After rolling out the first instalment of this week’s Watchlist articles with a look at the goalkeepers and defenders yesterday, this afternoon we switch attention to our recommended midfielders for the next four to six Gameweeks. Our backing of Southampton assets continues with Sadio Mane moving to the top of our rankings, while Alexis Sanchez replaces Theo Walcott as our preferred Arsenal midfield option after Sunday’s surprising turn of events at the Emirates.

Despite failing to register attacking returns in Southampton’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle, our faith in Sadio Mane is undiminished. Available at 8.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Mane – who fired three goal attempts at St James’ Park last Sunday – should be able to deliver with Saints’ upcoming fixtures (EVE, wat, NOR, wba, MUN, SWA) pretty favourable, particularly over the next three weeks.

West Ham’s Dimitri Payet capped an impressive Premier League debut with an assist for Cheikhou Kouyate’s goal, and with four strong home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the next six, the Hammers’ big summer signing looks primed for further attacking returns. With the majority of set-piece duties in his locker, the 7.5-priced France international looks to have significant assist potential, although he did only create two chances against the Gunners.

After a fairly quiet display against Swansea, and with some tough fixtures (mci, wba, CPL, eve, ARS) coming up, Eden Hazard may struggle to justify his 11.5 price tag in FPL over the coming weeks. The Belgian international has started previous Premier League seasons slowly, and with Jose Mourinho expected to travel to the Etihad with a defensive mindset, Hazard’s huge 55.8% ownership may start getting itchy feet if he fails to produce attacking points once again. Indeed, over 30,000 FPL bosses have already transferred out last season’s PFA Player of the Year.

David Silva was one of only a few big hitters to register attacking returns in the opening Gameweek, providing the assist for Vincent Kompany’s goal, while he was unfortunate not to be credited with some involvement in City’s opener. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have two more difficult fixtures (CHE, eve) before the schedule takes a significant turn for the better in Gameweek 4, with Silva looking a decent double-up option with Sergio Aguero from that point onwards.

After a 29-minute appearance off the bench against West Ham on Sunday, Alexis Sanchez could be thrust back into the starting XI for the trip to Selhurst Park this weekend. The Chilean staggeringly led all midfielders for penalty box touches in Gameweek 1 and also attempted three shots from inside the box. Although the former Barcelona man will set us back a hefty 11.0 in FPL, the fixtures (cpl, LIV, new, STO) look fairly kind for Arsene Wenger’s side. Expect a further Watchlist climb if he starts and shines against Palace.

Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez was one of the big stories from the opening Gameweek, scoring twice and bringing in a haul of 15 points. The Algeria international was part of our initial Watchlist rankings last week after an impressive pre-season, but few could have predicted such an explosive performance from the midfielder, who has already risen to 5.6 in FPL. With the fixture list (whm, TOT, bou, AVL, sto) still pretty favourable, this bandwagon looks well justified, with Mahrez looking one of the strongest options among the budget midfielders.

An impressive statistical performance – albeit with no attacking returns – in the 1-0 defeat to Man United has seen Christian Eriksen replace Nacer Chadli as our preferred Tottenham midfield option. Chadli’s price tag of 7.0 in FPL should still provide good value, but if your budget allows it, we think Eriksen is the one to own ahead of some appealing fixtures (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CPL, MCI) for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

While Raheem Sterling failed to deliver against West Brom on Monday night, the quality of City’s attacking performance as a team has us convinced the points will soon start flowing for the 9.0-priced midfielder. As previously mentioned with David Silva, the Citizens’ next two fixtures may prove prohibitive in terms of scoring goals, but in all likelihood, the temptation to carry at least two City attacking assets into the Gameweek 4 home encounter against Watford is something that will be on the minds of many Fantasy managers as we begin to plan for the next few matches. If you can’t double on Silva and Aguero, Sterling should be in your sights.

Although there is little to choose between Liverpool midfield trio Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Philippe Coutinho, we’re backing the later after he was handed the “number ten” role against Stoke on Sunday. The Brazilian schemer is more expensive at 8.0 in FPL, with the English duo coming in at 7.0, but if Henderson and Milner continue in the double-pivot, their chances of registering attacking points appear more limited ahead of four very strong Anfield encounters (BOU, WHM, NOR, AVL) in the next six Gameweeks.

Premier League newcomers Andre Ayew and Jeremain Lens delivered attacking returns on the opening weekend, and both have the fixtures to continue rewarding their owners. Ayew, available at 7.0 in FPL, scored in Swansea’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea, and also took all three bonus points, as he looks to replicate last year’s ten-goal haul for Marseille. The Swans’ upcoming schedule (NEW, sun, MUN, wat, EVE, sot) should give the Ghana attacker the perfect platform to build on an impressive debut.

It’s probably fair to say that Lens didn’t quite make the same impression as Ayew last weekend, mainly because of Sunderland’s terrible first half performance against Leicester. The Dutch international did manage to bag an assist last weekend and, coming in at 6.5 in FPL, could warrant some consideration with the schedule (NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou) pretty kind to Dick Advocaat’s men.

Bournemouth’s Matt Ritchie (6.0) served up a frustrating blank for his 5% ownership against Aston Villa on the opening day, and only managed to create one chance for his team-mates. With trips to Liverpool and West Ham up next for the Cherries, goals could be hard to come by in the short-term, although home matches against Leicester and Sunderland, sandwiching an away encounter at Norwich, mean we should perhaps be patient with our Bournemouth assets as Eddie Howe’s men come to terms with the rigours of the top flight.

