With the new season now less than two weeks away, our community Hot Topics were full of the latest pre-season information on likely starting XIs and formations. The community discussions also took in the evolution of the Fantasy Premier League game over the years, while our community writers focused on getting the most from our backlines. We look back on the week’s activity, whilst also assessing some of the latest Members area tables and showcasing the array of community competitions being set up ahead of the campaign kick-off.

The Community Articles

Defence was a key issues tackled by our community writers, with Patch making the case for investing more heavily in Fantasy backlines, while Mouldmaster looked at the prospects of a 13.5m three way defensive rotation.

Elsewhere, Saniul offered his view on Brendan Rodgers’ likely set-up as the Liverpool revolution continued apace with the signing of Christian Benteke.

This week saw us bring you a brand new game to the pages of Fantasy Football Scout, as the draft-based Dugout FC earned a shout-out. As it happened, earlier in the week The Cisco Kid underlined the appeal of draft games and leagues.

Finally, our resident team sheet expert Demi delivered this article on the best team forums and Twitter sources for getting the inside track on starting team news straight from the fans and journos.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The pre-season itinerary of many Premier League sides picked up this week, helping to shed some more light on probable starters and formations.

Luckily, many of our resident community team experts were on hand to keep tabs on these matches. Amongst our busy scouts was Do The Van Gaal-Lem Shake, who dropped by to deliver this report on yesterday’s friendly clash between Manchester United and Barcelona. He paid close attention to the evolving partnership between Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay, which was something Mark was keen to get the community’s views on earlier in the week.

Aquafresca has also been keeping up to date on United’s pre-season fixtures and drafted this report on the Red Devils’ victory over Club America earlier in the week.

Berbinho’s Forehead’s report on Liverpool’s preparations in Australia is essential reading for those considering drafting in James Milner, while Dusan Citizen has also travelled down under to reveal that Samir Nasri is unlikely to disappear quietly in the face of rotation.

A little closer to home, Bowstring the Carp took an in-depth look at Watford’s away victory over German side Paderborn last weekend.

Pre-season friendly line-ups have also been under the watchful gaze of Couti and the Below5th as he revealed his latest update to his excellent probable starters research.

Another top researcher in the week gone by was Magic Hamster, who has been looking to see how the Rate My Team requests submitted by the community have changed as pre-season fixtures shed more light on favoured players.

Meanwhile, Lucy has used her local knowledge of Southampton to assess the south coast side’s likely starters for the forthcoming season – the essential go-to thread for those considering Ronald Koeman’s charges.

The extent to which pre-season friendlies effect our Fantasy squad selections was discussed by Andy85wsm, who was amongst our moderator and contributor team to help with the daily discussions while I was sunning myself on the Cornish coast this week.

Andy85wsm’s other daily Hot Topics this week included this discussion on how to deal with Sergio Aguero’s likely absence from Gameweek 1’s team sheet, the prospects of success for Christian Benteke at Liverpool, the importance of team balance, which of Arsenal’s many excellent midfield players to choose and the latest players to join the FPL player list this week.

Another FFScout moderator to chip in with our daily hot topic discussions was Ryan, who was interested in the effect of ownership on our squad decisions and whether the price baseline for cheap defenders has been subject to inflation this year.

Elsewhere, Epic Fail sparked this debate on the often used tag of ‘essential’ for players and Wolverine took a look at top tips for gaining a good start.

Understanding the latest rule changes in FPL, namely the introduction of new ‘chips’ to boost captaincy, bench and attacking player points, is going to be key to success this season. Knowing when potential double Gameweeks could fall will be crucial to using these chips well, according to Jairzinho. We also asked what your dream chip would be to help gain an advantage in future seasons.

The introduction of chips is just the latest innovation for FPL over its many years, as we discovered during Skool Daze’s FPL veteran quiz. This brought back happy memories of the days when Everton’s Steve Watson was near essential, while Innsie’s discussion on weird captaincy choices also took at look at Fantasy football’s oddball heroes and villains from the game’s past.

There have been a myriad of strange captaincy choices made by our Scoutcast hosts Mark and Granville over the years. Pukka popped by to see if the community would be able to help in their decision making, particularly with their annual Scoutcast team’s prospects.

