Our refresh of the Watchlist rankings, giving our view on player picks for the next month or so, is now available in your right sidebar. This week’s update finds Chelsea returning to the radar, while the form of West Brom and Everton also see climbs for their key assets across the positions…

Goalkeepers

Michel Vorm holds his top rank, amidst upheaval in the Swansea back four following the injury to Neil Taylor and a three-match ban for Chico, which will see him miss two league encounters. The Swans keeper is being pushed all the way by West Brom’s Ben Foster, however, after a second clean sheet against Everton boosted his stock; with fixtures falling in his favour, he presents a very strong keeper option if you’re not already looking to Steve Clarke’s defenders.

Jussi Jaaskalainen is again the budget option to consider below these two, having sealed a second home clean sheet in the win over Fulham. Wojciech Szczeseny is a consideration after returning from injury – his fixtures are stiff but, with a newly disciplined back four in front of him, he looks a good option – his stock slightly tempered by concern that he may not reclaim his start from Vito Mannone.

Defenders

Leighton Baines climbs to the top of our rankings here, despite the 2-0 setback at the Hawthorns. The fixture list suggests that Everton will be in profit at both ends of the field in the next two months and Baines looks by far the strongest option if you’re spending big in defence. His ascent is helped by City and United’s current inability to claim clean sheets, reducing the value of other options in Baines’ bracket.

Swansea’s Angel Rangel is toppled, then, but holds in second spot with the continued promise of returns from a kind fixture list. Team-mate Ben Davies was a consideration to oust Rangel as the Swansea option here, given that the young left-back looks nailed-on, at least in the short-term. Davies is available for a budget price and will surely start at Villa next time out, although Michael Laudrup has stated he is searching for backup which could threaten Davies’ start. We’re reserving judgement on this, keeping the more expensive Rangel in our Watchlist rankings.

West Brom’s Gareth McAuley is our pick of the West Brom defenders – while we’ve previously favoured team-mate Liam Ridgewell for his greater assist potential, his left-back position is now under threat from new signing Goran Popov – that’s a concern. McAuley, in contrast, looks nailed on and has shown greater goal threat in the opening three matches.

Thomas Vermaelen is another heavy-hitting defender who has enjoyed a stock increase. Three clean sheets have provided handsome returns, although with Carl Jenkinson available as an option, interest in the Gunners skipper has been tempered. With Bacary Sagna nearing a return, however, Jenkinson’s start will soon come under pressure. That will either have us turn to Kieran Gibbs or, if you have the funds, the goalscoring threat of Vermaelen.

Guy Demel is the top budget option in the rankings; we’re still waiting confirmation on the extent of the injury sustained against Fulham but, for now, we’re monitoring this as a minor knock. If fit, Demel looks real value having seemingly cemented the right-back role for the Hammers.

Midfielders

Eden Hazard returns to action and, not surprisingly, claims top spot in our midfielder rankings. With Swansea’ goal threat Michu remaining in second spot, these two will surely find place in many a Fantasy squad in the next few weeks if they’ve yet to secure their spots. It’s very hard to look beyond either, given their respective form and fixtures.

Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla has emerged as a real rival for our affections, however and, despite a testing short-term fixture list, there’s clearly merits in recruiting early – prior to improved fixtures and, potentially, returns.

Everton’s kind forthcoming run is reflected in Steven Pienaar’s climb up our rankings. For my money, if you don’t have Baines or Nikica Jelavic in your squad, then Pienaar becomes essential cover of Everton’s strong form. We’ve opted for the South African over Maroane Fellaini with the suspicion that the Belgian will, eventually, be moved back to a midfield role following the recent impact of striker ‪Kevin Miralles. There’s a slight injury doubt over Pienaar, so investment should, perhaps, be delayed until we know more on his calf problem next week.

