Santi Cazorla bags a goal and assist as Arsenal emerge victorious from the Etihad. Olivier Giroud also finds the net, whilst the Gunners’ defence keep Sergio Aguero at bay with a second successive shut-out. Earlier in the day, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing are amongst the goals as West Ham register a comprehensive win over struggling Hull.

Cazorla Steers Gunners to Victory

The little Spaniard stole the show in yesterday’s stunning win at the Etihad by bagging a goal and assist in the 2-0 triumph. Whilst Alexis Sanchez had a rare off-day, Cazorla’s form continues to suggest he offers a viable double-up option alongside the Chilean in our starting line-ups – he’s now racked up five goals, two assists and 11 bonus points in his last eight appearances. Owned by just 3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, the 8.2-priced playmaker has home clashes against Villa, Leicester and Everton, allied with trips to Palace and QPR in the next six, as the schedule smiles kindly on Arsene Wenger’s side.

Elsewhere in the Gunners attack, Olivier Giroud notched a fourth goal in five appearances to also come into contention ahead of the aforementioned run of fixtures. Also setting us back 8.2, the Frenchman is very much in the differential bracket, too – sitting in just 4% of FPL teams, he’s another who’s sure to come in for increased investment as Wildcards are wielded over the fortnight’s break from league action.

Arsenal Defence on the Up

It’s two clean sheets in as many matches for the north London side after nullifying the threat of Sergio Aguero and co. Given that last week’s home shut-out against Stoke was the Gunners’ first in seven attempts, little was expected from their defenders ahead of the Etihad visit but yesterday’s resilient display is sure to bring their backline onto our radars. With Mathieu Debuchy ruled out for three months, Wenger’s decision to select Hector Bellerin ahead of Calum Chambers at right-back is sure to pique our interest – at 4.4, he could be a real bargain if he can keep ahead of the summer signing, though David Ospina, at 4.8, also looks an option after getting the nod between the posts once again.

City Struggles in Toure’s Absence

With Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero back in the starting XI, much was expected of the champions – over 187,000 FPL managers drafted in the Argentine prior to the weekend deadline but his owners picked up no more than a single point, after he earned a late yellow card. Bearing in mind that City now travel to Stamford Bridge when league action resumes in two weeks’ time, the bandwagon may be temporarily slowed down until Gameweek 24. From that point on, Manuel Pellegrini’s troops host Hull, Newcastle and Leicester and also travel to Stoke and Burnley – by then, Aguero’s match sharpness will be fully up to speed and few will be willing to go without over such an enticing stretch of fixtures.

The champions have now failed to win any of their four league matches without Yaya Toure this season. Worryingly for Pellegrini, if the midfielder and new Etihad team-mate Wilfried Bony reach the Africa Cup of Nations final on February 8, they would likely miss the next three league matches, given that the Gameweek 25 trip to Stoke is on February 11.

Carroll and Downing Deliver

Sam Allardyce started with a 4-2-3-1 for yesterday’s clash against Hull, with Andy Carroll leading the line and Stewart Downing tucked in behind. A half-time switch to a midfield diamond saw the pair grab a goal apiece in an easy 3-0 win over the struggling Tigers – Carroll now has five strikes in his last eight, whilst Downing’s efforts took his tally to three goals and a pair of assists over the same period. Downing has now climbed into fourth spot in the FPL midfield standings on 116 points. but with showdowns against Liverpool, United, Southampton, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal in the next seven Gameweeks, it remains to be seen how many of his 26% owners will keep the faith.

Tigers Toil Again

West Ham went into yesterday’s encounter with just a single clean sheet in the previous eight. With both their main forwards sidelined through injury, though, Hull were unable to take advantage of their hosts’ poor defensive form and drew yet another blank – alarmingly for Steve Bruce, his side have now failed to score in six of the last eight Gameweeks. Still stuck in the drop zone, Hull now have three vital home encounters (NEW, AVL, QPR) against sides in the bottom half of the table to boost their survival plight. Sone Aluko – classified as a midfielder in FPL and priced at 4.6 – led the line at Upton Park after recovering from a calf complaint and could offer Fantasy managers an out-of-position prospect, for those who believe Bruce’s side can profit from those upcoming matches.

Hmmm thinking about doing Silva > Cazorla. Already have Aguero. Completeing my Midfield is Haz, Sanchez, Boyd & Colback. Getting Cazorla in lets me upgrade Colback or Boyd to Elia or Puncheon.

Safety score in Last Man Standing is 28 or 29.
Very few autosubs in the bottom 60.
Players left there are Foster 15, Wisdom 16, Baines 15 & Berahino 1.

People here jump the gun way too fast. One week cazorla did well and everyone thinks he is awesome. No I don't think so. Before this game he did nothing last few game weeks. But within the same period Sanchez scored twice and provided assist against stoke and the other game he had 1 goal 1 assist. A better option must be Eriksen for a similar price.

