Southampton sweep aside Vitesse Arnhem, thanks to goals from Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long. Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate net for the Hammers but a lack of discipline costs Slaven Bilic’s side dearly, whilst Patrick Bamford hits a 20-minute hat-trick as Palace put six past Bromley Town.

Southampton 3 Vitesse Arnhem 0

The Saints impressed at both ends of the pitch as Ronald Koeman’s side edged towards the Europa League group stages with a comprehensive win at St Mary’s. Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic (penalty) and substitute Shane Long all found the net, with Sadio Mane supplying a pair of assists before new boy Juanmi teed up Long for the third.

Koeman named Maarten Stekelenburg in goal, with a back-four comprised of Cedric Soares, Maya Yoshida, José Fonte and Matt Targett. Jordy Clasie and Victor Wanyama sat in the double-pivot, whilst Steven Davis, Mane and Tadic Dušan tucked in behind lone striker Pelle. New boy Soares caught the eye with a number of raiding runs down the right, whilst Yoshida was unlucky not to find the net after missing a handful of opportunities.

After the match, Koeman highlighted his key performers:

“Jordy had a good understanding with Victor, who I thought was one of the best players on the pitch in my opinion. Cedric had good movements in the first half. He was dangerous in the attacking position. Maarten made a good save at 2-0 and you always like to have the goalkeeper in that kind of important moment saving the team. Mane was outstanding. He is fast and he had good movements in attack. He’s very difficult to defend in a good way against. He played well.”

The Saints boss conceded that Clasie is a doubt for the season opener at Newcastle after the midfielder was forced off just after the hour mark with a hamstring problem. Given that the return leg against Vitesse is just three days before their trip to St James’ Park, last night’s result may well persuade Koeman to rest some of his key players to avoid further injury headaches.

West Ham 2 AFC Astra Giurgiu 2

Goals from Enner Valencia and Mauro Zarate had placed Slaven Bilic’s side in the driving seat before the dismissal of James Collins allowed the visitors to claw back a two-goal deficit.

In terms of team selection, Bilic lined his side up in a 4-3-1-2 set-up, according to the club’s twitter feed. Adrian got the nod in goal, with O’Brien, Collins, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell in the back-four. Mark Noble, Reece Oxford and Cheikhou Kouyate patrolled the central midfield, with Dimitri Payet (who grabbed the assist for Valencia’s opener) handed the role in “the hole” behind the Ecuadorian and Zarate.

Bilic was unable to call upon suspended pair James Tomkins and Diafra Sakho for this one and will now need to make do without Collins and Joey O’Brien for the return leg next Thursday. The latter earned his third yellow of the tournament before being replaced due to injury, whilst Valencia was also forced off, adding to his manager’s woes.

Post-match, Bilic admitted he was somewhat concerned by Valencia’s injury after the forward – playing his first match since the Copa America – was stretchered off:

“I am worried to be fair. And this is the reason I am unhappy tonight. I am not happy with the result of course but this is not as important as the injury. It looks serious but we won’t know for sure until he has a scan.”

In spite of the draw, though, the Hammers boss confirmed that most of his starters for the Gameweek 1 trip to Arsenal will not take part in next Thursday’s return leg:

“It was the same plan, no matter what the result is, that the majority of the players who will start against Arsenal will not participate in that game. We would like to do both, but the Premier League was and is the priority for us.”

The Croatian faces a real defensive dilemma for the return leg next week, then. With Collins, Tomkins and O’Brien all suspended, he could turn to Reece Burke in light of his above comments. Carl Jenkinson is likely to play in O’Brien’s absence, though the former cannot feature against his parent club at the Emirates. With O’Brien a doubt for the Arsenal clash, the Hammers could be severely hampered at right-back for the opening day of the season, having also allowed Guy Demel to leave over the summer. Given that Alexis Sanchez is unlikely to feature for the hosts, Arsene Wenger may well choose to unleash Theo Walcott down the Arsenal left to take advantage.

Bromley Town 0 Crystal Palace 6

Patrick Bamford was the star of the show as the Eagles ran riot at Bromley Arena. The on-loan Chelsea striker grabbed a first-half hat-trick before being replaced at the break, whilst Sullay Kaikai, Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha also added their names to the score sheet.

Alan Pardew mainly called upon players who had failed to earn much pitch time in the club’s recent tour of South Africa. Alex McCarthy got the nod in goal, with a back-four of Martin Kelly, Brede Hangeland, Luke Croll and Christian Scales. Zaha, Jordon Mutch, Joe Ledley and Kaikai made up the midfield, allowing Gayle and Bamford to take their places up front. The Eagles boss made seven changes over the course of the second period, though Yannick Bolasie has yet to feature in recent matches due to an ongoing hamstring problem.

my Route to Aguero is currently, Pelle->5.5 Rooney-> Aguero. but its an exact fit and I imagine prices changing by that point... should I try and keep 0.5 ITB. I'd probably have to lose my only sub or downgrade one of my mids to do it though...

Yup.. the times are a changing. All the EPL clubs now have a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 set up giving us less strikers. maybe we got to accept this and shift to a 3-5-2 🙂

I'm starting with a 3-5-2. more mids than strikers at this point, so it makes sense. The only problem is that there's no 4.5 playing striker...

          • 16 Years

That is the only problem.. the 4.5 mids dont have much potential either tbh. Maybe Milner + Deeney/Bamford etc instead of Benteke +4.5 for eg could work.. similarly Chadli + 5.5 instead of Kane + a 4.5er

          +1 You are not alone.