James Morrison is another player to benefit from form and fixtures and he’s perhaps an unlikely name in our rankings, particularly when you consider that we have him above the likes of Kevin Nolan, Gareth Bale and Hatem Ben Arfa. While Morrison’s returns have been under the radar so far, we see him as the prime asset to consider over the Baggies’ kind run of opponents in the coming weeks. With just over 1% ownership, he could be a very efficient differential for those worried about forming a template squad.

Forwards

It’s going to take injury or a minor miracle for our top two to be displaced for the forseeable future. While Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez have swapped places in our table, they are surely set to remain one and two for a good few Gameweeks, given their current form.

Everton’s Nikaca Jelavic is now our third striker option of choice. Again, if you can’t cover Everton with Baines or Pienaar, Jelavic looks to be the route to explore. We’re targeting the next ten games as a very positive spell for the Croatian goalscorer.

Southamptons’ Rickie Lambert is now a clear front runner in the budget bracket, although both Swansea’s Danny Graham and Reading’s Pavel Pogrebnyak offer strong alternative options here.

Dimitar Berbatov makes an appearance in our thinking and certainly has the fixtures to flourish. The Bulgarian’s bandwagon could well pick up speed if he can prove his worth against West Brom in Gameweek 4. His engine is certainly running, with Fantasy managers deliberating whether to climb on board early.

Berbatov, along with West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie, are our differentials on show here. The Nigerian has yet to cement his role in Steve Clarke’s 4-3-3 formation but we’ve still opted for him over Shane Long – the Baggies frontline has plenty of competition and is far from secure, another factor which promotes Morrison in our thinking.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Might have to stay of FPL for a while, the urge to hit the wc is becoming greater. Just created what I think is a great team.

    Migs, Jussi

Rafa (to become Huth) Baines, Popov, Ridgewell, Saylor

    Morrison, Snodgrass, Michu, Hazard, Johnson

    Tevez, Lambert, RvP

        why not?

Morrison - nailed on, huge goal and assist threat.

Ridgewell, nailed on, massive attacking threat in a defensively solid team and a magnet for BPs, he's like a cheaper version of Baines but without set-pieces and penos.

Popov - A bit of a punt admittedly, but having spoken to Daniel, a very knowledgeable and good FF player, and a guy who has seen him play many times (he's from Macedonia) Popov is very attacking, likes to take set-pieces and at 6'2 could also be a threat from the set-pieces he doesn't take.

So lets list down a few names that could be mentioned in the future that are not already a part of the so called knee-jerk brigade.

Chamberlain (7.5) - If he nails down that spot on the wing in place of Walcott. Unlikely though.
Giroud (8.8) - Major gut feel about this one.
Dembele (6.0) - Cheap Tottenham coverage in the 'doosra' mould
Shelvey (5.4) - Looks like he has a good shot on him. Influenced the Liv-Ars game very positively once he came on.
Silva (9.6-9.8) - Looks to be finding his form.
Aguero (11-11.1) - No explanation needed.
Valencia (8.9) - Most nailed on from the United midfield, imo.
Ba (7.7) - My bet for most efficient '3rd' striker. Newcastle just need to find form.
Snodgrass (5.9) - Loved every bit i saw of him in the Tottenham game.
Zamora (6.4) - If Hughes gets it right, and from what i saw of Granero, he could be a massive pick.
Granero (5.5) - On set pieces. Looked quality on his debut.
Kebe (4.9) & McAnuff (5.2) - Reading have some quality wingers on the cheap. That said, Guthrie at 4.4 and in the hole, you can't look further.
Lallana & Ramirez (6) - Southampton look good for their goals. An alternative to Lambert.
Peter Crouch (6.5) - Could be useful when Stokes fixtures look better. Adam is still a tad bit expensive.
Sessegnon (7.9) - OOP with better service. His price is a factor working against him.
Dempsey (9.3) - A true sleeper. If he finds form, could easily dispatch Hazard & Cazorla as the big 2 in midfield.
Morisson (6.0) & Lukaku (6.5) - If Wbrom continue their form & if Lukaku nails down his spot, he would be absolutely sensational imo.
Di Santo (5.5) - Found form at the end of last season and seems to have started from there at the beginning of this season. One to watch out for.

