Andy Carroll is expected to miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Alexis Sanchez is uncertain to feature for Arsenal’s showdown with Middlesbrough. Robin van Persie is a doubt for United, Jon Walters could return for Stoke, whilst Mile Jedinak is likely to miss out again for Palace.

Arsene Wenger has admitted Alexis Sanchez remains a doubt for Sunday’s clash with Middlesbrough due to the knee injury sustained against Leicester on Tuesday. The Gunners boss had some positive news, though, revealing Aaron Ramsey will only miss the next two weeks with a hamstring problem, whilst Jack Wilshere is back in normal training.

Yaya Sanogo remains a doubt for Palace’s clash with Liverpool due to a hamstring problem, whilst James McArthur is struggling to overcome a thigh injury. The Eagles have new left-back Pape Souare available for selection, after the Senegal international finally received a work permit. Skipper Mile Jedinak is likely to miss out again with a knee problem.

Matthew Upson has returned to training for Leicester after recovering from the knock picked up against Arsenal on Tuesday. Robert Huth is cup-tied for the Foxes, whilst Chris Wood misses up despite stepping up his recovery from a minor ankle injury.

Robin van Persie is a doubt for United’s clash with Preston on Monday, whilst Daley Blind and Phil Jones remain uncertain to feature after both were forced off against Burnley in midweek. Speaking to MUTV, Louis van Gaal conceded:

“I don’t know. We have to wait and see. I don’t think it’s a heavy injury for Jones. With Blind, I say what the doctor has said – we’ll wait and see. I think he shall play on Monday – that’s my expectation, but you never know.”

Reports in the Newcastle press suggest the Cheick Tiote could be ruled out for up to ten weeks with the knee injury sustained whilst playing for Senegal in the African Cup of Nations.

Mark Hughes rolled out an injury update ahead of Stoke’s clash with Blackburn, with the Potters boss optimistic on Jon Walters’ chances of recovering from a knee problem:

“Jon Walters is the only one who realistically looks like he could be okay. We left him out on Wednesday with the sole purpose of hopefully having him available on Saturday. He has a little problem which we have got to manage correctly, and that is what we have been doing with him. He hasn’t trained this week, but we will see how he is today. Erik Pieters has trained this week, but again he has been out for a month so we have to decide what we feel is best for him as we don’t want to compromise him. The likes of Ryan [Shawcross], Marc [Wilson] and Stephen Ireland could all return for Aston Villa next weekend.”

Jack Rodwell is available for Sunderland’s trip to Bradford, though Anthony Reveillere is a major doubt due to a hamstring problem. Fellow defender Billy Jones has recovered from a similar complaint, whilst Emmanuele Giaccherini misses out due to illness. Lee Cattermole and Will Buckley are still sidelined due to knee injuries.

Baggies new boy Callum McManaman is a doubt for the cup clash against West Ham. Skipper Darren Fletcher is cup-tied, whilst Victor Anichebe continues to struggle with a groin problem.

Big Sam’s side look likely to be without Andy Carroll for the remainder of the season – the forward is set to undergo surgery on knee ligament damage on Tuesday, West Ham have confirmed. The Hammers have successfully appealed Adrian’s midweek dismissal against Southampton and the stopper is available for selection with immediate effect, whilst Allardyce also welcomes back Mark Noble and Kevin Nolan, after both missed out against the Saints in midweek.

Have you still got your WC? If so then it's fine. If not it's good to have cheapies just incase you need to bring in any more heavy hitters any any point.

Never thought that Randy Lerner could make a worse managerial appointment for Villa than Alex McLeish, but Tim Sherwood? Jesus wept.

Really angry as a Villa fan, but relieved that I'm no longer a season ticket holder.

Under McLeish, Villa used to lose 1-0.

Under Sherwood, we'll lose 3-1 and will have to watch a beaming manager waiting on the touchline to salute the Villa goalscorer.

Sherwood had the best winning record of all the recent spurs managers. Hes a dooshbag and sucks against the better teams where tactics are more important, but he should keep villa safe this season and maybe finish near the top half

I'm a Villa fan, so I hope you're right, don't get me wrong. But I just don;t know how anyone can say with any real certainty how good a manager is after such a short amount of time. Every manager can go on a good run of games in a short period. As a manager he's yet to be tested with time, but when it comes to his personality he seems to me to have the kind of personality that can lose a dressing room and get no respect. Plus he's a chav.

Not necessarily. If you look at the players, there is talent there. I'm not saying it is a top of the table quality, but certainly it could be a mid table quality, and if the manager can't get that, or actually absolutely anything out of those players, then it was a sensible move to fire him. Whether Sherwood is the right answer to their problems, is another question. I doubt he is.

Yeah I'm being harsh but Villa don't have that much to work with. Sherwood did alright at Spurs simply by giving attacking freedom to the players, which works to an extent when most of the opposition is inferior. He won't have anything close to the talent he had at Spurs.

Sure it's nothing like he had at Spurs, but Benteke, Weimann and Agbonlahor form a strong attacking trio, then there's the "second only to God" N'Zogbia, and a lot of talent in defence. Villa is not a great team, but it is not crap either. It has seriously underperfomed for a long time, I don't know why. We'll see if Sherwood can figure that out and turn the tendency, but I strongly doubt that. To me he seems clueless.

Is the defence really that good? Hutton aside of course 😉

Agree on Sherwood, he'll certainly make it more entertaining though.

I'm not saying it's great, but it is no relegation material either. maybe I'm overrating the defence, maybe the weak defence is the reason to the overly defensive team play that eats their attacking potential. It would make sense. But it doesn't seem to me to be the case. To my mind the likes of Cissokho, Vlaar, Clark and Hutton could all do a decent job in a defence line of a moderately attacking team. Some of them are proven to be able to do that (Cissokho and Vlaar) and I don't really doubt the others either.

I see that "a lot of talent in defence" may have given you the wrong idea 😆

I take that back. Let me rephrase it: "a moderate amount of talent in defence".

Not a fan of statistics, but the loss percentage of Spurs managers in the last 20 years (not including Clive Allen and Chris Hughton as caretaker spells) is as follows:

            1. David Pleat – 44.7% (all 3 spells combined)
            2. Glenn Hoddle – 43.2%
            3. Christian Gross – 40%
            4. Tim Sherwood – 35.7%
            5. George Graham 32.5%
            6. Gerry Francis – 31.7%
            7. Juande Ramos – 31.5%
            8. Jacques Santini – 30.1%
            9. Martin Jol – 29.1%
            10. Harry Redknapp – 25.2%
            11. Mauricio Pochettino - 24.3%
            12. André Villas-Boas – 20%

Yeah, but there was a visible luck factor there. Quite simply, Spurs produced less good quality chances during Sherwood's era than during AVB's era, but converted them with an unsustainable rate. In a longer run, with same game, that winning percentage would have dropped like a stone.

I am not saying that AVB was great either, though.
