We dissect Arsenal’s victory over Manchester United in this morning’s Scribbles, as the Gunners continue their impressive form away from home. Meanwhile, Angel Di Maria ruins a fine performance with a bizarre show of dissent, and Wayne Rooney strengthens his hold on a striker berth.

Arsenal into the last four

Arsenal’s 2-1 triumph over Manchester United in their FA Cup quarter-final tie marked the first time since 2006 that the Gunners have emerged victorious at Old Trafford. Danny Welbeck came back to haunt his erstwhile employers following a £16 million summer switch to the Emirates, latching onto an under-hit backpass from Antonio Valencia and rounding the keeper to score. Nacho Monreal provided the North London club’s opener, slotting past an onrushing David de Gea after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain outfoxed several Red Devils defenders with his sinuous dribbling.

The Gunners’ victory serves to further illustrate how dominant Arsene Wenger’s men have been on the road in the last few months. Since 18 January, Arsenal have played in six away fixtures, winning all but their duel with arch rivals Tottenham at White Hart Lane. With three favourable match-ups (new, bur, hull) in their remaining road ties, it’s not beyond Arsenal to extend that run into May.

Wenger elected to shuffle the pack ahead of a home tie against West Ham on the weekend. Danny Welbeck was handed a start in the lone striker role in place of the rested Olivier Giroud, and Oxlade-Chamberlain lined up on the right flank in Wenger’s 4-2-3-1, with Tomas Rosicky dropping to the bench. Monreal, Wojciech Szczesny and Laurent Koscielny were recalled to Arsenal’s defence.

Despite only recently returning from a groin injury, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s problems continued last night after he was forced off on 50 minutes with a hamstring problem. Another stint on the sidelines would certainly boost the prospects of Welbeck or Theo Walcott on the right, with Olivier Giroud expected to return against the Hammers this weekend.

After the match, Arsene Wenger explained his decision to hand Welbeck a rare role through the middle:

“He has pace and you also have to consider it psychologically. I have to rotate a little bit without destroying the balance of the team and I felt that we could have counter-attacking chances tonight and he would be ideal for that. Overall he had a great game. We all want to do well when we play against our former club to show that we are a great player but it’s not easy to deal with the mental situation. He focused just on his game and didn’t do anything special, he just played football like you want him to play. He has shown mental strength because that’s not always easy to deal with.”

Impact of Arsenal win on fixtures

As discussed on the site yesterday, Arsenal’s passage into the last four of the FA Cup means their Gameweek 33 home clash against Sunderland – which falls on the weekend of the semi-finals – will likely be rescheduled for midweek of the following Gameweek. In that eventuality, the Gunners would be tasked with back-to-back encounters at the Emirates since they’re already hosting Chelsea on the Sunday. Conversely, the Blacks Cats now face the prospect of two road matches in quick succession, with Gus Poyet’s side already scheduled to travel to Stoke City that Gameweek.

With Aston Villa and Liverpool (if they win their replay) also facing potential blanks on Gameweek 33 and doubles on Gameweek 34 – alongside their Gameweek 33 opponents QPR and Hull City – the final stages of the 2014/15 Fantasy Premier League campaign are shaping to be a real test of our managerial expertise.

Di Maria: the good, the bad and the ugly

Angel Di Maria arguably had his brightest match in a United strip for several weeks before being sent off in the most undignified of fashions in the 77th minute. If getting booking for simulation wasn’t humbling enough for the Argentina international, Di Maria proceeded to vent his frustration by pulling at the back of referee Michael Oliver’s jersey, earning a swift second yellow for the flagrant display of disrespect. Di Maria’s one-match suspension means he’ll miss United’s home clash against fellow Champions League hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday.

Di Maria’s 12.6% ownership likely lamented the winger’s moment of madness, given how promising his output had been up until that point. The former Real Madrid star teed up Wayne Rooney for the hosts only goal, delivering an inch-perfect curling cross from the right wing for the United striker to head home. Furthermore, Di Maria executed more key passes (three) than any other player on the pitch, despite not lasting the full 90 minutes.

