Yaya Toure scores twice as City sweep aside West Brom at the Hawthorns. David Silva chips in with an assist, whilst Sergio Aguero steps up his match fitness with a second-half cameo off the bench.

Toure brace propels Blues to summit

Yaya Toure reaffirmed his heavy-hitting potential with a first-half brace against an overwhelmed Baggies outfit. Granted, the Ivorian’s first goal was very fortuitous – despite David Silva getting a touch, the Fantasy Premier League attributed the goal to the Ivorian and the assist to Jesus Navas. There were no such doubts over his second, though, as he curled a sublime effort into the top corner. Although Toure had to be substituted after 80 minutes with a slight groin strain, manager Manuel Pellegrini later revealed that he expects him to be fit to face Chelsea next Gameweek.

With most Fantasy managers turning their sights towards Raheem Sterling (22% ownership) or David Silva (10%) for their Sky Blues coverage, Toure (6%) proved to be a high-impact differential. Nonetheless, Silva showcased more than enough to suggest that his 10.0 price tag is worth the outlay, orchestrating the midfield with effortless poise and bagging an assist in the process. Sterling, meanwhile, fluffed a gilt-edged one-on-one chance, yet his pace in behind carries the promise of attacking returns.

Sergio Aguero was handed a 28-minute cameo as he gears up for a potential start against Chelsea on Sunday. Given the typically tight nature of that match-up (four goals in two head-to-heads last term), non-owners might be tempted hold off on recruiting the Argentinian marksman until Gameweek 3 (eve) or even Gameweek 4 (WAT), before City embark on a fantastic run of fixtures up to Gameweek nine (cry, WHY, tot, NEW, BOU).

Vincent Kompany (6.0) cemented the three points with a commanding header just before the hour mark. While City’s quartet of home ties after the Chelsea fixture look conducive to clean sheets, Aleksandar Kolarov (5.5) arguably presents a stronger case for inclusion in Gael Clichy’s absence, given that the Serbian full-back took precedence over Toure at free-kicks and ranked top for goal attempts (three) among defenders in Gameweek 1.

Baggies slump in home opener

Tony Pulis’ troops were comprehensively outclassed at the Hawthorns, falling to their second consecutive 3-0 defeat at the hands of City. Saido Berahino – who lined up alongside Rickie Lambert in a 4-4-2 set-up – had his moments and was denied a goal by virtue of the offside flag. It remains to be seen how club-record signing Salomon Rondon will slot into the forward line, particularly with question marks surrounding Berahino’s future.

James McClean was favoured in the left-wing role by Tony Pulis, meaning Chris Brunt was deployed in the left-back berth – starving us of a Baggies defensive option. With a home clash against Chelsea just around the corner, many non-owners of the Baggies backline will be persuaded to steer clear until the schedule takes a turn for the better from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Stupidly played my wildcard, now left trying to make the best of it.

    Butland / Rudd
    Oxford / Francis / Prodl / Targett / Yoshida
    Payet / Sanchez / Yaya / Coutninho / Obertan
    Aguero / Rooney / Gomis

Thoughts? Too Punty? Too Bandwagony? Weak defence an issue? Too confused now.

Obertan is at a risk to being dropped, whilst he played well, there's still Aarons, De Jong and potentially Perez waiting to step in.

Only stupid because I didn't think about it. Took 2 hits, and then thought I may as well go full Wildcard.

In a pickle with Rooney, I want to swap him out but I've just got the feeling he's going to turn up against Villa.

I think it's his pace for away fixtures that will sway people. I think Giroud will start too. He's the only real striker they have until they buy. Just don't see him being benched anytime soon.

Agree with this. Don't think Hazard has a hattrick in him,but Sanchez does. And Hazard isn't playing in a team who score a lot of goals but Sanchez is. Though Hazard is a bps magnet and has penalties.

