A pulsating Merseyside derby gives us plenty to mull over as both sides’ attacks rack up the points. Romelu Lukaku’s return to form, Philippe Coutinho’s first strike of the season and a potential toe injury for Leighton Baines come under analysis this evening:

The Game Changer

Sold on by over 100,000 Fantasy Premier League managers leading up to today’s derby clash, Romelu Lukaku delivered a stinging blow to those who had lost faith by bullying his way to a brace.

With just a single goal in his last four matches, patience with the Belgian was undeniably paper thin in a landscape that has seen the heavy-hitting forwards deliver consistently. It was ironic, then, that Lukaku should overshadow Luis Suarez, despite the Uruguayan again offering his own growing army of owners a goal and an assist.

The day belonged to Lukaku, however, who reaffirmed his status as a value proposition for our forward lines with a second double figure haul of the campaign. A record of seven goals in eight league appearances for the Toffees speaks for itself and, on a day that also saw Olivier Giroud break his recent drought, it underlined the merits of holding firm, even when form suggests that looking elsewhere should be a priority.

The Underused

Phillipe Coutinho’s first goal of the season arrived in a match where his influence was overshadowed by the likes of Suarez and Lukaku – this was a far more muted performance than his showing in the 4-0 win over Fulham in Gameweek 11.

However, it’s returns that count and with Coutinho getting off the mark for the campaign, there will now be those considering whether the classy Brazilian prospect can find a level of consistency that could possibly warrant the 8.5 FPL outlay. Currently he claims just 5% ownership.

Clearly Suarez is the most vital option in the Liverpool attack but, with fixtures in their favour and Daniel Sturridge owners switching out in their thousands, there could yet be a place for Coutinho in our seasons, with the Brazilian’s strike no doubt catching the eye of those Fantasy managers looking to double up on Rodgers’ flourishing attack.

Liverpool have now scored 19 league goals in their last seven outings; Coutinho’s presence can surely only help maintain that kind of form.

The Selection Poser

With Roberto Martinez announcing post-match that Leighton Baines will undergo an x-ray on a toe injury, the left-back’s Fantasy owners will be anxiously waiting on results, whilst perhaps pondering whether the time has come to shift out the Toffees man.

Should there be doubt over his availability for the Gameweek 13 Goodison clash with Stoke, Baines will then be set for an away double header at United and Arsenal – it seems certain that he will have to turn to attacking points to justify his 7.7 value in those two matches.

His price tag is undeniably a factor. Despite claiming over 27% ownership in the FPL, Baines sits at just 0.2 above his initial FPL valuation and therefore a trade out would not lead to a significant loss of funds, whilst offering a sure route back once Everton’s fixtures ease.

The news on Baines’ toe could have a significant impact on next week’s transfer trends.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Why didn't Barkley get an assist for his header down to mirallas?

Ross Barkley wasn't given an assist for the first Everton goal as Leighton Baines free kick was deflected by a defender not Barkley. There was no assist for Baines as the deflection changed the intended destination of his pass - See more at: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/rules/#sthash.rIsEj6vX.dpuf

That's not to say the two don't usually equate to the same thing but it's an important distinction to make - public popularity skews betting odds.

Hey bud, you reckon Cabaye's a legit option? And Remy?

Remy is brilliant value, great form and deserving his points - trouble is there's great options elsewhere for strikers. Cabaye is reasonable value, will perform at his price point but never going to be prolific.

How's the season treating you? 🙂

Thanks GWM. Quite liking the look of Newcastle, you guys should be in for a top half finish. Thing with Remy is Newcastle strikers in the recent past - the likes of Ba, Cisse all great FPL options. I wonder if Remy will become "near essential" soon at his price. Amazing consistency. Possibly looking at letting go off Rooney to improve my midfield, so wondering if I should go Lukaku/Remy.

Pretty poor start to the season. Yourself?

Started slowly, much improved in the last month or so (87 this week) and into the top 100k finally. Hoping I can build on it 🙂

If some big midfielders start to fire then I'd be all over it, as it is the money is still there to spend on forwards. Lukaku and Remy both great options but I'd give the edge to Remy personally, especially given the next few fixtures. Benteke in your thinking?

Cheers Garg, I'm quietly chuffed 🙂 Only Amalfitano left to play so a ranking drop to come but regardless it's a bizarrely good week. (My beat of the season when I actually expected about 30 points!)

              87!!!! Massive score man, congrats.

Quite a few big mids are starting to click innit. Already a template can be seen forming - Oscar/Haz, Ramsey, Ozil/Walc, Gerrard/Cout (and probably Silva/Michu when fit and in form). Hence i'm pondering shifting funds onto midfield a bit.

Yep, it would be good to see some shift in emphasis, my team value isn't brilliant though so I don't want TOO many big hitting midfielders becoming options!

absolutely not - I think he was brilliant - Groves was about to get hurt, no way he was going to take 3-4 more shots. Glen McCrory saying its disgusting - but TBH Groves couldn't defend himself.

You're supposed to box them, but I know what you mean. No one is supposed to get injured, killed, brain damaged etc - the sport needs to protect boxers (not fighters) there.

        Martinez:

"We need to assess him because it will be a big miss for us if we lose Leighton. We are going to have an X-ray and see how it is, but I have never seen him come off a football pitch and it takes a lot for him to come off. We couldn't afford to risk leaving him on, but in the same manner we need to make sure it isn't a serious injury."
