Despite guiding Tottenham to a sixth place slot in 2013/14 after replacing Andre Villas-Boas as the Tottenham manager, Tim Sherwood wasn’t offered the Spurs job on a permanent basis, with chairman Daniel Levy instead opting for Southampton’s Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine arrived at White Hart Lane having led the Saints to an eighth place finish, and immediately went about adding to his squad, with Ben Davies, Michel Vorm, Federico Fazio, Eric Dier and Benjamin Stambouli all joining during the summer transfer window. There were plenty of departures too, with Michael Dawson, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Sandro among the big names to leave.

In this members article, we take an in-depth look at Pochettino’s first season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators as Tottenham recorded a fifth place finish in the Premier League.

Hey guys, just two quick questions:

Is it likely that Jedinak will start for Palace?

    and

If/when will Adebayor move to Aston Villa? Is he a fairly decent third striker shout?

    Thanks!

If you have him when he feels like it, which is difficult to predict. Stick with Deeney, Sakho, Gomis, hungry strikers who play for their team.

I've built every one of my drafts around Hazard, Walcott, Sterling, Rooney and Benteke so obviously B gets my vote. Would be nice to get Depay in as well and he may turn out to be a 'must have' but I think it's safer to have the immediate captaincy option of Rooney

The last Penalty Chelsea had was in GW 38. Diego Costa took it while Eden was on the pitch. Neither it looked like Hazard let Costa to take that Penalty nor Costa asked for it. It was pre-decided & it was the 1st Penalty Chelsea had after Hazard missed it few weeks before. Penalty was awarded in 36th min. when Sunderland were leading 1-0 at Bridge.

Think I'm just going to make a team for the first three gameweeks, then WC to get Aguero in. So much is up in the air now. City's fixtures turn for the better then (Silva, anyone?), United's for the worse, and it means I can get the likes of Walcott and Young without worrying about having to ditching them with my precious Aguero transfers.

Players not even under consideration now also come into play then, like Sanchez and Costa, while others like Kane and Sigurdsson become so much more appealing without a tough away fixture looming. West Brom defence becomes more viable, we know how everyone is lining up, most transfer business will be done, chance to build TV etc etc.

I'd like to remain flexible and only play it 'when its needed', but I think this is the lesser evil than building a safe, compromised starting team which is largely based around how to get a player that won't be in my team for three weeks. Better to be aggressive, attack the start of the season and get as many points as I can, then worry about the long haul with a lot more information than I have now.

        In flux!

Safe, long term defence is like this:

        Panti - 4m
        Azpi - Lescott - Cedric - Francis - Bassong

        Short term defence like this:

        Ruddy - 4m
        Kos - Williams - Jenkinson - Francis - Huth

Long term team has predictable picks like Cazorla, and players with a tough GW1 fixture like Chadli and Sakho, and several routes to bring Aguero in.

Short term team lets me comfortably pick players with more potential to start explosively - mainly Walcott.

Better to use wildcard after gw4 when first int break kicks in.

Transfer window closes, you might face several injuries in your squad at int. break adn you ahve two weeks to re build your team and if lucky build up value as well.

      1. Ludo
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

Team value is not such a deal breaker for me, and its a myth that you make more money in the international break - the rate halves to compensate. As for injuries, I take your point, but several injuries would be incredibly unlucky.

I think the arrival of the fully fit 13m best player in the game to my team, at home to possibly the most disorganised defence he'll play all season, along with the other reasons above, justifies a WC.

Why don't you just use 2 FTs instead?

Because I'm finding that planning for Aguero is stopping me from picking the team that I want for the start of the season.

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 5 months ago

      Devil's advocate...

When will you use your second WC... a DGW? So that's about 30 GWs between WCs?

It's your most valuable asset and you're using it four GWs in. We're basically in WC mode now and you're planning to use another in four weeks. Is that even enough time for Young and Walcott to score big? I'm not sure.

Rather than effectively planning to fail, why not plan routes to those players in GW4. You've got a WC now and 3 FT to get Aguero and co.

I'm currently in this camp. I've only written this because your post is convincing! Are you convinced enough to be doubt-free after reading my post?

      1. Big Red Dog
        • 14 Years

I am, I think early wildcards are effective, gives you more of an idea of who's going to do well, start, play in point scoring positions, and we know that GW4 City's fixtures get much better. That's the plan for me

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 5 months ago

But GW4 is after three games. Will Premier League managers actually know their best teams by then? Will we really know who's nailed? For instance, will you know who you prefer out of Sterling and Silva? You've then used your WC, when I *might* just do Haz+Rooney -> Silva+Aguero with two FT...

It's not my plan, to be honest. Wouldn't want to sell Rooney and Hazard in the same week. But it's 2FT that could save a WC.

      2. Ludo
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 5 months ago

Hmm, I'm not THAT convinced, good post!

I'm just leaning this way now... We get a WC in the first half of the season, is there going to be a more effective time to use it than GW4, overall?

It's scary to go so long without the safety net of a WC, but if you wait until GW12-13 (third international break, I doubt many will wait longer for the first WC), you're still looking at twenty gameweeks - plenty of time for your team to go to pot.

I love the idea to be honest of making a 3 GW team. It's more fun that way.. but I don't think the likes of Walcott are going to go crazy.

You're probably right about the 20 GW thing! I was considering a Christmas time one... pre- or post-Xmas when things get messy.

