Following the £10 million capture of Brown Ideye last summer, West Bromwich Albion broke their club record transfer fee for the second year running with the arrival of Zenit St Petersburg forward Salomon Rondon in a £12 million deal. The Venezuelan striker – who was ineligible to face Man City on Monday – expressed an eagerness to get out on the pitch and showcase his talents:

“I am very happy to be here. This is a new opportunity in my career. I can’t wait to be with the other players and to play. The club showed a lot of interest in me, that’s what is important for a player, what you take into account, and there are expectations of me.”

The History

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Rondon started out a couple of local amateur clubs, before teaming up with Venezuelan first division side Aragua in 2005. He made his debut at the age of 17 during the 2006/07 season and went on to notch seven goals in 21 outings. Following another successful campaign that harvested eight goals in 28 appearances, Rondon was recruited by Segunda Division outfit Las Palmas in the summer of 2008.

The forward failed to net in ten appearances during his debut term with the Yellows but found his groove in the 2009/10 season, tallying 10 goals in 36 outings. He subsequently moved up a tier and signed for La Liga club Malaga, where he would set a new record for goals scored (14) by a Venezuelan in the top flight of Spanish football. Rondon also ended his second term with the Anchovies as the club’s top scorer (ten) while notching four assists, resulting in a transfer to Rubin Kazan in August 2012.

Rondon played 25 out of a possible 30 league ties in the 2012/13 Russian Premier League campaign, chalking up seven goals and one assist. He started the first nine matches the following season – recording five goals and one assist – before a metatarsal fracture ruled him out for two months.

He then made the switch to Zenit on his return from the treatment room, registering eight goals and three assists across 12 outings. The previous campaign proved to his most profitable yet, with 13 goals and three assists arriving in just 26 appearances (1515 minutes).

After making his international debut in a friendly against Haiti back in 2008, Rondon has since racked up 13 goals in 38 appearances for the Venezuela senior team. The 25-year-old frontman started all of the Plainsmen’s group matches in this summer’s Copa America, netting against Colombia in their tournament opener.

The Prospects

Rondon’s arrival places further question marks over Sadio Berahino’s future at the club, with the youngster continuing to be linked with a move to Tottenham. With Rickie Lambert also in the mix, it remains to be seen what Pulis’ plans are for the season ahead, though the Baggies boss is expected to mainly favour a two-man frontline once again. Certainly, Pulis has been quick to admit both Victor Anichebe and Ideye may be on their way out as he reshuffles his striker options.

After Monday’s home defeat against City, though, Pulis did concede he’d made a mistake starting with two up top and it’s likely that, when up against more dominant sides, the Baggies boss will revert to a lone striker system in an attempt to stifle the opposition.

Although Berahino and Lambert are proven goalscorers that each bring something unique to the striker table, neither possess the balance of physicality and pace that renders Rondon such a strong fit for the centre forward role. Measuring in at six foot three inches tall and boasting a muscular frame, Rondon is the obvious selection to spearhead West Brom’s attack when they’re forced to sit deep, which would see Berahino shifted to the flank on occasion.

Combing through the underlying statistics, Rondon’s goal frequency last term (one every 116 minutes) underlines his finishing prowess – only Sergio Aguero (101.6), Diego Costa (106.7) and Papiss Cisse (112.5) bettered him in that regard. Furthermore, Rondon’s shot conversion rate (25.4%) would’ve ranked second only to Costa (26.3%) – far surpassing the efforts of Berahino (16.3%) and Lambert (10.5%).

Coming in at a relatively lofty 7.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Rondon’s arrival may ultimately dent Lambert’s Fantasy prospects – the latter was expected to be handed spot-kick duties ahead of Berahino but may not be as nailed-on as we had hoped. With doubts over Rondon’s fitness ahead of the weekend trip to Watford, though, and a clash with Chelsea in Gameweek 3, many will be happy to steer clear for now and look for signs of consistency in Pulis’ selection. Having scored just 19 goals in as many league matches since the Welshman took the helm, it’s debatable whether the Baggies frontline will afford us a viable option, with most of our interest focused on Pulis’ defensive options instead.

I think the amount you have invested at the back has left you a little light in midfield.

Not necessarily this week but some moves I would consider, as you may need more cash in the bank to upgrade elsewhere are:

Jagielka > Everton LB who starts instead of Baines (+£1m)
      Jagielka > Oxford (+£1.5m)
      Ivanovic > Azpi (+£1m)
      Ivanovic > Mertesaker (+£1.5m)

I'd also reduce the amount invested in your 5th mid to enhance your 4th mid.

Things I was most pleased about by my GW1 team?

All my players started, nobody got injured.

Not having to make a transfer this week to combat either of those and keeping it in the bag means I can really plan my next move.

Why is Hazard-> Payet considered a knee jerk?

