Southampton sweep aside Vitesse Arnhem, thanks to goals from Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long. Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate net for the Hammers but a lack of discipline costs Slaven Bilic’s side dearly, whilst Patrick Bamford hits a 20-minute hat-trick as Palace put six past Bromley Town.

Southampton 3 Vitesse Arnhem 0

The Saints impressed at both ends of the pitch as Ronald Koeman’s side edged towards the Europa League group stages with a comprehensive win at St Mary’s. Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic (penalty) and substitute Shane Long all found the net, with Sadio Mane supplying a pair of assists before new boy Juanmi teed up Long for the third.

Koeman named Maarten Stekelenburg in goal, with a back-four comprised of Cedric Soares, Maya Yoshida, José Fonte and Matt Targett. Jordy Clasie and Victor Wanyama sat in the double-pivot, whilst Steven Davis, Mane and Tadic Dušan tucked in behind lone striker Pelle. New boy Soares caught the eye with a number of raiding runs down the right, whilst Yoshida was unlucky not to find the net after missing a handful of opportunities.

After the match, Koeman highlighted his key performers:

“Jordy had a good understanding with Victor, who I thought was one of the best players on the pitch in my opinion. Cedric had good movements in the first half. He was dangerous in the attacking position. Maarten made a good save at 2-0 and you always like to have the goalkeeper in that kind of important moment saving the team. Mane was outstanding. He is fast and he had good movements in attack. He’s very difficult to defend in a good way against. He played well.”

The Saints boss conceded that Clasie is a doubt for the season opener at Newcastle after the midfielder was forced off just after the hour mark with a hamstring problem. Given that the return leg against Vitesse is just three days before their trip to St James’ Park, last night’s result may well persuade Koeman to rest some of his key players to avoid further injury headaches.

West Ham 2 AFC Astra Giurgiu 2

Goals from Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate had placed Slaven Bilic’s side in the driving seat before the dismissal of James Collins allowed the visitors to claw back a two-goal deficit.

In terms of team selection, Bilic lined his side up in a 4-3-1-2 set-up, according to the club’s twitter feed. Adrian got the nod in goal, with O’Brien, Collins, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell in the back-four. Mark Noble, Reece Oxford and Cheikhou Kouyate patrolled the central midfield, with Dimitri Payet (who grabbed the assist for Valencia’s opener) handed the role in “the hole” behind the Ecuadorian and Zarate.

Bilic was unable to call upon suspended pair James Tomkins and Diafra Sakho for this one and will now need to make do without Collins and Joey O’Brien for the return leg next Thursday. The latter earned his third yellow of the tournament before being replaced due to injury, whilst Valencia was also forced off, adding to his manager’s woes.

Post-match, Bilic admitted he was somewhat concerned by Valencia’s injury after the forward – playing his first match since the Copa America – was stretchered off:

“I am worried to be fair. And this is the reason I am unhappy tonight. I am not happy with the result of course but this is not as important as the injury. It looks serious but we won’t know for sure until he has a scan.”

In spite of the draw, though, the Hammers boss confirmed that most of his starters for the Gameweek 1 trip to Arsenal will not take part in next Thursday’s return leg:

“It was the same plan, no matter what the result is, that the majority of the players who will start against Arsenal will not participate in that game. We would like to do both, but the Premier League was and is the priority for us.”

The Croatian faces a real defensive dilemma for the return leg next week, then. With Collins, Tomkins and O’Brien all suspended, he could turn to Reece Burke in light of his above comments. Carl Jenkinson is likely to play in O’Brien’s absence, though the former cannot feature against his parent club at the Emirates. With O’Brien a doubt for the Arsenal clash, the Hammers could be severely hampered at right-back for the opening day of the season, having also allowed Guy Demel to leave over the summer. Given that Alexis Sanchez is unlikely to feature for the hosts, Arsene Wenger may well choose to unleash Theo Walcott down the Arsenal left to take advantage.

Bromley Town 0 Crystal Palace 6

Patrick Bamford was the star of the show as the Eagles ran riot at Bromley Arena. The on-loan Chelsea striker grabbed a first-half hat-trick before being replaced at the break, whilst Sullay Kaikai, Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha also added their names to the score sheet.

Alan Pardew mainly called upon players who had failed to earn much pitch time in the club’s recent tour of South Africa. Alex McCarthy got the nod in goal, with a back-four of Martin Kelly, Brede Hangeland, Luke Croll and Christian Scales. Zaha, Jordon Mutch, Joe Ledley and Kaikai made up the midfield, allowing Gayle and Bamford to take their places up front. The Eagles boss made seven changes over the course of the second period, though Yannick Bolasie has yet to feature in recent matches due to an ongoing hamstring problem.

Is anyone considering ibe as a 5th playing mid? After Rodgers comments I have put him in my team. Sacrificed Deeney to do so but have £1m itb now for post-gw1 tinkering. I'm not even 60% sure of this move due to Deeneys nailed-on-Ness & the fact he's on pens but ibe has looked awesome recently & is more explosive.
    Opinions?

