[sbu_large_image] Fixtures

Having analysed the teams with Strong fixtures on the horizon, our second instalment concentrates on those with harder runs to come. The top two face a tricky task to maintain their lofty perches, while Southampton continue to fight with their backs to the wall as the schedule proves unrelenting for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Liverpool

lpool16
While the Blue half of Merseyside looks set to go from strength to strength with a friendly festive fixture list, the Reds face a daunting test. With trips to Tottenham, Man City and Chelsea in the next four, and just the visit of Cardiff to help catch their breath, Brendan Rodgers’ team are about to be stretched to the limit.

Injuries to Daniel Sturridge, Steven Gerrard and, potentially, Jordan Henderson couldn’t have come at a worse time, and the loss of creativity could even cast doubt over the prospects of Anfield’s prolific Uruguayan. Luis Suarez has, of course, been a phenomenon this season but these fixtures and the loss of certain team-mates are set to provide his stiffest test since returning from suspension. The defence presents less of a puzzle. With just one clean sheet since Gameweek 3, despite a bevy of toothless opponents, many managers will take these fixtures as the final signal to drop under-performing assets such as Glen Johnson and Simon Mignolet.

Arsenal

arsenal16
In a similar vein, Arsenal will need to step up to the plate to defend their spot at the summit. With three away games in the next four, including a trip to the Etihad, and their only home match in that period being a showdown with Chelsea, the Gunners’ hitherto profitable Fantasy assets could suffer a blip in productivity.

With just the first two of those fixtures being truly testing, it is unlikely that any managers holding players such as Mesut Özil, Aaron Ramsey or Per Mertesacker will drop them now. But these fixtures ought to serve as a warning to any would-be investors to postpone any acquisition until at least Gameweek 18. Indeed, suitors of Theo Walcott may view these tricky games as a small blessing, giving him time to return to full match fitness before bringing him in as a possible, potent differential.

Crystal Palace

palace16
Few would argue that Tony Pulis’ instalment at Selhurst Park hasn’t had an immediate impact on the Eagles. Having conceded just one goal in the last five games – an incredible achievement considering their early season form – the Crystal Palace defence has been the subject of an unlikely mini-bandwagon. Latecomers to the party might want to think twice before jumping on board, though, as the fixtures take a turn for the worse. With trips to Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham in the next six, only home games against Newcastle and Norwich appeal in that period.

There’s no doubting the budget appeal of Joel Ward and Danny Gabbidon, but suitors may wish to wait a week or more for the worst of those fixtures to pass, unless they have a solid rotation plan in place. Similarly, anyone scouting for a budget midfielder could do worse in principle than Barry Bannan, who has both recent returns and the numbers to back it up, but now is probably not the time to take advantage. Gameweek 20 appears to be a better time to invest.

BE WARY OF

Southampton
The Saints are still right in the middle of their trickiest patch of fixtures all season, a spell which has unhappily coincided with a spate of injuries to key defensive personnel. Mauricio Pochettino has his work cut out to arrest their descent down the table in the face of tough adversaries. Trips to Newcastle and Everton and home games against Tottenham and Chelsea in the next five look unprofitable for The Saints. Anyone still holding the likes of Dejan Lovren, Jose Fonte or Nathaniel Clyne may be tempted to part ways, while Adam Lallana’s output has slowed to a crawl, with attacking returns in just one of the last seven Gameweeks.

Swansea
As predicted by many, Europa League duties appear to have taken a heavy toll as the fatigue-hit Swans have failed to make the most of a recent stretch of kind fixtures. Not good news for Michael Laudrup, as the schedule starts to turn against his team. Games against Everton, Chelsea, Man City and Man United in the next six look distinctly unappealing for holders of Michel Vorm, Chico Flores and Ashley Williams. These fixtures, combined with the return to fitness of Michu and Wilfried Bony may also put the kibosh on the appeal of Jonjo Shelvey, whilst Pablo Hernandez has been somewhat out of sorts anyway since returning from his own early season injury. Gameweek 23 looks like a good time to revisit the Welsh outfit.

Fulham
And then there was one: Rene Meulensteen. The departure of Martin Jol has so far looked like a positive for the Cottagers – their numbers are up across the board and even the ever-languid Dimitar Berbatov has shown signs of life. The bad news is that the next two fixtures could put their renaissance on hiatus – a trip to Everton, followed by a home game against Man City, are daunting. After that, though, the fixtures take a decided upswing and the likes of Sascha Riether, Patjim Kasami or even Berbatov himself could come into contention if Meulensteen can continue to improve his new team’s attitude and performances.

This is definitely the week for something like that, would certainly help with avoiding any hair loss...

I've only ever missed one GW in the last 3 years that I can remember...

It was the Sunderland DGW last year... I was away at a meditation centre for 10 days with no contact to the outside world whatsoever...

I told my little brother to captain Cuellar for me... when I got back I saw that he scored 20pts and was pretty happy, BUT if I had watched those games live, I'd be a nervous wreck...

He got 0pts in the first, more favourable game... and only got his assist (and resulting bonus) in the last minute of the second game... I would have gone mental watching that... 😀

He's such a delightful German, and he can bake real well too. Quoted from Wikipedia: Klinsmann's family operates a bakery in Stuttgart's Botnang district and consequently he is sometimes affectionately referred to as the "baker's son from Botnang". Klinsmann is in fact a journeyman baker, having served an apprenticeship.

