We dissect Arsenal’s victory over Manchester United in this morning’s Scribbles, as the Gunners continue their impressive form away from home. Meanwhile, Angel Di Maria ruins a fine performance with a bizarre show of dissent, and Wayne Rooney strengthens his hold on a striker berth.

Arsenal into the last four

Arsenal’s 2-1 triumph over Manchester United in their FA Cup quarter-final tie marked the first time since 2006 that the Gunners have emerged victorious at Old Trafford. Danny Welbeck came back to haunt his erstwhile employers following a £16 million summer switch to the Emirates, latching onto an under-hit backpass from Antonio Valencia and rounding the keeper to score. Nacho Monreal provided the North London club’s opener, slotting past an onrushing David de Gea after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain outfoxed several Red Devils defenders with his sinuous dribbling.

The Gunners’ victory serves to further illustrate how dominant Arsene Wenger’s men have been on the road in the last few months. Since 18 January, Arsenal have played in six away fixtures, winning all but their duel with arch rivals Tottenham at White Hart Lane. With three favourable match-ups (new, bur, hull) in their remaining road ties, it’s not beyond Arsenal to extend that run into May.

Wenger elected to shuffle the pack ahead of a home tie against West Ham on the weekend. Danny Welbeck was handed a start in the lone striker role in place of the rested Olivier Giroud, and Oxlade-Chamberlain lined up on the right flank in Wenger’s 4-2-3-1, with Tomas Rosicky dropping to the bench. Monreal, Wojciech Szczesny and Laurent Koscielny were recalled to Arsenal’s defence.

Despite only recently returning from a groin injury, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s problems continued last night after he was forced off on 50 minutes with a hamstring problem. Another stint on the sidelines would certainly boost the prospects of Welbeck or Theo Walcott on the right, with Olivier Giroud expected to return against the Hammers this weekend.

After the match, Arsene Wenger explained his decision to hand Welbeck a rare role through the middle:

“He has pace and you also have to consider it psychologically. I have to rotate a little bit without destroying the balance of the team and I felt that we could have counter-attacking chances tonight and he would be ideal for that. Overall he had a great game. We all want to do well when we play against our former club to show that we are a great player but it’s not easy to deal with the mental situation. He focused just on his game and didn’t do anything special, he just played football like you want him to play. He has shown mental strength because that’s not always easy to deal with.”

Impact of Arsenal win on fixtures

As discussed on the site yesterday, Arsenal’s passage into the last four of the FA Cup means their Gameweek 33 home clash against Sunderland – which falls on the weekend of the semi-finals – will likely be rescheduled for midweek of the following Gameweek. In that eventuality, the Gunners would be tasked with back-to-back encounters at the Emirates since they’re already hosting Chelsea on the Sunday. Conversely, the Blacks Cats now face the prospect of two road matches in quick succession, with Gus Poyet’s side already scheduled to travel to Stoke City that Gameweek.

With Aston Villa and Liverpool (if they win their replay) also facing potential blanks on Gameweek 33 and doubles on Gameweek 34 – alongside their Gameweek 33 opponents QPR and Hull City – the final stages of the 2014/15 Fantasy Premier League campaign are shaping to be a real test of our managerial expertise.

Di Maria: the good, the bad and the ugly

Angel Di Maria arguably had his brightest match in a United strip for several weeks before being sent off in the most undignified of fashions in the 77th minute. If getting booking for simulation wasn’t humbling enough for the Argentina international, Di Maria proceeded to vent his frustration by pulling at the back of referee Michael Oliver’s jersey, earning a swift second yellow for the flagrant display of disrespect. Di Maria’s one-match suspension means he’ll miss United’s home clash against fellow Champions League hopefuls Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday.

Di Maria’s 12.6% ownership likely lamented the winger’s moment of madness, given how promising his output had been up until that point. The former Real Madrid star teed up Wayne Rooney for the hosts only goal, delivering an inch-perfect curling cross from the right wing for the United striker to head home. Furthermore, Di Maria executed more key passes (three) than any other player on the pitch, despite not lasting the full 90 minutes.