The Members Tables

For those looking to assess Arsenal’s attacking options in more detail, Head2headwin has compiled this table of their performance during the final six weeks of last season. Meanwhile, Vougiedipond has created this Missed Opportunities table looking at Premier League stars’ most embarrassing statistics.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

There were a raft of tournament organisers on hand to tell us about their leagues and head to head competitions for the community to take part in. Here is a full list of those taking place, which includes Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing (FPL code 13343-18364), Hulky Punter’s Bloodbath League (FPL code 168077-145950) and The Sarjeant’s Lads on Toure league (FPL code 1866-7724).

Torres Magic has also published this community article, as a guide to his particular tournament.

    Thoughts please lads?

    Ruddy - (Hennessey)

    Ivan - Kosc - Clyne - Cedric - (Targett)

Haz - Ozil - Mane - Henderson (Fletcher)

    Rooney - Benteke - (Deeney)

Also: Is Wilson better to get then Deeny & Is Henderson better to start off with then Milner?

I would go Wilson, Watford's first four fixtures could all be shutouts, imo, while Bou have awesome fixtures. You can then downgrade a defender and either upgrade Ozil->Walcott or leave cash itb for Kun.

And I have Milner over Henderson myself - Hendo is definitely not worth it without guaranteed pens (which I'm thinking Benteke will take over).

      Otherwise solid.

Wouldn't get too hung up on penalties. As a reference, Burnley got three penalties all season last year and missed two of them.

Hey all, I think I have a (relatively) stable draft going.
    Any suggestions for this lot?

    Myhill Boruc
    Ivanovic Reid Huth OShea Targett
    Silva Walcott Milner Ritchie Anya
    Costa Rooney Pelle

Unsure about Boruc, as Federici seems to be starting in preseason. And Targett of course is risky.

    Cheers in advance.

Yep Sanchez is a LW and Walcott is a RW. some say that they won't play together as it unbalances the team because both are very attacking. Sanchez will always be on the left when fit with Ozil and Caz as backup.

Walcott is fighting it out with Ramsey/Wilshere/Welbeck/Ox depending on who is playing in the double pivot.

I honestly think Ozil and Caz are more sensible options. Both are 0.5m less, 100% nailed on and also have been firing in pre season. Leaves you with less headaches and more cash to spend elsewheer

Yep. Although Walcott could be a good downgrade candidate to upgrade a forward to Aguero in GW4, it still leaves uncertainty over his playing time assuming Alexis returns in GW2.

Yeah another good option but the same question that applies to Walcott - is he nailed?

With Caz and Coq pretty nailed in the double pivot the only space for Ramsey is wide right, but assuming Alexis is back that leaves no space for Walcott apart from up top ig Gru is out.

Yes, I think Ozil and Caz are. Although Caz was rested once last season Ozil and him have hardly missed a PL game when fit.

Well, maybe not nailed but certainly first choice. Caz could be shifted to no. 10 in Ozil's absence but when fit they'll surely both play there. Coq is a classic DM, which allows Caz to drift forward. If it was Caz/Wilshere or Caz/Ramsey it would be too unbalanced as both also want to get in and around the box.

Caz isn't at home in that position but is very capable. I definitely think Ramsey is the better player there and it suits him much more than the RW

I agree, but if memory serves correctly Caz said that is his preferred position.

And yes I agree Ramsey is also very good there, but then there is no space for Caz who is part of the backbone of the team imo

It doesn't make a difference. The team is not built around Ramsey. Wenger has to try and make a compromise that caters for everyone. Caz and Coq were clearly first choice in pivot at the end of last season when everyone was fit. Ramsey was growing into the wing role a lot more aswell.

See Cazorla could easily be benched for Ramsey. It wouldn't surprise me to even see Wilshere and Ramsey play together in the pivot as they are both solid defensively as well.

Arteta could also be competing with Coq for the more defensive role too now that he is back.

there are plenty of possible scenarios as we all know with the depth and utility of the midfield, no one is debating that but Cazorla did a great job last season. The point is there is nothing to suggest Caz and Coq won't carry on where they left off as first choice from last season.

Better than Caz? That's a tough call to make. Different players really.

But yes, Ramsey's certainly better at CM than RW, that's for sure.

That's interesting. Not sure I agree. Both are great players no doubt but are totally different, Cazorla is very creative whereas Ramsey is more inclined to shoot rather than play in a teammate.

