Having already acquired Sebastian Coates from Liverpool, Sunderland continued to strengthen in defensive areas with the acquisition of Celtic right-back Adam Matthews on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site, the 23-year-old was delighted to team up with the Black Cats:

“It’s been very exciting. It happened really quickly which has been a bit of a shock. Playing in the Barclays Premier League and in front of great fans and in a big stadium is something I’m looking forward to. Obviously, at Celtic I played in front of massive crowds and I’m sure they’ll be just as good if not better here so I’m really looking forward to it.”

The History

Born in Wales, Matthews broke his arm during a trial with Swansea City only to discover that their youth set-up had filled their quota by the time he’d recovered. He turned instead to rivals Cardiff City, joining their academy at the age of eight.

The defender penned a professional contract with the Bluebirds in 2009, before making his senior debut in a 1-1 draw against Blackpool at the start of the 2009/10 Championship season. Injuries elsewhere in the squad afforded the young right-back a couple of starts, with his performances in those fixtures convincing manager Dave Jones to select him on a regular basis. Such was his impressive emergence, Matthews courted interest from Manchester United and was named as the Football League Apprentice of the Year.

Kevin McNaughton reclaimed his starting berth the following season, restricting Matthews to just two starts. Nonetheless, the Wales international earned a move to Celtic in the summer of 2011 and went on to record 27 appearances in his debut campaign for the Hoops. Despite missing 11 matches through injury the following season, Matthews tallied an eye-catching two goals and eight assists in just 22 appearances. He continued to exhibit a propensity for attacking returns in a further two injury-hit seasons, registering two goals and 12 assists in 52 appearances across the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns.

Matthews received a handful of caps for the Wales U17, U19 and U21 outfits, before making his senior debut against Scotland in May 2011. He’s made a further 11 appearances for the Dragons since that date but has yet to register a goal.

The Prospects

Matthews’ arrival on Wearside places question marks over the pitch time of Billy Jones for the Black Cats. Having seen off the challenge of Anthony Reveillere, Jones started each of the final eight matches in 2014/15 at right-back, but the former Baggies defender now faces strong competition for a regular start in 2015/16.

Matthews may take his time to settle, though, after conceding that Dick Advocaat is determined to improve the defensive aspect of his game:

“He (Advocaat) just said ‘we’ve been watching you for a while, I like what I see but you’ve got to work on a few things and hopefully I can make you a better player’. I’m sure he’ll be able to do that and with the players here I can only improve. I’m very excited to just get started. I like to attack but the manager has already told me I need to work on my defending so I’ll try my best to do that. I like to get on the ball, I like to get forward and hopefully score a few goals.”

Priced at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Matthews could definitely be one to watch if he can stay injury-free and edge ahead of Jones in the pecking order. The former Celtic defender tallied a whopping 20 assists in the past three seasons, despite clocking just 5,285 minutes of pitch time – to put that into context, the rampaging Leighton Baines tops the assists charts (19) for Premier League defenders across the last three campaigns, yet he needed 4,244 more minutes to achieve that total.

Matthews is also versatile enough to operate on the right flank, though he’s likely to rely on minutes as a member of Advocaat’s back-four over the coming campaign. Certainly his kind price – compared to Costel Pantilimon and Patrick van Aanholt at 5.0 apiece – will give Fantasy managers food for thought as we eye up a route into a defence that managed 13 clean sheets (six home, seven away) last season, the same number as Arsenal.

Granted, Van Aanholt ranked fourth amongst defenders in terms of shots (30) and fourth for key passes (35) in 2014/15 and is nailed on by comparison, whilst Pantilimon (who earned 4.4 points per appearance last time out) is set to benefit from a change to the BPS scoring, which should boost his chances of Bonus Points through saved shots. Both have the potential to still prove better value for money.

For now, those who are looking to spend only 4.5 on the Black Cats’ backline may be best opting for fellow new boy Coates or skipper John O’Shea. Coates started each of the last six alongside the Irishman last season and is favourite to get the nod ahead of the injury-plagued Wes Brown. Furthermore, a BPS change on clearances, blocks and interceptions should prove beneficial to centre-halves’ chances of earning Bonus.

Looking at the season ticker, the Black Cats’ schedule is rated second most favourable over the opening ten Gameweeks. With just two clashes against last term’s top seven over that period (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou, mun, WHM, wba, NEW), there’s every chance they could begin the campaign strongly.

