Having already acquired Sebastian Coates from Liverpool, Sunderland continued to strengthen in defensive areas with the acquisition of Celtic right-back Adam Matthews on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site, the 23-year-old was delighted to team up with the Black Cats:

“It’s been very exciting. It happened really quickly which has been a bit of a shock. Playing in the Barclays Premier League and in front of great fans and in a big stadium is something I’m looking forward to. Obviously, at Celtic I played in front of massive crowds and I’m sure they’ll be just as good if not better here so I’m really looking forward to it.”

The History

Born in Wales, Matthews broke his arm during a trial with Swansea City only to discover that their youth set-up had filled their quota by the time he’d recovered. He turned instead to rivals Cardiff City, joining their academy at the age of eight.

The defender penned a professional contract with the Bluebirds in 2009, before making his senior debut in a 1-1 draw against Blackpool at the start of the 2009/10 Championship season. Injuries elsewhere in the squad afforded the young right-back a couple of starts, with his performances in those fixtures convincing manager Dave Jones to select him on a regular basis. Such was his impressive emergence, Matthews courted interest from Manchester United and was named as the Football League Apprentice of the Year.

Kevin McNaughton reclaimed his starting berth the following season, restricting Matthews to just two starts. Nonetheless, the Wales international earned a move to Celtic in the summer of 2011 and went on to record 27 appearances in his debut campaign for the Hoops. Despite missing 11 matches through injury the following season, Matthews tallied an eye-catching two goals and eight assists in just 22 appearances. He continued to exhibit a propensity for attacking returns in a further two injury-hit seasons, registering two goals and 12 assists in 52 appearances across the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns.

Matthews received a handful of caps for the Wales U17, U19 and U21 outfits, before making his senior debut against Scotland in May 2011. He’s made a further 11 appearances for the Dragons since that date but has yet to register a goal.

The Prospects

Matthews’ arrival on Wearside places question marks over the pitch time of Billy Jones for the Black Cats. Having seen off the challenge of Anthony Reveillere, Jones started each of the final eight matches in 2014/15 at right-back, but the former Baggies defender now faces strong competition for a regular start in 2015/16.

Matthews may take his time to settle, though, after conceding that Dick Advocaat is determined to improve the defensive aspect of his game:

“He (Advocaat) just said ‘we’ve been watching you for a while, I like what I see but you’ve got to work on a few things and hopefully I can make you a better player’. I’m sure he’ll be able to do that and with the players here I can only improve. I’m very excited to just get started. I like to attack but the manager has already told me I need to work on my defending so I’ll try my best to do that. I like to get on the ball, I like to get forward and hopefully score a few goals.”

Priced at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Matthews could definitely be one to watch if he can stay injury-free and edge ahead of Jones in the pecking order. The former Celtic defender tallied a whopping 20 assists in the past three seasons, despite clocking just 5,285 minutes of pitch time – to put that into context, the rampaging Leighton Baines tops the assists charts (19) for Premier League defenders across the last three campaigns, yet he needed 4,244 more minutes to achieve that total.

Matthews is also versatile enough to operate on the right flank, though he’s likely to rely on minutes as a member of Advocaat’s back-four over the coming campaign. Certainly his kind price – compared to Costel Pantilimon and Patrick van Aanholt at 5.0 apiece – will give Fantasy managers food for thought as we eye up a route into a defence that managed 13 clean sheets (six home, seven away) last season, the same number as Arsenal.

Granted, Van Aanholt ranked fourth amongst defenders in terms of shots (30) and fourth for key passes (35) in 2014/15 and is nailed on by comparison, whilst Pantilimon (who earned 4.4 points per appearance last time out) is set to benefit from a change to the BPS scoring, which should boost his chances of Bonus Points through saved shots. Both have the potential to still prove better value for money.

For now, those who are looking to spend only 4.5 on the Black Cats’ backline may be best opting for fellow new boy Coates or skipper John O’Shea. Coates started each of the last six alongside the Irishman last season and is favourite to get the nod ahead of the injury-plagued Wes Brown. Furthermore, a BPS change on clearances, blocks and interceptions should prove beneficial to centre-halves’ chances of earning Bonus.

Looking at the season ticker, the Black Cats’ schedule is rated second most favourable over the opening ten Gameweeks. With just two clashes against last term’s top seven over that period (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou, mun, WHM, wba, NEW), there’s every chance they could begin the campaign strongly.

Saw some stats from Trigs on his blog... Interesting read.

Long story short, looking at the stats suggest he hasn't been tearing it up for a while.... However - I think he will do well at Palace, as EVERYTHING will go through him.

Personally too much risk to start with for me though. Especially in context of fixtures

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Chips Ahoy! Or are the chips are down.

What do you think of the new 'chips' in FPL. Do you think they will ruin the game? Or do you think they are a necessary change?

Also what effect will this have on overall rank and mini-leagues? Will this mean those of us who plan our teams each week will benefit even more? Or will it give managers lucky breaks and mean our hard work is in vain?

    1. Saniul
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 8 months ago

No I think they make the games more interesting. Will also make mini-leagues where somebody has taken a 100-point league or so interesting as well - means less quitters, always better to have more players around.

I think they could have done away with the 2-5-3 chip though, that one is meaningless.

I'm sure this has already been a hot topic before?!

They're not a necessary change, but IMO, a welcome addition that will add an extra dimension of fun to the game.

My biggest concern is not being able to use the wildcard and bench chip during the same week. It'll mean teams will have to wildcard the week before the big DGW, which will give your rivals an idea of your DGW team ahead of time.

I think it would have been much better if you could wildcard and use all your chips in the same week if you wanted to, for that monster gameweek.