          Verdict: Still undecided!

If Costa doesn't look likely to start, which should I do?:

    After doing Costa to Benteke

A: Upgrade Bolasie to Depay or Sterling
    B: Upgrade defence
C: Upgrade Sakho to Lukaku or Pelle
D: Keep afew million in the bank for Aguero

      A has most upside.

      There's your answer.

Sakho is a great option and few serious players will have Aguero.

      A with Özil..
or if you do A with Siggy, you can upgrade your defence as well.

Kills Bamford if they get another average striker to rotate... Pards will have to give them all a go, until he realises Paddy is #1.

Repost as got stuck at the bottom of another page with no replies!

RMT please! I'm pretty set on this, haven't made any significant changes other than the odd player in the same price brackets!

    Panti
    Azpilicueta Bellerin Darmian
    Hazard Walcott Depay Tadic
    Aguero Sakho Wilson

    Bench; Hennessey Francis Fletcher 4.0

    My Thoughts explained:
Keepers; Simple as Panti week in, week out, if he's not going well theres Mignolet or Fabianski or a 4.5 that's going well, so not an issue if needs changing.
Defenders; Chelsea, Arsenal and United defenders who may not be 100% nailed on but they're certainly the current first choice. If any get dislodged I'll downgrade to a 4.5 and rotate with Francis!
Midfield; Hazard, no explaination needed. Walcott, may change to Ozil but easier to downgrade than upgrade should he start off well! Depay, United "coverage" and I feel he'll do well as an optimistic fan. Tadic, between him and Mane and Pelle I just went for the cheapest one as I feel he's got as good a chance at doing well as any!
Strikers; Aguero I think will play some part GW1, but will wait till press conferences. Should I change Aguero, Sakho will be upgraded but I think other than GW1 he has good fixtures. Wilson has better fixtures than Deeney and if Ritchie is going to do as well as people say, he has to assist someone!

Quite long but I'm hoping this will be the last time till a week on friday that I'll be changing my team so will just be giving my opinions on others teams until then!:-)

Many thanks in advance if you've bothered to read!:-)

Would definitely not go bellerin or darmian mate what if neither start then you're screwed, rest of the team is okay, still wouldnt go depay since he's looked poor or tadic but thats up to you he could do fine. Rest looks okay

Cheers for the reply but LVG has confirmed Darmian and he's been really impressive and Bellerin I will change if he doesnt play in the CS! Depay I'm having a punt on for Uniteds fixtures as Im not spending 2.0 more on Rooney

You got to be careful with pre-season form. Rooney may lack form but we know what he's capable of. and Sterling has been looking brilliant but with Aguero in the team he'll probably get less opportunities.

Agreed on Rooney. I can only see Aguero being good for Sterling though. Presumably assists will be his bread-and-butter.

Hey guys, would really appreciate some help with my team. I've been tinkering for ages, can't seem to get anything that I feel solid with.

    Rudd (Butland)

    Merte - Azpi - Cedric (O'shea, M Richards)

    Hazard - Sterling - Ramsey (c) - Henderson - Jedinak

    Giroud - Rooney (Bojan)

I'm not sure on a third striker, not particularly keen on henderson but have him to cover liverpool and the majority of people who have him. Jedinak is cheap at 5.0 and takes direct frees and corners.

    Any suggestions? Thanks

What do you think of this 3-5-2 set up for forst 3-4 GW

    Schmeichel - Schwarzer

    Cédric - Azpi - Francis - O'shea - Baker

    Haz - Wally - Hendo - Depay - Sterling

Kane - Pellé - Van Wolfinskel

I’ve got a midfield of Sterling Hazard Depay Milner Cabaye/Lens. I like yours but what I will say I feel if your going to play 3-5-2. The two have to be really good. Kane is fine but consider Costa, Rooney and Benteke and Giroud to lesser degrees.

I get your point but Pelle has got great fixtures and started last season strong if i remember right so I think he will do for the first weeks, other strikers don't appeal, Tekkers adaptation, roo and Costa poor pre-season form.... That's just my feeling.
then i'm aiming at kane - aguero with one or two trendy cheap midfield in there

Facing a real duel for that 4.5m defender spot on my team. Narrowed it down to O’Shea, Bassong and Micah Richards. I can’t say all three play for solid defensive teams. Bassong I think is the team captain and I know O’Shea is for sure but Richards is a guy on a comeback trail and have a lot to prove playing with a new defense. Help me out here guys!

Do you trust Norwich and Aston Villa’s defense more? I’m worried about all three but this is a risk I have to take.

      • 14 Years

I can't see Villa defence being great , a few new faces in there, they'll take time to settle. Richards is quality but I preferred him as a fullback, allegedly he'll play centre back for Villa. I still have more faith in Sunderland defence than Villa's and ultimately if a defence loses CS it doesn't matter how good the player is that you have, better picking a lesser player form a team with more CS potential.

Sunderland, with the excellent Pantilimon behind them look a better bet. As JohnO is the captain he'll be nailed-on but a better 4.5m option might emerge for them.

Hours later I'm having a rethink on Richards. I would have no hesitation picking Ron Vlaar had he been with Villa So why not Richards, I ask myself. Richards could bring just as much scope. Can bring more attacking intent as O'Shea and hopefully still has intentions of an England place. O'Shea doesn't need to improve to be an international. Would find it more difficult to get out of the Ireland squad than get into it 🙁
