While expectations were modest, tonight’s Selhurst Park encounter brought a close to the Gameweek and provided a showcase for an array of budget and mid-price talent, whilst also serving up a goal of rare quality.

The Game Changer

Having struck a true goal of the season contender, the night has to belong to Pajtim Kasami. His winning header on the opening day at Sunderland saw the Swiss midfielder emerge as an unlikely budget favourite. Having blanked in his last four starts, tonight’s stunning volley will have re-ignited that early season interest.

Priced at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Kasami could offer a true alternative to the likes of Ravel Morrison and United’s Adnan Januzaj. Having started seven of eight league matches, his place in Martin Jol’s lineup has looked assured – his returns perhaps stifled to this point by Fulham faltering form.

Tonight’s convincing victory might signal a change and bring Kasami to the fore as a viable option as a fifth midfielder to free up funds for the big guns. Long-term, Jol’s plentiful options on the flank will provide stern competition. Tonight’s sublime goal offered his manager a reminder of Kasami’s potential as a special talent, however.

The Underused

Dimitar Berbatov already has fewer owners than Kasami – an extraordinary statistic when you consider that the Bulgarian is a proven goalscorer and creator of pedigree. Like Kasami, Berbatov has suffered from Fulham’s start to the season which has seen his return limited to just a single assist in his seven starts before tonight’s goal.

Having slumped to just 7.1 in price, there’s little doubt that a Berbatov, in his pomp, could prove a significant differential if acquisition can be timed with an upturn in form. With three of the toughest defences up next, that time is perhaps some way off. A run of four home matches in six from Gameweek 12 could be the window to cast an eye in Berbatov’s direction should Martin Jol’s men build on tonight’s result.

The Selection Poser

The capitulation of Ian Holloway’s defence at set-plays in the second period will ring alarm bells for those banking on the budget appeal of the Palace rearguard. Danny Gabbidon and Joel Ward are present in almost 8% of FPL squads but, on tonight’s showing, their potential, even as bench warmers, looks limited compared to fellow promoted assets at Hull City and Cardiff.

Arsenal are next to face Palace – not the fixture to help rebuild the confidence after a drubbing. There’s little doubt that many will have the armband on their Gunners’ assets come Saturday’s deadline.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So the RMT tool is telling me to captain Suarez. However, Palace's home form is clearly abysmal. Captain Giroud/Ozil?

Paulinho has had 22 attempts on goal this season with a 45% accuracy, only Sturridge (24) has had more.

Im getting Paulinho for Eriksen. Even when they play together Paulinho is always running into the box.

siggy and enrique out for clyne and lallana. No idea why. Sticking with Eriksen for 'he's good to watch' reasons. Coutinho and walcott dieing has ballsed up my season really. Midfield wise. Kind of managed to still do okay thanks to my strikers and keeper.

Eriksen is great, it's just spurs are mechanical. He was on the bench because of the internationals. I don't expect spurs to do anything against Hull, and he's dropping, but i can't take him out unless I take a hit. Enrique I had to because he's injured and falling and clyne is cheap and rising. Eriksen is the link between mid and attack spurs need.

I would imagine Arsenal will rest a few player vs Palace this weekend after the Dortmund game, definitely an opportunity to give Ozil and maybe Giroud a break.

A few could be rested, though I doubt Wenger will play Bendtner ahead of Giroud. I also see Özil as so integral to Arsenal success now that I doubt he'll be rested. It's hard to predict rotation among Cazorla, Wilshere, Ramsey, Arteta, Rosicky, and Flamini (if fit) -- I think they'll be fighting for four spots, with Walcott and Chamberlain soon to return too.

Is it a good idea to get Suarez this week? Home vs WBA could be more tough than it looks, I think.

    Moses - Michu - Özil - Ramsey - Barkley
    Lukaku - Sturridge - Giroud

Worth a hit for Moses & Lukaku --> Lallana & Suarez?

Not for me Natt. West Brom have a good record at Anfield - they've won the last two times they played there and beat Pool 5-0 on aggregate last year. Seem to be a bit of a bogey team, for some reason. I'm actually considering playing Amalfitano over Whiitingham @ Norwich after seeing how poorly Pool defended against Newcastle and how well West Brom counter attack away from home.

Still, past performance is no indicator of future results, as we know. Should be a few goals in the game. Selling Lukaku for a hit would feel wrong. Why not just sell Victor?

Thanks Billy. That record of WBA is really a good point. There'll be some money left after sale of Victor. So, I'm looking at the option to use it.

If money allowed, would you choose Lallana or upgrade Victor to Oscar / Hazard?

If Southampton's fixtures were better I'd definitely have Lallana but since they are appalling after the next 3 I'd look long term and get Oscar, Hazard or Silva. If you really have your heart set on Lallana though he's well worth in for the next 3 and should bring you a profit as well.

