Earlier this month, Swansea manager Garry Monk bolstered his attacking options with the capture of Braga centre-forward Eder on a three-year deal. Having plied his trade in the Primeira Liga for the past six seasons, the Portuguese striker was delighted to finally make the switch to the Liberty, after first arriving on the Swans’ radar back in 2012, when Michael Laudrup was in charge:

“I am very happy to have signed with Swansea. It’s a big club and I believe I can progress as a footballer here. The Premier League will be a step up for me, but I’ve played in the European competitions and also for my country so I’ve experienced different levels of the game. Hopefully my team-mates will help me develop and settle in quickly at the club. I can’t wait to meet all of them when I report for pre-season training. Swansea are a solid club who have big ambitions – last season confirmed that – and it’s great for me to be a part of it.”

The History

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Eder emigrated to Portugal at a young age and begun his footballing career at ADC Ademia. The six-foot-three-inch forward earned his senior debut for third-division Portuguese outfit Oliverira Hospital, producing seven goals in 23 appearances before switching to fellow third division club Tourizense, where he amassed 10 goals in 34 outings the following season.

Having cut his teeth in the lower leagues, Eder’s first taste of top-flight football arrived following a move to Academica. Throughout his four seasons with the Primeira Liga side, Eder carded 12 goals and nine assists in 83 league outings and also contributed to Academica’s first Portuguese Cup win since 1939, courtesy of a win over Sporting Lisbon.

Braga then snapped up the Portugal international in the summer of 2012 on a four-year deal. Eder’s first season with Os Arcebispos (The Archbishops) was curtailed by injury when he suffered ligament damage in February. Nonetheless, he still managed to tally an impressive 13 goals and three assists in just 18 league appearances.

Eder made just ten starts the following campaign, registering three goals and two assists. The past season saw the rangy forward handed the most pitch time since his transfer to Braga, harvesting 10 goals and one assist in 28 appearances. In all, Eder notched 26 goals and six assists in 59 league outings during his stay at the Municipal Stadium.

On the international front, Eder made his full debut for Portugal during a 2014 World Cup qualifier back in August 2012. His solitary goal for A Seleccao arrived in a friendly against Italy in June 2015.

The Prospects

Given that Swans boss Garry Monk primarily favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation last term, there doesn’t appear to be a natural role for Eder to fill. Bafetimbi Gomis is sure to retain his lone striker berth – having bagged five goals in his last six appearances of the campaign – while Gylfi Sigurdsson cemented the number ten spot with seven goals and ten assists in the season gone by. On the flanks, new boy Andre Ayew will likely be deployed in his favoured role on the left, while Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge are able servants on either wing.

Having been fielded as a centre-forward in every league appearance he made last season, Eder should serve as a back-up to Gomis in a one-striker formation – particularly when Monk has already referred to Eder as “competition” for the former Lyon frontman:

“Eder is the type of striker we’ve been looking for. He has excellent attributes; strong, quick and technically sound with the ball. He has a good pedigree and is a full international with Portugal. He fits our profile in terms of the players we’ve signed in the last two seasons because he’s young, hungry and eager to prove himself in the Premier League. He has the characteristics we are looking for and will certainly add competition to the striking department. I’m looking forward to seeing him work alongside the likes of Bafe (Gomis) and Marvin (Emnes). And the fact that we’ve got him in early is a bonus.”

Last year, however, Monk adopted a 4-3-1-2 formation on a handful of occasions, and a return to such a system would allow the Portuguese marksman to possibly earn starts in a two-man attack. That being said, Ayew also possess the skill set to partner Gomis up top and could be considered a better foil to the Frenchman in light of his propensity for making runs in behind.

Save for developments in pre-season that suggest he can establish a starting role, Eder – priced at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game – looks like one to steer clear of in the early stages. Currently, Sigurdsson and Ki Sung-yeung are the most popular outfield options for the Swans; both currently sit in 9.1% of teams, with the latter’s eight strikes and 5.5 price tag making him one of the stand-out options in the sub-6.0 midfield bracket. Gomis, meanwhile, is available for only 7.0, and having netted against the likes of Arsenal and City last season, has already highlighted his fixture-proof appeal.