Not a huge fan of the MCI double-up in midfield and the AVL double-up in defence. Everton have tough fixtures to start so I wouldn't consider Jagielka right off the bat.

      1. Skyblue74
        • 10 Years

        Thanks for the comment!

Good point there! The main reason why I have double up MCI midfield is because Sterling will probably play as striker against WBA (he has played the whole Pre-Season as alone striker (or then shared the striker duties with Iheanacho), and the chemistry with Silva is amazing), I doubt that Pellegrini is going to start Bony (haven`t played a single pre season match I think) I believe that Yaya will improve from last season and he will take the penalties when Aguero is rested. Considering that City play Chelsea in GW2 makes me too doubt the double up MCI tho.

And now that you mentioned I might have to change Jagielka.. do you have any suggestions?

When we talk about the AVL double up, I have had Guzan on my team for 2 years already and he`s a decent goalie for that 4,5mil and I believe Richards will do well in AVL so that`s just a risk I have to take there with double AVL 😀

    RP.

    Arsenal XI issues.
Looking at the comparison tool in the members section, it is a no-brainer which 'defender' at the RB position Arsené will(should) be starting in GW1. While that conundrum might still lead to ignoring both for FPL managers, it still has implications for Arsenal selection.

    1. A fit Theo is a starting XI player. Ignore tailend of last season, he was not starting simply because of his recent return to fitness. A full pre-season will see him start.

    2. There is some argument that Arsené will not play both of Bellerin and Theo. So it is not a problem since Debuchy will start.

    3. What about Ramsey/Cazorla/Wilshere.In spite of last season where 2 of those 3 always played, this season if Theo is to start, then only 1 of them will be playing. Coq has 1 spot sewed up so expect only 1 of those to start. However, inevitably some injuries will be there so 2 of those 3 will become the double pivot when Coq is not fit.

Disclaimer: Just a fan's perspective. No connections to Arsené.

      1. Just not true, however anyone on here wants to believe it is.

      2. Bellerin will be first choice IMO - seems inexplicable to drop him.

      3. See (1).

        • 11 Years

Imo, Debuchy is ahead of Bellerin as his defending is much better. Same as Monreal has usurped Gibbs. Bellerin is miles better attacking but Debuchy is stronger, more experienced, a better header of the balls (stats back it up.)

However, we can't settle this discussion before the season starts as we really do not know what Arsené will do so lets just wait and see. Both are good players, so Arsenal still in a good position. 😉

        This.

On 1, I just can't believe that people are hacking this nonsense around. Walcott was fit from February. Wenger just chose not to play him.

On 2, hasn't Wenger been reported as telling Bellerin that the spot was his to lose or keep? Like you I'd be bewildered if he preferred Debuchy.

On 3, Walcott is more of a threat to Giroud's position than the others mentioned as far as I can see. 😕

    Hey guys
Can you RMT please. Couple of bits I'm unsure of....

    Schmeichel (Schwarzer)
    Azpi/mertesacker/Mings (dummett/o'shea)
    Ozil/fabregas/Sterling/Walters (wanyama)
Aguero/Rooney/Adebayor (assuming he goes to Villa)

    Thoughts??
I'm aware Aguero won't start the season so may look to change him and leave cash in the bank so it's a straight swap. Or potentially just leave him be for now....

It now seems that both Reeces, Burke and Oxford, both 4.0, may well be nailed for Game Week 1 ... 🙂

        Burke - Right Back
        Oxford - Defensive Midfield

Amazingly, we have a crisis, caused by Joey O'Brien's stupidity.

Ok we are almost here folks, i dont think any more adjustments will be made.

    Adrian Butland
Azpi Cedric Jenks Bassong Baker(or another 4.0 df)
    Hazard Ozil Silva Hoolahan Wanyama
    Rooney Benteke(or Kane) Sakho

    1.0 mil in the bank
    ozil--->6.0 or less at GW3
    Sakho--->5.5 or less & Benteke--->Kun at GW4

Note that WHU and STO rotate perfectly!

Also been thinking bout this team

    Ruddy Guzan
    Ivanovic Huth Francis Bertrand Toby
    Walcott Yaya Chadli Ibe Fab
    Rooney Kane Deeney
    0.5 itb

And last but not least a friend's ''buffed'' team

    Courtois Schwarzer
    Cahill Clyne Mertesacker Mings Turner
    Hazard Sterling Depay Hendo Bentaleb
    Kane Wilson Pelle

    Thoughts on each team?
Mostly first,my team, its different than most in here

    Schmeichel - Schwarzer
    Azpillicueta - Koscielny - Rose - Francis - Prodl
    Hazard - Walcott - Chadli - Ki sung-yueng - Anya
    Aguero - Pelle - Sakho

    Balanced?

flexibility is key, i can comfortably play 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 or even 5-3-2 in extreme cases

      1/2
      2/3
      2/3
2/2 = 7/10 Very nearly an 8. Very nice team. Yes, balanced.

Both defence and midfield are more or less 3s for me. I am not a fan of Azpilicueta, but needs must, when the Devil drives.