For anyone playing the uclfantasy game, I have a few questions :

    1. Is Diego Costa back for this week's game, and would you pick him ahead of Turan/Villa for Atleti cover ?

      Hi Enzo,

      1. Diego Costa is doubtful. He traveled with the team but Simeone said in press conference that Costa is undergoing some "difficulties" and he won´t decide whether he will play or not until a few hours before the match. I personally went with Turan. Still, you will be able to see the lineups and decide accordingly.

      2. I´d say both are good prospects. I would pick Sneijder over Drogba just because I´d rather have other forwards..

      3. I would.

Arsenal fixtures in our Frantic Fortnight:

    (0. PREM Arsenal 4 Norwich 1 Sat 19 Oct)

    1. CL Arsenal v Borussia Dortmund* Tue 22 Oct
    2. PREM Crystal Palace v Arsenal Sat 26 Oct
    3. LEAGUE CUP Arsenal v Chelsea Tue 29 Oct
    4. PREM Arsenal v Liverpool* Sat 2 Nov
    5. CL Borussia Dortmund v Arsenal* Wed 6 Nov
    6. PREM Man Utd v Arsenal* Sun 10 Nov

Followed by a two week break.

    Game-by-game thoughts:
The problem is 6 games in 20 days. The solution from an Arsenal point of view is that two games definitely stand out there as lower priority. I think Wenger will play full strength lineups for the 4 games marked as (*).

For Palace I don't think we'll be playing anything like a "second team", but I think players who have started both Norwich and Dortmund will have some risk of rest to avoid playing three games in a week. Unfortunately Flamini is confirmed out for Dortmund (he will definitely be available for Palace as it's a precautionary 5-day concussion ) so this means another starter from Norwich will need to play again in Dortmund. You can see rotation is on the cards as Wenger actually attempted to rest Ramsey for Flamini for Norwich, but his concussion put paid to that. So would expect something like Arteta Ramsey / Wilshere Ozil Cazorla against Dortmund. I would then expect the returning Flamini to replace 1 of them for Palace. There's a lot of possibilities there because many of them can play multiple positions so it's hard to call, though I'd say Arteta/Ramsey/Wilshere are likelier ones to be rested, the former due to his age and fitness and the latter two for being in the wars and the minutes they've racked up. I think Caz is the least likely to be rested given he's just returned from injury and he was happy playing every game last season. Ozil would be a tricky one to rest because of his importance to the team, and resting him would reopen the problem of our left wing position because Caz would probably move to the hole.

I don't think Wenger will play a full strength side against Chelsea in the League Cup, especially given the importance of the other games. He's notorious for using the League Cup as a youth cup so I don't see him suddenly playing the first choice eleven against them. I would expect the lineup to be stronger than the one against West Brom though. The likes of Gnabry, Miyaichi, Eisfeld, Zelalem could well get another start, still.

By resting first choice players over the Palace and Chelsea games I think Wenger should then be able to play full strength sides in the following 3 huge games in 8 days, against Liverpool, Dortmund and United.

Same, I actually looked into this because I was considering getting him for Palace. Looks like we can count on him starting against Pool and United (unless something awful happens) and will have to cross fingers on Palace. Decent chance he won't play against Chelsea though imo.

I agree, and the worrying thing is I don't see any reason why he wouldn't play Rosicky in the hole against Palace to rest Ozil. The big question is will he rest Giroud, but I think he may use the Chelsea game to give Bendtner a run out. No one is safe really I don't think 🙁

Yeah looking at the subs I realized Rosicky is a ready replacement too. Rosicky & Flamini in for two of Dortmund players is a possibility.

We all know how concerned we were about Giroud being our only real striker, I guess we'll find out now how that goes! You'd think it's unlikely he'd miss both Palace and Chelsea - and surely he'd be likelier to play against Palace as it's more important to get the result in the league.

      Good post Dr I.

As you say, Özil is so crucial, can't see him being rested unless he has a niggle or Arsenal have sealed the title. Might be taken off early. On the rest, I guess you know best.

Yeah the early sub offs may come into play as they did against Norwich. Might have to be content with a 60' from Ozil or Ramsey this week.

Great post, and agree that League Cup will be less than full strength -- all things being equal this is one of the kinder busy stretches we could ask for, though. The other Europe-playing teams will maybe be facing tougher squad rotation in this stretch.

Yeah, I was expecting worse when I looked at the fixtures. The Palace and Chelsea games in the middle are a bit of a gift that give us a breather after the international 'break' (which actually gets players tired and crocked) and the Dortmund game. If we can get through this spell OK who knows where this season will lead 🙂

Natster - are you still about?

If you are, go into the member's area > team stats > defending > shots conceded in box > last two / four weeks. See who's down at the bottom there - very interesting, eh. Not what I would have expected, at all 😉

Yeah Saints are pretty irresistible defensively, I can't believe I owned a Saints defender last season but not this season. Completely the wrong way round!

Lovren does seem to have some goal threat from headers, fixtures are worse than Swansea's though their defence may be better.