Try to fit in the 5.0/5.5 contenders. If you nail it, you may even get a price rise. You are not getting that from any of the 4.5 mids.

At least for the first half of the season. Between the two of them, they will participate in a huge % of Chelsea's goals and individually will both be near the top of the midfield rankings. City away is perhaps the most difficult fixture of the season, yeah.

          • 16 Years
          10 years, 7 months ago

Indeed. So just wondering why you are starting the season with them when you could avoid the 'most difficult fixture of the season' and bring one of them in at a later date?

Surely you are better off with that cash spent elsewhere until THAT game is out the way?

One tough fixture out of a series of pretty good ones, though. I try not to start the season with pre-planned transfers but rather with a solid team as injuries and bandwagons will force our hand.

Besides, even one goal away at City could be double digit score for either / both of them.

    Will Young definitely start GW1?

Personally I think he will. Van Gaal in his latest interview said that he is going to play a 4-3-3 set up with Depay as the attacking midfielder. I'm assuming Young will play on the left flank while Mata will be on the right and obviously Rooney in the middle. Young has also been on top form and is only £6.0m which I feel could be a bargain. Thoughts?

When the big boys (Aguero Sanchez Hazard) are all fit and available, how many will it be reasonable to own at any one time? And how will it impact on having the likes of Costa Rooney Kane Silva etc? Whats the wisest way?

I actually am thinking owning only 1 of aguero hazard sanchez at any time is the wise move for a while. And use having one to make getting another easier when it suis.

      Milner for me

Nailed, nice home fixtures, was great fantasy wise when playing for Villa at CM, and had best mins played to chances created ratio of all PL players last season

    Ruddy (Henne)
    Francis | Huth | Azpil (O'Shea | S. Taylor)
Hazard | Ozil | Mata | Chadli (Fletcher)
    Costa - Pelle - Sakho

Money ITB to upgrade Costa > Aguero, not entirely sure to keep Costa in there yet, I'll see what Mourinho says about him closer to deadline.

What are your thoughts? Taylor's a bench fodder, same for Fletch really

Quick observation - don't start the season with non-playing players. Your forward line is light.

I'm afraid it's only my best guess, but:

      Bournemouth - Francis/Elphick/Distin/Mings
      Norwich - Wisdom/Martin/Bassong/Olsson (currently injured)
      Watford - Nyom/Proedl/Cathcart/Holebas

        - Cook could come in at centre back for either of Elphick/Distin.

        - Wisdom and Martin could be the other way round, or Whittaker could come in at right back. It's unclear who their stand in left back will be... Maybe this young lad who's been in friendlies, Toffolo I think it is, Brady could cover there, or maybe Whittaker.

        - Angella and Britos could come in at centre back, but Britos is suspended for a game or two I think. Paredes on the right and Anya on the left are also options, but they seem more suited to playing as wing backs in last season's 3-5-2 to full backs in Flores' preferred 4-2-3-1.

Mert - Arse have a good run at the start plus Cech behind them now

I wouldn't trust ManU defence unless they sign another CB

      Liverpoos.

Im confused on this one as well. I was thinking of going with Shaw looking at the fixtures - think he may have good assist potential too.

    Thoughts on Falcao?

    Also - 5.0 Def??

Falcao only starts if Costa is injured. Which happens too often, admittedly but even then, Remy could be higher than him.

Will be better than at Man U, but not yet a Fantasy asset.

      Cedric is a fantastic option.

I would guess he'll start on the bench against Newcastle. Think Koeman will ease him into it. He's certainly not secure for 90 mins yet.

Both Cedric and Wanyama should start on GW1, but could be rotated a few times. But still look great Fantasy-wise, especially Cedric.

I think when fit they'll play 9 times out of 10. Koeman isn't big on rotation, particularly in defensive areas. Even in cups last season he kept a strong side.

    RMT plz;

    Cech - Kasper
    Clyne - Azpi - Cedric - Morgan - S.Taylor
    Hazard - Hendo - Chadli - Walcott - Albrighton
    Rooney - Benteke - Wilson

Is it worth downgrading Wally to Ki sun Yun for example and get Kane upfront for more firepower?
Or should I stick to Wally? Or simply swap Wally for Silva/Sterling?
What about Chadli? Will he start for Spurs?

    1. Gunners n' Roses
      • 12 Years

      1.5/2
      1/2
      2/3
      2.5/3

      7/10

      Not worthwile. Srick to Wally.

You may want to switch Chadli though. Nailed on, but Sterling for example, has more firepower IMO.

Help appreciated on my present team and dilemma

    Schmeichel

    Kos/Cedric/Azpi

    Haz/Walcott Silva/Hendo

    Kane/Lukaku/C Wilson

    Bench -Ruddy/Fletcher /Huth/Francis

(Lukaku only for week 1 probably as captain if fit and then change to Pelle for week 2 at same price)

My dilemma is whether to start Walcott or double up to Giroud/Ozil. If start Walcott as above can bring Kane into attack and need 5th m/f to be 4.5m (gone at present for Fletcher)

If go with Ozil/Giroud could upgrade to 5th midfielder at 5.5m (Schneiderlein in mind) or keep Fletcher and upgrade Henderson to Siggy or Mane

To bring in Aguero for Lukaku changes to team above would mean Haz to Fab, Walcott to Ozil and Silva to a 7.0/7.5/8.0 m (probably Mane, Chadli or Tadic)
