Welcome to the Weekly Shop – a new, midweek article where I’ll take an early look at those players under consideration for our squads across weekly and daily Fantasy Football games.

Rather than offer you our final selections, the idea is to focus on the potential recruits to monitor before entering teams into weekly leagues and contests, regardless of which game you are playing.

We’ve divided this early scouting into two sections, “skilfully” retaining the shopping theme.

The “Better Buys” will look at the key players for the week ahead, generally those that have shown consistent form or whose team have a promising fixture. The “Poundstretchers”, on the other hand, are the Gameweek prospects that should offer excellent value – often one-week punts, whose lower price tags enable funds to be spent on the big-hitters elsewhere in our lineups.

Better Buys

For those willing to spend a little extra between the posts, Arsenal’s new signing Petr Cech – available for 7.7m in PlayON and 8.3m in Premier Punt – leads the list of must-have keepers this week.

West Ham visit the Emirates having found the net in just two of their last nine away matches in the run-in last term, making two or even three acquisitions from Arsenal’s backline a tempting strategy. Hector Bellerin could also find a place in our teams, then, with his pricing exactly the same as Cech in both games.

Although Branislav Ivanovic has a history of early-season hauls, at 10.5m in Premier Punt and 9.5m in PlayON the value of including Chelsea’s right-back is questionable. Instead we’re looking at Everton’s Phil Jagielka (Premier Punt 8.3m, PlayON 8.6m) as a key buy, with the likely prospect of an opening day clean sheet at home to newly-promoted Watford. The central defender should benefit more than Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman from the defensive points for clearances (25 points), tackling (50 points) and interceptions (100 points) available in PlayON and is more budget-friendly in both games than the Toffees full-backs.

It’s difficult to overlook Eden Hazard as the big-hitter for our teams. At 14.7m in PlayON and 16m in Premier Punt, the midfielder takes a large chunk of our funds but with Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero doubts, we feel we can take risks elsewhere in the squads.

Theo Walcott is classed as a forward in both games and we’re backing him to be the key weapon against a potentially leggy West Ham rearguard. The 11.9m price-tag in PlayON appears to offer value, given that Walcott – who started ahead of Olivier Giroud up top last weekend – earned 4545 points from a hat-trick in Arsenal’s final match of the previous campaign. At 13.5m in Premier Punt, the Gunners man still looks a good option compared to Wayne Rooney at 15.8m.

Poundstretchers

If Kasper Schmeichel (6.6m PlayON and 6.8m in Premier Punt) and Leicester’s defence can carry on the late-season form that secured their Premier League survival, the Foxes shot stopper appears to be a sound pick as new manager Cladio Ranieri welcomes Sunderland to the King Power Stadium.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace’s Julian Speroni has been ruled out until late August, giving us the chance to field back-up keeper Wayne Hennessy in our weekly squad this week – the Wales international can be included at 6.4m in Premier Punt and an even cheaper 6m in PlayON for the trip to Norwich.

Matt Targett perfectly encapsulates the concept of the budget “enabler” in weekly games. The Southampton left-back could be set to deputise for the sidelined Ryan Bertrand in the short-term and, at 6.1m in PlayON and 6m in Premier Punt, the youngster allows funds to be spent elsewhere in the squad, whilst still offering a decent chance of points as the Saints visit St James’ Park.

In midfield we’ll be looking to include another Leicester asset. Riyad Mahrez has impressed over the summer and looks set to be handed a support role behind the front two – he will set you back 8.5m in Premier Punt and 7.8m in PlayON as the Foxes prepare for Sunderland’s visit.

From the top teams, the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jordan Ibe will be considered for squads needing a differential – both will be pushing for starts on the opening weekend after some decent pre-season displays.

Callum Wilson (PlayON 7.5m, Premier Punt 8.3m) stands out in the budget forward category this week as newly-promoted Bournemouth host Aston Villa. Wilson racked up 20 goals and seven assists in 45 league appearances for the Cherries, whilst Villa kept only three clean sheets in 13 league matches under Tim Sherwood last term, making the striker a potentially explosive option.

These are the players I’m considering ahead of the weekend’s first set of weekly contests. On Friday I’ll be back with a further look at both this week’s partner games – Premier Punt and PlayON – as I begin my quest for profit over the 2015/16 campaign.

    I'm struggling to decide between these 2 squads. A or B? And any improvements to either.
    A.
    Schmeichel
    Azpi, Bellerin, Clyne
    Hazard, Cazorla, Chadli, Mahrez
    Aguero, Benteke, Wilson

    Butland, Ki, Morgan, Francis

    B.
    Schmichael
    Azpi, Koscielny, Morgan
    Hazard, Cazorla, Mane, Chadli
    Aguero, Sakho, Wilson

    Butland, Sinclair, Williams, Francis.

    Team A gives me a couple of benching problems in week 1.

    RMT please:

    Ruddy - Butland
    Azpilicueta - Mertesacker - Cedric - Huth - S. Taylor
    Hazard - Sterling - Ozil - Mane - Fletcher
    Rooney - Benteke - Wilson

    my only concern is Saylor, should I DG Merte to 5.0 or Cedric to 4.5 or keep as is?

