After assessing the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we now focus our attentions further up the park.

Prior to our assessment, it’s worth noting the changes to the BPS scoring system this term. The decrease to the BPS for pass completion will hit those players who ply their trade for dominant teams, though in truth, that won’t hurt many budget attacking options hard – the likes of Nemanja Matic and Gareth Barry will be the chief protagonists in the cut-price bracket. There’s also the improved BPS changes for successful tackles, which will certainly benefit Matic, given that he made more (100) than any player in the Premier League last season.

We start off, then, with a look at what’s on offer at 5.0 and under as Fantasy managers scour the market for this year’s George Boyd or Matty Phillips…

Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin is, at the very least, a reliable starter at 4.5. Having been named in the first XI in 19 of the final 20 league fixtures, his defensive qualities afforded the Gunners a better overall balance last term, though given he failed to produce any attacking returns, you’ll be getting three-point returns at best here.

Villa’s new signing Idrissa Gueye has been priced at just 5.0 and boasts a relatively decent scoring record in 2014/15, arriving on the back of four goals and a pair of assists for Lille last term. Charles N’Zogbia and Scott Sinclair also come in at 5.0 but will need to force their way into the starting XI to have any chance of coming into consideration, with Jack Grealish expected to nail down one of the wide roles. Ashley Westwood sets you back 4.5 but with a single assist last term, he offers little prospect of attacking returns. With Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six, though, Tim Sherwood’s side could be ones to monitor.

As mentioned in previous articles, Villa rotate home/away with Midlands neighbours West Brom over the 38 Gameweeks. Baggies skipper Darren Fletcher and Claudio Yacob (4.5 apiece) both started 15 of Tony Pulis’ 18 matches in charge last term and will at least offer security of starts in the centre of the park. Fletcher scored once after arriving at the Hawthorns, whilst James Morrison (5.0), who also started all but three of the fixtures under the new manager, produced two goals and an assist last term. New boy James McClean (5.0) could attract investment if Pulis affords the industrious winger a run of starts on the left flank – he chalked up six goals and seven assists in the previous campaign but faces competition from Callum McManaman (5.0).

Harry Arter could be an option for Championship winners Bournemouth – priced at just 5.0, he bagged nine goals and three assists last time out. Former Norwich man Andrew Surman looks the likeliest starter at 4.5 for the Cherries; despite sitting in the double-pivot, he managed three goals and six assists in 2014/15. Bournemouth have the kindest opening schedule over the first six Gameweeks, according to our season ticker – three strong home encounters (AVL, LEI, SUN) are complemented by a trip to Norwich.

Eddie Howe’s side rotate with fellow new boys Watford over the 38 Gameweeks, though the Hornets are currently undergoing a restructuring programme under Quique Sanchez Flores and it remains to be seen just how many of last season’s regulars will retain a starting role. The likes of Almen Abdi (5.0) racked up nine goals and two assists playing in “the hole”, while Ikechi Anya (4.5) proved to be a fine facilitator on the left flank, amassing seven assists. Etienne Capoue (5.0) and Valon Behrami (4.5) have already been drafted in and look the likely starters in the double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1, though the pair offer little in the way of attacking returns.

As mentioned above, Nemanja Matic looks set to be the chief beneficiary of the new BPS change for successful tackles. Coming in at just 5.0, he’s certainly very budget-friendly but his role in the Chelsea double-pivot produced just a goal and three assists last season – given we can only pick three players per team, few will be willing to turn to the Serbian as a viable option in the centre of the park.

Palace pair Mile Jedinak and James McArthur will set you back 5.0 apiece. The arrival of Yohan Cabaye places question marks over Alan Pardew’s plans in the centre of the park – should Cabaye be fielded in a deep-lying role, one of the duo look poised to miss out if the Eagles boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 set-up.

Everton’s Gareth Barry comes in at just 4.5 and started all but five of last season’s fixtures. Again, though, there’s uncertainty over Roberto Martinez’ intentions with Tom Cleverley adding an extra option in central midfield, whilst Steven Pienaar, Aiden McGeady and Leon Osman look far from certain starters at 5.0.

Claudio Ranieri’s arrival at Leicester may prove a source of frustration for Fantasy managers. Given that “The Tinkerman” is renowned for heavy rotation, the jury is very much out on Leicester’s potential regulars for the season ahead. Marc Albrighton staked a claim for inclusion with some strong displays at the end of last season – the 5.0-priced winger delivered two goals and assists in the Foxes’ concluding quintet of fixtures. The likes of Danny Drinkwater, Dean Hammond and Andy King are all 4.5 but we need to assess pre-season line-ups before considering any of them viable.

Liverpool’s Jordon Ibe is available at just 5.0 and was utilised as a right wing-back on a number of occasions during the latter part of 2014/15. With Brendan Rodgers keen to restructure, though, it remains to be seen whether the youngster can nail down a starting berth – right now, his acquisition looks too risky to justify.

