I know a lot of people here, myself included, really enjoyed the Ultimate Fantasy Football (UFPL) last season and are looking forward to next season. With its sister game Fantasy Premier League (FPL) dominating much of the conversation cross Fantasy Football Scout I thought it would be a good idea to create an area for all things UFPL to be discussed. Please use this area to post RMTs, questions, tactics, rotations, and whatever else you feel applies to the ‘Ultimate’ world.

To get the conversation going here is a bit about my experience with this game, which I played during its Beta phase in 2013/14 and for its debut season in 2014/15.

I particularly like its differences to the original FPL game, which I thought was worth the £5 entrance fee. Having a 25-man squad and additional points for interceptions, recoveries, key passes gave it more depth, especially by bringing in more defensive minded players into play, thus adding a further challenge to squad selection. I also found that the scoring was higher and I managed to get a couple of centuries last year. The in-Gameweek changes with Matchdays is also appealing.

UFPL requires more time and maintenance than FPL so it’s not one for the casuals. Given my relative success last season I thought I’d share my selection tactic, which helped give me  a good team balance.

For the bulk of last season I stuck to this spread of premium, budget, mid price and ultra low priced players.

GK – 1premium, 1budget, 1 bench fodder

Def – 1premium, 3midprice, 4budget

Mid – 4 premium, 2midprice, 2 budget

For – 2 premium, 1midprice, 3 budget

I didn’t look too much into match day rotations, kept my team balanced and took a couple of risks. What advice would you give regarding making the best of the in-Gameweek transfers?

I restricted my use of loans for a few of the key double Gameweek targets. Although these mostly backfired, I think the lower cost for loans this year will make them a lot more useful and offer greater reward than last year. Do you agree?

The main point of this article is to get some discussions going that are solely for UFPL.  If you are unfamiliar with the game and want to read up on the different rules I suggest checking out the UFPL rules page here.

Thanks for this. I also enjoyed the game last season and am signed up again.

Another point to be aware of is that for the first four Gameweeks there are a total of 16 free transfers. This means for the first few weeks you can really play the fixtures and take into account those likely to miss Gameweek 1. So for example I'll be shunning Aguero and Sanchez in Gameweek 1...but over the first few weeks will look to bring them in.

    Gameweek 1 - 4 transfers
    Gameweek 2 - 4 transfers
    Gameweek 3 - 4 transfers
    Gameweek 4 - 4 transfers

do you plan on using your transfers every week or saving them up and using them all in one guy kind of like having a WC?

Saving most of them. I'll use maybe four over the first three weeks. I made the mistake last year of making too many early on and then couldn't get on emerging trends in time.

Thanks for this Djenzio, I'm new to UFPL. Unfortunately I've already submitted my squad. Tired really hard to get Aguero in but had to give up in the end and went for top notch midfield players and decent defenders. Strangely not one Chelsea player in the squad and no wedge left! I think I will keep my all transfers for Game week 4 unless someone gets a serious injury

Does anyone think with the format of ultimate that you can afford to leave out people like hazard/sanchez/Silva ?

Really enjoyed the game myself last year but let myself down by missing gameweeks too much.. Hovered around the top 20 most of the season and would have been top 3 for the majority of the season without missing 2 lots of subs early on. Going to have another go this year and try and keep up with it, it is difficult though!

Managed to get entry #1 too so hopefully my OR in the season will do it justice! 🙂

Here's my team at the moment.. Planning short term with plenty of transfers available to get Hazard/Aguero/Sanchez in somehow..

Puncheon is great for UFPL, as long as there are other matchdays. Not consistent - but huge potential for a good score now and again.

I'd probably have a revisit of your keepers. You have one non playing one with Hamer now on loan. I had two playing keepers last season and both got injured, leaving me keeper less for about a month before the winter transfer. I learned my lesson and now have three solid keepers - Ruddy - Krul and Stekelenburg.

Stekelenburg looks partic good as Southampton have four M2 or M3 games over the first seven gameweeks.

Liverpool are the only other side to have four non M1 clashes over that first 7 gameweeks.

If you are keen on a 4m one may be good idea to pick a 4m deputy of one of your other goalkeepers. That way you can be certain of having at least one playable one if injuries strike you.