Just wanted to divert attention from the obvious pick flying around. Any more?

Dembele could be more of a shout than I thought if he takes up VdV's position. Sigurdsson hasn't been great so far so by no means nailed on.
Shelvey has too much competition from Gerrard.
Agree with quite a lot of that.

      I'd like to add Suarez.

I'd watch Guthrie...he is versatile and will not necessarily play in the hole every game...or even throughout a game. good value at that price though. I've gone for Sterling in the cheap mid category, like the cut of his jib and very attacking....albeit in an appalling side.

I'm not keen on using my wildcard this week, so is it worth taking a -4 point hit to transfer:

    Carorla to Hazard
    and then
Torres to a striker less than 9.2 million

Is Hazard going to considerably outscore Torres?

And is Hazard going to keep rising in value?

SAF likes to wind up FPL players. Lies about Evans being out for the season, rests Rooney at home to Wolves, drops DDG when Federici doesn't have a game etc. He's a master at it. And I can see him going for a biggie in GW4. And this one would top the lot.

Kagawa looks a fantastic player, but either he needs to adapt or united do; for years now united have looked to get the ball out wide and in behind teams. For those reasons, you can play with Scholes and Carrick type players in a 442, who sit deep and switch play, pinning the opposition into the final third. In Kagawa, they now have a player who knows how to play quick give and go's in more central areas, but only Rooney (and perhaps RVP seem to be on the same wavelength). Scholes with a few less miles on the clock would be ideal...

I admire Fergie for trying it, but without a central midfielder that will get forward from deep (Cleverly?), i'm concerned Kagawa will be pushed out left in a 442 or used as an impact sub.

As an aside, I watched Modric play his first game for Real Madrid and he took up far more attacking positions than i ever saw him do for Spurs. I believe the reason for this is the style of build up. Spurs tend to play on the break utilising the pace of Bale and Lennon. Modric would have to bust a gut to keep arriving in the box. Instead, with possession changing sides more frequently he adapted his game, taking up good positions and linking play from deep. At Real Madrid, the short passing and possession game allows him to play either role naturally.

You could argue Siggy and Cazorla only benefit in those systems too. Michu certainly seems to be benefitting from Swansea's patient attacking style. I don't think it is a coincidence they found two such prolific attacking mids, given that Siggy was signed on loan and has gone off the boil at Spurs.

So, back to Kagawa. I really hope Fergie persists with the 441/4231 formation. He'll be well worth his 8.5m price tag if united jell.

At home though and against weaker oppositions, i see fergie using 4-4-2 which has been most effective. When teams come to park the bus, 4-4-2 is most effective.

Thing is, Wigan aren't weak. Their 343 is perfect against a 442, limiting Rafael and Evra's forays forward. Should be goals in this game!

Ah there you are. I agree about Rio & Vidic having a bad game, but how long can you look past Evra's inconsistency? It's been way too long. I originally liked Evra, but his performances have just been below par for quite some time now.

I'd suggest wide left in a Podolski-like role. His work rate and passing ability could be utilised better there too. The correct answer is upfront, in the hole AND wide left, as United expect to be in so many competitions that rotation is inevitable.

Woody, I like Kelvin in sticks, but it may be another couple of GWs before SOU's fixs sufficiently improve. Jenks looks a dead player to me, Sagna will be back soon, and I would serious question if Baines can justify his place. You could spread a bit more across that back line for better home rotation, I suspect. Fletcher could be a great call, what's he, £6m?

Is it right to wildcard this team or am I jumping the gun?

    GK: De Gea (Federici)
DEF: Zabaleta Cuellar Hangeland Saylor Clyne
MID: Yaya Hazard Pienaar Michu Kacaniklic
    FOR: RVP Tevez Graham

£1.4 in the bank. Pienaar could be injured, Kacaniklic is under huge threat, SAF rotated De Gea, Zabaleta is now under threat from Maicon, having Graham and Michu seems a bit overkill while there are better options in defense. I'm also aware of Cazorla's potential.

