Earlier in the week, Jordan Ayew became the third player to arrive at Aston Villa from Ligue 1 this summer as Tim Sherwood continues to assemble his new-look side. The Ghanaian signs on in a five-deal deal for a reported fee of £8.5m, as Sherwood splashes the cash following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Speaking to the club website, the 23-year-old admitted that Sherwood needed little time to convince him of making the move to the midlands:

“When I spoke to the coach I knew this was the place for me. I didn’t think twice. I knew he was the right coach for me. He has so much enthusiasm and determination for the game of football. It took 10 seconds to work out he was the right coach for me and Aston Villa was the right team for me.”

THE HISTORY

Son of African legend Abedi Pelle (and brother of Swansea’s Andre), Ayew joined fourth-tier Lyon-Duchère’s youth academy at the age of nine and left six years later for the Marseille set-up. His first professional appearance came in December 2009 as a substitute against FC Lorient in which he scored the equaliser of a 2-1 victory.

The Ghanaian went on to feature 147 times for “Les Olympiens”, including 21 Champions League appearances, and managed 22 goals and 16 assists in his time there. However, he never managed to cement a starting role and was often introduced into matches from the bench.

During the opening of the 2013-14 campaign, Ayew only notched once in 16 appearances and was consequently loaned out to FC Sochaux in January 2014 to rediscover his goal scoring touch. This deal worked well for the forward and, after a slow start, he produced five goals and two assists in his final ten outings.

After completing his loan, Ayew decided to move to pastures new in July 2014 and signed for FC Lorient in a deal worth €4 million. This proved to be the making of his career as he went on to produce 12 goals and five assists in 31 league appearances – his best ever goals per game ratio.

To date, Ayew has turned out 28 times for the Ghana national side. He broke into the first team ahead of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and started all fixtures in that competition, in which Ghana finished fourth. The striker made only one start during the 2014 World Cup as his country failed to get out of the group stages. The pinnacle of Ayew’s international career came this year, when he picked up an African Cup of Nations runners-up medal after losing to the Ivory Coast on penalties in the final.

THE PROSPECTS

The departure of Benteke has left a gaping hole up top in the Aston Villa line-up and Ayew is expected to immediately nail down a starting berth in the season ahead. Certainly, the versatile Ghana international is no like-for-like replacement for Benteke, though; his pace and movement offer options on both flanks, though he could tuck in centrally behind a more robust striker.

Although the five-foot-11-inches Ayew could also be fielded up top, he’s far less suited to a lone forward role. Given that the new boy lacks the physicality to lead the line on his own, it’s perhaps no surprise to see Sherwood linked with a move for Emmanuel Adebayor as the club’s new target man.

To an extent, much depends on Sherwood’s tactical approach for the season ahead. The Villa boss has rolled out 4-3-3-, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 formations over the summer, with Libor Kozak also staking a claim for inclusion with three goals to his name so far. A lone striker system could well see Ayew moved onto the flank, leaving the likes of Jack Grealish, Scott Sinclair, Charles N’Zogbia and Gabby Agbonlahor to battle it out for the other wing berth.

It’s worth noting, though, that Ayew excelled at Lorient as part of a two-man frontline last year and offers far greater threat through the middle. The Ghanaian managed 48 of his 81 shots on target last term – a highly impressive shot accuracy of 59% was higher than any regular forward in the top-flight.

Furthermore, his pace and tight dribbling often draws fouls which could see him pick up assists for any penalties/free-kicks that Villa convert. On the downside, though, Ayew has picked up 33 yellow and three red cards during his professional career and will need to curb his temperament in the Premier League.

Ultimately, Sherwood’s rebuilding work will be key to how we assess his side. Only Sunderland (304) created less goal-scoring chances than Aston Villa’s 306 last season and the departures of Fabian Delph, Tom Cleverley and Benteke, who contributed a combined 96 of those, will be detrimental.

Priced at just 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Ayew has a favourable opening six Gameweeks (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA) that could see him stake a claim for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ plans – all the more so if he can grab spot-kick duties as a result of Benteke’s departure. As we saw last season, Sherwood’s sides will certainly go on the offensive and, providing he can cement a spot through the centre, Ayew may well emerge as a decent value option for our three-man frontlines.

