While Swansea and Liverpool are due to clash this evening, thereโ€™s still plenty for us to consider from the nine fixtures played out so far. Tim Sherwoodโ€™s impact at Aston Villa, Crystal Palaceโ€™s attacking trio, Sergio Agueroโ€™s recent toils and the thriving form of Olivier Giroud are all amongst our lunchtime topics…

Giroud’s the Big Gun…
Whilst Alexis Sanchez’ simmer goes on with a fifth blank in six appearances and Mesut Ozil failed to fire against the Hammers, Olivier Giroud continues to provide points aplenty. Itโ€™s six goals and three assists in his last seven starts now for the Frenchman, who looks more or less immune to his managerโ€™s rotation โ€“ย with eight appearances in the Arsenal first XI over the last nine, he offers outstanding value at just 8.4. Up next for the Gunners is a trip to St Jamesโ€™ Park to face a woeful Newcastle defence robbed of suspended skipper Fabricio Coloccini โ€“ itโ€™s hard to see Giroud failing to take advantage, given his current level of performance.

You get what you pay for with Bellerin and Zouma…
Rested to the bench for home clashes with West Ham and Southampton, itโ€™s clear that the cut-price pair are not yet guaranteed starters for Arsenal and Chelsea. Uncertainty of pitch time is something we have to accept โ€“ perhaps less so with Bellerin, who should be restored at Newcastle as Arsene Wenger occasionally utilises Calum Chambers to cope with the Gunnersโ€™ schedule, which sees them still fighting on three fronts. If Wengerโ€™s side are knocked out of Europe by Monaco in midweek, fears over the young Spaniardโ€™s minutes are likely to ease.

Palaceโ€™s class of 2013 will keep them afloat…ย
While most of the recent interest had surrounding Jason Puncheon, it was Palaceโ€™s front three of Glenn Murray, Yannick Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha who ran amok in the 3-1 win over QPR. The trio were key to the Eaglesโ€™ promotion to the top flight in 2012/13 and, back together once again, tore apart the Rโ€™s defence as Pardewโ€™s side moved 11 points clear of their visitors. The Murray-Bolasie-Zaha combination has played twice in the league this term โ€“ also registering a 3-1 win over West Ham in Gameweek 27โ€“ and they have served up three goals and as many assists between them over those matches. With Stoke, Sunderland, West Brom and Hull in the next five, Pardewโ€™s troops could well seal their safety before too long, though with Puncheon and Zaha limping off last weekend, the Palace boss faces an anxious wait over their availability.

Pearson could keep Schlupp on a leash…
After months on the left of the Leicester midfield, the Ghana international was handed the left wing-back berth as Paul Konchesky dropped out of the starting XI for the visit of Hull. Our hopes were high that Schlupp would offer us an out-of-position prospect for a run-in that hands the Foxes six home clashes in the final ten fixtures but Saturdayโ€™s teamsheet suggested otherwise. With Nigel Pearson opting for the pace of Jamie Vardy on the left of his attack in the 5-2-3 formation, Schlupp may have to settle for a more withdrawn role, though a clean sheet and bonus point on Saturday wasnโ€™t too much of a deterrent for would-be suitors. In order for Schlupp to prosper as an attacking outlet, however, we need Konchesky back in the picture.

Sherwood’s attack boasts a set of differentials…
A 4-0 thrashing of Sunderland took Villaโ€™s run to three consecutive wins under new boss Tim Sherwood. Clearly, the confidence gained by back-to-back victories over a resilient West Brom has given Villa the shot in the arm they so desperately required and the recent move to a two-man frontline is paying off. Sherwoodโ€™s decision to pair Christian Benteke with Gabby Agbonlahor has seen the duo score three times apiece in the last two Gameweeks, with the big Belgian also supplying an assist. With Leandro Bacuna impressing and supplying a pair of assists from right-back, though, Alan Hutton could struggle to regain his right-back berth once heโ€™s free from suspension.

