Diego Costa grabs a hat-trick as Chelsea’s 100% record continues with a victory over the Swans. Graziano Pelle bags a brace as Southampton consign Alan Pardew to misery, Sergio Aguero nets again as City earn a draw at the Emirates, Spurs’ Nacer Chadli strikes his third of the season at Sunderland, while Kevin Mirallas and Romelu Lukaku fire Everton to the points at the Hawthorns.

Costa and Cesc Run Riot
Chelsea’s summer signings continue to make the difference for Jose Mourinho and Fantasy managers alike. For the second week running, Costa shrugged off a hamstring problem to deliver a devastating points haul. A superb hat-trick against Swansea took his tally to an incredible seven goals in just four appearances. Fabregas’ pair of assists means he has already produced six since the start of the season, and while the Blues back-line seem incapable of delivering clean sheets, their two La Liga acquisitions look irresistible options in the final third. Eden Hazard owners, though, may be reconsidering their options after the Belgian failed to get amongst the points, leaving his tally at one goal and a single assist thus far.

Pelle at the Double
Southampton’s summer signing looks to have settled into scoring form at St Mary’s, after netting twice in a comfortable home win over Newcastle. Pelle had scored in each of his side’s last two matches in all competitions and took advantage of a backline that shipped three to Palace last time around – at just 7.5, he has a trip to Swansea and three very favourable home fixtures (QPR, SUN, STO) in the next five to maintain his rise to Fantasy prominence. While Dusan Tadic earned just an assist, Morgan Schneiderlin continues to looks revitalised under Ronald Koeman – the 5.6-priced midfielder grabbed his third goal of the campaign, already bettering last term’s two-goal haul.

Wilshere Sparks Gunners
A goal and assist from the England international helped Arsenal come from behind to secure a home draw with City. Handed his third start of the season in the centre of the park, Wilshere’s appeal is somewhat limited given the numerous options available in the Gunners midfield though at 6.4, with a 4% ownership, he could be one to consider for those shopping on a budget. Alexis Sanchez’ second consecutive strike and Aaron Ramsey’s assist kept their points ticking over as Arsene Wenger’s side prepare to head to Villa next weekend. Danny Welbeck missed a gilt-edged opportunity to score a debut goal and was eventually withdrawn late on – Arsene Wenger confirmed post-match that his departure was due to cramp.

Debuchy Blow Revives Chambers
Elsewhere, the injury to Mathieu Debuchy looks set to bring Calum Chambers back onto our radars. The Frenchman suffered an ankle sprain in the second period, with Arsene Wenger sounding pessimistic in his post-match analysis. Chambers would be the obvious beneficiary of any term of absence for Debuchy and would present potential value at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Arsenal are, however, yet to keep a clean sheet this season and their back-four has looked vulnerable. With Spurs and Chelsea in the next three, this is perhaps not a time to take a gamble on Wenger’s rearguard.

Aguero in the Goals Again
The Argentine struck for the third time in four appearances in yesterday’s lunchtime encounter at the Emirates. Aguero atoned for the Gameweek 3 blank at home to Stoke by netting the opener, and having also scored against Newcastle and Liverpool, looks in bloom as the champions prepare for a crucial Etihad clash with Chelsea. With Stevan Jovetic out through injury yesterday, Edin Dzeko owners were dealt a blow as the Bosnian warmed the City bench in a 4-2-3-1 set-up – even though Manuel Pellegrini had just two fit strikers to choose from, then, it seems Dzeko’s pitch time is under question. Elsewhere, Yaya Toure was preserved in yesterday’s encounter due to international exertions and City’s looming Champions League tie in Munich.

Chadli Stands Out
It’s three goals in as many appearances for the Belgian after he bagged an early opener in yesterday’s draw at Sunderland. Owned by less than 5% of FPL managers, Chadli strengthened his claim as the most appealing route into Mauricio Pochettino’s attacking midfield trio. Although Christian Eriksen – who was fielded centrally yesterday – also got amongst the goals, Chadli’s 6.1 price tag looks tempting as Spurs welcome West Brom, Southampton and Newcastle to the Lane in the next five Gameweeks.

