Earlier this month, Swansea manager Garry Monk bolstered his attacking options with the capture of Braga centre-forward Eder on a three-year deal. Having plied his trade in the Primeira Liga for the past six seasons, the Portuguese striker was delighted to finally make the switch to the Liberty, after first arriving on the Swans’ radar back in 2012, when Michael Laudrup was in charge:

“I am very happy to have signed with Swansea. It’s a big club and I believe I can progress as a footballer here. The Premier League will be a step up for me, but I’ve played in the European competitions and also for my country so I’ve experienced different levels of the game. Hopefully my team-mates will help me develop and settle in quickly at the club. I can’t wait to meet all of them when I report for pre-season training. Swansea are a solid club who have big ambitions – last season confirmed that – and it’s great for me to be a part of it.”

The History

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Eder emigrated to Portugal at a young age and begun his footballing career at ADC Ademia. The six-foot-three-inch forward earned his senior debut for third-division Portuguese outfit Oliverira Hospital, producing seven goals in 23 appearances before switching to fellow third division club Tourizense, where he amassed 10 goals in 34 outings the following season.

Having cut his teeth in the lower leagues, Eder’s first taste of top-flight football arrived following a move to Academica. Throughout his four seasons with the Primeira Liga side, Eder carded 12 goals and nine assists in 83 league outings and also contributed to Academica’s first Portuguese Cup win since 1939, courtesy of a win over Sporting Lisbon.

Braga then snapped up the Portugal international in the summer of 2012 on a four-year deal. Eder’s first season with Os Arcebispos (The Archbishops) was curtailed by injury when he suffered ligament damage in February. Nonetheless, he still managed to tally an impressive 13 goals and three assists in just 18 league appearances.

Eder made just ten starts the following campaign, registering three goals and two assists. The past season saw the rangy forward handed the most pitch time since his transfer to Braga, harvesting 10 goals and one assist in 28 appearances. In all, Eder notched 26 goals and six assists in 59 league outings during his stay at the Municipal Stadium.

On the international front, Eder made his full debut for Portugal during a 2014 World Cup qualifier back in August 2012. His solitary goal for A Seleccao arrived in a friendly against Italy in June 2015.

The Prospects

Given that Swans boss Garry Monk primarily favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation last term, there doesn’t appear to be a natural role for Eder to fill. Bafetimbi Gomis is sure to retain his lone striker berth – having bagged five goals in his last six appearances of the campaign – while Gylfi Sigurdsson cemented the number ten spot with seven goals and ten assists in the season gone by. On the flanks, new boy Andre Ayew will likely be deployed in his favoured role on the left, while Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge are able servants on either wing.

Having been fielded as a centre-forward in every league appearance he made last season, Eder should serve as a back-up to Gomis in a one-striker formation – particularly when Monk has already referred to Eder as “competition” for the former Lyon frontman:

“Eder is the type of striker we’ve been looking for. He has excellent attributes; strong, quick and technically sound with the ball. He has a good pedigree and is a full international with Portugal. He fits our profile in terms of the players we’ve signed in the last two seasons because he’s young, hungry and eager to prove himself in the Premier League. He has the characteristics we are looking for and will certainly add competition to the striking department. I’m looking forward to seeing him work alongside the likes of Bafe (Gomis) and Marvin (Emnes). And the fact that we’ve got him in early is a bonus.”

Last year, however, Monk adopted a 4-3-1-2 formation on a handful of occasions, and a return to such a system would allow the Portuguese marksman to possibly earn starts in a two-man attack. That being said, Ayew also possess the skill set to partner Gomis up top and could be considered a better foil to the Frenchman in light of his propensity for making runs in behind.

Save for developments in pre-season that suggest he can establish a starting role, Eder – priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game – looks like one to steer clear of in the early stages. Currently, Sigurdsson and Ki Sung-yeung are the most popular outfield options for the Swans; both currently sit in 9.1% of teams, with the latter’s eight strikes and 5.5 price tag making him one of the stand-out options in the sub-6.0 midfield bracket. Gomis, meanwhile, is available for only 7.0, and having netted against the likes of Arsenal and City last season, has already highlighted his fixture-proof appeal.

The Swans kick off the 2015/16 campaign with a trip to champions Chelsea, before hosting Manchester United in Gameweek 4. Mercifully, the Welsh club’s other four fixtures (NEW, sun, wat, EVE ) in their opening half-dozen look to be more fertile grounds for their attacking contingent. For now, though, it seems Eder’s time may be restricted to minutes off the bench unless Monk switches systems in order to accommodate a two-man frontline.

