[sbu_large_image] Scout Picks

As Mark mentioned yesterday, the new tweaks to our Scout Picks selection process means that every Tuesday, we’ll be rolling out a squad of players that encompass many of the ongoing debates behind the scenes. This list of players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as each week progresses.

For Gameweek 1, though, here’s our current thinking…

Goalkeepers

Leicester’s home clash with Sunderland brings both Kasper Schmeichel and Costel Pantilimon onto our radar. The Foxes racked up five clean sheets in their last seven in 2014/15 and with new manager Claudio Ranieri keeping faith in a 3-4-1-2 set-up, they’ll be hoping for continuity against a Black Cats side that scored just 15 times on their travels last term. Pantilimon’s average of 4.4 points per appearance looks set to be boosted further by the changes to the BPS which reward saves, whilst Sunderland’s record on the road last year (six clean sheets, as opposed to five at home) indicates they can shut up shop away from the Stadium of Light. Bournemouth’s Artur Boruc is another name being bandied about, given that visitors Villa scored 13 away goals over 2014/15 – fewer than any other side.

Defenders

We have dilemmas in the Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton defences ahead of their home clashes. Laurent Koscielny is pricier than Hector Bellerin (6.0 to 5.5) and should benefit from the change to the BPS rules on Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions, though Bellerin seems to have edged ahead of Mathieu Debuchy for the right-back berth and surely did enough against Chelsea to maintain his role for the visit of West Ham on Sunday.

Branislav Ivanovic’s attacking potential may well bring him into the Picks ahead of team-mate Cesar Azplicueta, though the latter’s price of 6.0, compared to the Serbian’s 7.0, obviously helps free up cash for further up the field.

Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman entertain Watford at Goodison before the schedule turns against Everton. Jagielka remains cheaper than the right-back, at 5.5 to 6.0, and, like Koscielny, will be favoured by the BPS change, though Coleman’s raids down the right will surely trouble the Hornets.

Simon Francis and Leandro Bacuna also come into contention ahead of Bournemouth’s home encounter with Villa. At 4.5, Francis produced more key passes than any defender in the Championship last year, whilst Bacuna (5.0) has been stationed on the right of midfield over the pre-season, potentially affording us an out-of-position option at the back.

Midfielders

In the centre of the park, a number of premium assets are jostling for our attention. For Arsenal, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil are the chief protagonists. Walcott’s start up front in the Community Shield suggests he’s edged ahead of Olivier Giroud for the lone striker role, though his withdrawal on 66 minutes at Wembley is a worry. Ozil, meanwhile, was arguably the most in-form Arsenal player over the summer and looks nailed on, regardless.

Eden Hazard – leader of this week’s Captain Poll – looks the safest route into Chelsea’s attack, with concerns once again hovering over Diego Costa’s hamstring. City duo Raheem Sterling and David Silva have both shone in pre-season and with doubts over Sergio Aguero’s availability, the City midfield may be the best option here. Southampton’s Sadio Mane was second only to Alexis Sanchez for minutes per goal amongst midfielders last year and could easily run riot against Newcastle’s dodgy defence on Sunday.

Further down the price bracket, Matt Ritchie (15 goals, 17 assists last year) faces a Villa side that conceded more than two goals per match under Tim Sherwood, whilst Scott Sinclair and Riyad Mahrez have both impressed in recent pre-season outings and come in at just 5.0 and 5.5 respectively. Concerns over the fitness of Yohan Cabaye and Yannick Bolasie elevate Jason Puncheon in our thinking for Palace’s trip to Carrow Road.

Forwards

At present, we’re going without Sergio Aguero unless he’s passed fit by Manuel Pellegrini on Friday afternoon. Diego Costa’s hamstring is causing concern – the Spain international was passed fit by Jose Mourinho prior to Sunday’s Community Shield only to be ruled out injured on the day. Costa scored five goals against weekend opponents Swansea last year, though, so we’re keeping an eye on Mourinho’s press briefing before making any decisions here.

