We roll out the penultimate article in our assessment of this year’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this evening, After casting an eye over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders, Premium Defenders, Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders, Premium Midfielders and
Budget Forwards, we analyse the available options in the mid-price bracket up front.

Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck carries a 7.5 price tag after scoring just four times in 25 appearances in his debut season at the Emirates. With Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott surely ahead of him in the pecking order for the lone striker role, in addition to fierce competition for the attacking midfield slots, the England international may not see enough playing time to be regarded as a genuine Fantasy prospect. Welbeck is also a slight doubt for the start of the new season with a knee injury that has taken longer to heal than expected.

Chelsea pair Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao have both been priced at 7.5, though their pitch time is likely to be determined by Diego Costa’s ability to remain free from injury and suspension. Bearing in mind that Costa was restricted to just 24 starts last term, there’s certainly a chance that at least one of the pair will benefit at some point, though for now, neither looks worth gambling over, given how precious our three striker slots are. Remy could be worth considering if a mooted move to Palace or West Ham transpires, though.

Despite what was a pretty disappointing campaign last year, Romelu Lukaku appears to be one of the stronger options in the mid-price bracket. The Belgian international comes in at 8.0 this season and may benefit from only having the Premier League to focus on, having played a major role in Everton’s Europa League campaign last term. His goal conversion rate of 9.5% is a concern, however, while the Toffees tough opening schedule mean it’s only when the fixtures ease from Gameweek 11 that he may begin to feature on our radars. Nonetheless, Lukaku looks a secure option – he started 32 times last term, a tally bettered by only four other forwards, whilst he’s now scored at least ten times in all three of his seasons in the top-flight.

Over on the red half of Merseyside, summer signing Danny Ings and Mario Balotelli have been valued at 7.5 and 7.0 respectively. With Daniel Sturridge ruled out for the opening part of the season, it remains to be seen who Brendan Rodgers will opt for up front, though, after the Reds triggered Christian Benteke’s release clause at Villa. Owned by over 14% of FPL managers, Ings was fielded on the right of a front three in Liverpool’s previous friendly but with Rodgers full of options in the final third, he looks far from certain to lead the line in the season ahead. After a disappointing first year at Anfield, Balotelli looks set for the exit door if the Reds can find a buyer.

Another two forwards that could be set to leave the Premier League are Manchester City duo Edin Dzeko (7.5) and Stevan Jovetic (7.0). The Bosnian striker has been linked with a move to Roma, while former Fiorentina man Jovetic could also be set for a return to Serie A. Both look to be behind Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony in the pecking order, while latest addition Raheem Sterling can also play in various roles across the forward line. Even if Dzeko or Jovetic don’t depart this summer, it is very unlikely either will be viable Fantasy options in the forthcoming campaign.

In just 22 appearances last season, Papiss Cisse (6.5) managed to score 11 times and ended the campaign with a goal conversation rate of 24.4%, second only to Diego Costa’s 26.3%. New boss Steve McClaren utilised a 4-3-3 at Derby last year and has rolled out a 4-2-3-1 system in both matches in charges so far, suggesting a lone striker formation will be favoured. Bearing in mind that the Magpies have been heavily linked with moves for Aleksandar Mitrovic and Charlie Austin, there are still question marks over whether the injury-prone Cisse can remain at the top of the pecking order.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez are valued at 8.0 and 7.0 respectively this year and both could provide decent options over the course of the season. Despite a disappointing second half of the 2014/15 campaign, which saw him go on a 14-match scoreless run, Pelle started 37 times last term, more than any other forward, and his physical attributes as a target man should ensure he remains Ronald Koeman’s preferred choice as the lone striker. The more versatile Rodriguez still offers an option on the flanks and, after finally recovering from a year-long knee injury, will be hoping to rediscover the form that saw him net 15 times during 2013/14. Certainly, the Saints’ opening schedule, which pits them against just three of last term’s top three in the first 13 Gameweeks, could barely be kinder and both forwards are already off the mark – Rodriguez has notched twice, whilst Pelle netted in a friendly win over Groningen earlier today.

Coming in at 6.5, fellow Senegal international Mame Biram Diouf is the only Stoke forward in the mid-price category. After scoring 12 goals in the previous campaign, the former United man could be decent value if he can stave off the challenge of new signing Joselu for a starting berth as the lone striker in Mark Hughes’s 4-2-3-1. In terms of goal conversion, Diouf’s 21.4% was fourth among all forwards last year, though his versatility can go against him, with the Potters boss handing him a right flank berth on a number of occasions.

Following Wilfried Bony’s January move to City, it took Bafetimbi Gomis some time to find his best form at Swansea. The France international seemed to improve week-by-week throughout the second half of last season, though, and scored six of his seven goals in his final ten appearances. Now the clear first-choice at the Liberty, with summer signing Eder seemingly offering back-up, Gomis should thrive with the likes of Andre Ayew and Gylfi Sigurdsson providing support from midfield. Available at 7.0, the former Lyon forward – who notched against the likes of Arsenal and City last season – looks one of the more appealing and potentially most consistent options in the mid-price roster. He’s also off the mark this summer, finding the net in a 2-1 win over 1860 Munich earlier tonight.