The Swans kick off the 2015/16 campaign with a trip to champions Chelsea, before hosting Manchester United in Gameweek 4. Mercifully, the Welsh club’s other four fixtures (NEW, sun, wat, EVE ) in their opening half-dozen look to be more fertile grounds for their attacking contingent. For now, though, it seems Eder’s time may be restricted to minutes off the bench unless Monk switches systems in order to accommodate a two-man frontline.

lucy out of interest are you touching Southampton's defense? was on cedric, but reckon you get better options for 5 mill and yellow card beast... now thinking targett as looking likely of wildcarding in 4, but if not not sure targett is worth it. give me some southampton wisdom please...

I'm going for Cedric. 2 assists and a goal already in pre-season plus those fixtures means I'll take the gamble. If Lescott had better fixtures, I may have tried him.

I think Targett as it's his natural position, he has PL experience, greater opportunity for development and is left footed.

it occurs to me that ppl just rate teams similar to their own, highly, and those far removed lowly and so what your really getting when some1 rates ur team is whether that person has a team similar to yours or not.
maybe a more useful ask for ppl might be can u suggest an immediate swap of a player(or 2) in this team that u feel would improve it.
it might prove a more useful exercise to all involved.

Not true. I often rate teams highly that are different to my own. For example, some of the ones with Hazards in them.

don't agree. I rate teams different from mine based on what they have, especially when they ask pointed questions on their rationale or to choose an option - even when i don't have either player (or both) with their option

Bored of RMTs? Here's a QUICK QUIZ (no cheating!!!)

    1) Last season, which PL venue was the furthest east?
    2) Name the four players that have scored 20+ goals in a PL season for Arsenal
    3) Who was the first Brazilian player to score a PL hat-trick (for Middlesbrough in 2008)?
    4) Which two American goalkeepers have played for four different clubs in the PL?
    5) Why does Keiren Westwood - Vito Mannone = Alvaro Negredo?

I'd be wary of not having Costa when fit.... You've spent so much on defence! If you're keeping that defence, then not at all silly, but I'd go 3 at the back and spend a bit more elsewhere personally!

The idea was to set up a lasting team.
I am still pondering with the formation though.
Midfield looks settled, but there is a bit of juggling with between defence and attack.

Looking at the rest of your front 8, Deeney is never gonna play, so make him a 4.5 striker if you're going for the 3-5-2, then invest the funds elsewhere, Sterling to Silva maybe, or change one of your defenders to a CHE/ARS one?

Two GKs from a team that won't keep many clean sheets. If you're doing 4.5 and a back up then use a better side.

Everton defenders are a no go with their early fixtures. If you play Ward you're doubling up on Palace defence, see above.

      1. JordanHeald
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 12 months ago

When you say never going to play, do you mean pitch time? I assumed he was Watford's no. 1 striker with 20+ goals last year.
Personally gambling with Sterling over Silva this year, as feel the rewards could be huge with him having competent forwards to pass to this year. But agree on a CHE/ARS defender, we reckon Aspi or Koscielny? Do we reckon Mertesacker will keep his spot this year? Cheap swap for Jags in that case.
        Any better 4.5/4.0 keeper combinations?

That a player faded to the bench is a good indication that he's struggling for optimum fitness. That and his interview in the last week talking about his relief in being for and healthy again.

I'm not doubting he had some fitness issues.

My point still stands though, I think claiming someone is 'pretty nailed on' when they started 24 times out of 33 times in the squad is the only 'sweeping claim'.

Tadic missed 4 matches in December. Then Koeman, start of April:
"I spoke to Dusan and he was struggling a long time with a groin problem and we said, OK, we have to stop now. We can’t continue like this because maybe you have in preseason the same problem for next season.

"It’s going better but going slowly and maybe, yes, (he will be out for the season), but we will see,"

This implies it had been niggling for some time.

