As Mark mentioned yesterday, the new tweaks to our Scout Picks selection process means that every Tuesday, we’ll be rolling out a squad of players that encompass many of the ongoing debates behind the scenes. This list of players also includes some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as each week progresses.

For Gameweek 1, though, here’s our current thinking…

Goalkeepers

Leicester’s home clash with Sunderland brings both Kasper Schmeichel and Costel Pantilimon onto our radar. The Foxes racked up five clean sheets in their last seven in 2014/15 and with new manager Claudio Ranieri keeping faith in a 3-4-1-2 set-up, they’ll be hoping for continuity against a Black Cats side that scored just 15 times on their travels last term. Pantilimon’s average of 4.4 points per appearance looks set to be boosted further by the changes to the BPS which reward saves, whilst Sunderland’s record on the road last year (six clean sheets, as opposed to five at home) indicates they can shut up shop away from the Stadium of Light. Bournemouth’s Artur Boruc is another name being bandied about, given that visitors Villa scored 13 away goals over 2014/15 – fewer than any other side.

Defenders

We have dilemmas in the Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton defences ahead of their home clashes. Laurent Koscielny is pricier than Hector Bellerin (6.0 to 5.5) and should benefit from the change to the BPS rules on Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions, though Bellerin seems to have edged ahead of Mathieu Debuchy for the right-back berth and surely did enough against Chelsea to maintain his role for the visit of West Ham on Sunday.

Branislav Ivanovic’s attacking potential may well bring him into the Picks ahead of team-mate Cesar Azplicueta, though the latter’s price of 6.0, compared to the Serbian’s 7.0, obviously helps free up cash for further up the field.

Phil Jagielka and Seamus Coleman entertain Watford at Goodison before the schedule turns against Everton. Jagielka remains cheaper than the right-back, at 5.5 to 6.0, and, like Koscielny, will be favoured by the BPS change, though Coleman’s raids down the right will surely trouble the Hornets.

Simon Francis and Leandro Bacuna also come into contention ahead of Bournemouth’s home encounter with Villa. At 4.5, Francis produced more key passes than any defender in the Championship last year, whilst Bacuna (5.0) has been stationed on the right of midfield over the pre-season, potentially affording us an out-of-position option at the back.

Midfielders

In the centre of the park, a number of premium assets are jostling for our attention. For Arsenal, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil are the chief protagonists. Walcott’s start up front in the Community Shield suggests he’s edged ahead of Olivier Giroud for the lone striker role, though his withdrawal on 66 minutes at Wembley is a worry. Ozil, meanwhile, was arguably the most in-form Arsenal player over the summer and looks nailed on, regardless.

Eden Hazard – leader of this week’s Captain Poll – looks the safest route into Chelsea’s attack, with concerns once again hovering over Diego Costa’s hamstring. City duo Raheem Sterling and David Silva have both shone in pre-season and with doubts over Sergio Aguero’s availability, the City midfield may be the best option here. Southampton’s Sadio Mane was second only to Alexis Sanchez for minutes per goal amongst midfielders last year and could easily run riot against Newcastle’s dodgy defence on Sunday.

Further down the price bracket, Matt Ritchie (15 goals, 17 assists last year) faces a Villa side that conceded more than two goals per match under Tim Sherwood, whilst Scott Sinclair and Riyad Mahrez have both impressed in recent pre-season outings and come in at just 5.0 and 5.5 respectively. Concerns over the fitness of Yohan Cabaye and Yannick Bolasie elevate Jason Puncheon in our thinking for Palace’s trip to Carrow Road.

Forwards

At present, we’re going without Sergio Aguero unless he’s passed fit by Manuel Pellegrini on Friday afternoon. Diego Costa’s hamstring is causing concern – the Spain international was passed fit by Jose Mourinho prior to Sunday’s Community Shield only to be ruled out injured on the day. Costa scored five goals against weekend opponents Swansea last year, though, so we’re keeping an eye on Mourinho’s press briefing before making any decisions here.

