On a day which struggled for goals and headline makers, City’s stuttered victory against a confident Hull saw the Fantasy landscape shift and generate a series of selection headaches. Elsewhere, two largely ignored midfield assets earned precious points to boost their stock.

The Game Changer

Alvaro Negredo second goal in as many games has announced his arrival in the Premier League and accelerated doubts surrounding Edin Dzeko’s status. Introduced from the bench at half-time to replace the Bosnian, Negredo latched onto a fine delivery from Pablo Zabaleta to head City into a lead which they scarcely deserved.

With a 25-goal tally in La Liga last term, Negredo’s pedigree a proven marksman was unlikely to be kept shackled for long. He’s taken opportunities in his last two outings as a substitute and will now surely push for a start for the Gameweek 4 trip to the Britannia. While that’s good news for Manuel Pellegrini’s attacking options, for Dzeko owners, today’s events were far from welcome.

The Underused

Robert Snodgrass monopolised our attention in the Norwich midfield over the pre-season, resulting in new signing, Nathan Redmond, being largely overlooked. The former Birmingham winger has, however, shone far brighter than his team-mate thus far, adding an end product to several sparkling performances to seal the points against Southampton.

Priced at just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Redmond has earned just over 1% ownership to this point. That’s surely set to change over the international break with Snodgrass owners doubtless considering the trade that would free up a precious 1.5 in funds. With Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs in the next five, however, both Redmond and Snodgrass come with a hefty caveat attached.

While Redmond was picked out in this week’s ScoutCast by Granville’s Fantasy Island Risk pick, Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa was also singled out and was our headline act in the Differentials. Like Redmond, he duly delivered. A constant source of creativity and threat throughout, Ben Arfa’s superb strike settled the clash with Fulham at St James’ Park. Unlike Redmond, the Frenchman has a string of favourable fixtures which lend themselves to further investment and a marked increase in his modest 4.5% FPL ownership.

The Selection Poser

As mentioned, Negredo’s emergence could well sound the death knell for Edin Dzeko’s security of start. The Bosnian is currently owned by over 19% of FPL managers following his impressive opening to the campaign and kind 7.5 valuation. Those managers will now be highly concerned going into the break with Negredo surely in line to get the nod for the trip to Stoke.

Gael Clichy owners also have plenty to ponder. Whilst Zabaleta benefited from clean sheet and assist returns, the former Gunner was consigned to the bench with Aleks Kolarov given the nod on the left of the City defence. Presumably, Clichy paid the price for the defeat to Cardiff. Unless Kolarov’s start was part of a regular plan in home matches against teams likely to “park the bus”, Clichy may be another name scrapping to earn a start at the Britannia as Pellegrini puts his stamp on the City squad.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Macgregor, Boruc
    Vidic, Zaba, Walker, Wilson, Chambers
    Yaya, Walcott, Oscar, Redmond, Ward-Prowse
    Soldado, Benteke, Negredo

Thinking if Kolo Toure is fit I'll downgrade Walker and spend the money in midfield.

I would change, but this is really just the "Can you afford to have RVP in your squad argument" over again. I have him for now, so I opt for the WC option. It probably comes down to how well you are going to be able to rotate your midfield options for the fourth MF position, because you should be able to find three defenders out of that mix andyou are going to start all three forwards.

Hard to say. I can't say I've watched enough of either of them yet to have a personal opinion. Norwich is a better squad, though, I think, so if he seems to be getting playing time, I think I'd lean slightly to Redmond.

Yeah, I know.... but you also have to consider then just how many penalties a team may actually get in a year and if that is enough of a factor. I had Koren initially for that same reason but dumped him when Brady got that penalty opportunity. It would be a legit reason to keep Brady. Gotta watch a few games and decide based on the player... Or dig into the stats on the site here if you are into that.

Just caught up on a debate a couple of pages ago about the Zabaleta captainers being lucky. I think the point people are missing is that the change in bonuses makes defenders far more valuable this year and valid captain choices. Of course there was a chance Hull would score but there was also a (IMO better) chance Silva would do nothing. In the end Hull showed more going forward than I expected so it was nerve racking but the old adage 'never captain a defender' is no longer true.

      Hi Drinky,

Same dilemna. I guess there are 3 options available to you:

      1. Leave as is until w/c.
      2. Buy Migs but you only have 5.5.
      3. Buy myhill at 4.5 to rot with Borat.

Mc Gregor at Hull? No one's really consuidered him. Not many cs about with him I feel.

