A stunning victory at Anfield for Villa. A first win for QPR. A Felliani headbutt and not a single clean sheet in sight; at least Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney provided the predictable. Here’s the Stock Check on Saturday’s events…

On the Up

Adel Taarabt
The Moroccan delivers at last. After generating some superb performance statistics, QPR’s mercurial talent delivered a telling brace in the win over Fulham – the R’s first victory of the season. At 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and with strong fixtures to come, Taarabt could yet start to deliver on his potential as a midfield acquisition and will surely collect some investment, particularly if Marouane Felliani picks up a retrospective red.

Christian Benteke
His fourth and fifth league goals of the season, coupled with the assist for Andreas Wenmann’s strike, ruined the Liverpool clean sheet and boosted the Belgian’s growing reputation further. Available at 6.5 in the FPL and with his pivotal role in the Villa attack undoubted, Benteke is another contender for that third striker spot. It’s Chelsea away next, with three home games in four to follow, as the resurgent form of Villa’s fledglings continues to flourish.

Robin Van Persie & Wayne Rooney
We discussed the merits of pairing the two in our forward lines and today they both delivered with Van Persie opening the scoring before delivering the assist for Rooney’s fifth goal in three league matches. Van Persie has now scored in his last four league matches: both look to be in relentless form with favourable fixtures to come. It seems only rest and rotation can de-rail them.

Demba Ba
An eleventh goal of the season provided little than a consolation for the Magpies but underlined Ba’s case for a place in our forward lines once again. At 8.2 in the FPL, Ba is presenting strong value in the same bracket as Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov and with QPR at home next, he could enjoy another surge in ownership.

Yaya Toure
A second goal in consecutive matches, the Ivorian has rewarded those who have kept the faith after going 12 without registering a strike. Toure is ranked second only to Carlos Tevez in the City squad for overall FPL points but, with the African Cup of Nations absence looming from Gameweek 22 onwards, his potential is limited to the next few weeks. Toure could possibly miss up to six league matches from January.

Anthony Pilkington
It was Robert Snodgrass who sparkled at the Liberty stadium last weekend but, typically, it was Anthony Pilkington’s turn to come to the fore for Norwich this time around. The winger provided the opening strike and added to his tally with the assist for Wes Hoolahan’s winner. A clear-cut target in Chris Hughton’s in-form squad remains fuzzy.

Going Down

Maraoune Fellaini
An alleged headbutt on Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross was seemingly missed by the matchday officials but, judging by the reaction to the incident in the Sky studio and David Moyes’ post-match comments, we look set to see retrospective punishment for the Belgian with an automatic three-match ban for violent conduct beckoning. Monday will doubtless bring further news. The template could be breaking, then; we can only hope that Michu escapes his White Hart Lane clash without a yellow.

Luis Suarez
It looked as though the Uruguayan was turning in performances this season that hinted at a new level of consistency, but, having notched in four consecutive matches, Suarez has now drawn a blank in his last four. With other forwards flourishing, we could now start seeing a decline in Suarez ownership, despite his promising Christmas schedule.

Rafael
With Chris Smalling and Phil Jones available as options, it seemed only a matter of time before Rafael became subject to rotation. Having provided an assist in an impressive showing at City last time out, the decision to rest the Brazilian today was down to a tight hamstring, with Sir Alex Ferguson confirming that he’ll be available for next weekend’s trip to Swansea. Regardless, with Jones and Smalling able deputies, Rafael could be prone to rest and rotation over Christmas.

The Norwich Defence
Shaun Maloney’s strike for Wigan shattered the Canaries clean sheet at Carrow Road and means that they have now gone five without a shut-out. Mark Bunn has kept goal in all five of those matches: clearly John Ruddy’s influence is considerable and badly missed. Sebastian Bassong was the most popular transfer in going into the Gameweek; as we mentioned in this week’s ScoutCast, he may have to maintain his goalscoring rate to repay that investment.

Grant Holt
Having returned to the scoresheet last weekend, the Norwich skipper drew a blank and hobbled from the field with a hamstring injury late on to make him a potential doubt for the festive programme.