Wayne Rooney is set to lead the line for United at home to Spurs. Second only to Hazard in the Captain Poll, he seems a safer option for the Red Devils, with new boy Memphis Depay perhaps taking time to settle. Romelu Lukaku looks poised to recover from a hamstring problem as the Toffees welcome Watford to Goodison and, like Graziano Pelle, comes in at 8.0. The duo have scored ten times between them in pre-season, with the Italian leading the way by six strikes to four. Finally, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson – at just 5.5 – is our preferred budget forward and his pace should pose Villa’s dodgy defence problems aplenty.

Community Champion

Representing the Community in Gameweek 1 will be regular poster Fuzzy Warbles, who is now in his sixth FPL season. Although he has never breached the top 10,000 he came mighty close in 2010/11 with a rank of 10,085. Last season saw a return to form with a rank of 24,104, some 50,000 places higher than his 2013/14 tally.

    Do rate my team

    ruddy(butland)

    Francis,azpi,cedric,bellerin,huth

    mane,henderson,hazard,ozil,ritchie

    kane,rooney,graham

what should i start with 4-4-2 or 3-5-2?

i don't want to bench francis or cedric for 1st gameweek?

Look's set for a 352. But personally, If I were to play that formation I'd have Sakho instead of Kane and instead upgrade Ritchie, Henderson and the defence if needed.

Right now, 36.7% have selected kane.Highest for Striker till now. I don't want to miss the big points he brought last season.
I am planning to switch henderson->Scott Sinclair or Riyad Mahrez but i am afraid that i willn't have any liverpool player.

Whom to leave in the bench?

A continuation to my Arsenal mids poll:

    1. Surprised to see so many going for Wally. Wondering if getting subbed out after 60 odd minutes and having Giroud perform comparatively better doesn't worry the choice of sticking with him?

    2. And as for a solid 8.5, isn't Caz the more favorable option, looking sharp vs Chelsea, more nailed than anyone, and also being on pens. Was wondering why so many have instead gone with Ozil/Rambo?

    Cheers, once again.

      1. No doubt he's risky, but has a huge 'up' side.

      2. They are all good options really. People are put off by the fact that he plays deeper as one of the 2 in a 4-2-3-1

Just swapped Øzil for Ramsey - form and goal threat, playing further up than Caz. Caz is reliant on quite a few pens to repeat last season I guess. But not much between it

There are 3 'nailed' players for Arsenal - Cech, Coquelin and Ozil.

Because they are all the best at what they do in that team.

Ooooh very cheeky to dig that up......
He was replaced because he was struggling with fatigue, which could happen to every midfielder in the EPL. He is as nailed on as Matic is at Chelsea, in that he performs his task better than everyone else.

              This is my point

    repost, which combo?

    A) Mertesacker
    Hazard
    Tadic/lens
    Mata

    OR

    B) Azpilicueta
    Fàbregas
    sterling
    Walcott

    thanks

      B for me.
Haz is not worth the extra spend. He is consistent but not explosive (I don't think he got 12 in a week last season) and the extra cash can be better used elsewhere.
Azpi is certainly a better option than Merte because despite the lack of attacking returns and bonus, the Chelsea defence is just better. They will end the season with at least 3 or 4 more clean sheets than Arsenal and Merte may become a rotation risk with Gabriel and Chambers.
I would go Ozil or Ramsey over Walcott as they are safer for consistent minutes but Walcott could explode early on.

I have Ozil and Costa locked into my side and am now choosing between Fab and Ramsey.

    Fab
    +Always starts well
+Better finishers around him to assists likely
+Having both Fab and Costa means that Haz getting points is less likely to hurt me as odds are one of mine gets the assist/finishes off the move
-Rarely gets in shooting positions, puts a lot of pressure on keeping his unsustainably high assists up
-Likely to be closed down a lot more as teams figure out he is key to Chelsea and sit the ST on him

    Ramsey
+Always scores points throughout the season when fit
+Looks to be playing higher up the pitch than normal as Santi settles into a deeper role
+Extra 0.5m is useful but unlikely to use it as like my current team
-Slight rotation risk and subbed off quite often
-Hardly the focal point of Arsenal whilst everything goes through Fab

Really struggling, any thoughts are good.