I'm torn between Migs and 4.0 with Myhill/Borat. The thing with Migs is that Toure is a cheaper option into the Liverpud d.

        Let's start with defence.

Do you go Citeh, Man U or CHS with their better fixtures? In that case you are looking at Terry at 6 mill.

Will Coleman keep up his scoring with tough fix coming up.

        Toure?

I'm thinking 3 cheap mids is the way to go. Something along the lines of (and this is a very rough draft):

      DDG 4.0

Yes, Terry is definitely another good shout. (The above team was more to indicate structure than the exact personnel.)

There are far more tempting defenders than midfielders just now. Walker is another tempting option.

          Zaba/Rafael - Coleman - Collocini/Santon - Terry/Rafael - 4.0
          Walcott/Lampard/Mata - 7.0s/8.0s - 5s/6s - 5.0 - 4.5

Completely lost with what to do with my team. Was happy before yesterday but now seems to be more problems than I know what to do with. Obviously Cech and Dzeko need to go and so do Mirallas, Toure, Clichy and Williams but maybe to a lesser extent?

Anyone care to offer some transfer advice on this lot? Do I need to wildcard?

    Good morning folks!

Poor gameweek so far this week which is confirmed by the low average score. Bad week for me, but a bad week for many so far! πŸ™

What I wanted to say anyway was, all I'm seeing around here is talk of wildcarding and asking for opinion. People keep talking and talking yet haven't actually got the cojones to pull the trigger. What really matters in all of this is how YOU play and the decisions that YOU make, if you listen and follow the crowd on every single thing you do, you'll only ever be as good as that crowd. Simple logic right? The winner is either the first to be on the bandwagon(s), or did many different things that worked compared to that crowd.

Its about being innovative, intuitive, independent and improvising where necessary. If you are talking a lot about wildcarding, then its obviously on your mind right? The question is, why is that? Its obviously for a reason? Is it a valid one or a kneejerk? If you feel deep down you would benefit short term and long term, then go for it!

A lot of teams shouldnt be thinking of wildcarding and this is when the advice is helpful to the player, but equally it could work out for a lot of others by doing it now!

For instance, I'm "content" with my team bar a few players. But I've still been thinking about wildcarding....you live and die by these decisions. The winners are also the risk takers, risks that come of more often than not. I know I cant stay with this team and players forever, I need to make changes and strike lucky with players who start to score big from the moment I get them in. I've asked peoples opinion and to a man they've all said dont wildcard when looking at both of the teams. But I'm still seriously considering doing it, yes it could be a catastrophe and end the season for me. But it could also work out. I'm doing OK so far, but I still feel I can squeeze more out, if it fails and I pushed it too much, then oh well. If it works, then brilliant.

We cant forget the positives or the negatives. Both need to be looked at in the same way and get the same level of attention. I feel too much we look at one or the other.

So when you take EVERYTHING into consideration, in terms of what can happen in the future by using it now, price rises, players yet to materialize and become options etc etc. Ultimately its YOUR decision and yours alone, and the crowd should be taken with a pinch of salt. Like I said, if you play the template and do everything that they do....where are you gonna go? πŸ˜†

Yes, fair point about responsibility. No harm in gathering opinions though. What's making it hard this year is the number of doubts over several positions/players. There's been a high no of cs and everyone's wondering if exp d's are the way to go.

So many uncertainties. Time is our biggest ally right now. Which is why I'm prepared to wait.

Not at all. Aimed at the community as a whole mate. πŸ˜†

I still feel its too early for what its worth, as really there havent been many big hitters materialize yet. I cant see it stopping like this forever. If you want to get van Persie in, which a lot do (perfectly fine) you have to look at moving those pricey players out. There is no guarantee they will come good of course, but we are talking about world class players here. They can turn on at any minute. Look at Bale last year, he didnt start brilliantly last season, Mata was in stages aswell.

Todays newspaper will always be a yesterdays newspaper eventually. What team looks good now, may not be good next week, or the weeks after.

        The game is always changing.

Most of us have been guilty. πŸ˜†

Its us that makes the decisions and in the end its yourself you should back.

The only thing to come out of this season early on is that defenders and more so centre backs are obviously heavily favored in terms of bonus. Does that mean we all switch to 5 premium defenders?

          Of course not.

The premium players in midfield will come good eventually. Walcott and Hazard especially. Then you have the likes of Coutinho, Michu, Silva and the little bit cheaper Mirallas. They might not all come good, but some are bound to and when they do, people will be all over them again.