Abit of a waste to bench your defenders since they are all quite attacking. So i would recommend u to play 4 at the back if u really want. If not u might consider downgrading ur defenders

If u want city players it seems that u can either sell defender or sell hazard. Consider hazard->fab since u are looking for coverage. Also not sure how u are getting in aguero.

Wilson@5.5m imo is a better option than ighalo

    Front 7 of

    Ritchie Walcott Hendo Silva

    Costa Rooney Sakho

Been trying ways and means to tweak as I wanted Silva and Costa as placeholders for Hazard and Aguero eventually. Considered Silva > Sterling, YYT etc.

How about Silva > Ozil? No MCI 2 ARS mids. Eureka!

Solves Ozil or Walcott issue. Works for form/fixtures/consistency. Also makes sense in that MCI may not score much without Aguero fit.

    Morning All,

    Mingolet/ 4.0
    Azpi/ Williams/ Huth/ SUND 4.5/ 4.0
    Hazard/ Depay/ Richie/ Ozil/ 4.5
    Costa/ Rooney/ Sakho

MY concern- is Richie good enough for 4th mid, do i go for a Henderson/ Milner?

    A. Stick
B- Azpi to Cedric and Richie to Henderson/ Milner
C- Sakho to Wilson and Richie to Henderson/ Milner

    Thanks

Trying to settle on a midfield and i'm thinking three £8m+ strong players and two budget mids that don't just get 2 points and can rotate. Scott Sinclair and Wes Hoolahan currently for a combined £10m, not certain about Hollahan though

Sorry was meant to be a reply. Don't think Winjaldum is an immediate option in a new looking NEW team with tough fixtures.

I think Depay needs time to adapt to MAN where he won't be a massive assist beast.

What you guys reckon of this team?

    Myhill / Hennessey
    Azpi / Sakho / Cedric / Francis / 4m
    Ozil / Walcott / Cesc / Sterling / 4.5m
    Rooney / Benteke / Pelle

No Hazard is obvious but I'm hoping Cesc can keep up in the short term.

Allows me to get Ozil and Pelle (instead of my previous Soton pick, Mane).

It becomes a game of value vs points. Hazard outscoring him by a goal will hurt via ownership. Fab has a great early season record like Ivanovic but Hazard could come out firing as he has actually had a full preseason for once.

Hazard will lose 2 or 3 for passing but otherwise he shouldn't. It's more about how his team mates fair.

there was no point having fab over hazard 2nd part last season. fab was not even better value then. he was better during the 1st half though, so it can be a coin toss. numbers wise, if they both replicate their last seasons score. fab would be 18.3 points per mil, haz 20.3 ppm.

have to disagree with your 'much better value' statement

Hazard played more minutes last season and Fabregas tales off in the second half of the season all the time. You are using stats that are a crazy generalisation over an entire season. It has no context and therefore no value.

I agree that he's much better value, but he just isn't a captaincy option, where Haz is.

There's no better options with Aguero out.

            I think Haz(c) GW1, and GW3 are good options.

Aguero can be a good captain for GW3. That leaves just GW1

But more than 1 premium option? See thats where the captaincy argument loses its value imo.

i think 2 is reasonable. as for aguero from what we see of last season even when he is off form many will still be willing to keep him (just not captaining him)

maybe more importantly is how u are going to use that 2.5m. i am more than happy to start off with hazard and then downgrade him when i eventually want to get in the likes of sanchez.

Hard to quantify as it will likely be spread around the squad with a 0.5 here and another 0.5 there.

Been experimenting with 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 formations.
Ultimetely ending up with me reverting back to my 3-4-3.

Not 100% keen on Ritchie but if I downgrade Ivan 🙁 then I'll have 4 mids in 8.5 to 9 price range (flexibility issue)

    Any thoughts?

Looks good. The only worry there is a lack of captaincy options, which happens when you stock up on players in the 8-9m like that. I guess if you captain Rooney/Lukaku in GW1, Benteke in GW2, Rooney in GW3 and then find a way to get Aguero, then actually you're pretty well set.

Hazard and Aguero are 2m plus more expensive than the next best options. Their inclusion subsequently will have a huge detrimental impact on the team.

Unless this season has its own version of last season's high performance cheapos (Siggy Downing, Kane Austin), AND Hazard and Aguero can score better than last year, i.e. 250++, I suspect many will not bring them in. They could be last year's RVP/YYT.