Louis van Gaal made only one change to the XI that bested Newcastle last time out, calling up left-back Luke Shaw so Marcos Rojo could shift over and cover for suspended centre-back Jonny Evans, though Shaw was replaced at the break as his hamstring problems continue. Rooney spearheaded United’s attack once again and strengthened his claim for a position in our squads, notching his third goal in as many starts. That being said, a brutal fun of fixtures in the next six (TOT, liv, AVL, MCI, che, eve) doesn’t encourage investment in the 10.6-priced forward.

Which Crystal Palace player to own?

Puncheon looks the best at the moment but Bolasie and Zaha look very good on the pitch. Bolasie was involved in every dangerous attack from Crystal Palace against Saints.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

This was something that was brought up on last night's live Scoutcast in which we revisited fourth midfield options. these are players that are not heavy hitters with a price tag over 9m or bench fodder.

We asked current world FPL number one Simon March who would be a good player for that role - who is often a key differential to your rivals teams. He suggested Sigurdsson or Eriksen.

Who is your top pick for the 'fourth midfielder' role and why?

I have Caz at the moment, not keen on Eriksen and still not sure on Siggy.

Thinking Henderson looks a good pick.

If you can consider Eriksen a 4th midfielder then I say Sterling.

Eriksen because of the set pieces. More so than Siggy as Spurs are a better team. They also have Kane whereas Bony is a big loss to Swansea. I can see them struggling now. I'd also say Mane in his current position.

I think 90% of Eriksen's goals come from free kicks near penalty area. He doesn't score from "live game" often and his assist stats are poor. He also doesn't have corner monopol unlike Siggy 🙂

Unless you have a high team value or will rely on Berahino/Austin over Costa/Sturidge I think the 4th midfielder has to be Siggy or Puncheon.

I would go with Henderson in a few weeks after their fixtures improve.

        Also Downing as well.

Siggy, Downing demonstrated consistency over the season

        Henderson, Puncheon in good form

All are the key midfielders for their respective teams.

Coutinho, Downing or Sigurdsson imo. Not many options available in 7-9m price range, so Eriksen is my pick for 3rd slot, not 4th.

Eriksen has both goal threat and assist potential and takes free kicks and corners. Hard to look past if you can afford over 8m for a 4th midfield. So he is my choice.

Sterling was a great option but new role dramatically reduces his appeal. Caz ok option but has been lucky for his points.

Going cheaper I like mane directness though siggy could come good again. I feel downing is on the decline.

Players like puncheon and even Moses offer good value but too late in the season to need such value with more money to spread around

      My current team is:

      Foster, panty
      Terry, kosc, clyne, pva, rose
      Haz, sanchez, eriksen, puncheon, boyd
      Austin, aguero, kane

He's still played 25 games this season, and he could barely put one foot in front of the other. It was an absolute doddle for Barca, they scored 6 but it could easily have been double digits, but Pedro looked well out of his depth. With the double gameweek for Chelsea on the horizon, it seems to be a no brainer to stock up on Blues players. Hazard is a given, and general consensus appears to be that the remaining Chelsea slots should be taken by two of Costa, Terry and Ivan. But has anyone thought about Courtois?

    Pros
Clean Sheets - arguably the league's best keeper playing for inarguably the league's best defence, Courtois promises clean sheets. As the season draws to a close and Mourinho closes in on another title, their defence just seems to get tighter
Price - Priced at 5.9m (and possibly due to drop), Courtois is one of the cheapest routes in to their defence. By comparison, Terry and Ivanovic cost 0.8m and 1.6m more respectively
(Relative) Differential - With 8.2% ownership he's not a true differential, but next to Ivan (27%) and Terry (18.9%) he does offer something different. He's also someone I don't hear mentioned too often on here, so I suspect that a large number of his owners are actually dead teams or casuals, and so he could be a surprise weapon for those teams chasing the top positions

