Branislav Ivanovic refined his breathless brand of two-way full-back play to a fine art this season, posting his greatest haul of attacking returns while ensuring that solid defensive principles weren’t neglected in the process. The ever-consistent Serb was subsequently named in the PFA Team of the Year for his efforts and deservedly earns a spot in our own interpretation.

The Statistics

Ivanovic swiftly established himself as the prime defensive pick in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), notching two goals, an assist, five bonus points and a clean sheet during Chelsea’s opening three fixtures.

Having started at 7.0, the Serbian international then hovered around the 7.2 mark for the first half of the campaign, before a hugely profitable seven-match stretch – which harvested two goals and three assists – attracted a surge of investors and triggered a price rise to 7.6. By virtue of the Blues’ eight clean sheet in their final 18 matches, Ivanovic remained a popular pick till the last and ended the season with a 30% ownership.

Ivanovic is famed for his rampaging runs down the flank and penchant for scoring in bursts – traits that are reflected in his underlying statistics. The former Lokomotiv Moscow defender headed up the defender leaderboards with regards to goal attempts (44), shots inside the box (30) and shots on target (11). Furthermore, Ivanovic was a creative powerhouse, ranking third in terms of key passes (36) and first for successful passes in the opponents’ final third (378). Only Leighton Baines (11 – two goals, nine assists) contributed to more goals than the title-winning full-back (10 – four goals, six assists) over the course of the season.

With a total score of 179 points, Ivanovic topped the FPL defender rankings and placed sixth in the overall standings. Eden Hazard, with his unrivalled 233-point haul, was the only player on Chelsea’s roster to boast a superior tally. In spite of these attacking exploits, Ivanovic was awarded just 13 bonus points in 38 appearances, trailing John Terry (14) and Cesar Azpilicueta (19) in that respect.

The Prospects

Chelsea were the standout defensive team of the 2014/15 league season, recording more clean sheets (17) than any other outfit. Moreover, the London club conceded the fewest goals (32), big chances (35) and shots inside the box (208) – a feat surely aided by the excellent shielding qualities of enforcer Nemanja Matic. As such, one Chelsea defender is likely to be a staple among the starting squads in next season’s FPL, with Ivanovic and Terry tussling for the same berth.

Despite starting last term at a higher price than Terry (7.0 to 6.5), Ivanovic was the premier choice for much of the campaign, yet the latter’s late flourish (two goals in the last five Gameweeks) greatly strengthened the Blues captain’s case for inclusion.

Given that the pair were two of only four outfield players to manage every minute last term, their consistency of minutes under Jose Mourinho is clearly crucial to how we view their prospects. It remains to be seen whether Terry’s ageing limbs will be able to handle another full season without a rest, though, and Ivanovic, for many, remains the prime pick amongst the Blues’ rearguard.

A price hike to 7.5 isn’t out of the question, though irrespective of any cost adjustments, Ivanovic is sure to enjoy a high ownership due to his favourable returns per unit of investment. Aside from Harry Kane – who’s a special case due to his unforeseen emergence – Ivanovic is by far the cheapest among the top six highest-scoring players of the concluded season. Considering only three midfielders and two forwards managed to better his overall score, then, he makes a strong claim for investing.

Key to his appeal is the Serbian’s consistency. Ivanovic’s penchant for picking up points at both ends of the pitch meant that he produced either attacking or defensive returns in 24 of his 38 appearances, and he only seems to be improving with age. Having carded his best points tally (beating the previous season’s 159) and attacking output (surpassing his four goals and five assists in the 2010/11 campaign), Ivanovic seems to be enjoying a greater freedom to bomb forward and his raids down the right will surely be pivotal to Chelsea’s title tilt once again.

      Clear winner here!

Brought Giroud in for Rooney for a hit and even captained him when he headbutted in Qpr game.

Roonpig got 16 points and Giroud brought me -4.

Best: having Sanchez from the start, or captaining Kane for his hat trick
Worst: ditching Costa GW3, not getting Aguero or Tadic/Pelle for GW8, and taking the armband off Austin on the morning of his hat trick.

I fully expect this all to have been orchestrated by Blatter to clear out the competition and leave him as undisputed ruler of FIFA yet again, much like last time. The timing seems particularly handy... again.

Even Blatter isn't that clever and the timing is not good for him; uncovering corruption in the organisation he's in charge of implies either incompetence or complicity.

Tottenham are ready to bid £12m for Burnley striker Danny Ings, according to Sky sources.

