After yesterday’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tool have both been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the pre-season reveals more on likely starting lineups and roles.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections almost every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

This Arsenal midfield ... same conversations we were all having late last year.

Head says Ramsey / Cazorla, heart says Walcott, something else says Ozil ...

We should bring Hales and Morgan in for Lyth and Ballance next test, too much pressure on Root at 5 here at least Hales will score quickly and in this kind of situation could have batted Aussies out of game in a hour, if he gets out its no worse than Lyth would have done anyway

The only way we could know your current team is if you give us your password and we effectively log in as you. So, until the season launches you need to add players in manually one by one. I find it only takes about a minute to do, plus you can see the pieces of the puzzle coming together as you build, which is quite fun.

LEI/AST actually do not rotate that well. They start out well, but actually have 18 games where they both play home or away. Lei/Sou are better as there are only 4 games where they play home/away at the same time.

Probably should have pointed out that I won't be directly rotating the two. I'm going for one Chelsea defender, another mid priced defender that starts most games and three 4.5 defenders that can be rotated in and out as needed.

For those going without Aguero, what is the plan for a (c) choice?

Hazard/ Costa every week or play the fixtures?

Personally I want Aguero in from the start because:

    1) I think he'll start the season - been subbed at 70 mins every game for Argentina (I assume at the request of Man City) so that he can be fresh for the new season.

    2) I think he'll be the TGS again this season

    3) Fixture proof and can score in any game pretty much. Reliable (c) choice

    - Central striker on penalties for a top 5 team.

One can argue he over performed. The main issue is that I value Giroud and Tekkers higher than Kane because they are cheaper and should perform to a similar level if not better. Kane is just a little bit too expensive, 8.5-9 would be better.

Stumbled across an interesting three man 4.5m rotation of Leicester, Sunderland and Bournemout (will also work well with CPL but I don't trust them defensively). Gives you through first 20GWs:

SUN NOR SWA LEI AVL SUN sto WAT wba NEW wba WAT new STO swa WAT wba CPL LIV BOU

If anyone else has suggestions for a 3x 4.5m rotation would be helpful

This is a tough one, I would probably go with Mata

Arsenal's midfielders all share the responsibility to create but Ozil is the standout man of the bunch for this.

Mata is on penalties and likes to get forward though

Do you see Hazard as captain material? His high score seem to come from getting max baps with a single 5pt goal. But I never feel comfortable with predicting them...

Aguero on the other hand is more explosive, and averages 6.5 points per game, over Hazard's 6.1, He seems to be more reliable to score in the easier fixtures than Haz.

Is Haz worth getting if you don't captain him often, especially when there are so many great 8.5/9.0 mids?

      • 12 Years

I've concluded that as I nearly always get the Hazard captaincy wrong and have been put off from doing it recently, Cesc is getting a chance for a few weeks.

yeah, I'm actually leaning that way

IF Hazard has lost pens then he's definitely not worth it

but Kun is definitely a more reliable (c) than Haz

I'm very comfortable captaining Hazard personally. His goal threat will always be there, especially when he has penalties but his chances created are out of this world aren't they? Imagine Costa for the entire season knocking those in.

    6. AK ⭐
      • 13 Years
      11 years, 8 days ago

I do think he is. But I just think captaining Costa is more reliable over Hazard. Having said that, Costa's injury prone and also a card magnet and you never know when he might be sent off.

As for Hazard, there are no such issues and also seems to be on penalties. Not as comfortable captaining Aguero and even Costa, but definitely one of them.

Your midfield is not too flexible to bandwagons. Say a 7.0/7.5m mid looks a must have GW1-2. How do you slot him in? There is always someone...

All the selections are solid, I just think the balance needs tweaking.

Hmm. My rotation is pretty set on that, unless I downgrade the 4.5 keeper to 4.0 then I'll have 1.0 to spend

i think you need somebody at £8.5m as your third mid because there are so many players at that price who might go nuts...i'd save money in gk/defence

in fact although it's going to be a risky play i'm tempted to go without hazard and get 4 mids at £8.5m or more...it's at least possible that walcott and depay will be "must have" oop strikers
