In our next article on the Sky Sports Fantasy game, we assess our captaincy options. This includes the various ways you can change your captain and also incorporates our preferred strategy up until the end of September. The aim, of course, is to try and exploit this feature to our benefit and increase our points potential.

As in most Fantasy games with a captaincy option, the player with the armband earns you double points, be it positive or negative. For a look at all the rules in the Sky Sports game, click here.

Swapping the armband

Fantasy managers are handed ONE swap per Gameweek and a Gameweek runs from Friday at 00.01am until 00:00 the following Thursday. This is different from last season, to take into account Friday matches, which occurs in Gameweek 2 when Villa host United. The trick here, of course, is to have your captained player featuring early in the Gameweek and then use your one swap to a player who takes to the field later in the week, therefore getting two captains out of your one change. In order to repeat this process, though, the player you selected as your captain for the Sunday/Monday should ideally play next week on the Saturday.

Banking

On occasion you may wish to ‘bank’ your captain swap – for example your captain plays on the Saturday but none of the matches over the Sunday and/or Monday look appealing. Instead of letting it go to waste, it’s a good idea to use your swap after the fixtures but before the current Gameweek has finished (best to wait up until Thursday evening in case of injuries etc) to set yourself up for the incoming rounds of fixtures choosing a player who features early of course.

Transferring Skippers

If you transfer your current captain out of your team and acquire a replacement, the incoming player will take over the armband and this will not use your one allocated swap. This tactic can work in two ways – you can make the trade and still have a captain switch to follow or, if you’ve already changed your captains, the transfer gives you another armband option for the Gameweek. You can also transfer your captain out multiple times if it’s a week with fixtures also on the Tuesday and Wednesday, for example, and have multiple captains in a given round of matches.

Playing the Blanks

When the Premier League takes a break for international or FA Cup matches, the blank week still has relevance when it comes to captain swaps, as it still counts as a Gameweek. This means you can use your one captain swap during this week and so be more adventurous with your armband choices the weekend beforehand.

Risk/Reward Tactics

Over the course of the season all these scenarios will feature in our strategies. As we assess each Gameweek, the risk/reward of using player transfers will have to be balanced, as quite often I found that quality out performed quantity and so having Sergio Aguero as my one skipper for the week could outperform using transfers to have Sadio Mane twice, for example – again, it’s a judgement call and can go either way. Planning your captaincies well in advance has its advantages as it means you can determine which route to navigate through the fixtures and not end up stuck with an unwanted armband choice and forced into a transfer. As always, though, injuries and form come into the equation and it’s important to remain flexible and re-write your plan regularly to stay on top of the game.

Our captain plan

In truth, this season is a bit of a nightmare when it comes to captain strategy – with the way that fixtures have fallen, we’re rarely afforded a strong Saturday/Sunday rotation. Here we bring you the most cautious approach we could find that still uses premium options from the top teams; this is without using any transfers, so misses out on quite a few opportunities for additional captains. Nonetheless, we think it’s a good blue print to use as a starting point, allowing you to add in extra captains at your discretion.

Following this means that as long as you have a player from Arsenal, Man United and Man City, you should have no issues navigating the first eight Gameweeks. As already mentioned, there are several blank fixtures, whereby using a transfer or targeting a player from a “lesser team” that has good Saturday to Sunday to Saturday rotation will result in more captains but with a possible loss in quality. This is probably the hardest part of the Sky game to get right – whether to take the plunge and spend transfers for extra captains or hide behind the sofa and hope playing safe works out. In the end it comes down to a judgement call and a little luck.

If you have followed our articles up until now and you add this plan to your repertoire you should be armed with all you need for a successful season.

    Schmeichel, Hennessey

    Azpilicueta, Mertesacker, Soares, Francis, Turner

    Hazard, Özil, Mané, Henderson, Wanyama

    Rooney, Kane, Sakho

I have £0.5 mil in the bank to do Rooney>Aguero in game week 4 and downgrade Mane to a £6 mil midfielder.
Unless anyone suggests I spend all the money now and downgrade Mane to a £5.5 mil who would have to start every game?

I think Soares is going to be gold at some point this season but I don't like the fixtures to start with.

Not sure Azpil is value. He got quite a few bals last year but shouldn't get as many with the new system.

Every Dog quoted the previous season. So did I. And the point I am making is entirely correct whether you like it or not.

Looking at his peripherals, Cabella was also deeply unlucky (and playing in a dysfunctional team). The perils of looking at single seasons!

The "point" is that dismissing Kramaric and Cabella for their goalscoring record in single seasons in a different league is no better than praising Gradel for his. They're equally unsophisticated arguments.

But I'm not dismissing them. Cabella is on my watchlist and pencilled in as a possible GW9 transfer. I have my eyes on Kramaric too under Ranieri once he starts getting games. That's how I am aware of the numbers.

I think you are arguing for the sake of it to be honest. The point I was making by the Kramaric comparison was and is simple, straightforward and correct.

Compare the Croatian league to Ligue 1. Yeah, Ligue 1 is much more harder.

41 games 18 goals and 7 assists in his season with Leeds. (2010/11 when he was in England)

That is Championship level. Think that's a surefire guide?

The point is that you can't automatically transfer success in another league to the PL. Di Maria being another example. Lukaku scored 20 goals last season yet people discount his abilities because only 10 of those were scored in the PL. For some reason EL knockout stages (8 goals) don't count. 😕

"31 games 17 goals and 4 assists. He will be a good pick." Sorry, but that's a very poorly judged comment.