Completely disagree about Haz. He isn't that much better than the players who are quite a bit cheaper. He is very consistent but towards the end of the season he has the key man at Chelsea where as now Costa is back Hazard could play a less key role. He is just too expensive, I have drafts with and without him and the without him team looks a lot more balanced.
Last season he got about 25 more points than Sanchez despite starting every single game. Sanchez missed quite a few and had some really poor patches. If you had Sanchez when he looked good and then a player like Hendo or Chadli at the right times, you would significantly outscore Hazard.
Hazard is a safe bet who consistently gets points but unless I am remembering incorrectly, he never scored more than 12 points in a game so it is hard to cry about not having him.

I think I'd be tempted by Ramsey. It's probably a bit more punty, the extra .5 could go a long way if you miss out on a price rise in the first few weeks, or "Aguero-fund." Also I have Rambo and I'd feel a lot more safe if a few people out there have him.

I'm pretty settled on this team (until tomorrow)...

    Schmeichel/Butland
    Azpi Darmian Target (Alderweireld/Francis)
    Fabregas Mane Coutinho Walcott Richie
    Rooney Kane (Deeney)
    + .5 in bank

My thoughts are to rotate one of Targett/Alder/Francis in a back 3 (mostly Alder in unless he has a terrible fixture like Man away on sat).

    Then I'll rotate Richie/Deeney depending on form/fixtures.

I think it's a very balanced squad 2 premium defenders, 4 decent mids, 2 premium forwards and enough room to rotate for injuries / players being dropped.

I know the glaringly obvious thing is that there is no Hazard, but that 2.5 goes a long way in my opinion. I'd have to downgrade Cout/Walcott to a 5/6m player which I am planning on doing once Aguero is firing.

So let's say Costa is ruled out gw1, who starts...Falcao or Remy and would you be tempted by either even as a short term punt?

I don't see it to be honest... My money is on Falcao, and if he fired Gw1 we could have a very ineteresting option.

But only for the 1st game coz Costa will be back GW2 I reckon.
Falcao is a no go for me, looks completely out of pace and mentally he is not there.

Anyone else watching the Audi Cup? Real Madrid v Spurs on now, then Bayern Munich v AC Milan after.

Spurs usual setup with Kane and Ericson behind him, but noticed Dier is in midfield though.

West Brom are hit and miss, particularly when it comes to creating attacking opportunities. Lambert's arrival could push him to the flank and their first few fixtures look tough. A price tag of 6.5 is a little too steep

First time playing FPL, any suggestions with this? Anything that I'm obviously missing?

    Pantilimon - (Ruddy)
    Skrtel - Cresswell - Prodl - Martin - Morgan
    Hazard - Milner - Walcott - Schneiderlin - Ritchie
    Kane - Rooney - Sakho

Schneiderlin-Ritchie might be a bit of a bench headache - personally I'd mostly play Ritchie but Scheids is an expensive 5th mid. Maybe downgrade to save more money?

    Hi guys, some advice please:

    A. Deeney / Mane (& £0.5m)

    B. Pelle / Ritchie

My front 3 of Rooney, Benteke & Pelle looks strong with option B.
Midfield is Hazard, Theo, Sterling, ***** (Bentaleb).

Mane's goalscoring record per min is only second to that of Alexis.

Mane carried the Saints side in the latter half of the season. He was a bundle of raw skill that Koeman has been busy refining, and I've been strongly tempted to opt for him. Having said that, he performed when Pelle was out of form and Tadic had injury niggles. Pelle seems to have found his goalscoring boots again and Tadic is fully recovered. This is key, as the two link up so well and I reckon this makes Pelle more likely to be on the score sheet. Having one of the two (or Tadic) I think is essential, as Southampton's run of fixtures are great for the first few weeks. I have opted for Pelle personally

If Dzeko leaves to Roma, City will be short on strikers. I expect them to buy another one before the end of the transfer window
