Our final look back at a hugely underwhelming Gameweek 1 brings Leicester’s two-goal midfielder, West Ham’s perfect combination of form and fixtures and Arsenal’s dire opening display onto the lunchtime menu.

The Player

With just four goals to his name in 2014/15, Riyad Mahrez wasn’t a player that immediately leapt into Fantasy managers’ pre-season plans. Despite a kind price of 5.5 and a couple of goals over the summer, the arrival of Claudio Ranieri proved enough of a deterrent, with the Italian’s tendency to tinker persuading many to ignore Leicester’s attackers for fear of rest and rotation.

Two goals and a maximum bonus haul against Sunderland has changed all that. Granted, Ranieri was true to form, unexpectedly changing his tactics from 3-4-1-2 to 4-4-2 and shifting Mahrez from the role in “the hole” onto the right flank, yet the Algerian thrived against a beleaguered Black Cats and took full advantage of Patrick van Aanholt’s defensive frailties down the visitors’ left.

Ranieri’s decision to shift Leonardo Ulloa to the bench has seen Mahrez climb up the penalty pecking order, as evidenced by his converted spot-kick on Saturday afternoon. Despite the fact that team-mate Marc Albrighton equalled his 15-point return, the Algerian’s goal threat (he fired six attempts to Albrighton’s two) makes him the most sought-after midfielder this week.

Crucially, his budget price tag allows us to free up considerable cash to target the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero after both emerged from the bench in the first round of fixtures. With clashes against West Ham, Bournemouth and Villa in the next four, though, Mahrez has the fixtures and form to prove more than just an enabler for our 15-man squads.

The Team

Having seen his new side tumble out of Europe prior to the start of the season, Slaven Bilic was already up against it as West Ham made their way to the Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

A 2-0 win against the Gunners answered any doubters as the Hammers turned in a performance at both ends of the pitch that is bound to see interest in their main assets pick up. One look at the fixtures shows why – up next are four superb home encounters in the next six (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR), which more than atone for tricky trips to Liverpool and City over the same period.

With Dimitri Payet pulling the strings behind Diafra Sakho and Mauro Zarate, Bilic’s side look perfectly placed to kick on from their weekend win. Payet is already up and running with an assist for Cheikhou Kouyate’s opener against the Gunners and, at 7.5, could prove a steal if he continues in the same vein.

At the back, meanwhile, the Hammers will be buoyed by the weekend scoreline, bearing in mind they managed just two clean sheets away from home in 2014/15. The only real downside from a Fantasy perspective is that there is still some uncertainty over Bilic’s back-four. With Carl Jenkinson now available this weekend, it remains to be seen whether he will come straight into the XI, and, if so, who Bilic will select as his two first-choice centre-halves.

Young Reece Oxford also deserves a mention. One of only two 4.0-priced defenders to start Gameweek 1, the 16-year-old benefitted from the absence of Pedro Obiang to start in central midfield at the Emirates. Again, though, there are question marks over whether Bilic will retain him in his starting line-up once the Hammers have a fully-fit squad, though his 43,000+ new FPL owners are clearly undeterred.

The Talking Point

Heading into Gameweek 1, the Arsenal midfield posed one of the biggest dilemmas for Fantasy managers.

Devoid of Alexis Sanchez over the summer, Arsene Wenger’s side still looked in fine form and finished their pre-season with a convincing Community Shield win over Chelsea which left Mesut Ozil, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and even Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all tussling for our attentions.

Fast forward a week and there’s a very different slant on things. Wenger’s decision to drop Walcott to the bench and select Olivier Giroud up top is surely a sign of what’s to come, with the Gunners boss adopting a “horses for courses” approach for the lone striker role which may well kill off both as Fantasy assets.

Whilst Ozil, Cazorla and Ramsey looked lethargic and failed to convince against the Hammers, Sanchez’ explosive cameo off the bench highlighted just why he’s the most expensive Fantasy option at the Emirates. In just 29 minutes, the Chilean produced 11 touches in the box and three attempts inside the penalty area as Arsenal desperately tried to claw their way back into the match. Away to Palace next weekend, he’ll surely start as Wenger’s side look to bounce back from their opening day disaster.

Yes, he may set you back 11.0 in FPL but you get what you pay for with the Chilean. On the evidence of Sunday’s showing, it won’t be long before his 6% ownership is on the up.

Hello everyone! So after a pretty poor opening week I'm trying to save my FT. What do you think?

    Panti
    Coates, Shaw, Jenkinson
    Hazard, Sterling, Ozil, Lens
    Rooney(c), Pelle, Benteke

    Hennessy, Wanymaya, Morgan, Mings

My transfer plan is to save this week.

Next GW Ozil and Benteke to Payet/Chadli and Gomis maybe?

    Gw4 Rooney to Aguero

In your opinion should I give Ayew the armband or Alexis Sanchez? Sanchez impressed when he came on looking at his touches in the box however Ayew has one of the worst defensive premier league teams at home and is on top form?

Or should I downgrade Sakho to a striker I won't play and try to fit in Hazard and Sanchez?

He's only a bad game away from losing his spot. Chambers wasn't.

Moreno is not doubt a defensive liability and Gomez is only young so he'll surely be prone to some form of rotation

At 4.5 it's tempting to get rid of Martin and bring in Gomez, highest NTI today and hopefully starts to build TV. Should get CS points and if he gets dropped then I still have a backline of Francis, Kos, Ivanovic

Gives my outfield players another week in my team...I'm looking at you Walcott

It's tricky at this point to advise a hit to a team without Aguero. Walcott will probably return to the starting XI next week and he was probing into some dangerous areas when he did finally get on the pitch. I'm personally tempted to leave my Bournemouth player (Ritchie) in the team, ride out an average gw and assess other emerging options gw3

The Friday deadline is going to catch out a lot of casuals used to doing their transfers on Saturday morning. There may be a bumper week for price changes in GW3 as a result.

