With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

    RMT, please:

Schmeichel - Schwarzer (decent early fixtures and more BPs for saves now)
Williams - Cedric - O'Shea - Huth - Francis (no CHE or ARS cover, but they rotate fairly well)
    Hazard - Sterling - Ozil - Mane - Wanyama
    Rooney - Kane - Sakho

I figure I will see which of Sterling, Mane and Ozil fare worst early on and downgrade that one to get Aguero in. Also will allow Benteke to get his feet before drafting in for Kane.

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Cheers!

Defense seems very weak without at least one premium, attack looks good though

Yeah, what do you think about Sakho > Deeney to free up 1.0 to upgrade Cedric to Azpi?

Not sure about Deeney, but maybe Mane>Milner/Hendo/Chadli to free up 1.0

Also id rather upgrade Williams since his fixtures aren't as good as Cedric

Is 22 too little to spend on the defence? The front line I can have with that is so good.
    Team would look like this

    Schmeichel, (Butland)
    Huth, Kaboul, Francis, (Richards, Targett)
    Fabregas, Sterling, Walcott, Milner, (Sinclair)
    Rooney, Costa, Benteke

    Opinions appreciated
    Cheers.

if you are going in with a plan to use the WC early then this team will be great. If you want to save the WC past week 4 i'd be looking making a few adjustments. Players who may need to be transferred out early due to not playing or need to get in Hazard / Aguero / Bandwagon player X include: Kaboul, Targett, Sterling, Walcott.

I feel like Chadli is a goal scorer but very inconsistent but has good fixtures bar week 1, whereas Hendo and Milner have tough fixtures and are not goal scorers. There's also a question mark about whether they can get Benteke firing immediately.

    RMT

    Butland/Ruddy

    Ivanovic/Shaw/Huth/Kaboul/4.0

    Hazard/Walcott/Cesc/Ritchie/4.5

    Rooney/Lukaku/Sakho

    0.5 mitb

Allow me to elaborate on some of the choices:

    1) Lukaku is inly for the first two or three weeks as he would be making way for Aguero one way or the other.

    2) I think the 0.5 mitb is crucial to get aguero as it gives me the option of downgrading a 9m mid to a 7 instead of 6.5 also if lukaku is to be downgraded to wilson/deeney with no mitb a price rise would force me to get a 5m striker

    3) if it were up to me id only go for bravislav and Cesc but I am too scared not to own Hazard. I chose those 2 mainly because i think chelsea will go defensive for their difficult early fixtures which means set piece goals and hazard getting beaten out of games.

    4) I would much rather go Darmian but LVG took care of that

    5) im not very comfortable having Ritchie but its the only way I can afford this team

    6) right now my plan is to downgrade walcott or cesc in gw3 to get aguero and monitor the 7m or less strikers to decide who to downgrade lukaku to

    Look solid?

Lukaku is only for 2 weeks plus, pool away games arent that enticing either also going tekkers would rob me the chance of downgrading a 9m mid to a 7 to go rooney to aguero.

I like it a lot, and think your reasoning is sound. My current draft looks similar, and I have 0.5 itB as well. One change I would suggest is to lose Shaw, inspite of our CM signings I'm not sure utd / LvG can be trusted for CS just yet.

You could get PvA and change Kaboul to say Francis, or get Koscielny in. If downgraded, you could use the money from losing shaw to do Ritchie to Chadli/Milner and keep an eye out for emerging 6.0 mids once the season starts.

Thanks for the input. However, if i am paying 5.0 for a Sun player it would definetly be panti, also I think Bournemouth will be eaten alive defensivly so im holding on investing in their backline. And although im a chelsea fan i think united made fantastic signings in midfield and i think they will be much better defensivly especially if De Gea stays and playing Schneiderlin who I think was the main reason for all those Southampton CS

Quite like it. You will probably be shut down for going with Lukaku but especially if its only for 2-3 weeks can't see why he is a worse pick than Benteke, Pelle etc. Only issue really is that in GW3/4 when you want to get in Aguero it'll either be for Rooney or you'll have to wildcard but alot of people around here will have the same issue.

      1. Enzo the Baker

He does have the option of using 2FT for Lukaku + Cesc + 0.5m -> Aguero + 4.5m mid ... Which isn't pretty but at least doesn't involve hits or WC

I gave this specific problem quite some thought, but setting up my team to have both of them would make it quite terrible. I dont think ill be alone in that boat but worse comes to worst i can get Aguero by downgrading both ealcott and Bran, it isnt ideal but doable if Rooney becomes essential

Who are folks looking at for keepers? I'm struggling between 4.5 Schmeichel and 5.0 Panti... Thoughts?

      Definitely Panti between those two.

Anyone's guess really. Panti will probably outscore Schmeichel.

It's simply infuriating how the FPL price deciders have been so frustrating with their prices. They knew Walcott may have a bandwagon after his final performances, so they upped his value more than all the other Arsenal midfielders who played loads more minutes. They rose Sterling's price with the impending move to City. Kane's price went through the roof. Only thing they've been kind about is the GK prices.

They weren't exactly going to put a guy who scored 21 goals last season at 7.5.

That's the whole point of the game - to find value. This allows the better players to set themselves apart from bandwagons.

I don't mind Walcott at 9.0 -- if he fails you can easily switch to one of the others, and if he goes off you are getting great value.

I don't think you guys are understanding what I mean. I love what they did because it makes building a team a much more thoughtful process. I just find it difficult to work with. They've been really smart.

No they have done an excellent job. If there are no easy options then that means they have the balance right.

    Butland / Hennessey
    Azpi / Jenko / Huth / O'Shea / Francis
    Hazard / Sigurdsson / Ozil / Mane / Wanyama
    Costa / Rooney / Deeney

Still unsure on Costa + Deeney. Much rather have Benteke + Sakho + ££ but that scuppers Aguero plans

Unless you are trying to do Aguero in for only one transfer, maybe the second one could work.

I am trying to set up my team with a punty makeweight so I can do Fwd + punt to Aguero + bandwagon cheaper player, if that makes sense. Deeney could be that guy, but I am looking elsewhere.

      What are your aguero plans?

Dont really like the sigrudsson pick with so many better options at 7.0 but interesting nonetheless. Also im not a fan of 5.5 strikers since they can be a pain to upgrade especially with so many transfers wasted on getting aguero when he is back

I think Lukaku might do better this year having a proper rest and I fancy Everton to do better generally because they don't have to play the Europa League, so their assets may turn out to be bargains.