Delighted - glad for some innovation. Formation chip won't make much odds unless maybe if one has lots of defenders injured. Chips will suit the Triggers of this world and acolytes like myself. Glad the Jan wildcard is gone ; I always ruin my team with it, will hold 2nd wildcard until near the end unless we have weather disruptions.

I think it will add more of an element of luck, much like the current captain rule, but more so.

For that reason it may work against people who play more seriously however I think the advantage here will come by playing the "long game" and being patient to keep them until the right time.

I don't think the captain rule adds luck as your decisions should even out over the 38 weeks of the season, but I agree that these chips certainly add an extra element of luck to the game.

I'm pretty sure the captain rule does add luck. E.g. There are many weeks when, say, Aguero and Hazard are both on form and have a good fixture - both are an equally valid choice and no one can really say that one is a better choice than the other, yet we have to choose. And on any given such week, one could get a double digit haul whilst the other limps off after 20 minutes with 1 point - that's luck / bad luck, pure and simple.

That's luck one week. But over 38 weeks, I think judgement on who actually has the best fixture will override that luck.

      The 2-5-3 one is useless

The Second WC and Bench Bonus will be used together creating a template from that GW onwards. So basically the last 5 GW instead of having the same 7-8 players we all had in previous seasons we'll now all have the same 10-11 players

Triple Captain will be used in another DGW that could potentially undo weeks of good scores. Too hit and miss for my liking

Very good addition to the game
Imagine if last year Jinswick have this chips in order to chase #1, he wouldn't have to rely on Walcott to score a hattrick anymore or look at differential ONLY to chase...

Yes the triple captaincy is the one I have the biggest problem with. It's basically very much like the F1 double points for the last race idiocy.

Unlikely we will have 3 DGW's, or will we?

Too gimicking for me. The sort of thing would be better placed in UFPL.

I do think it'll probably suit the FFS crowd more than the casual though. I imagine most of us will hold it until DGWs, whereas others will give in to temptation earlier.

I'm not sure I like the impact on mini-leagues though - the triple captain for instance does rely on a fairly large element of luck. The 2-5-3 isn't really a major change. The bench one will be very handy if we get that bumper DGW.

Gimmicky nails the term. If you had a ghost team I'd wait for the loaded DGW and use all three and watch for next season to see what happens.

I think the danger is they will give people a false sense of security. Holding onto them to the latter half of the season might seem good but playing them at the right time is crucial, even if that happens to be in the first few GWs.

I think little novelties like this are a bit silly. Having WCs makes sense as it ties in with the transfer windows a little bit but having these new chips is just adding more variance to a game that is already full of variance. I guess it might keep a few randoms interested a bit more which is a good thing long term but other than that it sucks.

      It's totally crap.

I guess they've added them in to keep the casuals playing? I really don't think these 3 chips are going to excitement to keep them playing. Why not just focus their attention more on UFPL and get more people playing that? Why haven't they introduced any chips to UFPL? They could of had a chip where you could make 2/3 transfers for free in a week. Stuff like that to keep people playing UFPL.

Casuals won't pay money towards a game. You are right though, the chips are to keep the casuals interested and personally I think it will work. Takes their season beyond the old January template of doom at least.

Good Morning everybody! Been a member of this forum for 6 years now and for the first time since joining, my team Watford are in the Prem! Interested to see several RMTs with our players in!

I predict we'll sign another 5 or 6 players this window, starting this weekend with Behrami and (hopefully) Stambouli. Should be a few attacking players coming in soon too. So our starting line-up remains in doubt. Flores wants to play a 4-2-3-1.

Deeney's obviously the main man, with 60+ goals in 3 seasons plus lots of assists, and on penalties. Ighalo could be a good differential at 5.0. He had an amazing debut season, and netted twice in a friendly last week, playing as a 'second striker' behind Deeney.

Abdi has a tendency to get injured, but if fit he's a good value midfield option. Scored 9 last season, with a fair few assists too.

I've seen a few people ask about Anya, but I'm not sure he'll start as the club's busy looking for a new right back and winger. A better bet might be Holebas, the Greek international left-back signed from Roma (eventually lol..it was announced and he denied knowing about it!). Keep an eye on him when he gets an FF price as he likes to get forward a lot. I'm not sure we'll keep many clean sheets, but by signing Capoue, Behrami and most likely Stambouli the back four should get plenty of experienced cover.

Hope that helps anybody thinking of WFC players!!

Nothing's ever guaranted, especially with a new Head Coach, but Abdi (and Deeney) are as near as certain starters as you can get! He's our creator who makes things happen. Abdi's great value at that price.

I think all of Capoue, Stambouli and Behrami will be yellow card magnets and best avoided on FF. I'm not sure how many WFC players to pick this season, but if I had 3 it'd likely be Holebas, Abdi and Deeney. Depends too which creative players we sign as so far we've only signed from the back. We've been linked with about 50! Perotti, Doumbia, Diaminte, Okaka, Mertens, Inler etc etc!

It's so hard to say as we have a new Head Coach. Last year we tended to rotate Ighalo and Vydra, playing up top with Deeney. I love Vydra and really think he could thrive in the PL this season, but I'm not confident he'll start every match. Or if he does, he may up playing wide as one of the 3 behind Deeney.

DGW for the majority of teams. Let's just say that Aguero, Hazard or whoever is the flavour of the year has two juicy fixtures. Wildcard in hand from the previous week.

You can field 11 DGW players no problem. You could even go for all 15, although you'll have the likes of George Boyd and Paul McShane, due to team value constraints.

    Which chip do you use?

Triple captain: 13 x 2 = 26 fixtures, but one of them is Aguero at home to Hull and away to QPR.
Bench: 16 x 2 = 32 fixtures. You may miss out on that big 25 points from Aguero though, because he is not unlikely to score 25 points that week.
