We take out final glance back at Gameweek 2 this lunchtime. City’s forgotten forward and Tottenham’s form under the new man in charge come under discussion, whilst we also look at the need to afford our players the chance to find their feet before pressing the “transfer out” button.

The Player

Stevan Jovetic’s double at home to Liverpool brings the City forward into focus after last night’s win over the Merseysiders. There were concerns surrounding the Montenegro man’s pitch time as Sergio Aguero edged towards full fitness but he was once again handed a start alongside Edin Dzeko and displayed the type of deadly finishing that served up 27 goals, in addition to 12 assists, over his final two years in Italy with Fiorentina.

Despite scoring five times in pre-season, Jovetic was largely overlooked as the campaign got underway and sat in less than 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams for the encounter with Brendan Rodgers’ side. By the time the match finished, he’d leapt onto Fantasy radars with a two-goal salvo that earned his manager’s post-match praise and, with a home clash against travel-sick Stoke up next, seems poised for major investment.

Granted, as the campaign unfolds, there’s no doubt that Jovetic will succumb to his manager’s rotational whims but right now, the situation seems in his favour. With Alvaro Negredo injured, Aguero not yet 100% and Dzeko limping off with a leg problem last night, he certainly looks a strong contender for our three-man frontlines. At a time when many of the mid-price frontmen (Emmanuel Adebayor aside) have failed to convince, Jovetic, at just 7.9 in FPL, looks a very tempting route into an attack that racked up 101 goals in its way to the title last term.

The Team

A 4-0 demolition of QPR in Mauricio Pochettino’s first home match at the Tottenham helm underlined the Fantasy potential on offer at the north London club. The Argentine’s impact has been immediate since rolling up to the Lane and his high pressing approach is already reaping reward, offering Fantasy managers prospects right across the pitch.

Whilst the second half of last season saw Christian Eriksen as the sole option in the Spurs midfield, Pochettino’s arrival looks to have furthered our options in the centre of the park. Nacer Chadli managed a single goal last season and has already bettered that tally with a brace against Harry Redknapp’s side – priced at just 6.0 in FPL, the Belgian looks a real mid-price alternative if he can nail down a starting berth in the attacking midfield three. Erik Lamela’s pair of assists suggests he, too, could be set for a turnaround in fortunes, while Emmanuel Adebayor could be the pick of the mid-price forwards if he kicks on from his goal and assist against the R’s.

At the back, Spurs have been quick to hint at the resilience that helped Southampton earn 15 shut-outs under Pellegrini in 2013/14. Back-to-back goals from Eric Dier has ensured the summer signing earns most of the Fantasy attention as his ownership climbs past 10%, though it’s yet to be seen just where he stands in the pecking order once Pochettino has a fully-fit quota of defenders to choose from. Jan Vertonghen is a pricier option but if his manager’s magic touch can unlock the goal threat that saw him net five times in his debut season, the Belgian could be another Tottenham alternative arriving on our radars shortly.

The Talking Point

Jovetic’s double against Liverpool merely underlines the need to afford our squads a little more patience as the season gets up and running. For some, weeks of careful planning and preparation were thrown to one side after Gameweek 1, as more than 152,000 wildcards were wielded after just a single round of action.

After their win over Newcastle, City were poised for three home matches in four, yet Jovetic, as their form forward (and the only one with a full pre-season behind him), was cast aside by over 24,000 Fantasy managers after blanking at St James’ Park and suffered a drop in price. At such a favourable cost, the scramble is now on for his signature ahead of the Stoke clash, with over 76,000 already transferring him in.

In midfield, many lost patience with Juan Mata and Eden Hazard – two proven Premier League big-hitters. Offloaded by 94,000 FPL owners last week, Mata subsequently notched his seventh goal in eight league outings in the 1-1 draw at Sunderland. Hazard, meanwhile, was sold by nearly 50,000 managers ahead of a plum home clash against Leicester – bearing in mind the Belgian had scored 10 of his 14 strikes at the Bridge last season, there was something of an inevitability about his goal against The Foxes.

With player prices appearing to take longer to change in this season’s FPL game so far, there have been fewer fluctuations than ever in the market – essentially, this is allowing us the chance to stick to our guns and follow through on our long-term planning. Granted, while following the bandwagons, such as Gylfi Sigurdsson, can pay off handsomely, reining in our knee-jerk reactions and maintaining courage in our initial convictions can prove the wisest move.

    Can anyone explain to me the price rises and falls as shown on totalfpl? I look at it and can't work out for the life of me what it's trying to tell me.

    What's the bet Eriksen doesn't get any points again this week, then I'll be forced to sell him at a cheaper price, to buy another player who has already risen a couple times.

    Knowing my luck...

      I think if you believe in a player and he's getting involved etc (as the dane is) you have to just stick with them in light of recent and rapid drops. His time will come.

      When you boil it down it's a simple question... will Jov get at least 4 more points this weekend. I don't think so.

    So the highest value team in FPL is worth 101.7m, having played a first-week wildcard in which there were 23 transfers. Seems like they rode the transfers all week, but not sure exactly how that would have worked.

    Interesting tactic, not one I'd given much thought to (or understand, really...). What are your views - is this a sensible way to use your wildcard? Is a wildcard a good opportunity to boost your team value by trading hard throughout the week?

