Having assessed those teams with Strong upcoming schedules yesterday evening, we now turn our attentions to those with less favourable fixtures across the next four-to-six Gameweeks. Three of the current top six face testing times ahead, whilst nearer the bottom of the table, Burnley face a tough task to steer clear of the drop zone.

Arsenal

“frisking

The Gunners are set for a tough time over Christmas, with four of their next six fixtures on the road. Trips to Liverpool, West Ham, Southampton and City will test their resolve, though it’s worth noting that Arsenal have failed to score just once all season – away to Chelsea – and with Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud all offering options in the final third, their potent attack could still prevail.

Home clashes against QPR and Stoke certainly offer a greater degree of optimism but with Laurent Koscielny still struggling due to injury, it remains to be seen if the north London side can improve upon a run of two clean sheets in six. Fit-again Mathieu Debuchy, at 5.2, is the cheapest regular, though Calum Chambers should benefit if Arsene Wenger continues to court caution with Koscielny’s fitness over the busy period.

Southampton

“frisking

It’s five defeats in a row now for the Saints after last night’s demoralising cup loss at Sheffield United. With their confidence at a season-low, it’s difficult to see how Ronald Koeman can turn his side around in light of a schedule which pits them against Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United over the short-term, whilst trips to Palace and Newcastle will be far from straightforward, either.

Koeman has Morgan Schneiderlin, Victor Wanyama and Florin Gardos suspended for the Toffees visit, though will be hoping his decision to rest Dusan Tadic in midweek will reinvigorate the Serbian, who now has one assist in eight appearances. Graziano Pelle served a one-match suspension against the Blades but has similarly poor form, whilst a run of five matches without a clean sheet looks very unlikely to be rectified anytime soon.

Stoke

“frisking

After taking four points from their last two, Mark Hughes’ side are in decent form right now. Whether the Potters can maintain their recent revival looks debatable, though – showdowns with Chelsea, Everton, United and Arsenal in the next five Gameweeks suggest otherwise.

Certainly, Stoke’s defence has looked one to avoid for some time anyway – a single shut-out in the last 13 rounds of fixtures should have alarms bells ringing for anyone still holding the likes of Asmir Begovic or Ryan Shawcross. Jon Walters’ run of three goals and as many assists in his last six looks to be severely tested here – all the more so if Bojan fails to shrug off the hip complaint that forced him off at the weekend. Peter Crouch has notched in back-to-back outings since a first-team return but there are plenty of budget options around with far better fixtures.

Also Be Wary Of…

Chelsea
Clearly, Jose Mourinho’s side have the form, the class and the confidence to make a mockery of any fixture list and anyone owning Chelsea players will be more than happy to hold. Nonetheless, with four road trips in the next six (sto, sou, tot, swa), Eden Hazard’s owners will be desperate for a major improvement, bearing in mind the Belgian has just two assists away from Stamford Bridge all season. Last night’s cup opener at Derby will hopefully be a sign of things to come.

Like Hazard, Oscar has also toiled on his travels and earned points only once away from home, though the pair, along with Cesc Fabregas, also welcome West Ham and Newcastle to the Bridge over that period. Diego Costa’s 12 goals in 13 appearances continue to bring in new owners – rested in midweek, he could now be immune to his manager’s talk of festive rotation.

Surprisingly, Chelsea have managed just one away clean sheet in eight attempts but with four shut-outs in their last five in the league, Mourinho’s men have stepped up their resilience as they start to grind out results over the winter period.

Burnley
Sean Dyche’s side face three testing trips (tot, mcy, new) and a home encounter with Liverpool over the next four rounds of fixtures before the schedule smiles a little kinder around the Gameweek 21 mark. Bearing in mind that Burnley have scored more than a single goal on just two occasions so far, Danny Ings’ owners may be thinking twice over holding across the festive period, though three goals and a pair of assists in the previous five highlights his form. Elsewhere, budget favourite George Boyd may struggle for more than two-pointers, whilst a run of two clean sheets in 11 league outings underlines the Clarets’ issues at the back.

Newcastle
The Magpies welcome back Steven Taylor and Moussa Sissoko from suspension just in time for a derby clash with Sunderland this weekend. Alan Pardew’s side have now conceded in each of their last four, though, and the white-hot atmosphere of a Tyne-Wear encounter is always unpredictable at both ends of the pitch. After that, Newcastle face United, Everton and Chelsea in the subsequent four, with only a visit from Burnley providing the calm amidst a Christmas storm. Papiss Cisse showed against Chelsea he’s capable of producing regardless of opponent but with Pardew keen to manage his minutes, it remains to be seen how much pitch time he’ll be afforded over the packed festive period.

