Season Review

Team of the Season – Juan Mata

A summer of non-stop football ensured Juan Mata started the previous season in a somewhat sluggish fashion. The Spaniard’s participation in both Euro 2012 and the London Olympics gave him little time for recuperation as Chelsea prepared to get their domestic campaign underway in mid-August. While new Eden Hazard was quick to vindicate the Blues’ decision to shell out over £30m for his services with three opening sets of double figure hauls, Mata had picked up just eight points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game by the time Gameweek 5 came around:

Highly priced across the Fantasy games ahead of last season, Mata had taken the Premier League by storm in his debut campaign at the Bridge. Initially under the guidance of Andre Villas-Boas then subsequently Roberto Di Matteo, the playmaker racked up six goals and 16 assists after arriving from Valencia and with 162 points accrued, had afforded Fantasy managers another premium priced option for our five man midfields.

The Statistics

A rest over the first international break of the season and the Gameweek 4 clash against QPR proved instrumental, giving Mata the time to recharge his batteries and address his poor start. Ahead of Chelsea’s fifth league match, his price had dropped dramatically, slipping from 9.5 to 8.9; a sideways move to the in-form Hazard saw the Belgian’s price soar from 9.5 to 10.3 over the same period, by comparison.

As Hazard began to toil, Mata exploded into form. Producing a goal or assist in each of his next six appearances, he set the tone for the rest of the season as he chased down his team mate and eventually surpassed Hazard’s feats across the Fantasy games. Fears of Mata suffering as a Fantasy force from Rafa Benitez’s rotation never came to fruition – his compatriot handed him 22 starts in 26 fixtures, compared to nine starts in 12 league matches under Di Matteo.

An outstanding strand of consistency saw Mata either score or assist in 21 of his 31 starts (Hazard managed 16 hauls from the same number of first XI appearances), with 11 goals, 18 assists and 27 bonus points bettering his respective tallies from 2011/12. Finishing the campaign on 212 points, Mata was joint-third top scoring player overall in the FPL game and second for midfielders, leaving Hazard trailing in his wake on 190 points. Strangely, the Spaniard kept his most explosive displays for road trips, with five of his six double figure returns coming away from Stamford Bridge – indeed, his only 10+ points haul in front of his own fans arrived on the final day of the season.

The Prospects

Having already plied his trade under three managers in his two seasons in London, there seems little doubt that Mata will continue to flourish regardless of who takes the reins next. A price increase across the Fantasy games seems inevitable and with Hazard likely to match Mata’s initial cost, we’re left with a real dilemma when it comes to the Chelsea midfield. With Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott also offering huge attacking potential, balancing the budgets in our five man midfields may never have been this tricky.

While Bale and Walcott have no obvious, cheaper alternative options in the Tottenham and Arsenal midfields, the end of season form of Oscar may hand us a more budget-friendly option at the Bridge. The young Brazilian netted in three of his final five appearances to suggest he’s now starting to settle – a poor overall first campaign, however, should ensure his cost stays in the mid-price bracket.

Chelsea’s Super Cup duties against Bayern Munich, which are likely to afford them a double Gameweek at the start of the season once again, will result in substantial investment in the Blues main assets right from the off. If the club’s forwards situation stays the same, it’s likely that Fantasy managers will load up on Mata and Hazard to begin with, though with room for just one or perhaps two heavy hitters in midfield to begin with, the greater goal threat of Bale and Walcott could sway many from viewing the Blues playmaker as a must-have.

How come England have made 4 subs, but on BBC it says Ireland's 3rd sub is their last one?

talking about u21s fantasy. How many have actually played it before ?

Because I have and I can tell you it's notoriously hard to pick the right players and lineups for a start. All the big name players are in the squads but like the last tournament etc. Spain left out some of their stars I remember picking Mata, who I don't think even ended up playing 90mins the whole tournament, their defense was full of non regulars apart from one aswell.

So it's really hard to pick a team. My advice would be to select a team now with some research on who to pick like others have done on here and wait it out until game day arrives and we get to see the lineups. Even then you could have players selected that absolutely kill it in their regular teams but do poorly in u21s.
Normally I just select the ones I think will do well and hope/pray they get close enough to the highest score then the following gw I usually use the WC and redo my team.

What do you guys do ?

I'm playing the odds and going with the likes of Isco, Holtby, Rodrigo, de Jong etc. If they can't excel in an u-21 tournament there is something wrong. Looking a bit into fixtures, qualification win/loss and goals for/against records and current season appearances and goals for club and the 21's.

If you piece everything together and pick a squad backed up by the stats and playing time you are doing as much as you can. If a bunch of randoms end up doing better only Captain Hindsight can step in and do his work.

that's the thing I've played it a couple of times and every player you think will do well before tournament starts end up playing poorly through out or just don't even make it on the pitch.

The only 3/4 I'm sure will do well are Rodrigo, de Jong, Dzagoev and Ince 2 of them miss the 1st game which i so annoying.

    Suarez is gone now.

He said: “I have a contract with Liverpool but it would be hard to say no to Real Madrid.
“I have spoken to Brendan Rodgers, and he knows what I want. He understands my situation.”
Suarez is currently serving a 10-game ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic and was last year suspended for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

Now the Uruguayan insists he is sick of the negative headlines and says a witchunt is forcing him out.
He added: “I am happy at Liverpool but this year was very hard for me, my wife and my daughter.
“I have worked hard since I was a kid and I’m not prepared to stand British journalists any more.”

I honestly think it's fake. Like Suarez said himself his name sells papers.

Not only that Pool won't accept any offers for him when they might make CL next yr with a couple more buys. Losing him now will cost them any chance of signing better players. They don't need the money and FSG better start looking for a bunker because if it happens I can tell you it will be alot stronger than OKC tornado.

Only way I see him at Real is they get some players swaps going the other way because right now they can't attract anyone close to Suarez ability.

Suarez is such an inaccurate striker though. The only reason he has so many goals is that he gets so many more chances than the others. Great dribbler though.

Think Bale and Suarez will both stay but there's more of a chance Bale will be going then Suarez.

Bale has actually come out and said he wants to play in la liga so it will either happen this summer or next.

What's the big issue with this "No Surrender" chant? They were condemning it on the radio this morning. But, on the other hand, the do gooders on the news are always telling us that we shouldn't give in to terrorists.?????

As Suarez & Bale are now gone, I hope this doesnt mean Wenger feels he wont need to strengthen his team, in order to secure 4th place next year.

I sense an Ivanovic wagon brewing. His attacking threat at RB has warped his potential at CB. Bad value imo, Luiz is much better. If Mourinho does manage Chelsea then getting in a Chelsea defender could be important.

    "Guillem Balague ‏@GuillemBalague
I will let you know about another Liverpool signing tomorrow if I get it confirmed. And I am as excited about that one as I am of Aspas. That LFC signing confirms the policy of the club: clever, potentially good signings. Potentially being the key word. But exciting nonetheless enough stuff going on today with Aspas and Luis Suarez to keep going for the rest of the day. And Pellegrini confirming he is off to City"