Ramseyโ€™s form could hand Wenger a headache…
With the midweek trip to Monaco clearly in mind, Arsene Wengerโ€™s decision to bench Santi Cazorla handed the Welshman a first start in six rounds of fixtures. With the defensive qualities of Francis Coquelin affording the Gunners greater balance in the middle of the park, Ramsey has had to play second fiddle to Cazorla and Mesut Ozil of late but his goal and assist in the 3-0 win over the Hammers served a reminder of his capabilities. It was noticeable last season that most of Ramseyโ€™s best displays came with Ozil on the park, and with Cazorla out of the equation on Saturday, he delivered a 14-point haul alongside the German to stake a claim for further pitch time over the run-in.

We can’t rely on Aguero in the 4-4-2…
Partnered by Edin Dzeko this time around, the Argentine had eight attempts on goal during Cityโ€™s loss at Burnley โ€“ we can hardly accuse him of going missing in recent matches. Nonetheless, we need Manuel Pellegrini to return to the lone striker system to unlock Agueroโ€™s full potential as a sure-fire captaincy candidate โ€“ over his nine appearances since returning from injury, the City striker has embarked on four-match and three-match runs without scoring. Bearing in mind he failed to find to notch in back-to-back matches on just one occasion in the opening 15 Gameweeks, itโ€™s clear heโ€™s yet to return to his clinical best. With Harry Kane set to face Leicester, Burnley and Villa in the next three, the Argentine is no longer our go-to guy for the armband: it’s already neck-and-neck in the Gameweek 30 Captain Poll.

But we can always rely on Boyd…
Burnleyโ€™s summer signing took his tally to five strikes for the season with the winner against City โ€“ the second time he has scored against the champions this term. Ever-reliable, Boyd has defined what we need from a fifth midfielder and has seen off the challenge of a number of pretenders as the budget option of choice around these parts. We can’t blame him for getting our auto-subs wrong.

Martinez isnโ€™t afraid to tinkerโ€ฆ
Despite their success in Europe so far, itโ€™s fair to say the Toffees have been toiling on the domestic front. Prior to yesterdayโ€™s visit of Newcastle, Roberto Martinezโ€™ men had scored just three times in the previous seven Gameweeks and failed to win any of the last five as they slipped dangerously close to the drop zone. The Spaniardโ€™s answer was to rip up his lone striker system and, handing Arouna Kone a place alongside Romelu Lukaku, watched his side rout the Magpies 3-0, with the latter serving up a ten-point return โ€“ his highest of the season. With QPR, Swansea and Burnley in the next four, Martinez will surely be tempted to maintain his more offensive approach as the Toffees look to secure their safety. Lukakuโ€™s converted penalty came at a time when Leighton Baines was on the park and suggests the left-backโ€™s stock continues to diminish further, bearing in mind heโ€™s already relinquished a share of set-piece duties this season.

Mane will be in profit if the Saints start firing…
The Saints midfielder was deployed behind lone striker Shane Long for the trip to Stamford Bridge as Ronald Koeman finally lost patience with the misfiring Graziano Pelle up front. Maneโ€™s pace through the middle caused the Blues problems aplenty โ€“ felled by Nemanja Matic for the visitorsโ€™ penalty, his trickery persuaded Jose Mourinho to haul off the Serbian, who teetered dangerously close to a second yellow. In Maneโ€™s last ten league appearances, Southampton have found the net on nine occasions, with eight of those strikes coming when heโ€™s been on the pitch โ€“ given that heโ€™s played a part in seven of those goals (notching five times and producing two assists) he looks poised to take advantage of some eye-catching fixtures for the St Maryโ€™s outfit.

Van Gaal has a dilemma with Di Mariaโ€ฆ
With the Argentine sitting out a one-match suspension, United turned in what was, for many, their most impressive display of the season at home to Tottenham yesterday. Prior to last Mondayโ€™s cup dismissal, Di Maria had been hauled off before the hour mark in each of the last two Gameweeks and it was noticeable that Louis van Gaal chose to hail his midfield in the 3-0 win over Mauricio Pochettinoโ€™s men. With Liverpool, City and Chelsea in the next four, the Red Devils boss can ill-afford any slip-ups if heโ€™s to clinch a top-four finish and, judging byย yesterdayโ€™s team performance, thereโ€™d be no eyebrows raised if the Argentine was handed bench-warming duties for the weekend trip to Anfield. Marouane Fellaini, on the other hand, goes from strength to strength under Van Gaal, with yesterday’s goal and assist surely cementing his spot in the starting XI for the foreseeable future.