Wayne Rooney is set to lead the line for United at home to Spurs. Second only to Hazard in the Captain Poll, he seems a safer option for the Red Devils, with new boy Memphis Depay perhaps taking time to settle. Romelu Lukaku looks poised to recover from a hamstring problem as the Toffees welcome Watford to Goodison and, like Graziano Pelle, comes in at 8.0. The duo have scored ten times between them in pre-season, with the Italian leading the way by six strikes to four. Finally, Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson – at just 5.5 – is our preferred budget forward and his pace should pose Villa’s dodgy defence problems aplenty.

Community Champion

Representing the Community in Gameweek 1 will be regular poster Fuzzy Warbles, who is now in his sixth FPL season. Although he has never breached the top 10,000 he came mighty close in 2010/11 with a rank of 10,085. Last season saw a return to form with a rank of 24,104, some 50,000 places higher than his 2013/14 tally.

butland / fletcher / gomez / van aanholt

    Currently looking like:

    Ruddy/Butland
    Azp Mertesacker Cedric Huth Mings
    Hazard Ozil Henderson Mata Fletcher
    Rooney Sakho Benteke

    Along the right lines?

Mata the best 8.5? Or is Depay the better pick?

Am I the only person on here which is deploying a super cheap bench? It allows you to make an unreal team! but everyone on here seems to be obsessed with rotating with cheaper players. Whats everyone thoughts?

      • 12 Years

I'm going with a basically non-playing bench to start in order to have some tasty options - high-risk but good fun! Not the greatest tactic if you are going for OR, but a good laugh if you are doing a mini league with mates basically!

Same price. What would you choose? I bring this up firstly because it's in my thinking, and secondly because there are so many teams with Tekkers and Mane in them.

    A) Ivanovic + Koscielny + Henderson + Pelle

    B) Azpilicueta + Mertesacker + Mane + Benteke

Yep I have Ozil. It's more about whether having Henderson + Pelle and 1.5m to spend elsewhere is worth it ahead of Mane and Tekkers

Rate my team or any suggestions:

    Cech
    Koscielny - Azpilicueta - Cédric
    Sánchez - Hazard - Sterling - Sinclair
    Rooney - Benteke - Wilson

Bench - Henessey, Wanyama, Steven Taylor, Baker

    Walcott/Ramsey/Ozil/Cazorla

Who would you pick in your team?

Walcott didn't played that well in chelsea match. Is his place nailed on? What about Giroud?

I want to have Walcott but looking at his game against chelsea,i don't know whether he will start or not as there is only one place between giroud and walcott. Wenger is one crazy guy

Hell yeah Wenger always troll you :p

cazorla - safest pick (maybe 80-90 mpg & takes dead ball)
Ozil - 80-90 mpg, better chance for scoring than santi
walcott - high risk high return
Ramsey - maybe only 60-70 mpg

      I go with Ozil

    Panti - Hennessey

I've used the 4-5-1 on multiple occasions (a ton last season with Kuhn or Costa up top) and finished top 12k. With the number of strong midfield options this season I think it's a great strategy and will help differentiate your squad from the pack.

I've got Hazard Ozil Sterling Mane & Depay all lined up for this weekend with Rooney up top as a lone striker.

Ah but you have all 5 strong mid options, if i were to go that route i would probably be playing a £5m 5th mid. Just tinkering with the idea for the first GW:

Haz, Walcott, Ozil, Mane, £5m, Rooney

But i do agree, last year there were so many decent budget options that it opened up a whole range of formation possibilities.

morning! picking up where I left off yesterday, this is my current draft (started last night, marginally keeping up with trends and facts):

    Schmeichel - Butland
    Kosc - Azpi - Cedric - PvA - Gomez
    Haz - Ozil - Depay - Chadli - Ritchie
    Benteke - Pelle - Deeney

I like it, but I also like the idea of having an XI and sticking to it with only the defense having rotation with the cheaper players (basically in a 343, a 4.5m mid that you never really play but can rely on for 2-3 points no matter what)

    thoughts?