    Are you a kneejerker?
    Answer the following 3 Scenarios truthfully:
    Scenario 1:
    You've bought Mane in for his brilliant run of fixtures. 2 GWs later he has all the stats but has not provided any points leading to his price headed for a fall before the week ends. At the same time one of the MANY options @8.5 and above have performed and look like great options all of a sudden and carry the benefit of price rises.
    Do you
    A) Keep Mane for the good run of fixtures and expect a nice healthy ppg over that run and accept that other mids will do well in the game and you got to live with it
    B) Take a 4 point hit and free up 0.5 to swap him out before you can afford the player in question(Depay/Mata/Cazorla etc)

    Scenario 2:
    Hazard.. You know his pedigree and you know he WILL get you 6 ppg over the season(while Mane may drop off since he only has one season under his belt.. you never know). However, he has started off slow and the temptation to swap him for a cheaper mid who's in the points(dare i say Fabregas) or swap him to free up cash for Sanchez/Aguero is Very High
    Do you
    A) Not even consider taking Hazard out since he is.. Hazard
    B) Swap him out and not look back

    Scenario 3:
    You've gone for one of Ozil/Cazorla/Ramsey/Walcott (or even 2 of em) .. Over the first 2 weeks the ones you dont own perform well while you do own get 2 pointers.
    A) Keep the faith and avoid a kneejerk carousel
    B) Swap before price falls/rises and since your rival has the performing player

          Debuchy. As an Arsenal fan I can see a lot of rotation there, not worth the risk at this stage. Same with Gibbs and Monreal. Experience may play in bigger games and less so in others....maybe, just my hunch.

    targett? worth a start? may get a price rise if he starts first 2. i think for an early WC'er he's ideal. even if not on WC, still might be worth a go, if you pick a safe team. will be tough to shift is only issue if low on cash.

    any latest on bertrand progress does anybody know?

      I don't think he'll go up in value at all. Everyone will know that they will be wasting a transfer on a 5th defender that will have like 1/2 games left in him before Bertrand comes back in. So nobody will...

      Fabianski - Hennessey

      Clyne - Cedric - Mertesacker - Francis - 4.0

      Hazard - Sterling - Ozil - Ritchie - Wanayama

      Rooney - Pelle - Wilson

      3.0 itb - Pelle > Benteke and then Rooney > Aguero.

        Yeah preseason form has been intriguing this year, but it's always in the back of my mind that preseason form could be completely wrong.

        I remember Man Utd slaying everyone in preseason last season and playing like crap. Also all those strikers that had great preseasons like Franco Di Santo and flopped... there's definitely bigger names, probably at least one that played for Wigan, but I can't think of them right now.

        Lukaku -> Wilson
        Lionel -> Sterling
        Cedric -> Sunderland 4.5m

            I'd argue his team is more template before the transfers.

          And then you can have my team 😀 (apart from GKs and a couple of 4.5 Def tweaks)

            Depends how good you think Sterling is compared to Lukaku.

          Are you confident going into Monday nights game with no city coverage Evs?

          I think sterling is a great pick personally.

          I would downgrade lukaku to get him in.

            Err, not sure.

            Been trying to bend him in all night.

            It just kills my forward line. I'm not sure who I want to give in on?!

        Walcott -> Rambo
        Lukakaaa -> Sahkho [save yourself the heartache...]
        Ritchie -> Sterling.....

      Has anyone seen Coleman or Baines' names mentioned round these here parts since the game re-opened?? The fashionable response tends to be "fixs not great" but both of them are capable of scoring double figures against anyone, let alone Watford in GW1!

      I've got a current back 3 of Ivan/Coleman/Cedric, 3x good right backs with huge upside based on their attacking tendencies, backed up by 2x 4.0s on the bench that will never play & it only works out at 26.0m which isn't cheap, but by no means unaffordable either.

      Would love a sneaky goal/CS/3 baps 15 pointer from coleman in GW1 to put cat amongst the pigeons!

        Everton have the worst opening fixtures ever in FPL. I'd rather not pay £6m for one of their defenders even if he does have reasonable attacking threat.

      have 9.5 ITB & no GK, what would you do?

      a) Butland & Ruddy
      b) Cech & 4m
      c) Myhill & Ruddy
      d) Myhill & Butland

      Thanks!

      Butland
      Huth, Koscielny, Azpilicueta, Coleman
      Sinclair, Hazard, Walcott
      Aguero, Mitrovic, Rooney

      Bench Schwarzer, Ibe, Wanyama, Baker

      Weak bench but I like Ibe and aim to rotate with Sinclair/Wanyama, do I need another .5 to upgrade Baker? Pants Becnch I know but fitted in Aguero, Rooney and Hazard. Mitrovic is my punt

        That bench is far too weak. U will have to play that same 11 every week.

        actually a tough call. i'm back on benteleb myself. afraid wanyama losing value if he misses a game or 2. not a lot on great options. maybe anya at watford but don't now much about him. see if you can squeeze a 5mil player in and look to rotate someone either. there's much better 5mil options