We need clarity on Foster’s injury…
A 1-0 win over Stoke took West Bromโ€™s tally to six clean sheets in nine since Tony Pulis arrived at the Hawthorns earlier this year. The Baggies defence goes on performing and, given their price tags, there seems real merit in doubling up, though the prognosis on Ben Fosterโ€™s knee injury could be key to our plans. Certainly, with a trip to City up next many will be happy to bench their West Brom assets but with back-to-back home encounters against Leicester and QPR up next, and a trip to Palace in Gameweek 33, Boaz Myhill could be a real bargain at just 4.0 if Foster is consigned to a spell on the sidelines.

Earlier in the season early transfers are a good idea to build up funds...but they should be building up funds so they don't have to take risks later on in the season...otherwise what's the point ?

Think I'll do without him.. lots of other options and for a striker to score in a 1-1 and not get any bonus points is a bit of a worry.

Yep. Didn't know that about Ramsey's hauls with Ozil on the pitch. Nevertheless, can't see him really being an option if he's gonna be competing with Cazorla. Wilshere back soon too. Giroud seems the standout attacker

I was considering Sanchez -> Ramsey for half a second but I think I'll just keep him for the next few and get rid for the blank.. Chelsea, Hull (away) and United (away) in the 4 games after the blank isn't too appealing either.

I'm very lost on where to start this week with it. Struggling with the moves for this week as I don't want them to impact the team badly longer term (funds mainly). 2FT, unsure whether to use 1 or both. No idea how to use the 1 I have due to the keeper dilemma.

Blank GW33 and want rid (in order): Panti, PVA, Bruce, Bellerin (pending Debuchy recovery).
Game in GW33 and want to buy: GK (all options are crap or expensive), Davies, Aldy, Ivanovic.

Panti out for Migolet would be ideal as it's a cheap way into Liverpool defence long term, though it leaves a blank still. Forster 5.6 and Fabianski 5.2 seem very steep, seeing as Aldy is 4.7 and Naughton is 4.3.

I really should be looking to bolster my Chelsea players this week. Ivan and Terry double up is an option, though I'm not overly keen (funds).

    Argh.

Good strategic, post. I also would like to move Panti, and am thinking that it would wait until a GW34 wc. Given that you Hamer as your other keeper, perhaps Panti to either Foster or Myhill (if Foster is out) could be an alternative at keeper.

Agree that your defense could use some movement. Perhaps if you break down your steps into immediate tactics, the overall strategy is not as daunting:

      PvA > Aldy
Someone somehow > Ivan (great advice, I know...)

      1. Breadbin
        • 15 Years
        10 years, 10 months ago

If Foster is out for a while, Hamer > Myhill is my easy move. PVA to Aldy also seems sensible for me.

It feels very strange not getting Chelsea/Leicester players in to ensure GW34 is full of DGW players. 2 transfers could go here without me getting one of them, that's the major daunting part.

        Thank you.

You are not alone in the complexity of the upcoming strategy, and yet we have time to optimize the DGW folks. Don't overlook the fact that Chelsea do not fill the net. They seem to win games 2-0, 2-1, etc. Ivan feels like the most important Blue to have at this point.

I am also looking at the whole Foster/Myhill situation as I think Sunderland is just messed up to have Panti anymore. Giving up 4 goals at home to Villa could be bad omen of even worse things to come. Schlupp could be a good replacement for our cheapest defender. Amazing how this board capitalized on this guy this past gw. I was not a believer.

      Giroud (Goal Scoring Form)
Kane (Ever Dangerous, you just can't write him off)
Aguero (Not Scoring but we know what danger he possess)
      Costa (DGW, Gaining Good Form)
Rooney (Averaging 7 points in the last 3 games)

With the template starting to potentially falter (Aguero, Sanchez etc) - when will you make your differential move?

Are you worried about making the move first and potentially losing places or will you be a maverick and get on the next bandwagon early?

What is the best hope for those of us without wildards? If we try to get the same players as those with wildcards for GW34 our transfers in the run up will all have to be based on GW34 which surely leaves us at a massive disadvantage. Is it better to end up with some SGW players with good fixtures in GW34? This could create a better squad in other gameweeks and also ensure differentials for GW34

Saving a wildcard for a DGW has two advantages, as you point out:
        1. A new squad full of DGWers for the DGW, and
        2. The chance to also field a strong team in the preceding blank GW without the handicap of having to plan ahead for the DGW.