Dimitar Berbatov
The Bulgarian has now gone six league starts without a goal, while Martin Jol’s side have scored just four goals in that six game spell. We’ve seen Berbatov’s stock and ownership decline steadily in recent weeks and, despite his undoubted talent and favourable fixtures to come, we could yet see that trend continue after today’s Loftus Road defeat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yeah...I get the impression that Rodgers just doesn't really 'do' defending...would you agree? He's all about possession and his style is actually quite attacking.

I sort of get the impression that possession IS defence to Rodgers. If you have the ball you don't need to defend. But then when Villa did anything it seemed like the team wasn't mentally prepared for the onslaught or to put in tackles. It works fine when an away team are toothless but a star like Benteke had a field day!

It certainly seemed that way yesterday. We dominated possession then someone gave the ball away in midfield and they streamed forward and our defenders were all over the shop. There was no structure to the defence at all, they all just looked stunned that the ball was even there.

Yeah, it's almost a shock to the system to be defending when you have 70% possession. It's almost absurd having that much possession and conceding 3 goals and only getting a consolation near the end. It's a bit like Celtic beating Barcelona recently. Was Downing playing LB?

Certainly feels like a wake up call for Liverpool anyway...it seemed so rosy until today. Villa are great at the smash and grab/counter attack thing lately. They did it really well against Man Utd. Maybe it's purely down to Benteke...I don't know. It annoys me that they look decent as it's one more team that is likely to not be in the relegation dogfight with us 🙂

Reading, QPR, Wigan/Southampton...fingers crossed they all do worse than us!

Sess has great underlying stats...I'm sort of envious of owners, I think he's a great differential and we're improving our attacking threat every game.

Interesting stat for you, Sunderland had more shots on target than Man Utd yesterday. 7 to 5.

A few random thoughts from last nights games:

RVP is actually playing as well as he was for Arse last year, but he just isnt scoring as many points because Utd have players who can score all over the pitch, not least Roondog.

Pretty gutted to wake up knowing I have 3 Pool players in my team, and no way to rectify this without taking a hit.

Afromans inevitable suspension is actually a blessing in disguise for me. Can now get Bale in without taking any hits. And from a less selfish perspective, we can start to break up the boring template MF.

Hmmm, I don't know...RVP is top FPL scorer...is he really not scoring as many points? I agree that there are certainly more options for Man Utd to score goals than Arsenal with RVP

He's definitely not as prolific as he was last season, but probably even more consistent 😯

Do you mean prolific as in scoring hat tricks/braces on the regular? I think that's a worry going forward...penalties help with adding an extra goal here and there...and of course like Thegaffer82 says the goals are just shared around more. This is why I don't think RVP > Rooney in the Jan WC is unthinkable. You might be paying for roughly the same kind of thing with added pens.

I'm starting to warm to the idea of RVP>Roon. Seems Roon still has penalties (although as a Man Utd fan I'm not too sure) and is getting forward plenty.

However, I'm warming even more to the idea of a Roon/RVP partnership upfront. Could be a game-changer

That's my plan atm. Keep RVP and Rooney until the Jan WC then likely ditch RVP for Aguero/Torres etc. He basically gets a goal in most games but just doesn't get the hat-tricks as they share goals.

Clyne is more attacking because he joins the attack. Fonte is your typical 'get up for a set piece' CB. Clyne assists, Fonte might score the odd goal but nothing more.

Never ceases to amaze me how short our memories are in this game. Suarez was off the pace yesterday but still could have had a hatrick. This is what you get from him. But look at the forward stats and he'll be up there all season.

So are we finally ditching Berba? It's getting painful now.

It's pretty clear that without Ruiz in the team Berba is being shackled in a deeper role. And whats worse is that it isnt working for Fulham as their form plummets and their goals dry up.

The trouble is with a 'start every gamer' like Berba, Suarez etc...., they are so hard to sell. You just know know they are always one game away from a big score. That game just comes when you sell them 🙁

      b) is the sensible option. But I'd honestly go with a). I really think Aguero is number one at City and is looking pretty sharp (needs to find his shooting boots though).

You can explain his absence in the team so far on him being wrapped in cotton wool by Mancini so that he could be unleashed fresh on the champions league and secure their passage to the next round (haha)