Louis van Gaal made only one change to the XI that bested Newcastle last time out, calling up left-back Luke Shaw so Marcos Rojo could shift over and cover for suspended centre-back Jonny Evans, though Shaw was replaced at the break as his hamstring problems continue. Rooney spearheaded United’s attack once again and strengthened his claim for a position in our squads, notching his third goal in as many starts. That being said, a brutal fun of fixtures in the next six (TOT, liv, AVL, MCI, che, eve) doesn’t encourage investment in the 10.6-priced forward.

I was unsure until the last 24 hours. It looks like I wildcard before week 34 to get 11 DGW's or 10 + Aguero.

It means we can go strong for 33, and hopefully shoot ahead of the people who wildcarded early

Taken an off this season. Kinda off footy except for United this season. Playing fantasy cricket though and in the top 10 of the FFS league and 170th in the world.

        What about you?

          Oh nice!

It's a bit meh at the moment. Too many punts didn't work this season. RVP was my most captained player up until a couple of weeks ago... so yeah...

But confident with Sturridge(C) this week 🙂

Just reading the talk about Messi possibly leaving Barcelona someday, if the right price is paid. Is he really worth €220 million? Realistically, you could buy 3 or 4 of the very best players going with that money instead.

He might just be the best player ever and everyone is 60mil these days, so a couple of those 3 or 4 players could turn out to be like Falcao and Di Maria.

I was more thinking you could get Pogba (around 70), Hazard (around 100) and another for 50 million.

Or you could chop and change, Pogba + 3 others. Lots of options. Also, I might add that ADM is a brilliant player, we all know this and have seen it before. A bad spell doesn't negate his previous accomplishments. Falcao, well that was an ACL tear and some players sadly don't come back from that the same (my concern is the exact same thing has happened to Walcott).

United were pretty good in the first half, best I've seen them. 2nd half a shambles for both sides should be the other way round.

They were the better team until Herrera went off, second half Arsenal took over but didn't really dominate as such. All throughout United looked like defensively they would make a calamitous mistake which is how they look in every match. They'll score against Spurs at home but unless De gea performs miracles they will also concede

I didn't watch, but the reports I've read (not based on the opinions on here) suggested that they were pretty decent in the first half but then it all went to pot. (LVG, for some reason, made a double sub at the break.)

Coutinho's currently their best player. And they may not, he will start some games but Rodgers himself has said he has to manage his injury problems with Sturridge very carefully. They've shown they can win games without him as well, so they don't necessarily have to start him each game.

To be honest Giggs, I have no clue. There have been games I was sure he'd start that he didn't, so I'm not really on the same wavelength as BR at all.

I guess my thinking was more based on actual injury risk. They play Swansea, then United and Arsenal. Those two games following the Swansea match could have a massive impact on the CL places. So I just wonder if BR is going to see Swans as a game they don't HAVE to give him a full 90 in, to prevent the risk of injury. But as I say, I genuinely am out of the loop.

Pants, Bellerin, Sahko, Sanchez, Sterling, Giroud and Austin for GW33?

I'm just going with Ivan, Tez, Haz, Sanch, Giroud, Kos. Then use my 2 FT's for maybe Austin and punt.

Isn't there a risk of Liverpool game not being re-scheduled for gw34 so soon after a replay and that is if they even win that game. Rodgers did say that the league takes priority over the cup now

      Panti
      Kos Bert Azpi
      SIlva Haz Eriksen Mane
      Kane Aguero Rooney
      Bench: Krul Stones Vergini Phillips

Am thinking of switching eriksen and rooney for Sanchez and berahino/austin. Good move? Or save for next week? Have 1 FT, also how crucial is having liverpool cover? Cheers guys!

I have a mental strategy due to budgets.

This week I do Clyne to Terry

      Next week Hutton to Alderweireld

I know it seems a bit 'roundabout', but makes sense..right ?

I'd be more inclined to get rid of Sturridge because I think Giroud is a better option, and I think Sterling will start up front with Sturridge being rested at times. Alternatively Eriksen has some tasty fixtures after United so Sterling could go

Am I right in thinking that without wildcard it's possible to have 10 DGW players in GW34 whilst still fielding 11 in GW33 and only taking a 4 point hit?

