Despite guiding Tottenham to a sixth place slot in 2013/14 after replacing Andre Villas-Boas as the Tottenham manager, Tim Sherwood wasn’t offered the Spurs job on a permanent basis, with chairman Daniel Levy instead opting for Southampton’s Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine arrived at White Hart Lane having led the Saints to an eighth place finish, and immediately went about adding to his squad, with Ben Davies, Michel Vorm, Federico Fazio, Eric Dier and Benjamin Stambouli all joining during the summer transfer window. There were plenty of departures too, with Michael Dawson, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Sandro among the big names to leave.

In this members article, we take an in-depth look at Pochettino’s first season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators as Tottenham recorded a fifth place finish in the Premier League.

Currently got a squad of :

    Guzan - Speroni
    Schlupp - Azpi - Cook - Fonte - Ward
Redmond - Siggy- Hazard - Ritche - Cazorla
    Benteke - Rooney - Deeney

I have 2.0 ITB and don't know where to upgrade as I think the squad is pretty solid.. Any advice?

How integral is Sanchez in all of this? He's kind of the forgotten man because Hazard and Kun dominate talk.
Is it worth planning for life with all 3? Geez it kills the budget and unless you start with Kun, leaves 4-4.5m in the grandstands, excluding hits of course.

In my team's sense it's sacrificing Siggy for a 5.5 initially, to upgrade Walcott to Sanchez when he's back...not entirely a bad thing considering Walcott's output could be affected by Sanchez as soon as GW2.

Kind of like Walcott captain option for GW1...guess if he hits the ground running you hold, if he doesn't you transfer

One thing that jumped out at me from last night's excellent surgery was Liverpool. Jonty seemed pretty down on their opening fixtures, but to me they seem to have some of the best.

Bournemouth H should be easy, new side won't have found their feet. West Ham home in week 4 is also about as good as it gets - Hammers were dire away last year. I'm also not convinced they won't go out there to get some revenge on Stoke. Arsenal away is a bust, sure, but most teams have a bad game in the first 4 (Man C vs Chelsea has bus parking and 0-0 all over it).

I'm feeling more and more like GW4-5 WC is the way to go, but to make that work you need a good stacked team for the first 4 weeks. Easier said than done at the start of the season.

    1. Brian (Not the Messiah)
      • 16 Years

for us gw3 wildcarders, it makes sense to leave Liverpool alone and get them from gw4.

GW3 WC seems too risky, I want to hold on until the international break.

Definitely works fixture-wise to play after GW3, but the idea of playing WC then seeing 2 or 3 injuries on international duty with no way to fix but big early hits...Ugh.

good point. I'll keep that in mind. fortunately my 3 gw team will work over 4 gameweeks and I'll use 2 transfers to get Aguero in for gw4.

Jonty made a good case for Ivanovic. He's basically a cash store so you can get Aguero in 2 transfers. Downgrading an 8.5 mid to a 6.5-6.0 may not be easy, with poor options at that price, but downgrading a 7.0m def to a 5.0-4.5 is simpler.

      it's an option I' considering

I'll cross the Aguero bridge when I come to it

I disagree...Don't you think atleast one out of ritchie/lens/cabaye/chadli etc will show some form early on so you could downgrade an 8.5 to them..makes sense to me

    4. andy85wsm

      • 15 Years

Plenty of potential ways to downgrade to get Aguero from Rooney:

Hazard to 9m/8.5m (considering you'll probably start captaining Aguero this isn't the worst idea)

8.5/9m mid to 6-6.5 - one may have emerged as a strong contender by then

      Plus Ivanovic....

Flexibility might be key. Or you just go for him from the start!

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 14 Years

        Yep, some good options there.

City face the best two defences in the first 2 games so reluctant to start with any City.

Yeah I'm starting with Ivan just because I'm scared of the weird voodoo that has him scoring at the start of each season haha, him to Azpil is a 1m in the Aguero fund and I'll get the rest from 1 or 2 other places.