    Cons
Rotation risk - with Cech waiting in the wings, Courtois is of course susceptible to rotation and that is a concern. That being said, he has started 24 out of 28 league games so far this season, and should they stay in the Champions League, Mourinho may entrust Cech with European duties instead.
Attacking points/bonus points - One of the beauties of the Chelsea defence is their ability to combine solidity with attacking flair, with Ivan in particular having an incredible season. Clearly Courtois is no Chilavert and he has yet to pick up a single bonus point too. What he lacks here, however, he offsets slightly by save points, managing at least 3 saves in 14 out of the 27 games in which he's completed 90 minutes.

I've currently got Foster and Panti as a rotating pair and I admit that they have served me well so far. However, their fixtures don't look quite as pretty post week 32, and West Brom's run-in in particular looks horrendous. Unless you guys can convince me otherwise, I'm thinking Courtois might be an interesting choice...

He's not totally nailed (maybe only 90%) but more important Terry and Ivan offer such great attacking threat that they are worth the slightly extra dosh.

Waste of a Chelsea spot, Chech could easily play one of the dw games and is a chel keeper ever gonna get more than 7 or 8 pts

Expensive keepers are just not worth it.

Panti might get a lot less clean sheets, but for 1.5m cheaper he can concede 2 or 3 goals and still come away with 4 points due to save points.

Chadli + £ in the bank for a defensive upgrade to Ivan is my likely path if this is the case. Exit strategy for you?

I have a terrible defence, and I have Sanchez, Silva and Hazard alongside Erik - so I'm thinking Downing / Puncheon to improve my defence.

That said, Chadli will become a great option if he plays every week.

Good point on Mane above. I dropped him last week for Eriksen, owned him for a couple of blanks. I'm points dodging, no doubt I'll do the same when I rid myself of Eriksen.

In general play he seems more involved. Eriksen seems to cut in less with Chadli being an option to pass to through the middle. Worth keeping an eye on for now is all.

I've a Wc and not sure how to use it, gw34 to play it seems the concensus now,

          3 Chelsea & 4 bench players with a double = 7.
          7 + 2 free transfers = 9.

It's not too bad, but a WC enables 10+Aggy or 11 of the best DGWers in GW34 for no hits and also no need to be forced into unwanted transfers before then.

            • 15 Years

Or you could have 9 then WC the ones you don't want out. I thought you'd want a different team from most for the last 3-4 weeks.

Then again, that makes your transfers for the next few weeks very template which you might want to avoid.

An option, although CHE, LIV and ARS (and even LEI) all have decent fixtures post the DGW.

10 of the best DGWers + Aggy for the DGW for me.

Agreed. I had my eye on him too. I still have the WC in my pocket so will just get the best team after gw33 starts.

I assume this is for fpl and not Sky? As transfers could deal with that. Do you know if you can work out average transfers left in sky? I've got 15 but about 3k, so not in the dizzy heights of you but still plugging along.

No unfortunately not which is a shame, safe to say though from my experience that you have more than the vast majority there.

I would say most players still in with a chance have a minimum of 8.

Average in top 1k i would say was also around that number, althogh you never know who has spanked there load to get there in the first place and will now tail off. Could be many people with 0....

Lovely spring morning. Few questions for you:

    A) will caz play further forward this gw now ox is injured? Got him and Sanchez - considering Silva in for caz

    B) are people really captaining Kane over kun?

    C) play clyne or rose?

    1. Wilshere Knowledge
      • 12 Years
      10 years, 10 months ago

      A) Maybe. If Ramsey plays in midfield, Caz will be more advanced, but Welbeck or Theo could just replace Ox on the wing, leaving Caz deep still.

      B) Some.

      C) 50/50. Bad defence v bad attack or good defence v good attack. I'd say Clyne.

      1. Dont think so. Its because of Ozil he is playing deep.
      2. Dont think so. Majority are going with Kun.
      3. Clyne.

