralles. There’s a slight injury doubt over Pienaar, so investment should, perhaps, be delayed until we know more on his calf problem next week.

James Morrison is another player to benefit from form and fixtures and he’s perhaps an unlikely name in our rankings, particularly when you consider that we have him above the likes of Kevin Nolan, Gareth Bale and Hatem Ben Arfa. While Morrison’s returns have been under the radar so far, we see him as the prime asset to consider over the Baggies’ kind run of opponents in the coming weeks. With just over 1% ownership, he could be a very efficient differential for those worried about forming a template squad.

Forwards

It’s going to take injury or a minor miracle for our top two to be displaced for the forseeable future. While Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez have swapped places in our table, they are surely set to remain one and two for a good few Gameweeks, given their current form.

Everton’s Nikaca Jelavic is now our third striker option of choice. Again, if you can’t cover Everton with Baines or Pienaar, Jelavic looks to be the route to explore. We’re targeting the next ten games as a very positive spell for the Croatian goalscorer.

Southamptons’ Rickie Lambert is now a clear front runner in the budget bracket, although both Swansea’s Danny Graham and Reading’s Pavel Pogrebnyak offer strong alternative options here.

Dimitar Berbatov makes an appearance in our thinking and certainly has the fixtures to flourish. The Bulgarian’s bandwagon could well pick up speed if he can prove his worth against West Brom in Gameweek 4. His engine is certainly running, with Fantasy managers deliberating whether to climb on board early.

Berbatov, along with West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie, are our differentials on show here. The Nigerian has yet to cement his role in Steve Clarke’s 4-3-3 formation but we’ve still opted for him over Shane Long – the Baggies frontline has plenty of competition and is far from secure, another factor which promotes Morrison in our thinking.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Long seems to be prone to substitution, I think there are better options @ that price.

Pienaar AND Baines is overkill IMO I would downgrade Pienaar to Maloney and get Fletcher / Berba for Long

I firmly believed at the beginning of the season that clean sheets would be at a premium because of the attacking qualities of the plays being bought pre-season. I started cheap - solid start - but am tempted to go uber- cheap :-

    Jaas - Begovic

    Baines - Clark - Gunter - Demel - Davies

    Michu - Dyer - YaYa - Cazorla - Hazard

Tevez - Van Persie - Lambert

Ok,ok.....who do I drop from the front each week?.......who cares?

I'm fed up with benching my only scoring defender each week, I might as well start doing it with my attacking players as well.......could be a fun/frustrating ride.......

I cannt understand why no love for Ashley Cole here?
When ManU, ManC, Liverpool are struggling to keep CS, only Chelsea and Arsenal def are the big sides we can invest to.

Verm and Cole most nailed on in their teams. But Verm injury prone and fixtures not good, while Cole'price this season is only 6.5M (cheaper than 1M last seasons).

Chelsea look solid too atm, why not any WC team have him?

Deschamps is not exactly a genius himself.

"I am not going to create a problem that I do not need today. But if it were to happen [Lloris 2nd choice at Spurs] then it would need some consideration. I do not want Hugo to find himself in this situation."

he says, and does exactly that - causes an unnecessary problem

Yeah, I don't get why Deschamps is trying to be a pain in the a** in this matter. This is a club matter and no other coach should mess with it. Lloris needs to prove he is better than Friedel, he can't just hope to break in a big club so easily.

So there seems to be plenty of decent ways into a decent-looking Sunderland attack:

    Fletcher
    Sess
    Larsson
    Johnson
    McClean

Who do we think is likely to do best out of that lot? I'd like one of them in my WC team and I'm leaning towards Fletcher with McClean a close second.

Ignoring the fact that he might not appear great value - Is Ian Harte's position in Reading under serious threat? There was fear of Shorey taking his place but that has yet to transpire...

With free kicks, corners and possibly even penalties I'm thinking he might be worth a punt...

Why haven't Man Utd yet lined up as...

    LinDDG
    Raphael Rio Vidic Evra
    Valencia Carrick Scholes Nani
    ------------------- Kagawa -------------------
    ------------------ Van Persie ------------------

It's their stongest 11, imo. Even with Rooney back, he can play wide left in a Podolski type role and benefit from his work rate and defensive abilities. Cleverly, Anderson or even Phil Jones alongside Carrick if Scholars can't play the 90.

Well beck and Chico as the change ups from the bench.

United's first choice team for this year

            DDG
            Rafael Vidic Ferdinand Evra
            Carrick Scholes
            Valencia Rooney Kagawa
            RVP

            Kagawa is known to play well from the left and he will interchange with Rooney for most the game. The thing is, Ferguson rotates so much that there is every chance that any player from that could be dropped in any week to accomodate the following;

Cleverley, Evans, Jones, Smalling, Nani, Young, Welbeck, Hernandez

United's squad is pretty deep so expect rotation, the team above is IMO the team that would play in a big match.

My teams pretty close to your pre WC team. Assuming you got around 75 pts this round, I really don't see why you should burn it yet. There are few players with horrible fixtures and you got the three must-have tev/rvp/haz.

You'd be really really stupid to WC with that team. The only player who stands out as needed to get rid of is Noble but he is your sub mid anyway.

Leave it, you're fine for next GW, get Noble out when you can, Baines vs Newcastle is hardly a must have but try and get him in after this week.

      great comment!!

      Think Kagawa will start?

I think it will be 451 with Kag in the hole and VP lone striker.....