Black Cats Middle Men Come Good
Seb Larsson picked up the Fantasy returns for the third time in four Gameweeks as Sunderland fought back to claim a point against Spurs. The Swede now has a goal and two assists to his name so far, though Adam Johnson’s strike also brought the wide man onto our radars ahead of a trip to Burnley and back-to-back home clashes with Swansea and Stoke in the next three. Steven Fletcher was omitted from the squad for tactical reasons, allowing Connor Wickham the lone forward role as Gus Poyet reshuffled his side in order to accommodate new boy Ricardo Alvarez on the flank.

Ulloa Fires Foxes to Victory
While strike partner David Nugent continues to toil for the Championship winners, Leicester’s summer signing from Brighton seems tailor-made for the top-flight. Leonardo Ulloa’s winner at Stoke takes his tally to three goals already – having netted against Everton and Arsenal, he clearly has no regard for big reputations and brought the Potters back down to earth with a bang, after Mark Hughes’ side had grabbed victory at City in the previous Gameweek. Up next for the 5.5 budget forward is a home clash against United, and with Palace, Burnley and Newcastle also on his schedule in the next four, Ulloa looks primed for points in the coming weeks.

Belgian Toffees in the Goals
Kevin Mirallas scored for the second successive match as Everton chalked up their first win of the season against West Brom. Romelu Lukaku opened his account for the campaign, while at the back, Leighton Baines served a reminder of his points potential by grabbing an assist and clean sheet against the Baggies. A home clash with Palace looks promising next, though as Roberto Martinez’ side face testing trips to Liverpool and United immediately after, many may choose to leave their investment until the schedule softens up from Gameweek 8.

Clarets Defence Holds Steady
Burnley picked up a second consecutive clean sheet yesterday after a goalless draw at Palace. Having kept out United in Gameweek 3, Sean Dyche’s side are starting to arrive on our radars as potential budget backline options, and with showdowns against Sunderland, West Brom, Leicester and West Ham, Michael Duff, at 4.0, looks one to consider – he’s now earned a couple of bonus points from each of those shut-outs.

Were it not for Scott Arfield’s missed spot-kick, the Clarets could have won all three points. The 5.0 midfield option assumed penalty duties with Danny Ings off the pitch – the striker picking up a hamstring injury in the first half. As expected, George Boyd earned a full 90 minutes for Burnley – the club’s record signing clearly presents a viable option as a midfield “enabler” given his lowly 4.4 price tag.

Resilient Villa Stun Anfield
Gabby Agbonlahor’s early winner helped Paul Lambert’s side up to second with a 1-0 win at Liverpool. After four rounds of matches, Villa have conceded just a single goal, with yesterday’s win all the more impressive given that captain Ron Vlaar missed out with a calf complaint. As their performance suggests, the Midlands side have the form to overcome their fixtures right now, though with Arsenal, City, Chelsea and Everton in the next four, the schedule remains a real deterrent.

Sterling Protected in Reds Loss
One of the favourites for this week’s Captain Poll, the Liverpool youngster was afforded just 30 minutes by Brendan Rodgers. Yesterday’s omission from the starting XI is somewhat disconcerting for Sterling’s owners – over 299,000 FPL managers drafted him in prior to the weekend deadline but, having featured for England last week, Sterling’s minutes are clearly being managed by his manager. With the Champions League also set to commence this week, Rodgers may start to rotate more often in order to cope with the schedule.

You're in a great position. Sit tight, and wait to see if there's any midweek injuries. If not, you could do something exciting like Hamer > McCarthy (if he starts today) or Marney > Boyd.

Cambiasso at Leicester is going to strengthen them up defensively a lot, even just his influence and experience in training etc. Moore may be well worth a spot in our teams.