Saido Berahino was one of last season’s success stories in the budget bracket. After scoring 14 goals, the England U21 has been handed a price hike this time around, though still sets us back a respectable 6.5. The Baggies didn’t create an awful lot of chances last season, ranking 19th out of all 20 Premier League sides for attempts on goal, with more of our Fantasy focus on their reliable defence under Tony Pulis. Nonetheless, a goal conversion rate of 16.3% illustrates how clinical the youngster is in front of goal, though, and after some difficult opening fixtures, spot-kick taker Berahino could provide a viable option as a third forward. The Baggies striker netted in his first appearance of the summer in a friendly win over Charleston Battery earlier this morning.

One of the other stand-out names in this price range is West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, who comes in at 6.5. In an injury-hit campaign that restricted him to 23 appearances, Sakho still netted every 184.1 minutes – that’s sandwiched between Charlie Austin (178.9) and Christian Benteke (192.8), for example. Providing he can steer clear of the treatment room, he should benefit from an attack-minded approach under Slaven Bilic and has four very favourable home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks. With Andy Carroll (6.5) now expected to be out until mid-October due to an ongoing knee injury, Sakho’s eye for goal could be key to ensuring Bilic’s tenure gets off to a profitable start.

What do people reckon of Giroud? I really like this idea -

    Haz Chadli Hendo Sterling
    Rooney Giroud Deeney

    Rather than my current

    Haz Ozil Richie Sterling
    Rooney Sakho Deeney

That is young when you are comparing him to players in their prime such as Mata and Ozil. Players that have years of experience playing in the PL and in other leagues around the world.

He is new to the league and will need time to adjust to the rigours of the PL. LVG has said as much.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one.

I started with Hazard when he first turned up at Chelsea, around the same age as Depay, maybe even younger.
He hit the ground running, no reason why Depay cannot do the same

I hope you are right. Depay is a great price if nailed on but I fear LVG's filoshofee won't throw him in the deep end straight away.

Well balanced, For defence you picked the right players from each team imo (except possibly Morgan to Huth as the former played in Gold Cup)

Midfield is similarly balanced to mine, personally wouldn't double up on Arsenal mids

Forwards are good if you're comfortable playing Deeney every week

Benteke's going to be absolute gold dust if he arrives at Liverpool, right? If Sturridge can be used as some kind of comparative gauge, he'll be around £2m under valued up there. Also, it doesn't matter a f**k if he takes the penalties or not - he only scored one last season!

No 4m defenders are regular starters this year so in theory you have picked a 13 man squad. Sunderland defence is hard to predict at the moment so you will almost certainly need at least 4 playing defenders. You get an injury and your going to be in all sorts of trouble with at least 3 defenders having to be played every week to get any subs off your bench. I would be tempted to downgrade one of Ivan/Walcott/Cazorla

      How much is Jrod

      1. Spectrum-FFS Doubles Champ

Yes he will be nailed on but is a poor pick as he is more of a defensive midfielder so assists and goals won't happen very often. In summary good player but not good for fantasy football

    2. El Tel

Slightly weak defence. JRod > Sakho/Deeney etc and spend a little more in the DEF

I like the Schneiderlin selection, and I'm surprised not to have seen him in more RMTs. I'm staying away from Sunderland's defense given how things have looked in the pre-season. I prefer Chadli, but understand the appeal of Henderson, and totally agree with the recommendation to forgo JRod for one of the other budget strikers (I like Sakho).

Okay so i got Sakho, and now what about my defense? (O'Shea/ Morgan/ Cedric/ Ogbonna/ Williams) + 0,5m . I'm thinking of replacing O'Shea with Janmaat or Lescott. Any ideas?

        1. Birdman Transfer
          • 12 Years

Morgan may or may not be available to start the season, he's still playing with Jamaica in the Gold Cup and will probably need some recuperation time afterwards.

What I've done is go with Schlupp for my Leicester defender, who seems likely to be playing OOP at LM again this year. If you did that you'd have 4.5m to replace O'Shea.

Williams is the other 5m def I like a lot, but you already have him. Lescott could be a good option, but they have several tough fixtures early on.

  16. Birdman Transfer

Starting to really consider a heavy midfield designed to play 3-5-2 more often than not. Assuming a reasonably cheap defense (£33m all in with GKs), how does this look:

    Alexis / Fab / Silva / Mane / Chadli
    Rooney / Sakho (Jerome)

Week 1 I would likely start out with someone like Yaya in place of Alexis until he returns to the lineup (perhaps as soon as Week 2). Then at some point in the future generate the funds to upgrade Rooney > Aguero by downgrading a mid, maybe Silva > Siggy or Mane > Ki.