I agree with Jonty on the keeper situation. either get 3 who play or get a 4m from a team you already have on GK duties.

Thanks for posting this Djenzio- great idea to have a designated forum for UFPL. I remember having some good discussions with yourself at the start of last season and it was really helpful. How did you get on last season in the end?
I finished 18th and found the following helpful in securing a good placing:

    - I made sure I had decent coverage in different positions from teams playing a lot on Sundays and Mondays. Had Lloris, Eriksen and Kane from spurs for example, who played a lot on Sundays due to Europa league. Although spurs weren't great for clean sheets it was nice to have a back-up in case my other keeper(s) blanked.

    - I didn't find the loans system very helpful. Only dabbled a few times and it didn't really work out for me. However I feel the changes in the rules will make this much more appealing this season, especially for loans over a few weeks, to replace injured players.

    - Make good use of the transfers for the first few gameweeks. I used 2 or 3 each week but saved some up for the end of the window (unused transfers carry over)

      Hey RMB, how you keeping?

I finished just outside top 100, was doing great until those DGWs and I took some dodgy loans that cost me.

Yeah I think balance is very important and trying to cover most angles.

how is your team coming on?

I'm doing good thanks - just picking my squad as we speak! Been a bit busy decorating the house so not had chance to do it properly until now - takes a lot of concentration! I'm defo going for 3 playing keepers, although one of them may be Myhill/Hennessy. How are you doing? Are you in a mini-league this year?

williams and Jagielka should do well as well on CBI. I got Williams in on my winter transfers last season and even without clean sheets he racked up some reliable 4-5 pt returns. Great UFPL player.

I think both are reasonably safe. O'Shea perhaps marginally more likely to start - but I'd also factor in age and potential for injuries which swings in favour of Coats. . Both good options I think until we know otherwise.

Nice article! Did everyone notice that loans are much cheaper this year, making the strategies for bringing in new players more robust.

I'm also likely to make liberal use of the first 16 transfers during the game weeks, that really seems like a lot in a short space of time.

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 7 months ago

Its really going to change the dynamic of the game, but also its ruined my game of monthly leaderboard hunting. With 4 week loans, you could take a 250 point hit to try and smash the next months leaderboard. Between 2 squads I hit top 50 every month but 1 between November and May with this sort of play, but the new loan system will mean I'll need the baseline squad to do well in the 4th week of a month.

Both Hazard and Aguero look difficult to fit into our teams this year given their price, and the value of 9.0 midfielders like Fabregas. Is anyone thinking of going without the really big hitters?

Yeah, balancing the budget with them is hard. I'd be loathe to go without Aguero or Sanchez, but will happily enough settle for Fabregas over Hazard (for the first half of the season at least). Same applies to Silva vs Sterling.

With Aguero and Silva priced so high, and Sterling unproven, I'm starting to think that Toure at 8.5 could be a really good Man City option this year. Certainly if he gets back to his 2013/14 productivity.

Toure could be great value, but I'm inclined to chance Sterling from the start - if Aguero's rested and he gets the nod to start upfront against West Brom, that could be a nice backup captaincy option to have in the bag come the Monday night!

Great idea, nice to have a place just for UFPL. Finished just outside the top 100 last year, having been as high as second around December (some bad loans and a poorly played transfer window!), hoping for some more consistency this year.

I feel like the budget is tighter this year with no serious 4m defenders. With the likes of Wisdom, Duff, etc I reckon I'm short of 1.5 - 2m that I spent in midfield last year.

Last season someone made a table of which days all the teams were playing on, this was really useful! With the exception of a few key players you can't miss out on, I'd say good squad management is actually more important than player selection in this game. With a bit more time and a little less laziness I'd offer to pull it together myself, but unfortunately neither are the case. I don't suppose anyone else has any plans for one?

I built one in Excel, but fixtures have only been set up to GW8 which doesn't give very long line of sight. Liverpool, Spurs and Soton have a good amount of non MD1 fixtures, and we should expect this to continue with UEFA involvement. How good they'll be after the Thursday UEFA games is another question...

