Our Saturday morning regular has been shifted a few hours forward, as we roll out a trio of overlooked alternatives for your Friday night consideration. Arsenal’s Spanish schemer, Swansea’s big-money summer signing and United’s budget-friendly centre-half all arrive on our radar – crucially, as the fixtures pick up pace over the festive period, all three look strong options for this weekend and beyond:

Santi Cazorla

Despite returning to the Arsenal first-team in Gameweek 8, the little Spaniard remains firmly under the radar. With Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil sitting in 58% and 32% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams respectively, Cazorla continues to be overlooked yet, with a goal and maximum bonus points in his previous home fixture against Liverpool, he’s starting to hint at the form that harvested 205 FPL points in his debut campaign in England’s top-flight.

Having scored for his country in the recent international break, Cazorla is in fine form as the league leaders seek to take advantage of three home games in four. Certainly, the visit of Southampton won’t be easy but with games against the likes of Hull and Cardiff directly after, he could be set to prosper. Coming in at 9.6 in FPL – with a 2% ownership – Cazorla will set you back 8.7 in the Sky Sports game and 6.0 in the Sun Dream Team, and, as his 12 goals and 13 assists last season suggest, his attacking contribution will be vital as Wenger’s side look to build on a run of four successive wins at the Emirates.

Wilfried Bony

It’s been a stop-start campaign for the Ivorian since arriving on these shores during the summer. Michael Laudrup may have splashed £12m on Bony’s services but a lack of full pre-season has seen him garner more game time in the Europa League, with five starts and five sub appearances in the Premier League an indication of his stuttering domestic campaign.

Nonetheless, the stats are impressive. Over 18 appearances in all competitions for the Swans, Bony has produced 10 goals and three assists and, having bagged a brace in the previous league encounter at home to Stoke, he looks a secure starter against struggling Fulham tomorrow afternoon. Certainly, with Michu still sidelined due to knee and ankle problems, Laudrup can ill-afford to bench the new boy – Bony’s impact is summed up by the fact that his side have scored 11 goals in the five games he has started, compared to four strikes in the other six. At 7.4 in FPL, 8.0 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, he also has games against Newcastle, Hull and Norwich in the next five to maintain his recent rise to prominence.

Jonny Evans

Having started five of the last six at the heart of United’s back-four, the Northern Ireland international looks to have established himself as a regular in David Moyes’ plans. With the new manager utilising Rio Ferdinand somewhat sparingly, Evans has been handed the chance to impress at the back, with his prospects further boosted by Moyes’ preference for Phil Jones in central midfield.

With Jones now a doubt for the weekend trip to Cardiff, Evans is set to slot in alongside fit-again Nemanja Vidic at centre-half as United look to build on the clean sheet accrued against Arsenal in the previous Gameweek. As the fixtures arrive quickly over the festive period, Evans – at 5.0 in FPL, 7.2 in the Sky Sports game and 5.0 in the Sun Dream Team, – seems the least susceptible to his manager’s rotational whims and offers a relatively budget-friendly route into a backline that has a very kind schedule from Gameweek 14 (EVE, NEW, avl, WHM, hul, nor) up until the New Year.

Crazy thing to say, there is no rule stating you have to captain each player at least once. Just because City put 7 past Norwich doesn't mean Newcastle are going to. Rooney, RVP, Suarez and Aguero all more reliable captain shouts imo.

Exactly. There's really not many players I even consider for the armband. Pretty much has to come from that pool you mentioned every week for me. World class players in top form playing for top teams, explosive and consistent and preferably with set pieces to fall back on.

what's your reasoning on mids? just because the strikers are firing on all cylinders?

only thing I'm worried about is Cardiff doing a Crystal Palace on us :\ blame my hesitancy on our poor early-season form..

honestly will probably end up going Rooney only to watch Aguero tear Spurs to pieces..

Statistically, mids are the lowest FPL point scorers. In 0-0, 1-0, 2-0 results, defenders are absorbing all the bonus points, otherwise the forwards, no cherries for the mids.

Waiting for the scenario to change before captaining mids.

good stats. I rotate him with Januzaj. Got points against MUN (till last gameweek, I made it a point to field MUN opponent - crazy...). But was disappointed when he was not involved in any of the 3 goals against Swansea. No points this week around against SUN, and he will be out. Ravel, Sess, Amalfitano are waiting.

I posted last night about my reluctance to captain Suarez because he's in the early Saturday game. A few people seem to regard this as superstitious. Is it though? I don't believe it makes him any more or less likely to perform, I just don't like the feeling of an early captain fail. It feels like your gameweek is ruined before it's got going.

So on that note...Rooney or Aguero?

Surely an early captain hat trick would set you up nicely for the weekend. Works both ways. Just pick the guy you think will get the most points. FWIW I would captain Rooney if I had him.

It would of course. Switching Suarez to Ozil at the last minute a few weeks ago still haunts me though. Ozil blanks in the early game. Suarez bangs in a hat trick later. Nightmare.

The Suarez/Ozil situation I described above is the first time I've gone against this 'superstition' in a LONG time. I vowed then never again. Listening to reports of Suarez's goals flying in was painful. Of course he could do it in the early game today but somehow it's not so bad when you know your captain is still to play. Might just be me that it makes sense to! 🙂

Stick with Aguero or go for a differential with Eto'o? Rivals probably have Aguero so I was thinking of makng the 'sneaky choice' of Eto'o..

I have a gut feeling that one of Aguero and Suarez will fail miserably while the other will get a huge score.

    RVP(C) eliminates this conundrum.

I went Ravel, have both as well. Moyes doesn't seem to know whether he should start him week in and out (which he should, Young, Valencia and Nani are worthless)..

I'm in a similar dilemma with Januzaj and Barkley. I figured Januzaj was sure to start this week, but FFS, Guardian, Whoscored all have him not starting, same with Barkley.

I think if Januzaj does get time on the pitch, seems he's more likely to score against Cardiff than Ravel will against Chelsea. But this seems to be the year of surprises, Chelsea haven't looked that strong and Morrison is in form

Roja, the thing about Rooney is, while he can take a game by the scruff of its neck himself, those around him (like Nani, Young, Valencia, Ando) are weak..he has no help aside from JZJ and RVP..and Carrick is out so there's no anchor..

Keep aside FPL, Kagawa and Januzaj behind RVP and Rooney would be lethal...

Coming back to FPL, and the kind run of fixtures of MUN, who do you think is most nailed on in the defence?

        probably Evra?

I don't trust anything at the moment with United..only nailed on players when fit in the squad are Rooney, RVP, Carrick, Evra and De Gea.

have picked Evra for my Dead Team (no transfers allowed after the lock in a few hours; we started late after I saw the idea here)

and yeah they would be..with a world class holding mid..I've been wanting Moyes to throw Rooney up top and Kagawa in the hole for ages..I always feel like RVP has to work so much harder because he gets isolated due to the formation..