God I've just realised how many "HOW DO I GET AGUERO INTO THIS TEAM IN 3 TRANSFERS?" Posts that are going to be on here come GW4 or so lol 🙁

So putting money into a defender forcing you to use 2 transfers instead of 1 is better than leaving funds in the 'cash store' that is your bank.

    A. Does a 4-3-3 mean Mata plays on wing or as a deep lying playmaker. If the latter, does it diminish his value?

Guesses is all they would be, unfortunately. The fan forums seem to expect Kaboul to be 'nailed on', but again that's just opinion. I can see why people are saying O'Shea, given that he's captain. But teams have had non-playing captains before.

I know this isn't what you asked but I was having the same problem and ended up paying the extra 0.5 for PVA. With those fixtures I wouldn't want to pick the guy that ends up on the bench. Also the attacking threat helps soften the blow when they concede.

True, they haven't. I usually go in with a few 4.5s and a 4 in defence but this year I've had to have a complete rethink. Anyway if I had to pick I'd probably agree with you and go with O'Shea just don't want to take the risk myself. Good luck!

Had his chances but the MLS Allstars had the better of the play in attacking areas so the ball wasn’t there for Spurs but Chadli should be fine going into the season.

So Rooney shite preseason then ? I might go with Kane-Sakho-Pelle/Benteke , all good choices and will give me a strong defence and midfield

depends on your strategy...have enough cash to bring in Aguero?

Anyone else concerned about Benteke's lack of pre-season football - i mean i know he's been training but still..

Perhaps Pelle would be a safer option although judging by last season he's a bit un-reliable on the goal front.

    RMT please 🙂

    Courtois - (Speroni)
    Clyne - Kos - Vert - (O'Shea) - (Baker)
    Haz - Ozil - Henderson - Mata - (Barry)
    Rooney - Benteke - Deeney

Still deciding between the 8.5mids - Ozil & Mata, or one replaced by Caz/Ramsey/Eriksen#

    Thanks!

So I'm not quite up to date on the whole ki craze. I guess he's nailed on? What about shelvey/ siggy/ cork/ Britton/Ayew etc? I know he has a good goal threat, but surely rotation is an issue?

It's a point. I mean, all the mids have been given the same amount of game-time in preseason, so there's no clues there. I would imagine Ki & Shelvey will play, but the introduction of Ayew muddies the waters a little.

Cheers. Yeah, it's annoying because I'd probably have him if I had some reliable assurance that he would be nailed on, but I don't think the risk of having your fourth mid rotated is worth the potential good value he offers.

As FPL opened this year, I saw many people saying they had promised last year to start/stick with Ivanovic this year finally. Nearly 70% of the discussions were in favour. Now as the kick-off comes nearer, people seem to be gravitating towards cheaper and cheaper defences, considering even newcomers to the PL (from down below and abroad) as 'nailed-on', 'great-value'.

Is it always like this every pre-season?

Yep. It is dawning on me why people always promise end-of-season to start with Ivan. His price. And then it will start again be winter.

I'm sticking with Ivan to start this year! Fool me twice...

(but I will downgrade him to get Aguero when the time comes)

It's easier to say you're going to start with Ivanovic when you have a team value of 105-106.

Then FPL starts and you realise you only have 100m to spend and want a lot of players 🙂

      Guilty.

    Any opinions?

    Butland McCarthy
    Ivanovic Mertesacker Darmian Francis Saylor
    Hazard Ozil Sterling Walcott Bentaleb
    Lukaku Pelle Sakho

Really want to fit PVA & Silva but cannot justify losing any other players.

    Ruddy (Butland)
    Azpil, Koscielny, Huth, (Kaboul, Targett)
    Hazard, Walcott, Sterling, Milner, (Sidwell)
    Rooney, Kane, Ighalo.

So, I've been put off by Rooney slightly & can't help but feel there's no one decent upfront. Here's my current XI:

    Speroni | Ruddy

    Clyne | Bellerin | Alderweireld | Huth | Yoshida

    Hazard | Walcott | Sterling | Depay | Hoolahan

    Benteke | Pelle | Sakho

Torn between Mata & Depay, but Depay playing centrally could be a big factor.