That isn't settled though, is it? I know RvW has been playing with them in pre-season, but Norwich could still loan or sell him to Lisbon at this point.

Ultimately, this setup requires a third striker no more expensive than £5m, and I'm not sure if there's a better option than Jerome, even if he's not assured starts.

This is where I think your strategy falls over. You are right there are limited options in the 5m striker category. In much the same way as there are limited options in the 4m defender category, none are nailed on.

    Ivan Kos Morgan Francis Prödl
    Hazard Cazorla Özil Henderson Wanyama
    Aguero Sakho Deeney
Happy with mids but how about Sakho-Deeney, should I worry or chill?

Swap Cazorla for a mid price midfielder to boost forwards

Sahko & Deeney aren't a good pairing imo. One or other.
For me, I'd Haz > Fab or downgrade Ivan.

Anyone else starting with Mane for first weeks with 0.5 ITB and waiting to see which 8.5 is worth buying

          Costa - Rooney - Ighalo

You both make good points. But what you could do, perhaps, is start with both Mane & Coutinho and keep 0.5m back. I'd say Saints & Pool each have 4 good fixtures in the first 7; so you could react quickly to bring in an 8.5m mid for whoever gets off to the slowest start, and keep the other.

        Hey Champ,

You backing Mane again? No place for him in my current draft but concerned that could be a mistake 🙁

    Evening/Morning all!

Would love your thoughts on both my player selection and whether to opt for the 352 or 343 below -

    DeGea (4.0)
    Azpilicueta Cedric Matthews (Williams 4.0)
    OZIL Walcott Fabregas Depay Milner
    Aguero Wilson (DEENEY)

    DeGea (4.0)
    Azpilicueta Cedric Matthews (Williams 4.0)
    Walcott Fabregas Depay Milner (WANYAMA)
    KANE Aguero Wilson/Deeney

    - CAPS indicates the difference in players between the two.

So either Ozil or Kane essentially? Ozil if it was a straight decision but you have to remember that if a premium striker hits form it will cost you an extra transfer to generate funds

That is a very good point, and one I had neglected. Thank you for bringing it up. Worth the risk?

Not for me. I love 3-5-2 but it's a big gamble especially with a number of premium and mid-price forwards looking good. For 3-5-2 you need a couple of cheap players going crazy like Ramsey, Michu, Fellaini, Siggy etc.

Or, I reckon, a surplus of good mid-high priced midfielders. All the 8.5s combined with Milner/Hendo/Chadli at 7 and a couple of 9-10s gives us a huge amount of choice in the middle, and all of it affordable as well.

Per million, midfielders generally outscore strikers. If you find the right ones I reckon it can pay off handsomely. Later in the season, when budgets allow, a shift to two big hitters and a throw away up front, whilst maintaining the strong 5 man middle, could add to this.

Swap out De gea and the 4.0 for Butland and Ruddy
And definitely don't have Wilson and Deeney

I had another draft with those keepers, but with funds available I fancy DeGea (or another 5.5) for the long term. Wilson and Deeney would rotate (they home/away perfectly, obviously would pay attention to fixture difficulty too), and I reckon one of them could do an Austin/Ings, having both means I get onboard with that and drop the other.

With Forwards imo rotation is not so important and who else do u expect to buy when one doesnt produce?

Well that either means a shift to the 343 or if one proves to be properly consistent at that price (Kane last year) an upgrade in midfield.

Wilson & Deeney rotate well, out of the choices I'd go 3-5-2.

You actually might be the first person to go for the 352. I'm relieved someone has! I really like it. I think at first glance it looks weak, but it really does cover so many bases excellently.

I'm pretty keen on 3-5-2 and reckon that'll be my tactic but still early days.

I've been 343 for the last couple of seasons, but do have a soft spot for 352.

If the right players/prices are around I reckon it should yield more points, as midfielders have more point scoring opportunities available to them. The only issue is when a couple of expensive strikers start scoring, as with the last few seasons, 343 becomes the more obvious choice.

The days of Gerrard, Lampard, Ronaldo and Fabregas were all about the 352. I added Jimmy Bullard to them and it was great.

There will be some great value coming out of the mids under 6m just a question of who - I'm backing Johnson (Nor) but maybe Anya, Fletch, Sanchez or other at 4.5m will fill that slot.
I'm using the Ivan saving to upgrade Deeney to Benteke but that could be Giroud or Pelle.

What are we thinking RE Hendo v Milner? I'm going with two 7.0s to allow for Rooney and Aguero, and I'm set on Chadli as the first.

      Milner for me.

He had more threat than Henderson when he was only a bit part player at City and Hendo was captaining Liverpool. Rogers has given assurances Milner will be 100% nailed in the CM role this season. Las time he played that position was in his final season at Villa (look up his stats); he is now in a better team and will make a mockery of his price.
Although only preseason, Milner already made good on the above reasoning with a goal and assist the other day.
The only concern is Henderson takes penalties.