Team for this week. Looking for a 1 week transfer before I WC:

    Panti
    Zaba Baines Wisdom
    ADM Hazard Sanchez Downing
    Austin Costa Kane

    Bench Boyd Hutton BDavies

I have £3.5m in the bank so plenty of options. Which is best:

A BDavies to Kos (bench Wisdom or Zaba)
    B Downing to Caz
    C Austin to Giroud
    D other suggestions

Do you think a Chelsea defender is worth it over any of the attacking trio? I bought Fab at 9 so am reluctant to sell and both Haz/Costa have higher points potential.

It is a tricky one as all three could score really well. I just think it gives you a better balance in the team by downgrading one of the mids. Could get a Chelsea def and upgrade to a playing 2nd keeper.

The lack of Silva gives you flexibility in defence and upfront. I think I need to assess which of the big hitters isnt "essential". Maybe it is Silva out of the main ones.

Everyone else in my league has already dropped him and I got 11 pts from him last night. U can drop him sure, but who has better value than him for the price u got him at? Arguably only puncheon or Elia but what happens when jedinak bolasie comes back and Southampton MF come back from injury?

Even the very best or luckiest in the league occasionally need to make changes - especially with ACON. Personally I'd prefer a limited WC - "3 in 3 out" maybe, but I think it adds more people to the competition who might have quit at this stage with, say, 100pts to their ML rival.

Would you WC this lot now or wait another week?

    Lloris, Elliot
    Baines, Terry, Chambers, Wisdom, Hutton
    Sanchez, Hazard, Silva, Eriksen, Downing
    Costa, Kane, Austin

    Bank 0.0m, 1 FT, 2 WC

Def wait a week, team looks good plus you can have some fun and take a 1 week punt!

You'll prob lose cash on Chambers/Silva/Austin(maybe) this week.. and you might have to pay a premium for Puncheon/Caz etc if you want em.. that's the only reason to play it really. if you dont care about that it's better to wait.. more information is always good

Safely in top 5k but want am considering a "different" wildcard. Madness?

    Pants/Krul
    Terry/Clyne/Rose/Jones/PVA
    Cazorla/Fabregas/Oscar/Silva/Marney
    Kane/Giroud/Aguero

    I get 2 x Man City, 3 x Chelsea, 2 x Arsenal. Strong front 7 and good defence.

BUT the housewives favourite of Costa, Hazard and Sanchez arent here.

    Interested in opinions.

I think that Costa and Aguero is going to be the key (despite what Doos says). I think you can get away with small gains when one or both of them don't fire (and next GW might be a prime example of this) - but this will be offset by the major falls when they both score well (and they will) because of their ownership alone. I went down the Terry/Hazard/Fabregas path (similar to yours) which does offer some insurance - but I'm not sure now whether that will be the correct choice.

Its at this point in the season where I usual do this and screw up. I have been keeping close to ownerships this season and it has got me as high as I have ever been. I just feel the urge to do something different but I may just be selective as to how I do it as opposed to a wholesale change. Cheers.

I like it....but too much cash in the defence for me. Would try and get one of Haz/Sanchez in there by downgrading one or two of the defenders

Im currently on a similar squad with a big defence, but with the housewives favourites.

I think you've got an entire midfield of second best. You'd be better off with the premium options and a budget mid instead of silva, caz and oscar. Jones and Rose also seem expensive to be fighting over one place

That's what I thought. Im currently on
          Terry, Fonte, Kosc, Wisdom, Gimp

May change though depending on if I go for Ospina

Interesting. I like it in a way. Depends on your rank as ownership could hurt you. I am looking at was to triple on Arsenal and Chelsea!

      Thoughts above?

      Don't do it to yourself.

Not owning Costa this week for example has killed my rank. 10k~ to 18,5k~ so far.

You can probably get away with not owning one of Hazard/Costa but I wouldn't like to not own Sanchez!

Will Dummet get dropped for Newcastle? Selling value is 4.1M for me so I think I may keep him.

"QPR´s away form is awful" has been an accepted truth on here this season, but remember that they have already played 6 of the top 7 away whereas they have played all of the other bottom 7 teams at home so far. I would argue that any team with a fixture list like that in the first half of the season would look strong at home and awful away.

The key question, however, is now whether this will translate into them being strong away and awful at home in the second half of the season. I have already sold Austin, so that´s where I stand.

if Tottenham go through the C1C i'm defo selling Austin(missing GW 27) .. else there is a case to keep QPR assets i agree

Looks to me like their home form is getting closer to their away form, rather than the other way around. 0-0 v a poor Palace at the time, followed by 1-1 with 10 men Swansea, and the United loss all at home, while they're now losing to Burnley away too.

I think QPR are doomed. However, Austin has the ability and chances to score in every game so I still think he's worth it.

Costa picking up form and those fixtures are easy, so i would go with him over Oscar for the 3 man Che. get Puncheon instead, or Elia. In rest it looks solid