Ings is out of contract next month and has been linked with Liverpool, and any club signing the 23-year-old on a free transfer would have to pay Burnley compensation.

    --

why do you pay compensation for a free transfer?

Every season Ivanovic starts well, every season I avoid him.

No matter what the price, if he's injury free, he will be amongst the first names on my team sheet in 2015/16. I don't need to see his price to know I'll draft him in.

      Fabregas (see below)

      Players who won't be:

Aguero - Copa America, will be eased back in (Pellegrini has said so)
      Sanchez - ditto
Hazard - Started off the season behind Fabregas, after 5-6 gws i brought him in and had both and then come New Year drop Fabregas as he tails off and keep Hazard, this i think is the optimal strategy

  11. Cult Team of the Year Revealed
    Defcons are for Kinnear
    • 13 Years
    11 years, 2 months ago

The results are in for the forwards in our Bargain Basement Cult Team 2014/2015. The two obvious choices were of course Kane and Austin. Grabbing third place was Vardy

    Kane (33 votes)
    Austin (31 votes)
    Vardy (10 votes)

The votes for the third forward spot were spread out with Berahino(7 votes), Ings (6 votes) and Sakho (5 votes) next in line.

Our final squad looks like this

    Pantillimon Schmeichel
    Bellerin PVA Hutton C.Dawson N.Taylor
    Sigurdsson Boyd Downing Chadli Henderson
    Kane Austin Vardy

I'll be putting together an article for this team. It'll be my first article for FFS so wish me luck. Please let me know what I should include in the article. Currently I'm thinking

Moments that gave these men the Cult status
    Team Value (start and finish)
Points/Overall Rank as a Dead Team
Points/Overall Rank with that Gargatron thingy. If any of you boffins could help with the last 2 it'd be much appreciated as I don't have a clue how to work them out

Perhaps some sort of graphs of their ownership by gameweek

    2. Jay_

That team is pleasing on the eye, with Kane captain and Boyd first sub and defence auto subs looking after their selves different weeks, I think that team could be rank 1, or would at least have been rank 1 by Christmas time, be interesting if someone could work that out.

          I'm afraid it's nowhere near 1st

          Pantilimon 123 (missed GW1-9, 33, 38)
          Taylor 109 (missed GW15, 33-34, 38)
          Dawson 99 (missed GW15-22, 31)
          Bellerin 77 (missed GW1-7, 10-14, 17-20, 26, 29, 33)
          Henderson(V) 162 (missed GW12,33) + 23 (GW3, 5-6, 8, 27)
          Chadli 160 (missed GW1, 12-13, 27)
          Downing 160 (missed GW12)
          Sigurdsson 154 (missed GW17, 23-25, 27, 38)
          Kane(C) 191*2 (missed GW3, 5-6, 8, 27)
          Austin 176 (missed GW2, 16, 25, 27, 33)
          Vardy 120 (missed GW1-2, 19, 25, 27)
          Schmeichel(B) 25 (GW1-3, 5-9, 33, 38)
          Boyd(B1) 48 (GW2, 5-6, 8, 12-13, 16-17, 19, 23-25, 27, 33, 38)
          PVA(B2) 38 (GW1-7, 10, 21-22, 25-27, 29, 31, 34, 38)
          Hutton(B3) 33 (GW1-3, 12, 16, 18-20, 25, 27)
          Total score 1889 (637,616th)

Even the optimal affordable dead team would only have finished 4th.

I could probably plug it into my Dead Team spreadsheet if you like. I doubt I have the week-by-week scores of all 15 of those players so I'd need you to work those out, but after that it's pretty simple.

I don't generally like starting with a player that I know will just give me a headache. I started this year with Jovetic, and he did well to start, but he and a couple of other rotation worries/injuries meant I had to WC really early.

Wba double up in defence if possible with a 4.0 cheap villa def would be nice.

Whu really depends on who takes over but I don't think their will be much interest in them with price hikes across the board. Cry bollaise or Zaha could be interesting depending on price

Leicester will get price hikes but there may still be some value there depending on fixt. Not sure about rotating them with nor though

New should get decent drop in price, same as sunderland. There might be real value here depending on who is in charge

Stoke swansea will be massively over priced I think although bojan, gomis, diouf and maybe on or two others could be interesting.

If foster is 5.0 or less I'll probably go the one gk route with a wba def. Pulis has stuck with cb's as fbs for a long time with stoke I wouldn't be surprised to see him keep Dawson there

Yeah I'd say same again for kun based on that logic and maybe a slight increase to 12.5 due to playing more minutes. I can't see him hitting 13.5m unless he has a couple of monster seasons In a row.