So the OX is in red hot form and looks the have made the RW role his own.. are we overthinking it by not getting him? The fact he can keep Walcott out of the team just shows Wenger has faith in him. And he's been the most form looking mid at Arsenal the past 2 weekends
Could be another case of FFS overlook due to overthinking like we did with Ramsey 2 years ago

    1. Demí
      • 15 Years
      10 years, 6 months ago

I'm not sure we are. I don't see him in the 1st choice xi when all fit. 6 goals in 4 seasons. He still needs to improve on his decision making and end product for me. Don't see the appeal, as i think Walcott will get more starts than him this season overall.

He was at fault for West Ham's 2nd too

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 16 Years
        10 years, 6 months ago

For a player his age every year could be a huge improvement.. it's the 6 goals in 4 seasons kind of stat(playing in different positions and not being regular) that will blind us to him. Not even checked his stats for the past 2 games but i've watched them and he has been the only one who stood out tbh

        1. Demí
          • 15 Years
          10 years, 6 months ago

Yes, but i still think he's got a lot to improve on in footballing terms. Just seems to be mostly pace and power right now. I think Wenger felt he had to start him after his community shield performance. And they lost, so i can see him changing it up.

With Alexis nailed on, he's competing with the likes of Ramsey and Walcott. Ramsey is more nailed than Ox and Walcott scores more goals. I just don't see it being his year yet, maybe next season.

I'm still holding on to him although he looked out of place. he had a couple of decent runs towards the defenders and even a 1 on 1 with Myhill but missed with a weak shot to the keepers stretching arms. Kun, Silva, Yaya, Kolarov are still the usual suspects for FPL from City.

Similarly to City's "season after winning the league syndrome", Mourinho seems to have a bit of 3rd season syndrome. I don't think they'll win it this year, my money's on City.

Well. Last time a Mourinho Chelsea were defending a PL title they kept clean sheets in their first 6 games the following season. Many comparisons to history are possible but which (if any) is the right one?

Having said that, as a Chelsea regular I do sense that something is not quite right this season. In just the same way that I felt it was "on" last season from the very first pre-season game. I don't know what is amiss - whether it's the short pre-season, the lack of new signings, the Costa saga, a come-down after winning the PL... But I do feel that something is.

Keep IMHO, Liverpool fixtures not getting better and Leicesters are. Plus Gomez not nailed.

Gomez played really well but some say Liverpool is looking for another defender from PSG (don't remember his name) who might change the defense. I would just wait 2-3 more game weeks before deciding on him.

Why isn't there more love for Lens around here?

Got an assist in GW1 and have great fixtures to come.

Yaya got the headlines but Silva was unbelievable last night (should had a goal as well), at that price though, Yaya could be bargain of the season

Cheers bud. This walcott dilemma is really frustrating as well though! But i'll give him another week to see what happens.

Seriously everyone with a sweet sweet team before GW1 started, still has a sweet sweet team now. Stop bloody panicking! Try and forget about your WC if you can and save a transfer. It's to early to tell who is about to hit form and who was a flash in the pan.

Just breathe in, aaaand out and repeat until you have decided to give it another week at least!

Just wanted to throw a couple of questions out there:

    1. Do we think Gomez will nail down that lb position? He arguably looked better than Moreno.

    2. Oxford - how likely is it that he will keep his position at cdm? Aren't the hammers looking to sign song?

    3. My backline is:
    Cedric, Huth, Francis, Coates, Kos

    I've got 0.5 ITB

Relatively happy with the rest of my team

    Mane, Ozil, Hazard, Chadli, Mahrez
    Rooney, Sakho, Benteke

    Should I therefore, upgrade
    A) Coates - 5.0 Def - probably Jenkinson or Williams
    OR
    B) Cedric - 5.5 - probably Darmian / Shaw

With regards point 2. He's 16, he wont be able to play week in week out, regardless of form. I'd not expect much more than bench fodder from him.

I could also do Mane ---> Yaya but feel like a week isn't long enough to really judge

      1. Not sure, I wouldnt buy him until the transfer window is closed.

      2. Not very likely. He's only 16

      3. Leave your defence its good

I posted about Oxford during the game on Sunday and a Hammers fan said he might be playing because of the injury to Obiang but even he wasn't sure if that was the case. Either way I cannot see him playing week in and week out. Although at 4.0 you might take that