And then Fer > Cabye maybe next week ,
IMO look for where the actual points are this week in your case unless you have other plans for next week.

wow Spurs look really weak at the back. I wonder what AVB would give to have Caulker right now.

Vert's injury coinciding with Vert's injury means we're no closer to knowing their first choice cb pairing

Two quick questions for this GW:

    1) Who are we thinking for captain this week? Been riding Suarez but this feels like it could be a 2 point outing for him.
Suarez, Aguero, Lukaku, Hazard, Ozil? Leaning towards Lukaku but undecided

    2) Who to play in the back this week? Need 3 from this 5:
    Mert, Coleman, Shaw, Turner, Chester
Right now I've got Mert on the bench due to being away at City but it feels weird to have him on the bench.

Heres a quick run down of who I consider to be the top four picks for the captaincy this week.

Agueros points against the current top 4 teams theyve played in the league (As they are playing a top team)

    CHE: 8
    SPURS: 15
    EVERTON: 7
    NEWC: 12

    Total : 42

This doesnt include the 13 against UTD, which I would definitely class as a *Big* game.

Hazards points against the 4 bottom teams theyve played this season (as they are playing a bottom team)

    FUL : 3
    SUN: 17
    WHU; 10
    CAR: 18

    Total: 48

Lukakus points against the bottom 4 teams hes played this season (as they are playing a bottom team)

    CRY: 2
    WHU: 7
    STK: 6
HUL: 1 (while at chelsea) 2

    Total: 16/17

Rooneys points against the 4 teams closest to them in the league this season.... (mid table, how depressing) and not including Newcastle who he didnt play (as they are playing a mid table team with similar points)

    SWA: 8
    SOU: 5
    TOT: 13
    STK: 12

    Total : 38

Suarez against top opposition (as hes playing a top team)

        ARS: 2

        EV: 9

        NEW: 10

.... Then theres quite a gap until

        HUL: 2

        Total : 23

Really tough game from him, and with Gerrard out.... I'm just not sure hes a viable option this week.

I 100% disagree, he is just the kind of player who needs to finish the ball. Like Chicharito, a poacher. Those seem to be a dying breed. But I doubt Tottenham did not know that before buying him. If AVB wants him to work he needs to sort out his shambles of a midfield

Soldado looks to me to be a player who thrives on service, other than Lennon I don't see that Spurs have anyone to supply him with it, Townsend and Lamela both seem like, come inside and shoot sort of wingers. Now when you had Bale, who was incredibly good at this, a lack of goals from your centre forward could be overlooked.

If something happens to Capoue this game and Chicheres doesn't recover by Sunday then Spurs will have 1 fit CB versus Suarez (Dawson, not one of the best himself). That being said, technically they only have 1 fit CB anyway as Capoue is actually a midfielder.

I'm not asking him to buy more CBs. Its just that if he rests Capoue for this match he'll have Capoue + Dawson which isn't the worst pairing. Especially as this match is a dead rubber and Anzhi are terrible enough to be in the relegation zone in the Russian league.

he just does not have anyone to play there, I dont think it would be good for any team to roll out total youth players and let them get hammered. Every point in Europa= cash too

We'l; I don't think replacing Capoue with some youth team fella will see Spurs get hammered because people aren't realizing how bad Anzhi are supposed to be.

I went to Salzburg once. Lovely little city. Hopped on over to Baden-Baden for a day of exploring on the side. Delightful escapade it was.

Heres a quick run down of who I consider to be the top four picks for the captaincy this week.

Agueros points against the current top 4 teams theyve played in the league (As they are playing a top team)

    CHE (A): 8
    SPURS (H): 15
    EVERTON (H): 7
    NEWC (H): 12

    Total : 42

This doesnt include the 13 against UTD, which I would definitely class as a *Big* game.

Hazards points against the 4 bottom teams theyve played this season (as they are playing a bottom team)

    FUL (H): 3
    SUN (A): 17
    WHU (A)10
    CAR (H): 18

    Total: 48

Lukakus points against the bottom 4 teams hes played this season (as they are playing a bottom team)

    CRY (A): 2
    WHU (A): 7
    STK (H): 6
    HUL (H): 1 (while at chelsea) 2

    Total: 16/17

Rooneys points against the 4 teams closest to them in the league this season.... (mid table, how depressing) and not including Newcastle who he didnt play (as they are playing a mid table team with similar points)

    SWA (A): 8
    SOU (H): 5
    TOT (A): 13
    STK (H): 12

    Total : 38

And on request here is Suarez

Suarez against top opposition (as hes playing a top team)

    ARS (A): 2

    EV (A): 9

    NEW (A): 10

.... Then theres quite a gap until

    HUL (A): 2

    Total : 23

I sense this will be a really tough game from him, and with Gerrard out.... I'm just not sure hes a viable option this week. Notice that all these games are away too… not the best tally!

Apologies for a bit of a repost, have added H and A as requested, and Suarez. Aguero to me seems the standout option this week!

So just don't add Hull in there just for the sake of it I think. Thought nice work, I think the sample size on Suarez is quite small to add in here.

Probably a strain of some kind at the most. Maybe a weekend out, or a month? Of course, that kind of thing is hard to predict.

He's suspended for this weekend anyways, so may not even be an issue for owners.