    1) Chelsea Play mci, West Hame LEI
    2) Hazard hasn't looked good in the community shield or the 'easy' match on WBA
    3) Chelsea don't look great as a team, West ham do.
    4) Payet impressed with his calmness in and around the box, football intelligence and set pieces
    5) Most will need to free up funds for Aguero and Hazard out seems the obvious route. So either I do this move this week or next.

I guess people want to see a sample of more than 1 game for Payet and West Ham. They played the perfect match at Arsenal, need to see if they can repeat it and change tact against lesser opposition. Hazard meanwhile, is proven and can come good any time

Its why I didn't pick him. Why have him for 3GW's when two of those are difficult fixtures. Some might keep of course but then you'd have 1/4 of the funds tied up in Aguero and Hazard (assuming most want Aguero).

Yeah he will be gone to fund Aguero, was a mistake on my part, going against the gut. Other reason was I didn't really fancy the 8.5-9m mids. Should have upgraded Wilson initially instead.

Plenty of hindsight, will fix on wildcard.....unless Hazard scores a hat trick against City 🙂

It's pretty clear why it's considered a knee jerk, whether it's a good move or not is what's important.

I'd wait another week. Ayew for around the same price is also an option and he appears to have better fixtures.

I as many have similar thoughts but:

For the sake of an early change is it worth actually using an FT this week.

My mids are Ozil Haz Milner Chadli and Mane.

To me a TFR is worth 4 pts and I can't see the odds of taking Payet over any of these worthwhile. Maybe Milner but I don't have the extra half mil.

Payet has better odds with the bookies to score and assist than Hazard...

Amongst a cacophony of outrage, I'll voice my support for you - this looks to be the move which I'm most likely to make this week, for all the above reasons.

The main reason I wanted Hazard was to cover the high percentage of GW1 (C)'ers. And for all the reasons you listed above, I don't think it's a knee jerk at all.

Sounds to me, having read all your responses, that you confused the general question that you asked with your personal situation.

You appear to have had a plan. But you asked a bout the general transfer of Haz to Payet, which is mostly the result of jerky knees

1.) That has been the case since before the weekend. If you seriously had already planned a Hazard > Payet for GW2 I would be surprised.
2.) I would agree with that, but wouldn't take it as a certain indicator that he won't play well over the next set of games.
3.) Didn't basically the same Chelsea squad walk the league last year?
4.) Not arguing that Payet isn't a decent player, but better than Hazard?
5.) Depends on the team you have, personally I wouldn't have planned to transfer out a key player after GW1 and would have an alternative plan in place.

Oh but I didn't start with Hazard in any case. Had a feeling impatient people would get rid of him early doors. I'll wait til his price bottoms then cash in.

Will probably be my move if I do anything this week. Frees up a bucket load of cash for almost any move and I already have Aguero. Yes Hazard is amazing but the next two fixtures. Do I really want to have 11.5 mil riding on that?

Lost at the bottom and need some advice:

    Should I do Azpil + Ox> Payet+ Darmian (-4)

    Or save the FT?

I already own Walcott who is obviously a risk, but feel I should hold onto him.

Say there's 2 DGW's, the one with lots of teams, can be used for bench boost, and you save your 2nd wildcard for the gw before it.

Triple captain for the other dgw with the man city/chelsea/arsenal attacker that has 2 plum fixtures

                just an example

Based purely on the opening week, Ayew (Swans) looks a great pick for that price.

    2) Williams (NEW)
    3) Cedric (EVE)
    4) Gomez (BOU)
    5) Oxford (LEI)

The top 3 for me. Cedric has much more attacking potential than Gomez.

Carzola & Sanchez is more balanced and they will get more game time. They're also 0.5m cheaper

Having Walcot with a fully fit squad is madness. Look at each player on their own merit. Coverage is a myth.

Isn't Payet a better captaincy option than Sakho?

    1) He really displayed his ability against Arsenal
    2) Potential clean sheet point and extra point for the goal and high chance of assists
    3) Plays in the hole

    1. Fifa las vegas

IMO, he definitely is. I just hope he stays quiet this week so I can get him next week when I know more.

Not in my opinion man, as I said before. Payet strikes me as a player who will get a lot of assists, but it's likely to be Sakho who's getting the goals from those assists.

Might be worth checking the tables to suss out Payet's goal threat.

Pretty average week for me, hoping for better this gameweek. Should i make any transfers from my team?

    Butland - Hennessey
    Azpi - Huth - Cedric - Targett - S. Taylor
    Hazard - Sterling - Walcott - Depay - Sinclair
    Rooney - Pelle - Sakho

    Thoughts?

You're budget tight ok, then I would leave defence this week, just bench Soton (imo) as I didn't notice you had Taylor which is a better bet I think.

I would replace Depay with Montero long term this week.