No way. Half the reason I have hazard is because of his massive ownership. It's too risky not to have high ownership players like that.

Clock is ticking down, so many lingering questions:

    Schmeichel or Myhill?
Huth or Kaboul/O'Shea/Coates/B. Jones (which one?)
    Mertesacker or Koscielny?
Anya or Mutch or Bentaleb? (or other?)

    Would appreciate your thoughts.

Then Schmeichel. Myhill has terrible fixtures to start. You can always change out with a FT later.
5th 4.5 mids are all about finding a starter, that's all. That's why he has Fletcher.

I was thinking the bad fixtures might work to his advantage in terms of saves and you never know with a Pulis defence. Schmeichel is probably the sensible option though, both short and long term...

      schmeichel 'cause of fixtures.

huth, solely because sunderland's first XI is up in the air. if sunderland's starters become clearer i'd go for one of those.

i think both their prices are fair so it doesn't really matter. just make sure you make use of the extra 0.5 if you go for mert.

Maybe the best way to get around the Aguero problem is to play the 2-5-3 gimmick thing in the first gameweek, with a heavy forward line, allowing an easy switch to Aguero in GWK 2?

They might get a sneaky draw

I'm just basing it on pure guesswork. Think west ham and bought well and have a lot to prove after last season. If arsenal are going to challenge for title they need a good start

Meant to add so arsenal might be more attack minded leaving holes at the back

I quite like the idea of Payet and Sakho but you can only really have one of them imo 2 west ham just seems a bit to much of a risk this early on

I'm not referring to best FPL start, just what team will have a good early run.

    *UPDATE*

Here is the link to the update of my "New Players Analysis" Spreadsheet. Sorry it is a bit later than expected!

New players have been added to the transfers page as well as some of the requested 'VS' feature towards the end of the spreadsheet.

If you haven't seen my first edition then here is the community article with it in which also explains how it works. - http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/10/new-players-analysis/

A cheeky RMT if you're all not too busy:

    --------------------Schmeichel-----------------

    -------Ivanovic - Koscielny - Cedric------

    Hazard - Henderson - Sterling - Depay

    --------Benteke - Rooney - Deeney-----

    Subs: Hennessey/Schwarzer - Huth - Targett - Wanyama

Plans to bring in an arsenal mid once it is clearer who is on form and nailed. Also potential to downgrade Depay/Sterling and do Rooney ---> Aguero for GW4

Either way, you have a spot for the budget striker and you can simply switch on to whichever presents himself early doors in his place.

Both could be gone soon if United are slow out of the blocks again this season. Aguero and Wally could be in there.

    Courtois, Hennessey

    Mertesacker, Jenkinson, O'Shea, Mings, Moore

    Hazard, Walcott, Henderson/Chadli, Ritchie, Fletcher

    Costa, Rooney, Defoe

Thoughts? There's 2m left over to either go Costa > Aguero, or upgrade Henderson/Chadli.

I'd love to have many midfielders but I went for a good price spread.

Deeney and Wilson both seem better to me. Not to mention Sakho or Cisse at 6.5 who I would both certainly try and find .5 to upgrade to from Vardy.

Different level premiership from championship. Takes a while to find your goalscoring boots. With Vardy, he's a busy striker, with assists in him and you get 101% from him.

            Just an opinion!

I'd stay away from Championship strikers from the start. Even if they turn our to be like Austin or the legendary Phillips, I think it'd be safer to monitor early on and it'll be no harm jumping on the bandwagon a bit later.

Sakho and Cisse are good. I'm giving a look at Bojan.

Maybe I'm looking back with rose tinted glasses but there was always a few I didn't mind having . This year I'm currently on Huth , not so bad & oshea , awful / rotation threat / lack of attacking prospects / poor team

Some good prospects with emerge for sure - especially as transfers settle in.

Wisdom could be solid and Angella at Watford is a goal threat. Hagelaand as well if he regains his goal-threat from years past, but I suspect some of the 4M players will come to the fore as well.