Someone has run competitions on this kind of thing in seasons gone by - chosen a list of 50 players and got people to put their predictions forward. Lowest deviation from the actual prices when they're revealed wins.

12.5 would be good for Kun, can see ihim being 13.0 though which would be unfortunate.

Haz - 11 seems about right

      Ivan - 7.5 (wouldnt pay)

      PvA - 5

Kane - 10 seems a bit steep. 9.0-9.5 more likely.

Kun at 13 just makes sense. He's the league's flagship striker, he very rarely blanks and is explosive. To only go up by 0.5 after a season like this one would be very, very generous.

Equally, Hazard's consistency means he should be up to 12.0, to keep us honest.

      Aguero - 13
      Hazard - 12
Costa - 11.5 (which will actually be quite generous)
Kane - 9.5 (historically the price that Spurs strikers max at minus Ade's mental season)
      PVA 5
Ivan 8 (because he always starts so well...)

        Mané 7.5m - 8.0m
        Barkley 6.5m

I am interested to see how much the promoted players are, Ritchie, Wilson, Deeney, Anya, Redmond and Jerome.

He's one of those massively tempting players, true. If Liverpool sort out their strikers (fitness and form) then the 'Pool midfield could be a goldmine of points. On the other hand, if they play like this year then they could be unpredictable at best.

Hopefully England get the 18 or 22 world cup after all, never in my life have I felt the country so patriotic and together as Euro 96, the Olympics wasn't on the same level and is boring anyway, would love to get a world cup !

Olympics boring... There are some seriously incredible sports people on show there with more passion than the Liverpool Team collectively showed all season!!

In my opinion its a shame you can't appreciate it...

But as for FIFA I can't believe something hasn't been done sooner... its so obvious, but obviously very complicated.

Well so far they've only gone for CONCACAF & CONMEBOL, since these have US connections.

CAF & AFC are probably more rotten, so you can only imagine.

Supposedly four arrested have already pleaded guilty?

yep, that's my understanding as well.

At least they say 4 individual defendants and 2 corporate ones, not exactly sure who the corporate ones are.

a lot depends on who Spurs buy, if he had the right service he would be amazing,

he will disappoint in FPL terms because he will be too expensive.

in 'rea life' I would expect him to improve, he will have more game time now that he has nailed down his place in the first team. that goal on the last day was the confidence booster he needs and be interested to see if he gets any more minutes for England.

he has a bright future ahead of him and another good year at Spurs will be interested to see where ends up after that.

Comparing to the others, it seems that I tend to bench the wrong players.

My subs just never played, I'd be amazed if my 3rd sub got any points all season.

nice, I tend to pick players who start regularly, at least I prefer to have playing backup then a maxed out budget.

It's an app for Chrome called Gargatron, when you are on your points page, it can calculate them.

Thanks! My VC was higher than my C scores around GW 27-28 or so which means I turned that around.

So Aussie boys did well. Lost 1-0 from a tidy finish by right back pedro. Went down to ten men early second half but we created some good chances after that and defended well.
That manc Perreira came on late. Quite a talent. Jordan Homes GK for Bournemouth is quality. Suppose Federici will take him under his wing now. Looked much more assured than #1 Glover from Tottenham.
Danilo, Malcolm, Pedro and Gabriel Jesus were all class but the #9 Judivan impressed me the most. He's a beast and has some serious swagger.
We played the same style as Brazil, which is good to see from our youngens. Aussie football has changed so much in the last decade 🙂

I have no doubt that the Aussies would be just as good at footy as they are at many other sports if they had better competition on a more regular basis. Sadly, just like the USA, geography is against you.

I'll stick by what I said last year. As the Fifa crooks are being arrested for brown envelopes and corruption we need to remember that is only half the story....the other half is the people who gave them the brown envelopes. World football needs to boycott the next two world cups, as anything else is simply sanctioning corruption in the game. Arresting the officials and then attending the WC's that they corruptly granted is simply filling the pockets of corrupt individuals in those countries hosting the World Cup/s....It's simply not acceptable.

I really hope we do get boycott's especially from UEFA nations who hold the most sway. Knowing England though we'll blow our chance to boycott by not qualifying 😆

Very possibly. We simply can not sanction a corruptly organised event by attending it. What message does that send out ?....World Football needs to grow a set of it's own balls to stop this lark.