When it comes to GW34, I'm convinced many on WC will be trying to pick 3 of Aguero-Sturridge-Costa-Kane-Giroud

No doubt Giroud will be a popular pick given his relatively budget friendly price. Kane seems a no-brainer as his budget price + big hitter scoring (assuming most got him early) enables an extra big hitter in midfield or defense.

That leaves the premium striker spot.

Seems foolish to even ask this question...would you pick Sturridge/Costa as your premium striker over Aguero if wildcarding in GW34? Or is Aguero indispensable?

I might ditch Aguero for Sturridge. He's always a good option, but his price does reflect that.

Looking at that potential Liverpool double and an attacker seems like a no brainer despite 2 away games. I'd like my midfield to be Chelsea+Arsenal, that leaves really only the striker position available.

Definitely considering it. And I feel it will be a crucial decision many will be weighing up come GW34.

I think it's deffo high risk, but it depends on how you want to play. Whether you want to stay where you are, and take a chance for one last push.

My target was always top 1k this season, so I'll need to do something special to get up there.

Kun-Austin-Kane* for me. If I have extra FT left, then probably another DGW forward.

You probably have a quartet of big hitters in midfield in mind then? Double Che def as well.

          Something like:
          Ivan, Terry, Schlupp/Skrtel/Moreno
          Hazard, Ozil, Coutinho
          Austin
Looking at my current team set-up, Costa/Sturridge for Rooney is an option but then I cant get Ivan/Terry or any other DGWer. So Rooney to Sakho to Austin will be move by next week allowing Ivan-Terry at back and a good 5th mid.

Probably one of the last, great chances to take cover big gaps for those on WC though. I think it's worth considering and not just brushing off.

Personally would never consider him over the possible options we have at the moment - Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool mids. Could easily fit 4 of them in and still have space for a strong front 3.

The two 'best' strikers in the game have a single game week. To punt or not to punt, that is the question...... Aguero -> Sturridge/Costa? Kane->Austin?

How many points would you say having the late WC in tact is worth?

Very difficult to quantify, but I'd say being able to get 2-3 more DGWers in for free and not having to bench lots of big boys in GW33 (i.e. start ubers) or make unwanted transfers between now and GW34 just for the sake of getting DGWers, has me arrive at a figure of 20 points.

    Discuss.

I'd venture to say 30-40 points in fact, assuming WC is used during GW34.

Primarily because GW34 WCers would be able to have an arguably stronger GW33 team compared to non wildcarders.

If played in GW34, the wildcard's value will be determined by 33+34. Imo.

Probably the former, if Liverpool gets confirmed for a double in GW34.

These are some big teams in that double (Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal) who will likely still have something to play for in the last 4 GWs. Will have no problems overweighting my squad on those teams post DGW.

OK, thanks for this. I've still held on to mine, miles ahead in cash ML, but 51 behind in a ML which I really want to win. 13th and only 1 ahead of me has WC still available.

tbh most will have the same number of big hitters and get similarly high points..so ur WC team is likely to earn similar points as the rest. so what stand out is the number of hits people take to get the similar number of DGW big hitters that is likely to earn u grounds.

depends on how the players in the blank week perform too. last season gw28 there are no standout performer scoring on that week..so there are not much difference..maybe u get to play 1-2 more players than the rest thats it.

would say around 20pts now..if u purposely take hits to perserve a WC and thinking that will earn u back all the lost ground i would say not very worthy. U have to use it when u need it.

So with Liverpool's replay not until April, the tactic is the begin loading up Arsenal and Chelsea players (if you don't have already), and then wait for more news re: who plays DGW?

    1. Holmes
      • 12 Years

Chelsea, yes. For Arsenal, I guess 1-2 is fine plus depends on other BGWer in your team. A solid XI for both, GW33 and GW34 would be brilliant.

haha every dgw comes with a blank..and ultimately they still add up to the same number of games. Whats the point of stocking up these players for a blank week so that u would have them for dgw?

Chelsea don't have a blank week, so if your 'stock' only includes 3 blanks, then you are ahead of the curve.
