Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this Thursday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

This week’s Captain Poll is a two-way tussle for our attentions between Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero. With 41% of the votes cast so far, the Chelsea striker slightly edges it ahead of a home encounter against West Brom – he’s scored six times in five appearances at the Bridge, failing to net just once, and faces a defence that has conceded twice in all but one of the last five Gameweeks.

Aguero has been selected by 38% as Man City prepare for the visit of Swansea. The Argentine has failed to score in two of five appearances in front of his own fans this term, though with nine goals and 57 points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game in the last six, he’s the man in form. The Swans have been decent on their travels at the back, though, earning a clean sheet in two of their last three away matches.

Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez could be real differential armband options for the Gameweek ahead. The Chelsea midfielder is seeking his third straight double-figure haul at the Bridge, whilst six goals in his last four underline Sanchez’s form as United’s patched-up rearguard limp into the Emirates.

The avalanche of votes for Costa and Aguero leaves little interest elsewhere. Cesc Fabregas has mustered 1% of votes – mirrored by Southampton’s Graziano Pelle for Monday evening’s trip to Villa. The Italian has failed to score in his last three now, but with the Midlands outfit sweating on the fitness of a number of defenders, Pelle’s owners will be giving him one last chance before the fixtures turn nasty. There’s no doubt he’s better in front of his own fans, though – the summer signing has mustered just one goal and a single assist on the road compared to five goals and three assists at St Mary’s.

Who's having to break their own promise that they would save a FT this week for the Saints exodus next week?

Only have Sakho (plus McCarthy but he doesn't matter) out so going to save and rely on Boyd. Those 2 free transfers next week will be really important to sell Forster and Bertrand for Green and Yun...

It gives me enough to turn Clyne into Baines the week after. Leaves me with Baines and Ivan to play every week, plus 1 from Yun, Hutton and Moore (if he plays of course). Not so strange now 😉

I have to save this week no matter what. Can't risk it since I have Fab, Costa and Pelle all on 4 yellows. I could end up with 3 suspended players next week.

He scored 10 league goals from open play alone last season, plus 10 assists.

Not like it particularly matters. Cesc would have half the number of assists he has this year if you took him off corners and free kicks, but no-one seems to point that out.

Penalties still earn 5 points (and bonuses) when they go in.

But you can't discount 3 Hazard goals because they're not from open play and keep Fab's 4/5 corners. They've accumulated points because they've been given set pieces. Otherwise you might as well pick Matic and then say 'he'd have as many assists as Fab if he took corners, and as many goals as Hazard if he took penalties, or as many goals as Costa if he played up front'.

    Forster
    Dummet Chambers Baines
    Sanchez Hazard Siggy Downing

only two bench players this week: Duff, Wisdom

      Azpi.

People are buying Chelsea defenders for their good fixtures/clean sheet potential. Azpi has got bonus points in every game Chelsea have kept a clean sheet this season. Add in the fact that he's the cheapest of the lot and it's a no brainer.

Sakho has ACON coming up, Austin will flatter to deceive and Walcott isn't worth bringing in as he'll be injured again in no time.

There are also injury and rotation concerns with Sakho. So pissed I brought him in last week for a hit.

He plays in midfield for a poor, injury ridden Utd team with average fixtures. Costa plays lone striker for the best team in the league, with the top assister in the league, with the best fixtures in the league.

    Forster
    Baines Clyne Dummett
    Sanchez Fabregas Chadli Siggy
    Aguero Costa Pelle

Subs: 4.0 | Boyd Duff Moore
    1 FT, 0.1 ITB

    Plan for next week:
    Forster + Clyne > Guzan + Naylor

With wildcard I can get this team 😀

    Guzan - Foster
    Baines - Azpi - Naylor - Duff - Yun
    Fabregas - Silva - Siggy - Chadli - Downing (or Fab - Silva - Sterling - Siggy - Boyd)
    Aguero - Costa - Austin

RM: "We're checking Leighton on a daily basis - we're not sure if he'll be fit for West Ham but you can never rule him out."

Why is everyone so sure he won't make it? Judging by international "injuries" it's likely he's perfectly fine.

Even if Baines declares himself fit, RM might choose to rest him to reduce the risk of a flare-up

Have 2 FTs, 0.9m in the bank with a team that has served me well over the past 2 GWs with 99 and 74 pts respectively. Feeling compelled to use 1 FT so as not to waste a transfer. RMT please.

    Adrian, Jakupovic
    Moore, Dummett, Chambers, Clyne, Baines
    Sanchez, Hazard, Downing, Brunt, Boyd
    Aguero, Costa, Pelle