All depends which players you already own too I guess....Thinking is:

3 Chelsea players can play. 4 DGW players on the bench. 2 transfers saved = 3 transfers for 4 points to bring in another 3.

Obviously injuries will tear this theory apart but it's not far off right?

It works, but which 7DGW players do you want, is the question?

            - 3 x Arsenal
            - Austin

            Then what?

Villa are away at City, so I won't bother with theirs.

Haven't thought that far through but I love a double game week!

After this week I will already have Pantilimon, Bellerin, Ivanovic, Hazard, Austin, Sanchez. So I already have 6 (potentially) with no further transfers.

After that I'll decide on which Liverpool players I want and whether I want Costa or Terry.

Blackburn could still win yet 🙂

I will have Panti, Kos, Terry, Hazard, Sanchez, Austin so that's already 6

Come GW34 I may well want 11 tbh so I'll need to bring in

Costa/Ivan Giroud, and potentially Skrtel, Sterling and Hendo depending on whether Pool go into 34

Might be hard work to get all of those in GW34 (if Pool go in) without a wc

In theory, but you're going to have a pretty poor GW33 team I suppose. Teams like City and Spurs have alright fixtures as well.

I know it's not your title but the "perfect" DGW side is one that you finalise a few hours before the GW deadline.

The issue for non-wildcarders is not just GW 34, it is also GW 33. Assuming 3 Arsenal/Liverpool on the bench plus maybe Pantilimon or Given and that's a big chunk of budget not playing. Cheaper players from Villa, Sunderland, QPR and probably also Hull won't help. In fact players like PvA, O'Shea, Defoe, Johnson, Austin, Phillips and Hutton will have to be replaced before GW 33 to let them field 11 players.

For a lot of teams that will be a stress and will result in hits and weak GW 33 teams. Arriving in GW 34 with 2FTs will take some doing. Then you have the possibility of injuries to key DGW players you already own which would require additional hits to sort out.

It will help non-wildcarders if Liverpool-Hull is rescheduled for GW 37 of course. But that seems unlikely as it leaves no fallback if any unforeseen problem occurs (such as a postponement due to weather).

All this is making me realise how much of a coup GW33 and GW34 are going to be for wildcard holders. For non-wildcard holders I think it will be about not throwing good money after bad by taking too many hits or selling players you'll want back.

          Krul - Foster
          Bellerin - Bertrand - PVA - Kompany - Hutton
          Mane - Hazard - Silva - Eriksen - Boyd
          Aguero - Austin - Kane

1FT. 5.7m in bank. What to do?

          Kompa to Iva?
          Austin to Giroud?

I think what set Sir Alex apart from most other managers was his Plan B and Plan C.

LVG is out of his depth at the moment.

What? Lvg did have his plan B, the ref just didn't buy it

I thought that was his plan C? 😉

LVG's plan B - Stick Afro upfront and give him hopeless crosses and long balls

              LVG's plan C - Convert a football pitch into a swimming pool

I preferred Sir Alex' plan C which was to buy the team Howard Webb or a ref.

LVG's issue, from what I'm seeing, is he is relentlessly searching for a better system. This winds up leaving him with a worse and worse system.

It isn't hard to do well enough with the crop of players United have at the moment, he is making it exceedingly difficult. (Last night for example, that double sub at half time was a bit bonkers).

I own both Clyne and Bertrand.

          Worth shipping either of them?

My defence for this week would be :

          Terry. Bertrand. PvA

          Clyne on bench.

Why? GW 34 midweek is 3 weeks later. Scheduling into GW 37 is very risky, it could mean Liverpool and/or Hull having to play 2 midweek games that week if any unforeseen problem occurs.

Liverpool and Hull will have contingency plans in place and cleared with the FA. If Liverpool win the replay the most likely outcome is a swift announcement of the rescheduling of the Hull game in GW 34. It may even be provisionally stated before the replay takes place.

          Ozil --> Silva?

Main Mini league rival has Silva & Giroud to my Ozil and Austin.

I have a four point lead, so basically 4 points and Austin vs Giroud if i make the transfer.

Worth it - or can Ozil keep pace with Silva?

          Panti

          Kos, Lesoctt, Berty

          Sanchez, Hazard, Eriksen, Moses

          Aguero (c), Kane, Austin