Newcastle’s 5.0-priced Rolando Aarons will be hoping for a breakout season under new manager Steve McClaren. The fleet-footed 19-year-old scored and assisted in his second cameo last term, before succumbing to a hamstring injury that restricted him to two further appearances. Aarons has looked sharp in the close season, netting for the England U20s, though the arrival of new boy Georginio Wijnaldum could well restrict his pitch time.

Norwich ‘s Jonny Howson is available for 5.0 and produced nine goals and six assists from the centre of the park in the Championship last term. Wes Hoolahan (5.0) bagged five goals and ten assists, takes the majority of Norwich’s penalties and shares dead-ball duties with Nathan Redmond, though he’s less secure a starter – ten of his 39 appearances came off the bench. Graham Dorrans made 18 appearances (13 starts, five as a sub) after arriving at Carrow Road midway thorough last season. The former West Brom man – priced at 5.0 – bagged three goals and an assist and his top-flight experience could be key to the Canaries’ survival bid. Alex Tettey is cheaper at 4.5 but with 13 yellows to his name last year, may be best avoided.

With Morgan Schneiderlin now gone, Victor Wanyama looks a decent squad-filler at a price of just 4.5. The Kenyan struck three times for Southampton last time around, though his role in the double-pivot suggests he may struggle to replicate that goal-getting form, given he mustered just 28 attempts over the course of the previous campaign. Steven Davis (5.0) started 32 times in 2014/15 and although he managed just two assists, still produced 49 key passes for the Saints. Ronald Koeman’s side square up to three of last term’s top seven in the opening 13 rounds of fixtures.

Similarly, Tottenham’s Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason are very budget-friendly options at 4.5 and 5.0 respectively. The duo offer little in the way of attacking output, though – Bentaleb chipped in with a pair of assists in 2014/15, whilst central midfield partner Mason managed a goal and four assists.

Sunderland’s spot-kick taker Jordi Gomez (5.0) had started to find his form under new manager Dick Advocaat before his previous season was ended by injury and could be worth considering if he can nail down a starting berth again. Lee Cattermole comes in at 4.5, though it’s fair to say he is more likely to produce yellow cards than attacking returns. The Black Cats have some very kind opening fixtures and face just three of last season’s top seven in the first 14 Gameweeks.

West Ham new boy Pedro Obiang is available for a cut-priced 5.0 – although he’s noted more for his tough tackling, he notched three times for Sampdoria in Serie A last term. The Hammers have four decent home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks to heighten their initial appeal.

He'll play minimal part. He's on a pay-as-you-play contract for the next 12 months. Most likely to be sold. Wisdom played LB today. I think he's the back up as things stand.

      Enrique is for sale.

9.5 is too much for Kane and Lukaku is a much better pick than Benteke IMO

Kane is expensive, but he is a viable option.

Evertons fixtures are horrible for 10 weeks (minus the first). But I agree, Lukaku is a solid pick.

Benteke avg. almost 0.5 goals per game in PL over 3 seasons (in a team battling relegation). With Sherwood, he will be even more effective. Villa have fairly easy fixtures in the beginning of the season as well.
If he goes to Liverpool, even better.

Aguero and Ritchie together are the same price as Rooney and Yaya.

Quite like the idea of using the latter two as a pair of placeholders in the event that Aguero misses the start of the season.

Then I can make the swap in GW4 - Rooney has swa/LIV/sou, Ritchie has LEI/nor/SUN, I don't miss out on Aguero (C) for WAT/cpl/WHM, and Yaya is a great option when Kun is out due to pens, but not so appealing when he returns.

And if Kun is fit to start the season after all, I just go with Aguero and Ritchie in my original team - both still good picks obviously, and I can leave the rest of my team exactly as I have it, with no wasted efforts or need to do a complete rethink!

Could also do something like Kane and Giroud to Aguero and Wilson.

I think being able to get to Kun in two moves is a pretty sensible plan, however you do it.

Spurs will be Trippier - Alder - Verts - Rose and Walker - Dier - Wimmer - Davies will be the back ups in case of injury although Dier will probably be 1st choice replacement for either CB and may also be used at RB. Yedlin will likely go out on loan, Kaboul and Chiriches will be sold and Fazio will play in the cup games. There won't be much rotation as there are plenty of Europa league and Capital One Cup games to keep them all happy.

              yeah, LvG gambled on Falcao

Welbeck lacks the composure to be a great goalscorer but he'd be very good at bringing others in

Hernandez has no future if we're playing 1 up top, his first touch is dreadful, he's a goalscorer, nothing else, great as part of a front 2

Welbecks speed and strength really troubles defences, something utd are lacking. If they do go for, and get, Lacazette, that will gve them an extra dimension up front. But again he hasnt experienced the premier league, so nothing guaranteed.

I'm not a neutral but I said in my United review article a few weeks ago that I thought United would be the biggest threat to Chelsea this season. I still think so. The new signings don't surprise me at all but they have most definitely improved their team in important areas.

Arsenal have added Cech which is good but Wenger is reluctant to spend as usual. They don't have enough.

City have not strengthened at all as far as I can see. Sterling has potential but is he really better than Nasri right now?