    Players to Embrace this season
Ings( Especially if Sturridge out for long and much better value than Firmino)
    Fabregas
    Di Maria(8.5...seriously!!)
    Mata
    Gomis
Rooney(If Manutd surprisingly doesnt sign any1 else)
Downing(For 1st half of season only :p but still 6mn is way too good)

I mean Kane Peaked at 6million in GW 38...Same club and 9.5million is way too much sorry...but Ings although 2million more is playing at a top 4 contesting side now

Kane finished at 6m last season because he started so cheap, the important thing is how many points he scored, not his price. If he continues scoring at the rate he did last season (or even relatively close to that) he is still easily worth 9.5m.

I agree. Kane and Mane might have gone up in price, but for good reason.
Normally to get a young striker whose off the back of a 20 goal 200 point campaign, your guaranteed to have a double figure price. Kane still nailed on for a top 6 club and will be getting more experienced and improving for 5 years yet

        a) Toby jug: A beer jug or mug in the form of a stout old man wearing a three-cornered hat.

        b) Toby carvery: The self-proclaimed 'Home of the Roast'.

        c) Toby Alderweireld: Tobias Albertine Maurits "Toby" Alderweireld, a Belgian professional footballer who plays for Tottenham Hotspur and the Belgium national team.

    Right, here's Draft #235,423

    Cech
    Ivanovic - Cédric - Morgan
    Hazard - Mata - Ramsey - Henderson
    Costa - Benteke - Sakho

    Bench: Hamer, Ekstrand, M.Turner, Surman.

Anything glaringly terrible? I'm considering a cheaper keeper and upgrading a defender. I'm not sure if my bench will be getting many minutes...

What's the thoughts on Man United's possible Schweinsteiger deal. Personally I think he's in his twilight years and has been predominantly used as a 60 minute man over the last few years but I guess there is no harm having himself and Carrick holding up the centre.

What do we think will be the impact of Falcao on Costa? Mourinho will not play 2 up top unless chasing a game we know that so gametime will be split. Costa is the main main for sure. However, I doubt Falcao came to Chelsea to warm the bench and doubt Chelsea pay him this huge salary to keep him on the bench. I reckon Mourinho will try to ease him in. I can see some 65-75 minute appearances for Costa at the start of the season giving Falcao 15 or 20 mins every game to gel. This could dent Costa's appeal a bit. Anyone agree?

That is some expensive backup. I don't agree. Like it or not, Falcao must have had some guarantee of gametime. He certainly doesn't believe he is over as a top footballer and will try hard to make a comeback. It is very early to write him off imo. Torres for instance has been given far more time to return to his best and he didn't have a career-ending injury to deal with.

Yep. I also feel that Jose is trying to get LvG look like a fool plus there is the agent aspect to consider.

Maureen does not HAVE to try. Von Bile is a fool. Agents control transactions, but not playing time.

Spot on about LvG but that does not mean Jose would not like to stick it to LvG.

With Europa League commitments I doubt there'll be much consistency in selection, which also affects performance too.

Can Silva be worth 10mil? One of the most consistent players over a number of seasons who last year reached new heights as an FPL player. Best attack in the league, he even matched Aguero for long periods. He's a consistent source of points, but do you need to be willing to captain him at that price?

    1. Sánchez
      • 14 Years

Thats my thoughts. I dont trust him as captain. He picks up points regular but not huge hauls enough. For me yaya 8.5 is better option unless pogba arrives

Is YYT not a good option whilst Kun is not fit. Pellegrini will surely play 4-2-3-1 with YYT further forward. Here is my thinking

    Delph-Fernandinho
    Silva-YYT-Navas/Nasir
    Bony

Alright, so i feel like I have built the core of my team. And I feel great!

    --------------------------Cech-----------------
    Fuchs ----- Azpi ----- Richards ----- Cedric
    Mata ---- Payet ----- Depay ---- Fabregas
    --------------------Rooney -- Joselu

    Mignolet --- Clyne -- Ritchie --- Deeny

2.5 ITB. Now, the dilema is trying to fit in Ritchie. I have heard good things about him and Bournemouth have great fixtures. Who should I replace him with? Payet? I think payet will be a huge success.

Also, I feel my attack is sort of weak. Any upgrades? Will troy deeney be this years Charlie Austin, Rickie Lambert,