Not many people seemed to consider Yaya Toure as an option this season. After what many considered a disappointing 2014/15 after his heroics the year before he was ignored as the Man City midfielder of choice at the expense of Sterling or Silva. I, however, had him in my team and he rescued an absolutely horrific GW1 for me. Here’s my reasoning (without in-depth stats!) as to why I picked him:

I wanted Aguero from GW3/4 onwards but City’s fixtures are so good from that point on that ideally I wanted two City players by GW4 at the latest. That meant starting with one for their tricky opening two games because I was already committed to using a couple of transfers to shoehorn Aguero in. I’m sure a lot of people had similar plans. It came down to Silva (10.0), Sterling (9.0) or Toure (8.5). It must be said at this point that, if prices were equal, Silva would be my pick every single time. I picked Toure based on what I thought he would deliver over a long-term period, as City’s fixtures are pretty good until post-Christmas.

Toure has always chipped in with assists, never getting fewer than 6 until last season so I think I can rely on him getting several to keep things ticking over. It’s goals that seemed more volatile until I considered the following:

2013/14 he scored 20 including an unsustainable free-kick conversion rate and several penalties when Aguero was off the field. You would expect this total to be a good 5 or so over what you would expect from Toure.

2014/15 he went to the World Cup and so started the season tired. Not only tired but emotionally drained as his brother died over the summer. Combine this with his being unsettled at City (remember cake gate?) and it’s not surprising he didn’t explode like the previous year. Oh, and he went to ACON as well and only actually played 27 PL games. Yet he still scored 10 goals.

Given this I would expect his natural level of goal output to be somewhere between 10 and 20 goals. I’d expect minimum 12 from him this season and maybe up towards 17, along with his more usual rate of assists. Is that a good return from an 8.5 midfielder? Yes.

Think I'll get him around GW4 for the excellent fixtures. Already have Aguero and Hazard, and will probably have Sanchez by then, so doubt I'll be able to get Silva too. Should get some good hauls over that period.

Okay, let me answer that more fully. I didn't really want support for it because I was happy to make my own decision and I'm fairly careful with advice given to others as I don't want to be picking their teams for them. However, it would have sparked a really interesting discussion and I'm sorry I never got round to starting it.

I think most of us will have 2 City - Kun + a mid after GW3. Some may also go Kolarov too if he nails the spot.

I think it will be hard to know who out of Sterling or Silva does most damage - possibly a coin flip. However I suspect there will be the inevitable injury to one of this lot and if its Kun then pens come onto Yayas radar and dead balls if Silva - plus he will likely play further up. However we also have KDB to fit into the mix and Fermandinho has no obvious partner other than him.

I personally will see a City long term injury as a Yaya option but not before.

Well, I think you're right about him being the main partner for Fernandinho. De Bruyne won't change that. The thing is with Toure is that defensive midfield is technically his starting position but he doesn't really do much defending. I'd say he fulfils a similar role to Lampard - linking the play and bursting forward to join the attack. Lampard's starting position was more advanced but it's basically the same idea. To use a long jump analogy, Toure simply has a longer run-up but they both end up jumping off the same board.

The final transfer I made was Yaya > Depay. Disaster so far but I got excited about the season and as a United fan I always end up with two of them.

I picked several mids based on Doos's tables from end of season - Yaya was there, and he will be again this year.

His price drop is unprecedented and he will be great value.

I think Sterling, Silva, Kun & Possibly De Bruyne in the team can only be good for Yaya. Most of his goals come when he can burst forward into a bit of space, those 4 in front of him will surely pull defenders away, affording him more space. I agree that his 241 point season was possibly a freak occurrence, but I wouldn't be surprised by a 170+. Which would be a great return for an 8.5.

I think when people are selecting the likes of Mane for 8, Yaya @ 8.5-8.8 will be excellent value come GW 3/4. I'll be looking to have Yaya/Kun and the cheapest City defensive option that looks nailed (or close to) from then onwards. A little disappointed he started well, as that'll inflate his price. I think last season proved he wasn't just a "casuals" choice.

      Hi Barneybuss,

I reckon you can find more value than Azpi, Mert and Darmian for your defence (see latest watchlist article). Then you can afford to upgrade westwood and/or grabban.
I'd probably look to upgrade grabban to sakho if possible - you can always downgrade from there if necessary, it is a lot harder to upgrade from a cheap forward.
Layun is likely to lose his place (according to FFS anyway) but not a bad short-term shout.

Nope, not really. In competition with debuchy for starts.
Given the upcoming fixtures I'd say a saints defender is a must (Cedric, or targett if you want to save cash).
After that I think Swansea offer good value (Williams), Richards at villa for 4.5m is decent too. Hard to make a call after one GW!
Skrtel at Liverpool might be a good bet as a premium defender given their fixtures versus Ars, Che and Man U?

Well from what I heard Southampton look far from convincing at the back, Tbh I've brought in a pool defender expecting a cs against Bournemouth, it's a tough one just go with ur gut!

Pellegrini has stated that Yaya Touré was substituted because of a slight discomfort in his groin but will be okay for the Chelsea game.

Is Ritchie still considered a decent pick or should I get rid of him from my team?
