Scout Report – Fernando

Manchester City made their second foray into the summer transfer market a couple of weeks ago by signing the defensive midfielder Fernando from FC Porto. Having failed with a bid back in January, the Premier League champions returned with an improved offer and finally captured the 26-year-old in a deal believed to be in the region of £12m:

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, the Brazilian was clearly delighted with his switch to the English top-flight, as Manuel Pellegrini attempts to win the title for the second successive season at the helm:

“I am so happy to finally be joining Manchester City. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and helping City to defend the title. It is a very exciting time to be part of this football club and I cannot wait to play in the Premier League. City fans can be assured I will give my all every time I play and I’m looking forward to many happy years in Manchester. I have enjoyed my stay with Porto and I thank the club and the fans for their support during my time in Portugal. Now I am ready for a new chapter in my career.”

The History

Fernando’s career kicked off in his native country with Vila Nova back in 2005. A couple of years later, having scored three times in 57 appearances for the Brazilian third division outfit, he was snapped up by Porto on a five-year contract. Loaned out to Estrela Amadora in his first season in Portuguese football, he netted once in 27 matches before returning to his parent club in time for the start of the 2008-09 campaign.

Nailed-on in the centre of the park, Fernando has been a key figure in a run which has seen his side win four league titles, two Portuguese cups, five Portuguese Super Cups and a Europa League title over the subsequent six seasons. At Porto, a total of 232 appearances over all competitions harvested five goals and nine assists for a player who is no stranger to incurring the referee’s wrath – over the course of his career, the 26-year-old has picked up 71 bookings and been dismissed on six occasions.

The Prospects

Nicknamed “The Octopus” due to his tireless running in the middle of the park, Fernando’s signing is a sensible one from Pellegrini. Last season’s acquisition of Fernandinho proved a masterstroke and laid the foundations for Yaya Toure’s best ever year in the top-flight – with the Brazilian situated in front of the back-four, Toure was afforded greater attacking freedom and served up 20 goals in City’s title-winning campaign.

It was noticeable last term, however, that City had no viable alternative for Fernandinho in the centre of the park. Indeed, in the five games he failed to feature, Pellegrini’s side drew blanks on four occasions (against Stoke, Sunderland, Chelsea and Norwich) as their swashbuckling ways were somewhat limited by the Brazilian’s absence, with Toure taking up a more defensive role as a result.

Fernando should offer City a like-for-like alternative to Fernandinho, then, and as Pellegrini look to overhaul the central midfield area, question marks will surely grow over the futures of players such as Jack Rodwell, James Milner and Javi Garcia, with Gareth Barry already leaving for Everton. Bearing in mind City scored in every game with Fernandinho in the side, his contribution – whilst failing to catch Fantasy managers’ eyes – was vital in affording Pellegrini’s attack-minded players the freedom to flourish.

If, as expected, the City boss continues with the 4-4-2 formation that harvested 102 goals in 2013/14, Fernando’s arrival merely strengthens the champions’ options. A lack of attacking potential means few will look to bring him on board but, as Fernandinho showed last term, the knock-on effect bodes well for the likes of Toure, David Silva, Samir Nasri, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko further up the park.

so was that the death of joga bonito or the low point before the dawn of a new brazil............these things do tend to be cyclical

what was interesting was how used to failure we have become that theres hardly even any anger or emotional outpouring anymore with england......... big contrast considering you could argue that brazils national side have been rotting for some time

This generation of Brazilians don't play the Brazilian way. They got skills and they try hard but there's no joy and passion which is what's always set them apart. Still they did make the semis of the world cup before losing the plot for 90 mins. More than can be said for Spain.
Btw loved the fight from the aussies! Timmy is a legend and some very mature performances from the youngsters

I was just thinking about how culpable the manager was for selecting the squad he did and trying to think who else he could have picked. I'm not saying all of those below would have been better than what he did pick but surely some would? Can anyone think of any that I have missed?

Defense: Miranda (Athletico Madrid), Filipe Luis(Athletico Madrid), Marquinhos (PSG),

Midfield: Philippe Coutinho (Liv), lucas Leiva (Liv), Lucas Moura (PSG), Rafinha (Bayern), Ganso (Sao Paulo), Diego (Fenerbache)

Fwd: Pato (Sao Paulo), Damiao (Santos), Kaka (AC Milan), Ronaldinho (Atletico Mineiro), Robinho (AC Milan),

Yeah you have to think Miranda would have been vying with Dante for the reserve cb position (maybe even allowing luiz to do the Gustavo role as the holding mid?) and Filipe luis would have been more solid if less attacking than Marcello imo

The big miss for me was Lucas Moura, I thought in Neymar's absence (or even instead of hulk) he could have really helped and possibly Diego as he was a great play maker at Hertha (I think?) and Juve and when Brazil needed a bit of creativity in midfield when chasing the game he could have given them something.

Damiao would surely have been better than Fred?

I think any manager that keeps Luiz on for the second half after that performance needs to take at least a high percentage of the blame. That list of players shows how short sighted the Brazil squad selection was in my opinion.

It's an even playing field, a problem we all face, we just have to make sure our teams are adaptable.

I like how dynamic it makes the game, and it presents us with harder decisions. Whether to jump on the bandwagon quick, or get the player you had previously planned and lose 0.3m. Love it.

The main argument is that we won't all end up with the same teams. But then why is there already a range of ranks on here?

There are subtle complexities in the game that cause long-term variation. And I love it!

I hated when the power 5 reigned supreme. was so boring

          the subtle complexities would increase.

the main argument is that certain player's are non-entities in the game despite being instrumental to their team.

think Carrick in the year United won the title back from Chelsea. he was the only addition to the squad but made a huge difference. and the year when him and RVP won the league. I think its crap that players that have an amazing season get sub-par point totals

no. I would tone down how they reward defensive contributions by a half to two/thirds.

I would tone up the contribution of exciting mids who create chances and pass the other team off the park

I'm in your boat Carrick, the more valid options the better imo as it leads to variety. It is too easy to fire and forget with the goalscorers currently. Last year there were so few midfield and forward options it was ridiculous. There were very few who lost early leads due to the lack of alternative options out there.

The only way to make ground last year was a complete change in tactics. Post xmas I went for 4 big defenders and one big midfielder with lots of mid range mids like ramsey, nolan, AJ, mirralas, puncheon, ericksen etc and avoided Yaya and hazard for the most part and managed to climb from 311k to somewhere around the 5k mark (think I was 3.5k or so).

It wasn't impossible but it definitely wasn't easy to make ground.

I agree o a certain extent but not fully. Currently under the new bonus system assists are not fully being rewarded. A player who is by far the best player/attacker on the pitch often loses bonus points through losing bps for being dispossessed or for shots off target even though it is obvious he is the motm. The new bps system is just too harsh on these players meaning we all end up picking from the same few goal scoring midfielders.

The subtle difference's in squads which lead to the difference in ranks is usually down to good planning of defender strategies or luck with captain gambles etc imo

But I want good planning of defender strategies to be the difference! Less luck based than picking a player who happens to score or block enough shots etc..

      Disagree..

McDs have shown how to reward the defensive play. Just need to tone it down to reflect the actual field play in the fantasy points.

the McD's game has been an example of what happens when you try to reward players for more things and make more players viable fantasy options

crazy when defenders on the losing team can score as much or more than a goal scorer from the winning team

I much prefer the simple scoring system of fpl. just wish they'd award keepers a bit more for saves (say 1pt per two saves)

Yes, there ought to be some kind of penalty for poor defensive play, such as just standing around and letting the other side score.

And shots that hit the post should be counted as near misses rather than shots off target.