Indeed. I've been very impressed with Leicester both in attack and defence. Besides Moore, Ulloa is on my radar. He's been overlooked due to the wealth of other options up front, but could be an absolute bargain if he keeps this form up.

Think of the following transfers for free, no hit:

Personally, I would wait until Man C have played 1-2 CL games, and got the Chelsea game out of the way, to see who is getting what game time in each competition.

      Adebayor?? Would prefer Pelle.

I love GWs like this. 6 of my 10 players blanked and yet i still get a big green arrow up to 7k thanks to Costa (C), and even more satisfying, triple SOU defence (inc. Bertrand). this is why we play FPL!

  13. Dr Funk
    • 13 Years
    11 years, 6 months ago

The price changes have ruined FPL.

A couple of weeks back I posted (and got hulked) about the negative consequences on the price changes. One of my points was that the restricted price rises mean that people are no longer punished for a lack of insight and miss the boat. You can basically have any player at any time.

I was challenged by some. Some of you still seem to think this will prevent a bandwagon occurring as theres no longer a rush to get a player. While I concede this may apply in some cases its clear that the new rules make it really easy to chase the "template" team.

The number of people on here saying "what can I do with this team" and it looks like everyone elses is really worrying. Ive had a look at the teams in the various leagues I play in - they all look the same. Look at the high ownership of so many players - has there ever been a season where just 4 weeks in so many players are owned by so many?

Now anyone can pretty much get any player at any time...

Want Costa? Get him - hes only risen by 0.2m despite an incredible record. And now more than half have him.
Want Fabregas? Get him - hes only risen by 0.3m. And now 43 percent have him
Want Ramsey? Get him - hes only risen by 0.1m. And now 42 percent have him.

People playing FPL who have never managed to break the top million before are doing really well as the skill factor has been taken out.

And to be clear, by skill I don't mean deliberately riding the price rises. I mean anticipating the form players and getting them in before others just react. These are two entirely different things that often get muddled together when people try to defend the new system.

Getting a player in before his price rise becomes prohibitive is what this game is about. Its the single biggest piece of skill you can demonstrate in a game where luck plays such a large part.

The new system is causing the game to become boring, predictable and less of a challenge.

I don't agree with your examples. Ramsey has pretty much the same ownership now as he did for GW1 - you can't blame the price rises for that. Fabregas had similar high ownership at the start - but has still gone up 0.3 (soon to be 0.4). And Costa had been shipped out by many in advance of GW3 which caused his price to drop - that's why he's at no more than a 0.2 rise so far. I'd agree that the rises are slower - not too sure about the falls - but this just makes the game different and we need to adapt. 4 Gameweeks is not long enough to enable us to jump to conclusions. But game ruined? Just no.

there are still differentials to be found, and the template changes every week, its about staying ahead - the current world no. 1 has cabbala and lukaku, and is playing 4-4-2. theres are ways to beat the rest

      Spot on.

In previous years, if you had Costa from the go, he would have risen by 1m by now, if someone else wanted him, fine, they would have to weaken elsewhere, you still get rewarded for having him early. Now, it doesn't matter, they don't have to weaken elsewhere as he's only risen by .3 despite scoring 7 goals in 4 games.

This is exactly my point. Of course there are times where the lack of a price rise might make it easier to abandon the template. But the trend is that you can now have your pick of the players at any time.

Of course you still have to contend with injuries and who you captain acts as a differential but from GW2 everyone had the same midfield and at GW4 many people have almost the same team cos there is nothing impeding you just deciding to have the players everyone else has and getting them.

Not sure this is a very solid argument...

*The three you mentioned were hardly differentials at the start of the season.

*The complaint last year from a lot of people was that price changes reinforced the template, because people were afraid to sell once prices had reached a certain point.

A template develops whatever season. People tend to buy players who do well: shocker. People's attitudes towards it depends on whether they're chasing or being chased...