Ah cheers - hadn't realised dates weren't finalised beyond that point yet. Those Europa teams are certainly ones to build the squad around. I think someone suggested last year a 50/50 split of players in and out of Europe was a good rule, and I'd be inclined to support that (though in midfield there are so many options in the big teams its hard to stick to this!).

Midfield spots certainly seem at a premium, and it was the same last year. It's difficult to justify having more than 1 mid from the same club, as it means missing out on someone else.

    Love UFPL.

It might restrict me buying an extra premium player, but I'm buying 25 starters this season. Had four non-starters last season, plus a few big injuries.

I'm also big on three playing goalkeepers. One of your regulars gets injured and you're only left with one until January. No dice.

Also keen on leaving 0.5 ITB. Hurt me last season when a player was injured. Could only loan in someone the same value or lower. For example, this season I've gone with Rooney as my second striker. If he gets injured, with 0.5m in the bank, I can loan in Costa.

    1. gavigan
      • 14 Years

Great observation on leaving money in the bank for loans. Aguero at 13m will be difficult to bring in as there's no-one that's an easy one-one swap. Similar for the 7.0m defenders, Ivanovic and Terry.

Good point, that 0.5m makes a massive difference to the range of players you can get in. Otherwise you can draw yourself into paying for a bigger loan on two players when you don't really need it.

Nice to see a UFPL article. Here are a few hints and tips I made on my lessons learned from last season:

The extra points for passes, recoveries etc. make midfielders better value generally than strikers. Select accordingly.

Match day 1 is a good time to take a captaincy punt if a big hitter is ‘covering’ on match day 2 or 3

In my opinion a 25 man squad isn’t really necessary. A cheap, non-playing GK, two non-playing DEF MID and 1 or 2 non-playing STR are fine. You simply can’t pick everyone and just end up benching cash that could be spent better elsewhere. This is especially true this season with loans becoming cheaper – you can loan in replacements instead of using your squad to cover injuries

In week rotation options are useful. For example, choose a GK from a top 4 side likely to get games moved to Sunday or Monday for TV and following Europe, and the second from a lower team. They are more likely to play on different days and give you more chance to make in week substitutions.

Good tips, especially the captaincy punt on MD1. I'm not sure I agree on as many non-playing fillers, a lot of people did that last year and ended up unable to field a full team in November/December. As you say, cheaper loans may offset that scenario somewhat.

My guess would be you were pretty lucky with injuries last season! I struggled to get out 3 defenders around Christmas! 25 solid starters for me! When players like Deeney are available for 5.5 I see no excuse for picking a non starter for a saving of all of 0.5m or so. Even with the cheaper loans.

        • 12 Years
        10 years, 7 months ago

Re: the cheap strikers, Its a shame Bobby Zamora is no longer available for 4.5 as a guaranteed appearance this year. But its better to take the price rise to 5.5 on the chin for a cheap forward rather than have a non starter.

If Berahinho leaves West Brom Ideye could be a nice pick for 5.5m (could be a fairly good pick anyway!)

An article like this, along with a dedicated UFPL area is long overdue really. Thanks for getting the ball rolling Djenzio.

My take is similar to yours. Played the full UFPL season last season and REALLY enjoyed it. Flirted with the top 5 for a couple of weeks and ended the season in the top 90.

As you rightly say, it's not a game for the casual. It takes a lot of dedication. Your week will be spent trawling through stats, live games, highlights, footy journalism, the RMT tool and any FFS post that you can get your eyes on - moreso than standard FPL.

If you want to do well at this game(and the guaranteed cash prizes are quite a motivator), forget your weekends. From the moment you wake up on Saturday till the end of MNF, you're gona be busy..forget your girlfriend(sorry ladies), forget working overtime too, cos any time there is a game on, your gone be occupied with your team.

Maybe I'm exaggerating - you can play it slightly less intense, but it'll be the luck of the gods that earns your rank that way.

To sum up, I'm really looking forward to the new UFPL season: no price changes to worry about, no casuals worming their way out of the cash league and no stupid chips or other gimmicks to keep casuals interested. Just a long, hard season of "professional" fantasy football, if you will.

    Good luck.

P.S. Please post if you got a mini-league/ cash league going and you want more entrants.