I'm very happy to still have my Main Wildcard for this purpose - but I'm not sure it really makes up for all the points I lost through not playing it earlier!

Do you think Silva is a must-have ? Would you get him in if you didn't own him yet ? Or is it better to look elsewhere ?

Mane is in great form and has nice fixtures. Also will Downing or Sigurdsson become options again ?

"Dullardhino" is probably the ideal - follow the parts of the template that are the best options, and don't go for any old differential just for the sake of it, but if your judgement is better than the template then trust your judgement.

Also depends on your outlook - whether you are happy to maintain your current position, or whether you are trying for something more and prepared to take the risk of being slightly different.

Many rosters have several players who'll have a blank in GW33 but, a DGW34...
So should we ever intentionally field 10 so we can squeeze in as many DGW players we can?

eg. Not inconceivable to have a squad with some combo of blank to DGW players such as:
      Giroud, Cazorla, Bellerin & Austin.

(Note: The actual players are inconsequential here. It's just the overall idea I'm curious about.)

I think it depends on whether the player with the blank followed by a DGW is expected to score more than the player he replaces who has two single games.

Another question is whether it is worth taking a hit in order to field a full 11 in the short GW followed by an extra DGW player in the DGW. In this case, the extra player in the short GW needs to score at least 4 points, and the extra DGW player needs to outscore him by at least 4 points in the DGW.

And the third point to consider is whether having too many DGW players will mess up your squad for the GWs that follow.

If we all have basically the same players and they all have great fixtures, then almost every attacking transfer is sideways at best in the surface. Hope this will be a great time for more differentials and under appreciated players to hit big -- if the template dominates this upcoming gw it will be a bit sad.

Two weeks ago the template did well. This past gw, it regressed to the mean. It is difficult to evaluate on a week to week basis, but now that Chelsea and Man City have struggled a bit to score, and Arsenal scores but you have to flip a coin each week to have the correct Gunner who actually does score (Giroud seemingly being the guy to have, and I do NOT have him), then it is cracking. This is good. The more different ways to win, the better the game.

... Now try completing a March Madness bracket. THAT will mess your mind. [I have competing fantasy priorities this week!]

Reposting, in case there are any sage reactions to my new plan for world domination (or failure, more aptly):

My new plan, 2FT, 0.6 itb:

    Panti, Heaton
    Ivan, Bertrand, Bellerin, Dawson, Baird
    Hazard, Sanchez, Silva, Eriksen, Boyd
    Kun, Kane, Austin

    1. Bellerin > Toby (Rationale: Bellerin has a blank sooni-sh and is a rotation risk; Toby more nailed, on a stronger defensive team with better fixtures)
    2. Sanchez > Mane or Siggy or Hendo (Rationale: Need to create cash and Sanchez is just not the same production-wise since the Arsenal midfield got healthy and is chewing up huge asset allocation that could be more wisely spent elsewhere.
    3. Austin > Giroud or Costa (Rationale: QPR just too weak to rely on Austin to produce consistently)

Not sure if I am going to make all three transfers this week, or just the Bellerin to Toby trade. If I had more cash, I would sell Baird to Toby, but that is not a straight trade that I can do. Either way, at least two of these trades will wait until after midweek Champions League matches.

They are defensively solid team, I don't see them conceding more than 2. Unless Sanchez turns up and creates a miracle.

        Very unlikely ๐Ÿ™

Oh you're done either way. No way you put three past them without the Berba doing you at least once. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    As things stand:
    ..........................Panti
Bellerin // PVA // Wollschield (Jones // Dawson)
Hazard // Eriksen // Sanchez // Mane (Puncheon)
    ..............Kane // Aguero // Austin

      3.5 in the bank and 2 FT's

Logical plan: Jones and PVA -----> Ivanovic and Toby.. Sound good????
Anything more pressing?? I can bench Puncheon

Has to be...Best two defences in the league, One is a steal at 4.7 and the other is the top defender in the game with SGW33 and DGW34...and both totally nailed on...

I think this would be on the mind of everyone this game week.

Which is a bigger risk ???

Following the template team or Sticking to differentials

Or is it about balancing both...if so then what percentage of the template & the differential should comprise your team??