Interesting development ML leader has activated his wildcard. Should I be worried? He's 20 points ahead of me, by virtue of him having Hazard from the off, but I had banked on the fact that I had RvP and Michu in my pocket, I can see him wc at least one of those 2 in.

But on the plus side, I still have a wc in my pocket for use later which may turn things in my favour

I don't think he will be, the only player I can see him bringing in that might do some damage who I don't have is Cazorla. Since he is likely to have Tevez, Torres and RvP up front he's weakend himself elsewhere, and if he doesn't have RvP I could murder him next week anyway.

Like me he has had Tevez and Torres from GW1

Im planning on the following:team format:

    4.5 5

    4 4 5 4 7

    All under 8 million.

    Torres Tevez RVP

So basically Im having all mid price midfielders to have the ultimate forward line.

What are your opinions on this strategy? Are there any mids over 8m that you would consider essential and should cause me to reconsider this plan?

      Basically similar to my team...

      5.5 / 4

      5 5 5 4 4

      Hazard Kagawa Nolan Pienaar Al-Hamadi

      Torres RVP Tevez

So basically doubling on any Utd/City/Chels hammerings, whilst still maintaining a half decent defence and two other mids who score. Might in time do Kagawa>Cazorla though not sure how I'll fund it unless Torres goes...

fellow non-Hazard owners - just thinking if we eventually have to buy him at a high price and then he loses form/picks up a small injury, we won't have to think twice about selling and losing too much value as we bought him late... that's a little silver lining that i cling to ðŸ™

        he does not play attacking.

what is happening is that Mancini is shifting him around the pitch as needed throughout the match

he typically plays defensive mid, until there is a real problem (like v Liverpool) when he gets moved up, because Mancini knows that he can't help but score (like several times last season)

But the point is, he picks up regular points from regular starts, and few Citeh players can you say that about. In my team, there's nobody cheaper I would sway Yoyo for, he only gets sold if I can manufacture an upgrade, perhaps to Carzorla, who is starting to look like a steal at £9m.

It's a very good question. I can actually do it tomorrow but only if Yaya goes up 0.1 and Cazorla doesn't - I have 0.9 in the bank. But up until now I hadn't contemplated the idea - so probably no.

It keeps changing (and Rukawa might have outdone me)

        Foster Begovic
Baines Cuellar Clark - Davies Demel
Hazard Cazorla HBA Michu - Guthrie
        RVP Tevez Lambert

        0.0

I'm afraid I packed it so tight it will explode as soon as I lift it to the overhead shelf

Nolan seems to be the main man, while Pienaar sharing points with others

unless you really need the extra funds by getting nolan instead of pienaar, get pienaar

RMT: nothing in the bank, 1FT

    Howard* - Fed
    A.Cole - Lescott - Hangleland - (Barnett) - (McCathney)
    Bale - Michu* - Pienaar* - Yaya* - (Noble)
    Tevez* - RVP* - Graham

*Players that I am happy to keep. Others like Hangleland, Graham, Cole and my cheapies are grand for the moment but I am not entirely happy with them.

Making funds for Hazard is vital now. Lescott to cheaper defender (McAuley, Santon, Williams), then Bale for Hazard. Worth a 2 point hit?

I guess you could jump on the Cazorla bandwaggon. Cazorla - Bale ?

Cheers never thought about Corzola too much but he has Chelsea and Man City coming up soon which is kinda keeping me away from him at the moment. I am already thinking wildcard because I think i have two expensive defenders (Cole & Lescott and their money could be spent elsewhere)

Ok wildcard activated. Getting RVP and Hazard in the same team is more important than saving a wildcard

So thinking of relucantly dropping Toure so what do you expets think

    a) keep toure and berbatov up front
b)keep toure and fletcher up front
c)Johson for toure and Jelavic up front
d)Pienaar for toure and Fletcher up front