Looks solid Andy. In general having too many good forwards can be wasteful as with only 3 spots each week you can end up with a lot of money in the reserves and tough choices to make. Get a good balance of heavy hitters, mids, and budget players, and try to aim for players who score extra points through key passes, crosses, CBIs, big chances created.

looks good. I would recommend Fab if you can squeeze him in, was very good last year with all his key passes

it's a tough format to get used and I would recommend going with maybe one 4.5 striker that will never play, its hard having 6 playing strikers or even 5 to choose from as you often have too much choice and loose points etc...with such a big squad, in my opinion, you can a few non starters in each position bar goalie

Can see me spending a lot of time on this. Given that key passes etc are good I assume players like Silva and Ozil will do well?

Yep - Silva and Ozil very good UFPL picks. Nice team - quite a lot of money tied up in defence but you've got plenty of transfers yo move that money around I guess. Coleman is an interesting pick - great GW1 fixture but then a bad run. Do you plan to keep him in your squad past the Watford game?

Not a lot wrong with that, you still have the 16 transfers to make after the opening deadline till GW4 so maybe the likes of Hooper can be subbed if he doesn't feature.

well Hooper is my non player. you don't need 6 strikers, it worked me last year and i never found myself short of strikers.

but I have the 16 transfers to get the likes of Aguero/Sanchez in and change things around

That's a pretty solid team. I think going for both Haz and Fab is a sound tactic - I've got them both at the moment too, but weighing up whether to go with two Arsenal mids first (Walcott plus one other) then swap one for Haz/Fab before end of transfer window

yeah I think Fab and Haz offer so much, and Fab is even more appealing in UFPL with his passes, don't forget when players get an assist they usually get a big chances created bonus too, so players as creative as Fan and Silva hoover up the points

Your team looks really good. I don't think I'll be having Kane myself early on as Costa/Benteke/Rooney all seem better in that range, but will bring him in if he looks strong. Not keen on Cech at 5.5 either as he won't get save points, and there's better value elsewhere at Arsenal.

            Williams 55
            Fabregas 51
            Trippier 62

            Jagielka is next on 47

Knew Trippier must be well up there as I noticed he was ranked 3rd for defenders when I was picking my squad earlier. Can't believe he was top of the pile though - might have to find a place for him in my squad. Already got Williams. Great question btw!

Looks well balanced but it's fair to say it's much harder to rate an UFPL squad imo. The fixtures, more importantly the Sunday & Monday ones are a bigger factor in your squad pick.
You've a few heavy hitters but not too many & I reckon you want 25 starters, even the budget ones.
Last season turned out bad in the 2nd half for injuries so squad was important however the loan system is much kinder this year so may not be as big an issue.
Have you checked last seasons stats in the transfer window?

From Crosses down to errors, they are not season defining but give you a clue as to what players sem to benefit from the stats.
Big chances, recoveries & clearances are useful I reckon.

The defence is too lightweight I think. Even with Aguero and Hazard in the squad you can still have a good defence ( I had both last season and still had enough for Terry and Baines).
Also don't necessarily dump players into the reserves based purely on fixtures. If they're playing on matchday 1 you can always swap them out if they don't do well, but they might surprise you. For example you've got Williams in your reserves atm, but you've got a Matchday 2 player in the team. Even if Williams doesn't keep a clean sheet he is a bonus point magnet in UFPL, and could do especially well if, as expected, Swansea have to do a lot of defending

takes a while to get used to but luckily you have us pros to guide you 😉

agree with the comments above, defence is a little light, you need a Ivan/Terry/Kos type, so basically at least 1 heavy hitter in defence,

I'm not playing but here are some thoughts on your team from my experiences last year:

Every week you have up to 18 playing spots (XI + Bench) so you want this to generally be 2-6-6-4 for best flexibility. As long as the 18 conforms to this, it doesn't really matter whether your starting XI is 5-4-1, 3-4-3 or anything in between.

Upgrade Hennessey to a playing keeper, you have a chance for 3 way keeper rotation, use it!

In defence get a minimum 3 of Chelsea/Arsenal/United/City/Trippier/Williams

Remember you have 16 transfers in the opening month so you can really play the early fixtures to get ahead.