Wenger is not reluctant to spend...He's reluctant to buy players that he doesn't want or doesn't think will make the grade in his team...It's not the same thing.

Look at the money and players brought in last season by some teams....more rubbish than successes for sure....Is that better ?

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 11 Years

          No, that's a fair point.

He errs on the side of having too much faith in his existing players and not being objective enough about weaknesses I think. But that is better than p!ssing all the available cash up the wall like some do. Wenger must be as frustrating as hell for Gooners but at least you can see the rationality of his approach.

We have a decent enough squad that they have to be pretty world class to improve things

Obviously on the Ty rather than Claude side of the argument. 🙂

I'd argue that Arsenal needed a top CB (having lost Vermaelen), a top CM/DM (Coquelin wasn't even in Wenger's plans) and a top STR 12 months ago. And Wenger bought none of them. Instead he bought Sanchez, a great player but in a position they didn't desperately need.

This summer they still need a top CB (don't rate Gabriel), at top CM (Coquelin and Wilshere are not sufficient options) and a top STR. Instead he has bought Cech, a great player but in a position that arguably was adequately covered. Groundhog day anyone?

The biggest blind spot Wenger has is his rating of Giroud. He just isn't high enough calibre for a team that has pretensions to challenging for the PL or going deep in the CL.

Absolutely no chance. They have 1 striker, a poor defence still and a manager that can't make his mind up. He has stacked the mid but that just means that Rooney will end up centre-back by January. They will fight (and probs just beat) Liverpool and City for 3rd whilst the title race is exclusively in London.

I think my reasons were pretty clear. It is an unbiased view and I don't think they are nearly good enough in plenty of key areas. They have by far the weakest CB's of the top 5, the weakest strikeforce in the top 4 (Liverpool are better also when Sturridge is fully fit but that never happens) and they have are likely to have Valdes in net who is probably the worst keeper in the top 4.
Man for man, they are worse than Chelsea in at least 9 out of 11 positions and the manager as well. They will not even be in the conversation by March. Last season they were nowhere near and this season they may have bough 1 full back and some CM's but they have 1 striker and the Champions League to contend with. If LVG thought the injury "crisis" last season was bad he will be having nightmares in a few months.

They have made the best moves and have a really good D core. If Rooney can play up front and grab those goals they could be hard to beat.

I don't think so. They've definitely strengthened, but I reckon they'll be too inconsistent. I'd compare them to Arsenal of last season.

No. Average team average manager. The optimism for this team is strange given how average they were last season. LvGs comments about dropping points on the title after they drew at spurs and then saying they same thing again the week before everton ripped a hole in them were comical.

Performances away to villa and both games against Swansea were absolutely terrible and they only really gained form due to confidence and when that ran out they ended the season nearly as terribly as liverpool did.

Even with the signings i'm still bemused by the optimism. City and arsenal are miles ahead.

Agree with this for the most part. Inconsistency will let them down. They'll have more than a couple of nightmare games again against average teams.

I do think the same about Man City as well though. Arsenal are the only ones who I can see challenging Chelsea for the title.

I am lurking as I try to crunch some stats, and I'm not a neutral, but the one thing that I'll add is that in the modern game, you don't need more than one striker to be a very competitive PL title challenger. Rooney in front of that midfield is all you need to have an awesome attack IMO.

They had supposedly world class strikers last year and it got them nowhere, while Chelsea strolled to the title with Costa, Arsenal looked rampant as Giroud's underrated hold up play let those mids flourish, and City played some of its best when Aguero was alone and the donkeys were in the stable. You can't go without one, though, as Liverpool showed us.

To be a serious CL challenger, yes you need more, but not necessarily for the league.

No. Chelsea had Remy winning crucial games, as did Drogba. You can't rely on one striker for 38 games!

You don't need more than 1 striker in any 1 game, 1 up top is clearly the favoured approach throughout all of the top teams in the world but all it takes is a little injury or knowing Rooney, a moment of ill discipline and suddenly you have 3 games with just James Wilson up front or maybe even Depay having a go. Chelsea had Remy and Drogba who won them crucial points (also if United had Hazard it might e a different conversation) whilst Arsenal had Welbz backing up Giroud.

Very much a neutral here: I highly doubt it. I think its most likely the will be competing for 3rd with City.

Then again anything is possible, but speaking rationally i see very little reason to suppose they will be able to challenge.

I think so. Certainly got the manager, players with experience and some great new signings. There midfield has the potential to be very strong, linking up with attack and protecting the back line. This is something they missed last season. If winning the title is part of LVG's 'philosophies' then there is no reason why not.

Bringing in Otamendi and Benzema wouldn't half make the job easier though. At least ditching Tom Cleverley already helped somewhat.

As a liverpool fan I'm really happy with the fee we got for sterling ...but I can see him doing really well at city. possibly becoming a world class winger... but never a top finisher imo. I really hope jordan ibe gets more opertunities in his prefer position this season. Can you really see sterling flopping with that much quality around him?! He's close to nailed on for that fee surely