          I must be missing something

people rave about him form an fpl perspective on here, i see nothing more than a tidy player adjusting to a league, uncertain of significant game time and with just a lucky open goal tap in so far. Better options at that price

He looks a fantastic player, but either he needs to adapt or united do; for years now united have looked to get the ball out wide and in behind teams. For those reasons, you can play with Scholes and Carrick type players in a 442, who sit deep and switch play, pinning the opposition into the final third. In Kagawa, they now have a player who knows how to play quick give and go's in more central areas, but only Rooney (and perhaps RVP seem to be on the same wavelength). Scholes with a few less miles on the clock would be ideal...

I admire Fergie for trying it, but without a central midfielder that will get forward from deep (Cleverly?), i'm concerned Kagawa will be pushed out left in a 442 or used as an impact sub.

As an aside, I watched Modric play his first game for Real Madrid and he took up far more attacking positions than i ever saw him do for Spurs. I believe the reason for this is the style of build up. Spurs tend to play on the break utilising the pace of Bale and Lennon. Modric would have to bust a gut to keep arriving in the box. Instead, with possession changing sides more frequently he adapted his game, taking up good positions and linking play from deep. At Real Madrid, the short passing and possession game allows him to play either role naturally.

You could argue Siggy and Cazorla only benefit in those systems too. Michu certainly seems to be benefitting from Swansea's patient attacking style. I don't think it is a coincidence they found two such prolific attacking mids, given that Siggy was signed on loan and has gone off the boil at Spurs.

So, back to Kagawa. I really hope Fergie persists with the 441/4231 formation. He'll be well worth his 8.5m price tag if united jell.

I really want to sell him in WC team, but still not brave enough
I think he's slow and didnt contribute much to Swansea style, Swan played like they only had 10 men on the pitch

You're picking one game in isolation that wasn't to your liking. Every game is different and teams can stifle players in certain games. Plus Swansea lost Naylor early on which was bound to disrupt their style of play. Michu is a quality player.

Need some advice please guys and gals...
Shall I make a move or stick this week
Think my defence needs a tweak, but originally saved some money for Yaya to Hazard
Options in would be Hazard Cazorla Ridgewell/McAuley Podolski
Not sure if I need/want Jarvis if Carroll is out

    Vorm (Tremmel)
    Baines Saylor Gunter (Demel Clyne)
    Yaya Jarvis HBA Michu (Guthrie)
    Rvp Tevez Adebayor

Are Morrison's returns (at least his set pieces) not likely to be lessened when Brunt fully returns? I'm thinking, at 5.8 Brunt might even be the better choice...?

Fair point - I had him last year and he did let me down (although I think he might have got me an assist at some point).

That said the same logic didn't prevent me from picking N'Zogbia again this year...

I'm interested to know why you've played your wildcard? Your team looks good and is scoring well.
The only very obvious expensive exception is Bale who currently doesn't look to me as if he could score in a whore house.
Maybe one more for a 4pt hit would cover you nicely.

I think to be honest it was a bit of an over-reaction to being very unhappy with the shape of my defence and wanting to bring back in Chealsea attacking coverage.

Defensive wise Tierney was a non-starter and Lescott was an expensive rotation risk.

I feel I made a mistake in picking two Wigan players as I wasn't happy playing either on away trips and I felt this left me very restricted in those weeks.

Attacking wise I wanted Torres back and Kacaniklic was a short term risk that doesn't look to pay off and there were a number of mid-priced midfielders I was keen to get in. And as you say Bale was weighing me down.

All in all I saw about 6-7 transfers I wanted to make that I felt would significantly benefit my team over the next 6-8 weeks whilst giving me the opportunity to gain value over the break, respond to the transfer and protect myself from international injuries.

It probably counts as a knee-jerk as my team was in passable shape, but I'm not unhappy with the decision.

Still no WC used but burnt 4pts last week trading Rooney out and 4 this week getting RVP in. Strategy is to downgrade Cech to Al-Habsi to raise funds (he rotates well with Ruddy) and sit to catch the form/fixture uprades. Any advice for a first time player with 206pts so far would be appreciated.

    Provisional GW4 team:

    Ruddy (Cech)
S Taylor, Cuellar, Clarke (Demel, Hangeland)
    Hazard, Michu, Pienaar, Kagawa, Snodgrass
    RVP(C), Tevez (Graham)

Nice team and nice score.. 🙂
The risk is that u will bench a player who cost 6.0 (or more) and possibly be benching lots of points and having a hard time to pick your team.. Maybe downgrade one midfielder to someone like Guthrie and upgrade Graham to someone like Fletcher or Berbatov?

Looks alright mate. Id try and lay off taking 4pt hits every week but as long as you dont that looks good. I personally dont like Kagawa and would have Santi instead but thats just my opinion. This then leaves you with RVP as United cover and Santi as Arsneal cover.

Played my wildcard and downgraded: a keeper, two defenders and a midfielder to get...

Baines (only true essential defender, as far as I can see?)
    Hazard, Michu, Yaya
    Torres, Tevez, RVP

Is it worth it? (Leaves me almost nothing on the bench at all)...

If I do remove Torres, I can upgrade to a keeper who may play (Ruddy/Jaas) and might be able to get Kagawa in as well?

But Torres is nailed on as Chelsea's only really viable forward. Thought it may be worth risking...???

How far do you guys look ahead?

Im worrying (using that term pretty loosely) about who to captain GW5, with Man City playing Arsenal and United playing Liverpool it makes the obvious rotation of RVP and Tevez a hard choice. Thinking already how to do this, and with Chelsea playing Stoke and Spurs playing QPR it might be time to start thinking about how to get in a worhtwhile captain from either of them.

    People agree?