    Draft #347 is

    Cech (Schwarzer)
    Kosc Clyne Cedric (Huth) (Baker)
    Haz Ozil Mane Hendo Ritchie
    Roondog Tekkers (Deeney)

    Toying with

    A Cech Schwarzer Mane Tekkers
    B Pants Ruddy Depay Pelle

You're right he may not be a cert starter but was just going to use him as 3rd sub bench fodder. What 4.5 would you upgrade to?

Think Wilson and Ki will do well. Sinclair's a gamble so yeh I think that's where I need to upgrade.

Would upgrade defence or get a better 4th mid but looks like youll be rotating Sinclair/Ki/Wilson so maybe best to stick with.

The other option is get a better 4th mid and make 2 transfers with Rooney for Kun

Yeh I think I'll upgrade Sinclair. Too much of a gamble atm. Will wait on him.

What 6-7m midfielders do you rate?

Theres not much choice in that range unfortunately, popular choices would be Ritchie, Milner/Henderson, Chadli. The latter being my pick.

    1) Morgan or Huth or any other 4.5 DEF

    2) Benteke or Kane? I've got Hendo and Chadli in MID.

After a lot of thinking, I've come up with my first draft. Please RMT:

    Panti - Hennessey
    Azpi - Bellerin - Clyne - Huth - Coates
    Hazard - Ozil - Silva - Schneiderlin - Wanyama
    Lukaku - Costa - Deeney

    0.5 in the bank

      No to Schneiderlin for me

I would downgrade Silva & upgrade Schneiderlin. Would also rather Mert over Bellerin.. There are no guarantees that he will get the nod.

I switched Silva with Cazorla, and upgraded Schneiderlin to Henderson. I'm also considering getting Mert for Bellerin, however, I'm hoping Bellerin will step it up in attack and maybe get an assist or two.
        Thanks for your help!!

Any advice or comment will be appreciated! Please kindly RMT.

    Cech, Schmeichel
    Clyne, Ivan, Fonte, Turner, Targett
Sterling, Caz, Memphis, Haz, Mahrez (C)
    Lambert, Kane, Deeney

    Good to go?

Mahrez (c)?? No need for Schmeichel when you should be starting Cech every game.. Get Hennessey in there. Think Clyne is a poor investment as Liverpool's defence is shaky to say the least. Mid is crazy expensive and is making your strikeforce suffer. I would downgrade Sterling. Lambert and Deeney need upgrading.

I would probably take either Clynne or Fonte along with Turner and Targett and turn them into 3 rotating 4.5 defenders. Better value, less risk. When a starting 4.0 emerges, you can downgrade.

Quick question... I was looking at Simon March (Last year's overall winner) proposed team for this season and he has a very cheap defence. Cedric and a load of 4.5s. I also remember him saying that early on cheap defence is the way to go in a previous podcast.

With this in mind is there any logic to me ditching Koscielny and Ivan for 4.5s which will mean I have Sterling instead of Sinclair?

I'm guessing he knows better than anyone about these things...

There's an old article on this site where the 2009-10 winner talks about the same defender strategy.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2010/05/30/an-interview-with-jon-reeson/

So it seems to have worked for more than 1 champion.

Maybe he's trying to throw people off! I think you need at least 1 Premium defender

24.5 is my total defence, so still fairly cheap

Clean sheets for the big teams were hard to come by in the first 6 weeks of last season - it's something to consider but risky if Arsenal and Chelsea keep 3 clean sheets in the first 3 weeks.

Chelsea and Arsenal kept one clean sheet in GW 1-3 last year, Chelsea at home to LEI. I don't think the risk is that high. The big teams take longer to get going, and their defenders are worth more in the second half of the season as the weaker teams wear down.

I do have Ivan, though. 3 of his 7 goals over the past two years have come in August. He starts fast, and Chelsea should be good for a clean sheet or two in the opening weeks.

I had no idea he was taking that approach. I've filled my backline with 4.5s so I'm pleased to hear I'm in good company.