"*The complaint last year from a lot of people was that price changes reinforced the template, because people were afraid to sell once prices had reached a certain point. "

This is of course a fair point and will apply to some of the people some of the time. But in my opinion the trend is for the easy acquisition of a template team as a result of less restrictive price rises.

Last year, if you didn't have Costa by now you would have had to wildcard or decimate your team in order to get him. Now - hes there for whoever wants him.

To be honest I dont agree with all this doom and gloom, boring and predictable stuff.

There was a post yesterday speaking from a similiar viewpoint that the price system has meant a more template game.

Sometimes you can get to a player first, sometimes you make a mistake and have to jump off, sometimes you have to be gutsy and abandon a high ownership pick.

Rooney is a high ownership player, he hasnt exactly been in the best of form. Naismith is also, I wouldnt want him in my team ever. Look at yesterday Sterling and Sigurdsson didnt exactly hit the points.

There is room to differentiate from the template for me personally through my third striker, defence and captain choice.

The game was boring last season too apparantly when Suarez was scoring from everywhere but did everyone who played FPL captain him for those goals? Did everyone bring him in aftyer his ban straight away? No and no again.

The game changes every week, there has been many new signed who when they bed down will open new avenues for us as players to break away from this template.

Behave. Always preferred points to rises. The casuals just chase last week's scorers anyway. The template could change to new players each week which they probably wouldn't own.

If it's that easy, why do so many have crap ranks? And if it's made so much easier for the casuals surely that's more of a challenge for us to get good ranks?

Look at the top 10 teams in the overall ranking. There is quite a lot of variation in the teams selected in there and nowhere near as template as claimed. Perhaps the problem is the strict adherence by some on here to the FFS template, particularly in replying to RMTs

This is an absolutely ridiculous post.

      1) Most players bar the "hardcore" players were not even aware of the price changes. It makes it fairer in this sense

      2) The rules are now the same for everyone so it has less to do with price rises and more to do with the players you choose and captain
      3) It is not a fantasy stock-market game it is fantasy football. It brings the game back to its true intent.

      1. Dr Funk
        • 13 Years

        1. What has awareness of the price rises got to do with it? I made it clear I wasn't talking about riding the price rises. My point is that the price rises are now less severe so you can now get any player you want, even if you missed the boat initially.

        2. They may be the same for everyone but a move from good rules to crap rules is still a bad move. Again, I think you've missed my point.

        3. See point 1.

Your just bitching for the sake of it it sounds to me.

          How are they crap rules?
          How were they good rules?

In reality they just changed the algorithm NOT the fpl rules.

I think it is you who missed the point they have returned the game to which it was intended like it was years ago. NOT just playing the stockmarket.

You do realize that this does not stop any player purchasing any player they wish?
Also you realise contrary to popular belief that playing fpl is more luck then skill?

Last year ridiculous bandwagons resulted in hyper-inflation in the game. This completely ruined the enjoyment and true meaning of the game.

      • 16 Years

I disagree with lots of this im afraid.

"Getting a player in before his price rise becomes prohibitive is what this game is about. Its the single biggest piece of skill you can demonstrate in a game where luck plays such a large part. "

This is basically a sensible statement, but in recent years the price change system has pretty much allowed you get in whoever showed any signs of being a decent bandwagon - the rewards for catching the right one (both financially and points wise) far outweigh having a few that dont pay off means that there is no thinking required. So you just load up on the latest likely bandwagon and stick with the ones that pay off. Zero skill required.

FPL have tried to address the wayward price changes in recent seasons (it didnt use to be like this when FPL started). They may have gone too far, i guess time will tell.

The skill of having the right player at the right time is still true, we haven't even finished gwk 4! All sorts of new bandwagons will emerge.

      We must adapt.

"When Mike Williamson’s attempt at a headed clearance sent the ball straight up in the air, Pelle’s attempt at a volleyed shot from 25 yards was so wayward that it became a pinpoint pass out to Dusan Tadic on the left. But although the defence could claim to have been wrong-footed, they failed to react as Tadic rolled the ball back for Pelle to tap in."