For me, this is effectively lowering my budget for my starting 11 by 1m this season as an advocate for Moore, Hutton, Wisdom, Duff of yesteryear.

That's of course superseded by your rule so 2x4.5s it is.

Difference is is that those players played. Therefore they were ok according to the golden rule of FF.

Yeah, that's why it's 2 x 4.5s and therefore 1m less on the playing budget.

Targett, but that's only till Bertrand is back.

Safer to start with 4.5s, and keep an eye out for a seemingly nailed on 4.0 as the season progresses.

The more I think of it, the more I'm losing interest in the 8.5 - 9.0 midfielder range

Ozil/Cazorla/Ramsey - double points hauls are rare from them, would never captain, and picking the right one is a minefield

Mata/Depay - nailed on ? How will memphis settle into the PL?

Sterling / Yaya - would rather wait and watch, and tricky fixtures

Fabregas - hazard is a better captaincy option, and much more dangerous with ownership

The only one I'd really want to start GW1 with is Walcott, to give a mid that looks like :

    Haz Wally 7.0 6.0 4.5

Cazorla/Walcott is the decision.. No chance Ozil/Ramsey will get ahead of them in my team.. United & City will have to wait and see but I think Silva could pick up where he left off

      Hazard is a must

As 50%+ have him, if you don't and he gets a big score it can seriously hurt your rank

So looks like Hazard is owned by 50% of FPL managers at the moment, and one would guess that atleast half of them will captain him for the gw1 home fixture against swans.

Basically if he scores a brace in that game and you don't have him, rest assured your rank will be somewhere in the 2 million range. Plus you will have to take a hit to get him in unless you have Silva.

        1. QGOONER
          • 10 Years
          10 years, 4 months ago

Yeah I figured. Now if he produces nothing which the stats from last year says he could, (Didn't produce a single goal or assist against Swansea or in the season open against Burnley) his price would drop, hopefully, significantly. Btw he also never scored more than one goal last year.

Agree that this could definitely happen, but then the downgrade to Fabregas is easy with 1 FT (if required), plus there wouldnt be significant damage to your rank since over half of FPL managers will be in the same boat..

Valid points but even with these negatives most if not all of these 8.5m mids should still score well and better than most cheapies who are even more of a risk.

That being said I can see the allure of a decent cheap mid alright.

Any good idea to just play Azp, Kos & Cedric the first 4 GWs? (Then WC)
I mean, they all got great CS possibilities no matter who they play right?

Then I can free up funds for upgrading Mid/Attack, or have funds to do Costa -> Aguero for GW4.

Targett and Baker are concerns. Targett at least should be a starter till Bert is back, Baker may not start at all - nothing worse than a 3.9 non-starter sitting in your squad.

I would put Depay on your watchlist rather than starting with him.

Oof, that's a massive front three.

Wouldn't start with Kun - he may start the season on the bench, and dunno if he'll go berserk in the first 3.

    Any suggestions for this lot?

    Myhill Boruc
    Ivanovic Lescott Reid O'Shea Huth
    Silva Walcott Mane Ritchie Anya
    Costa Rooney CWilson

    Rationale:
    - Double up on WBA def for Pulis effect (won't play both every wk). Ivanovic + 4 well-rotating defs.
    - No Hazard for now, would rather have Costa versus Swansea.
    - Costa/Rooney to Aguero in GW4, will also have to downgrade worst performer.
    - Wilson over Deeney for the first 6wks due to much better attacking fixtures for Bou.

    Any UFPL articles coming out?

Anyone here doing it and got tactics sorted?

I'm wondering whether to split assets such as one player from each top squad or mixing is best? Aguero and Silva sit top in both their cats for PPG which could be difficult to leave out? Costa scores more PPG than Hazard is he the way to go?

My Europa assets are pretty sorted

    Mignolet Henderson or Benteke
    Toby Chadli
    Cedric Mane
    Jenkinson Payet or Sakho

My initial draft had Aguero and Hazard but no Costa or Silva. However, I don't really know what I'm doing so I'm hardly someone you should go to for UFPL advice. It does look fun though, if a little time consuming selecting your squad 🙂

        I also had Hazard Aguero

It's 6 points a goal no matter what position so Costa is up there with Hazard, could even double double up but takes away a lot of money and always good to have coverage in this game 🙂

How many non-playing 4.0's are you having?

You're probably not ever going to play more than 4 defenders so with 8 defenders and mids plus 6 strikers you'd want at least 4 players who may never see the light of day just to make selection easier!