  7. Jay_
      11 years, 2 months ago

Evening all , already considering a -4 next week Baines -Siggy > Zaba Eriksen, but it would mean doubling up on City defense and Spurs attack , and losing Siggy before Villa home and Eriksen will have just the 1 plum fixture before 2 hard games , but Baines and a Siggy are becoming annoying and Zaba should get clean sheets and Erik is becoming good form, will monitor Mirralas and my own players fitness but I may well go for it

      1. Rum Ham

Problem with Spurs is their form is so unpredictable. They often flatter to deceive in their "plum fixtures" almost to the stage where a 0-0 draw with Burnley would not be the biggest of surprises. Though there's nothing wrong with Eriksen he could be a player who is frustrating to own for the above reason so I'm reluctant to bring him in.

Eriksen is like a Baines that is 1m dearer without the clean sheet points

Crucially though eriksen is on form unlike Baines.

But like Baines it is a lottery to predict when the big hauls arrive for Eriksen,

True enough and with me already owning Baines (last chance saloon on Boxing Day) I'm not sure I can justify Eriksen too.

Leaning that way, but 8 goals conceded in 2 games doesn't bode well before a passionate derby.

        I have him as VC.
Probably it'll a bit too audacious to give him the armband, which I think I'll be giving to Austin in GW17.

As a long term option instead of Sanchez from Arsenal's attack ?

Tripling up on any team's attack is probably not a sensible choice.
Besides Arsenal barely scores more than two, was rather surprised to see them score 4 times against Newcastle.

I think I'll get rid of Sanchez but I need to be sure that Cazorla's minutes on the long terms first. Any thoughts on that ?

I currently have Komps and he is the only defender I'd go for over Zaba...but he is injured.

If you plan to use the Jan WC early go Demi, if not Zaba.

      Unpopular opinion:

City concedes to each of Palace, WBA and Sunderland unless Kompany returns fully fit ahead of schedule.

They have already conceded goals to Stoke, Hull (w/o Hart), West Ham, QPR (w/o Kompany), Swansea, and Sunderland (w/o Kompany) this season.

They also conceded to Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Spurs though I left those out because they're arguably better teams.

Let's be clear, I think City probably wins out comfortably by a 1-2 goal margin in each game..but a 3-1 is useless to City defense owners unless they chipped in with a cheeky goal/assist.

Kompany is overrated. Lot's of goals City concede is due his poor positioning.

possibly, but City's defensive midfield situation is always shifting so the tactics shift with it and it's tough on a defense.

for example, see United. different back 4 every match makes for confusion in the ranks at the back and constant changes in tactics that then spill over to the offense as well

to add to that... only game chelsea have lost this season is when matic was suspended... the defensive midfield situation is super important...

let's also not forget that even despite that absence, Chelsea have still more or less (or maybe 100% until this past weekend?) had the same back 4 every single PL match this season..that kind of stability is incredibly helpful

You could be right. Which is why, you want to go for their more attacking defenders (Zab or Clichy), if any.

but the thing is it's not the same situation as Baines where he could get a pen or score a free kick at any time (when Mirallas is MIA)..

but I suppose if your heart is set on a City defensive cover, may as well hedge your bets

And you're right. What you get from Baines, you can't get from another Def. But with a City def. you get a higher chance of cleanies. And with Zab or Clichy you get even a higher chance of assists and even goals. Not like Baines, but they are cheaper.. and Clichy is outscoring him at the moment.

Divert alittle, say RVP for example...do u expect him to play all four games over Xmas?

Explains the same for City Def...

I actually do. LVG knows his fitness but wants to play him week in and out. Worst case he gets 60 in a game and LVG adjusts the tactics so RVP doesn't have to cover as much ground.

              could also be ownership bias

week in week out yes but not two games in 3 days?

and u expect Falcao to sit on the bench for the whole of Xmas?

                  Falcao replaces Wilson, not RVP.

LVG will play front 3 of:

                  Falcao - RVP
                  --- Rooney ---

no way...u forgot about ADM :

Rooney is playing the hole, that's his position under LVG. He has never played up top for him except maybe in pre-season. In a diamond when our defense is fit, ADM plays in the LCM position behind Rooney

I think Zaba will play most games from now.. and he is more expensive.

I am going to take a "punt" on Baines to Clichy myself and be ready to transfer him out, if Kolarov gets a start.
But this is mainly to be able to fund Fabs to Hazard next week.

I think it's very much risk (reward) versus steady points. (Mangala is on 4 YC, right?)