From when I've seen Gradel play he is someone who looks like they suite the Premier League, he's reminds me of a Ivorian Walcott. (When Theo's fit) But that's just my opinion. BPL and Ligue 1 and two completely different leagues but he;ll come straight into my team if he's 5.5.

      Interesting choices.

But Berahino is a risk with Lambert.
Ki is not good enough to be starting in your first 11 most weeks unless you are playing with 3 mids which is strange and which would require your defence to be upgraded.
Also Aguero will not play GW1

Not expected much defensively. I think Richards is a great signing for us if he stays fit though. Amavi too but I imagine he will help more in an attacking sense.

I'm optimistic for the season ahead only worry s it takes a few games for the team to gel. Hopefully we don't sign Adebayor because I like the look of Gestede and want him to get games

Gestede has very good FPL potential I think. As does Sinclair if he is starting.

If Villa could tighten up defensively an OOP Bacuna could as well. But that may be asking too much of a Sherwood team. 😕

Bacuna could be good even without a tight defence! Wanted him in my team but couldn't find room for him. I'm starting with Sinclair as a bit of a gamble. Agree Gestede could be great but think from GW1 would be too risky.

You would think so given he plays as a RW. However, LVG is definitely capable of playing a RW at LW, LW at AM and AM at RW so I wouldn't want to put money on it.

Eriksen. Depay's the only one that might be preferable but as he's new to PL that's guesswork to some degree as yet.

I would prefer Eriksen to any Arsenal 8.5 as well by the way if we are talking about a run of games and not just GW1.

Gomez, Kaboul and Targett all not nailed, downgrade Ritchie -> 4.5 and change Silva to an arsenal mid, try and get in Haz and then Maybe Cech -> ruddy, Ivan -> Azpi and sort of the rest of the defence (Coates, Cedric etc.)

Thanks. Silva my Aguero placeholder (with Rooney) so will hold.

Azpi not nailed so would downgrade to Clyne and lose Gomez (who could be a steal at 4.5m and looking likely to beat Moreno for a start). Coates over Kaboul then? Targett is a filler at 4M and will start until Betrand is fit.

Haz just too much money. Working on getting Sanchez when fit, happy with Fab (assist king).

Think Cech could be GK of season at Arsenal (he looked good on Sunday)

In my team from the off... very good scoring record, potentially could be their penalty taker due to his high conversion rate... can see him working well in partnership with Berahino (big man/little man)... potential bargain at £6m I think

Pelle. Southampton have good enough fixtures to warrant at least one attacking options, Pelle has fewer competitors for a place in our teams than Mane, he's proven he can be a quality fpl player, he's nailed on in a side he has already settled into. And slightly cheaper on top of that.

What do ppl think of this midfield/attack setup?

    Haz Ozil Mane Milner Ox
    Rooney Pelle Sakho

money in the bank so can do Ox>4.5 and Rooney>Aguero whenever that seems best. Would start with Sakho on bench for GW1.

Maybe slightly punty. Can't decide if I like it, or better to go cheap 5th mid and use the money elsewhere. Any help?

Risky with the Ox. Get a 4.5 and bench him mate.

yh he'd be my gamble I guess. Would think he's got a chance of outscoring Sakho GW1 though?

I agree, a little too punty. Ox is far too much of a gamble with so many other midfield options. Mane and Pelle might be overkill too. But not too far away from a good front 7.

Out of interest who do you think best midfield options are at that price (6.0)? I think other option would be to scrap him and go cheap as poss for 5th mid

I have gone for Ritchie myself but I like Mahrez too. And for 0.5 cheaper. There is also Ashley Young who will start against Spurs but will lose his place to Pedro I would imagine.

Despite the great showing during the CS Ox has a lot to do to nail down a place. Chances are he will be on the bench more often than not.

As nice as it is to see another Arsenal shirt in your team I think Ritchie kr Mahrrz would be better picks. They both have a good fixture week 1 too, whereas Sakho doesn't

yh agree. I was thinking Ox short term while Sanchez is not around, then downgrade to get Aguero.

Milner and hendo? and reason for your opinion

    1. Doctor X

Milner as I think he'll be a little more forward playing than Henderson. Benteke might take penalties off Hendo, so I'm going with Milner.

Milner because I think he will be in the thick of the action more so then Hendo

He is going to be leading line oop against a lack luster west ham, his pace, sharpness and was obviously being kept fresh in c's.

        Hazard Walcott Mane Sterling Bentaleb
        Rooney Tekkers Sakho

All mid bar Hazard are players of choice from the team with easy fixtures.
Hazard is downgradeable to up def, but captaincy choice week 1.

If only Theo is nailed on

Uh Hazard just ruins the balance. Just need 1m to get Merte instead of Holebas. But I need him for captaincy.

Which milf would you downgrade Berb?

        Hazard Theo Mane Sterling

Probably, don't like any of the 4.0 defs. They'll be a problem unless you're using your WC very early.

        I'll WC on GW8

mine's tighter, but i'm wildcarding early and i consider the defence a lottery early on, better value elsewhere.

Yeah guessing defense is all based on fixture and past season form. My thinking of just loading more on attacks

No, don't think so. I have exactly the same pts spread. Although I've gone for Azpi, Alder, O'shea, Mings and Targett. I don't like the Holebas pick but that's just me.