    Nutjob idea #9867

    Starting with 3 Arse mids

    - In a flexible price bracket — see what Yaya and Sterling (and Silva) offer in their first couple of difficult fixtures), MUN unknown with Depay and Mata, Fabregas has mci GW2
    - Playing scintillating atm — WHM and cpa aren't the easiest of fixtures but we know what they're capable of
    - Defensive points coverage

If Arsenal signs a world class striker..let's say Benzema...Will you ditch your Arsenal Mids for him?

      Not for me.

      Dislike:

Kompany (why not Arsenal with better fixtures + he's injury prone)
Morgan (might not start the first games due to... Can't remember why)
      Ki (nah)
      Bolasie (risky and hard fixtures)
Redmond and Ulloa (don't like rotating attack/mid, if that's your strategy)
Kane (not sure, can prove to be a good choice)

Gold cup will be wrapped up by 27th July, 25th for Jamaica if USA beat them in the semis and they play the 3rd place playoff.

Surely thats plenty of time to get back to training with Leicester?

Good overall but consider downgrading one of the front eight, don't rotate attacking players.

Alright, lads - your opinion please:

    1. Milner - good price for a starter playing attacking central role for a top-7 side, or waste of 7m, when I could buy a cheaper mid and upgrade a def to Ivanovic?

    2. Grioud or benteke?

    3. are sanchez and kun simply too expensive? glad I dodged the RVP and toure -sized bullets last season. do must-haves ever perform the next season AND provide pound for pound value (except maybe rooney)?

    cheers

      1. Milner and Hendo are best option from mid price midfielders. For some reason I'm expecting Milner to play more advanced and should have fare share of set pieces.

      2. Benteke - nailed to start atleast until Sturridge is fit

      3. Sanchez is imo. His form dipped when Özil,Cazorla and Ramsey started along with him. Aguero ppg was something like 8.1 so hes defo worth that price tag but maybe from gw4 onwards.

Who cud prove to be better?
      Deeney or Wilson?

      And

Is it worth having Benteke, Milner in the team. (I hav Sakho(LPool) already in defense)?

Wilson just gets the edge for me in terms of skill but Deeney is Watfords goal threat, while Bournemouth have Ritchie who's the star man for me..

Ritchie from Bournemouth and Deeney from Watford is how i'm going about it.. Defeinitely.

Not worth Benteke + Milner not imo

Haven't done an RMT in a while. Here goes:

    Ruddy (Rudd)
    Darmian Williams (Huth) Ogbonna (Francis)
    Silva Ozil Mane Ritchie (Anya)
    Costa Rooney Deeney

3.0 ITB for Rooney to Kun and Ozil to Fab/Sterling depending on who starts well.

      Personally I don't like the Ruddy/Rudd choice.
Darmian - might be rotated - better stay off IMO.
Defence OK - but would get a "big hitter" in?
Ritchie AND Deeney too much IMO.
      Cheers.

I've decided to give up on creating a balanced team, and instead plan a team entirely for the first 3 gameweeks, then Wildcard for gameweek 4.
    I usually play my WC early on, and this season with the rule changes I think there is even more reason for it. Advantages are;

    - Time to see which players, particularly from newly promoted teams, are best value.
    - No real need to worry about Aguero yet*
    - simplifies choice based mainly around ARS, MUN, SOU

*If he looks like starting GW1, will tinker to accommodate

    Anybody else thinking the same?

        3 x ARS, 2 x SOU & MUN, some SUN, Scmeichel & Ivan

Many are doing this. I won't be, because three weeks is not enough time for me to assess correctly. This doesn't necessarily apply to everyone.

I agree that is the danger, but I pretty much always end up wildcarding around GW4 and have never regretted it, and I really think this season it's the way to go.

I knew it was a trick question 😉
Well, because if you select a team specifically for 3 weeks of fixtures, they may do well in those weeks, but a different team set up would do better afterwards

Hehe. Well don't be surprised if you go back on your idea of wild carding. Its actually a good tactic to plan in weeks of 3. Transfers can keep you up to date.

It could be the correct tactic to use actually, as earlier on the season you are less likely to get...

postponements, dgws, a raft of injured players and so that the WC may come in handy for.

Not sure what I will do.

I think just play, and then maybe hold the first WC until something 'crops up' which no doubt it will 🙂

Any love for Defoe at 5.5m?

Given sunderlands opening fixtures, most templates have deeney/wilson
but im thinking with the addition or Lens and giacheireni back in the picture he may get some better service to boost his returns

Anyone want to punt on Agbonlahor at 5m? should adebayor not sign?

I think defoe is a good choice. Lacks pens which is why people are looking elsewhere but excellent set of fixtures and proven 8.0 striker when in form

Lens will probably shoot himself rather than passing. Defoe is also not nailed. I'd rather have Bojan or one of the promoted nailed strikers