Lampard didn't step down a level to the U21 from playing in the senior national team.

Playing in the U21 Euros this summer, didn't do Emre Caan any harm. He had a good tournament.

              Spurs fan by any chance?

How many games did England even play in that tournament, 3? I don't think you can judge a player by three games, under a different manager and playing with worse players. Plenty of better players than Kane have had bad international tournaments, including some FPL favourites like Hazard and Aguero.

I don't have Kane in my team but I think people are unfairly writing him off. I seem to remember the same thing happening with Gareth Bale, although I may be wrong. Kane's destruction of the Chelsea backline didn't happen by accident.

I'm not a Spurs fan btw, maybe this just happens with Spurs players because the team itself usually flatters to deceive.

Sometimes players lack the mental temperament. When Kane scored his goals against Chelsea, nobody expected him too, pressure was off.

When Poch gave him the armband last season, the goals dried up. When Kane was chasing the golden boot against Aguero, the goals dried up.

This summer Kane was expected to shine in the U21 championship. Again he blanked.

I see a pattern emerge. Hey, I could be wrong and he could have a stormer this season.

I’m tossing up between three back 7 options at the moment; with a total cash spend of: 33.5mil. I’ve come up with three options, one with no bench fodders, one with potentially a GK bench fodder and one with a defender bench fodder.

As much as we’d like to stay away from bench fodders, it is possible to probably get away with 1 x 4.0 Defender to start with as long as you’ve picked nailed on players.
I’m digging Option 3 at the moment, it is a bit of risk, yet offers some reward with rotating keepers, and a stronger back line which includes a rotating pair of SWA/LEI though the risk is the one 4.0 defender.

Option 1 is probably the safest route, but has a slightly weaker back line and no bench fodders at all.

Option 2 offers the strongest back line of the three with no defender bench fodders but potentially only gives you one playing keeper, unless Hennessy moves away from Palace.
    Options below:

Option 1 - Rotating keepers – no bench fodders:
    Butland / Ruddy
Azpi Williams / Huth O’Shea Francis

    Option 2 – 4.5 / 4.0 keeper combo (potentially 1 GK bench fodder):
    Butland (4.0 Hennessy)
Azpi Cedric Williams / Huth O’Shea

Option 3 – Rotating Keepers - 1 defender bench fodder:
    Butland / Ruddy
Azpi Cedric Williams / Huth 4.0

Note: O’Shea and Francis are listed in the above at the moment, however the 4.5m defender spot is open for any other player that fits either option.

If you had to pick one of the three options, what one would it be?
FYI, the front 8 I have costs :

    Hazard Sterling Ozil Mane (King)
    Rooney Benteke Sakho

Cedric is not a start every week defender for me, at all. I'd downgrade whichever attacker you like least for .5 or 1.0 more to pump into defense.

I have gone option 2 because I am not one for rotating keepers. I always pick wrong and even with a 'bad' fixture a budget keeper can pick up plenty of save points.

I always rotate keepers as you will get a couple stretches where you keeper goes down injured and it sucks to burn a transfer just to have a playing keeper. Points tend to even out as well I have found over the years.

I always have a 4M bench fodder defender. At least a couple playing 4M defenders will emerge and give you a playing 15th player that will come into play at some point.

That leaves one top tier defender (usually Ivanovic or Baines for me historically), one second tier (in the 5-5.5M range) and a couple rotating 4.5's.

      Simple really.

I hear you. I may have been trying to squeeze as much money into.the main front 7, maybe downgrading Sterling will give some more funds.

If you have two keepers from the same Club (Schmeichel, Schwarzer / Ruddy, Rudd) then you're covered if injury should strike for a price of only 8.5m.

Hardly excessive for most people over here when it comes down to it. Sure, there is pride for country and people get up for various occasions, some more than others, as with pretty much anywhere else. I've lived in other countries, so I've seen different examples of national pride firsthand. It runs deep in all lands. The national anthem, in a way, has become part of the fabric in a sense for the performance of the artist(s). It's definitely not an easy song to sing, unless you're Whitney Houston.