                Koeman, end of April:
“He is struggling with some groin problems for *a long time* and we decide now to put him out of the team because he has to recover and be 100 per cent and if not he will struggle next season and we don’t want that.”

Koeman, end of March: 'Dusan had a difficult time with some groin problems... that was difficult for him, but he’s now on the way back.'

                    Koeman, beginning of Feb:
“I think that’s a little bit a problem for Dusan. He had some groin problems, but he played every game. But because we didn’t have Mane, we didn’t have Jay Rodriguez, we didn’t have Sam Gallagher and maybe we forced a little bit Dusan on that time.

“Now the situation is different and that makes a team strong that you have more possibilities and more options as the manager.”

He says he's feeling fit and healthy now - Koeman made the right call, if too late, to withdraw him completely.

I say this fully remembering his 20+ point haul last season, but Tadic doesn't strike me as explosive. Mane on the other hand could very well be. Would rather have Henderson or Milner instead of Tadic, but Mane instead of all of them.

I'm seeing a lot teams going with 2 anchor defenders from the big teams and 3 rotating defenders made up of cheapies, I'm going slightly different but worried as I seem to be the only one doing this, is this such a bad idea ?

    Ivanovic Sakho Jenkison Martin Francis

Ivan playing every week, with 2 of the other 4 at home every week first 8 weeks playing :

    Gw1: CPL AVL
    Gw2: LEI BOU
    Gw3: STO BOU
    Gw4: LEI WHU
    Gw5: NEW BOU
    Gw6: SUN NOR
    Gw7: NOR AVL
    Gw8: LEI WAT

I know Bournmouth and Norwich playing half of those is bit dodgy but for 4.5 with those fixtures and perfectly covering West Ham and Liverpools tough aways I'd say that's good value, plus Jenkinson and Sakho only 5.0 so it wouldn't feel wrong benching, could even stretch Sakho to Clyne too if you have a spare 0.5. I know it's only 8 weeks but that's when the 2nd international break comes round for a WC

      • 12 Years

It's a good idea, I'm doing the same thing! Luis leaving means I'll have Azpi over Ivan though.

If you need to save a bit of money, you can swap Watford in for West Ham, or Stoke in for Liverpool (or even both)!

You can also swap a Southampton defender like Cedric in for Sakho if you prefer.

      1. Frank Black
        • 13 Years

Why would you buy Sakho in the first place? That's the real question.

        1. Jay_
          10 years, 12 months ago

5 mil for tasty homes with a cheap 4.5 to cover the aways, Liverpool were pretty solid defensively back end of last season, saying that I'm no Liverpool expert I will wait and see how pre season goes

WHM/BOU/NOR/AVL in the first seven gameweeks, 5m is cheap enough to rotate, does really well in the BPS, should be nailed on, plays for a good team, etc...

            • 13 Years
            10 years, 12 months ago

Liverpool's defense is always bad at the beginning of the season and Sakho is a really mediocre DF. If you want a Pool DF you should get Skrtel who will benefit even more than last year from the BPS.

If it's good it'll be somewhere on the sidebar anyway so it doesn't matter.

Depends on length really. As you mention article I'd submit it as a community article

Post is as an article. If it does not make the grade then post it as a thread anyway.

Or do what Ruth does and post it here for feedback and then submit as an article to maximise it's exposure 😉

Midfield would be my concern, question marks outside of Hazard and Mane.

Cheers. Too soon for Depay? Sounds like I need a 4.5 5th mid to upgrade the 3rd and 4th

Thank you for the feedback. !aybe I'll revert to Ruddy and Butland, get Cedric back in, get a cheap 5th mid for Grealish.

Who is considering playing without Hazard? If so, who are options that will be good replacements for him?

I'm opting to not start him, so I have extra £ and can balance the midfield and attack more.

Hazard is so expensive that you can't consider him on his own. The question is can Hazard and a 7.0 mid score more than two 8.5 mids...something like that anyway depending upon where you use the money....