      It is, although maybe not week one! When I play my wildcard I select everyone who will rise that week (budget depending) first and then pick my actual team on the Friday night/Sat morning.

      Doesn't look a viable strategy this season. It has worked in the past, but 2nd price rises look harder to come by this time (they seem to have raised the threshold on last year) so you won't make much money.

      Honestly I'd just save the WC till you really need it.

      Several reason...

      Some play for value ( in fact there used to be an official league of it )
      Some play only for GW scores with their mates regardless of transfers (build a great team and a great way of playing)
      Some are crackpots

      That's about it...

      Considering that only 3 players have risen .2 or more in the first two weeks, I don't really think so. You can only have boosted your team's selling value by .3. I don't think the early wildcard purely for funds is a legitimate strategy this year.

        Because if memory serves, he and Clichy are pretty much a platoon. Kolarov gets starts against easier teams, Clichy against more dangerous teams. Stoke at home, it's Kolarov's turn. It's a recipe for 15+ points. And then he'll be dropped to the bench for 2 weeks...

    Think I might end up wasting a transfer this week. (already have 2 free)

    Although Dzeko played terrible last night, I fancy him to start against Stoke and do well. As for DDG, he plays the three promoted teams next and even though United look awful, I still think it would be a mistake to get rid.

        Wisdom has done alright though (albeit he was on my bench this week). Maybe Moore to Dummett instead|?

    Begovic (Myhill)
    Terry, Cahill, Caulker (O'Shea, Cameron)
    Ramsey, Mata, Sterling, Young, Mutch
    Rooney, Costa (Bojan)

    2 free transfers, 0 cash.

    Any suggestions for a double or triple transfer?

    Okay, I have a pretty middling position when it comes to this whole "buying the league" issue however I think something needs to be clarified.

    7 seasons of spending on transfers.

    Manchester City:

    £521,4500,00 = £74,492,857.1 per season

    Manchester United:

    £202,450,000 = £28,921,428.6 per season (note Di Maria not added, is he was then this would be around £262,450,000 or £37,492,857.1 per season)

    Chelsea:

    £293,059,000 = £41,865,574.1 per season

    So while it would not be fair for United fans to level big accusations of "buying the league" towards Chelsea (who as far as I'm aware actually have a pretty good business model), the criticism levelled at City by Chelsea, United or any other fans is in some ways justified.

    Just for anyone interested in the business side 😉

    1. HUMZAH96
      11 years, 10 months ago

      I actually admire what City have done. People say 'it's easy to buy the league' but it isn't.

      Look at what Spurs and Lpool did with loads of money

      Also, look at QPR, they can just about buy safety

          I think the initial investment has been insane but we're going to see a slow down in that, City's youth teams now are really developing beautifully and hopefully they are shifting towards a real club model now.

        Yes but the argument earlier was between City, United and Chelsea so I've presented the figures I have on the matter.

        Oh and I'm not one of those fans that bitches about another team buying the league. Merely clarifying what others were saying.

      If you look back at the 90's and you include the entire premier league era... united have been the biggest spenders by far. They stopped buying because they believed they had a youth system... and now they're sufferring.

      Veron Ferdinand Rooney... massive massive money signings. and if anyone's spending it should be applauded its city's. they havent spent big, have one of the two best squads in the league and have invested heavily in their youth system. Your numbers are taking into account the once in a life time Ronaldo sale?

      United just bought Shaw (young with the posibility of potential), Harrera, a very very poor mans Rakatic), Mata (a chelsea sub) and Di Maria (a real Madrid sub) for £200m

      1. Somalion
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 10 months ago

        Em I have to disagree in some regards here to be honest with you. City have spent MASSIVELY. In fact looking at the figures here:
        http://www.transferleague.co.uk/premiership-transfers/manchester-city-transfers.html
        and here:
        http://www.transferleague.co.uk/premiership-transfers/manchester-united-transfers.html

        You'll see that the overall figures, taking into account those from the 90s, for City are:

        Spent = £857,880,000
        Earned = £244,953,000
        Net = £612,927,000 on transfers alone.

        United:

        Spent = £685,850,000
        Earned = £327,040,000
        Net = £358,810,000

        As for the comment about Di Maria who had a great season for Real last season, a really really great one and your poor understanding of Herrera I'll take it that you dislike them.

    8. Bøwstring The Carp
      • 14 Years
      11 years, 10 months ago

      But over the last 3/4 seasons how do those figures compare?

      And over the next 3/4 how will they compare? Ultimately that's my point.

      This trend of United's poor spending is increasing exponentially over the last 3/4 seasons and has peaked this year, with another player likely to be signed before the window closes.

      1. Somalion
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 10 months ago

        But my counterpoint to that is that clubs are more and more going through these phases of big spending followed by less spending.

        Last 4 seasons

        City = £193,550,000

        United = £259,650,000 (incl. Di Maria)

        So as you say their spending has increased but as I was saying on the last page, it is somewhat understandable that teams are bumping up their spending to compete with the likes of City.

        Sure Liverpool over the last 4 seasons have spent (net so including the Suarez transfer being deducted from the spend) nearly £135 million and that's for a club that is considered a "small" in terms of spending.