Payet is a bit of an unknown so maybe monitor for 3 weeks then use your transfers to get him in week 5 if you think he looks the business

Similarly Aguero won't be starting gw1 so you can pick Costa or Lukaku for a gameweek1 punt then get Aguero when he returns.

As goals are worth 6 rather than 5 you get in standard FPL for mids, This is something that widens the gap between the likes of haz/fab and Wally/ozil so get Wally if you can.

Something to note about UFPL extras (Key Passes, Crosses, CBIs, Recoveries) points is that they are generally icing on the cake to a goal or an assist. Somebody who gets these regularly but doesn't score/assist/clean sheet will likely end up on 3/4/5 points and be subbed anyway. Its when they match it with doing the business and you get 8/9/10/11 points that they set your player apart from the rest. What you really want but I have no idea if anyone tracked it last year is how many times somebody scored 6+ points in a game, Explosivity, not steady accumulation is key.

hey guys great discussion really useful to a noob like me. so what is the maximum/minimum score for each of the 4 position that u might consider taking out a player for a big name replacement... hope that is clear in meaning? is it just a case of settling for 3 clean sheets each week? and any goalscorer always stays?

    1. Robben Mee Blind

For keepers and defenders I pretty much always keep them in if they get a cleanie. For Mids and forwards the minimum very much depends on who you're considering bringing in and their fixture. As a general rule if thumb I kept in players if they scored 6 or more. However if Aguero was on my bench and had a plum home fixture I would defo consider replacing someone who scored as high as 8.

Yeah, can recall a couple of occasions: I left Berahino on the bench vs Chelsea when he got a brace I think, and left out Kane once (before he secured a place in starting XI). It is difficult to decide sometimes but that's part of the fun of the game.

also can i ask are the defenders from the big teams likely to heavily outscore the smaller teams even though last year arsenal for example only kept 13clean sheets compared to leicesters 10 (thats from memory and may be inaccurate but you get my meaning)

Well I got through almost all of last season without an Arsenal defender and did absolutely fine. I would recommend getting at least 1 'heavy hitter' though, and preferably 2. I had Ivan/Terry (swapped in Jan transfer window) and Baines. Also for defenders who pay for mid-table sides but who do well for CBI bonus, eg Ashley Williams is UFPL gold! Have a close look at last years highest scorers in the transfers section

I approached last season thinking that with 8 defenders in the squad I could easily rotate fixtures well enough to not need to fork out on big hitters, but often was made to sweat heavily watching the big teams play. My exception to this was Baines, who was fantastic for playing so many Sundays, enabling me to regularly use him to replace blanks with a fair level of confidence of returns. Possibly Trippier, Bertrand and Clyne could perform similarly well on Sundays this year, but I may bottle it and spend a bit more in defence this year anyway.

The difference between defenders from the big teams and from smaller teams will still be there, but not as pronounced as FPL due to the extra points that certain defenders get from CBIs and Recoveries (Lescott, Jagielka, Williams are all good examples). The likes of Terry still score well, but their teams have so much possession that they don't get as many of these bonus points.

Autosub is 99.999% not a realistic option (except where there is no MD2 for example GW38). For a sub to come on it means no captain change and no substitution as well as someone getting 0 minutes.
You get the team lineup for MNF so you should be alright with him, unless he is injure in the warmup. It is sunday that is the big problem because you only get the earliest kick-off lineups.

Yeah, agree with Ubersub. I've never yet used the auto sub function in Ultimate. Occasionally I have put a match day 1 player first on my bench just in case but usually my bench is full of MD2 & 3 players. Could be useful if you forget to make changes over the weekend or miss a deadline, so always worth putting bench players in priority order

Never played this game before. Spent a couple of hours earlier choosing my squad. Splashed out on a couple of big hitters but I found it hard to justify having too many super premiums.

what new to the league players do we think will suit the UFPL scoring system?

someone like Lens could be very good at racking of key passes and big chances.

Cedric should get similar attacking returns like Clyne n Bertie last season, but still think for UFPL Fonte is a better way into Saints defence.

Ritchie could be very good too, I think players that are the creative hub of a team are good bonus magnets