Arsenal’s lacklustre performance against West Ham has seen Mesut Ozil slide towards the bottom of our ladder. The Germany international did create four chances and register two goal attempts in the 2-0 defeat, and should keep his place in the starting XI, although after such a flat display, Wenger could well ring the changes for the match against Crystal Palace. The former Real Madrid man, priced at 8.5 in FPL, will need to produce the goods soon, otherwise a mass exodus could be on the cards once City’s schedule turns from Gameweek 4 onwards.

One of the biggest disappointments from the opening weekend may well have been performance from Memphis Depay. The Dutch international struggled to make an impact against Spurs, and was substituted after 68 minutes. While the 8.5-rated midfielder’s starting spot doesn’t look in any doubt for now, like Ozil, he’ll have to convince his 24% ownership he’s worth retaining, with United’s fixtures after the matches against Aston Villa and Newcastle turning unfavourable (swa, LIV, sot).

What price do we think Van Dijk will come in at?

I'd hope he would be 5.0m, as with fellow new signing Cedric, but I have a feeling FPL will price him at 5.5m.

The odds on Rooney blanking in the first 2 games would be quite high, I'd have thought.

He's looking far from great, but it wouldn't surprise me if he scored against Villa.

Hazard's the other one I'm looking at, as Mourinho will have got right into them after the Swansea performance. Only takes a penalty for Hazard to register attacking returns.

    Schmeichel

    Hazard Özil Mané Milner
    Rooney Kane Wilson
    Hennessey Wanyama Francis Saylor
Feel like wildcard very soon could be it, maybe GW4 after we see how big guns like Aguero-Sanchez-Silva performs and which cheap defenders and attackers good value.
    Someone agree?
Or just chill and play wildcard when later trouble with yellow or red players. It's a marathon not a sprint.

Think it depends on whether you used FT this week. If you did (like me) it will be hard to get in the big hitters without a WC if they explode early.

Wilson had the most touches in the box of any player in GW1 (15). I'd keep him, since he is nailed on. Sell Walcott, who isn't.

      Walcott > Payet/Ayew IMO.

That should allow you to get Aguero in for Rooney in a week or so.

He played 3 days after he was arrested, and is currently on bail.

Leicester's owners don't take this sort of thing lightly. They sacked 3 players a few months ago for participating in a racist sex tape.

Doesn't help that he called a man a 'jap', whilst his new strike partner Okazaki is Japanese.

I can see Okazaki and Ulloa starting at the weekend.

Not really. They obviously decided on having other big hitters, and couldn't fit those two in. A lot of others will have those two though. Like i said above, i don't think there's a lack of options, but hard to decide between the less reliable options like mane, benteke and rooney with the main picks in hazard and aguero not options for most.

Doesn't mean people were wrong to not get one of Kane/Benteke so they had their gw2 captain sorted

With City going up against Chelsea I suppose the choice is more limited than usual. But it's not just that; people are being more punty than usual too, and it's quite refreshing to see. But I think there's a bit of kneejerkery involved, too; no way would people be considering Pelle over Rooney, for example, if their GW1 fortunes had been reversed.

MCI-CHE reduces the options. Also think form is influencing people's thinking. If any of the big players had a decent haul last week they'd be being suggested a lot (Roo, Ozil, Wally, benteke) as fixtures aren't too bad.

He doesn't fit the bill. Liverpool used to play with fast pace forwards like Sturridge and Suarez.
Benteke is the whole contrary. He stands in the box waiting for a good ball. If the wingers can't cross the ball well, he ain't gonna score a header

I was leaning to Aguero, but now am considering Sakho. If Sakho is punished for getting in twubble and making the team look bad (I doubt this, but it does happen, at least in the States), then fine, my VC will take over, which I am now thinking could be Pelle.

I am tempted to bring in Sanchez, and he'd then be my captain, and I'd make Sahko or Pelle my VC.

So earlier I said I might drop hazard to raise funds, with a main reason being I wouldn't captain him over Aguero much. I got some responses questioning the logic of this.

Maybe I should explain what I meant. IMO you should care more about points per dollar than points per player. If one player cost 11 mil and gets 200 points it isn't anything special if two 5.5s get 150 each.

The exceptions to this are captaincy and money in the bank. With captaincy, you can only captain one guy so you want the big hitters even if their value isn't great. Re money in the bank, it isn't much good if all your players have excellent points per $ but you have 10 mil rotting in the bank/ bench.

So since Haz isn't amazingly good value in terms of points per $, he is only worth it IMO if you either have too much cash to spend OR you will captain him. If you're in a situation where youre happy captaining aguero etc, and you need extra cash, then I think it is perfectly logical to sell him for a period of time.

One argument I do not agree with is that if he scores a brace you'll suffer, since this is only true for individual weeks and what about the weeks he blanks? We need to look at the big picture and not be ruled by fear of variance.

It depends on your other players doesn't it. I see people squeezing in 4.5s around their big hitters when they could spread the love.

The specific example of 5.5 was probably a bad one since it is more relevant for 7 and 8s

      Point made.

But what Andy said.... Hazard takes up 1 spot in your team. The other 2 5.5m mids will have to take up 2 leading to one possibly being benched

I was only messing, I get his point. The better comparison might have been getting a 7m + 4.5m mid where the 7m mid scores 150 and the extra money saved lets you upgrade a player who scores an extra 60 or something.

I do agree with the value of Hazard though and the general point being made.

At the moment I don't see myself captaining him for a good few game weeks and because of this he doesn't represent value. I promoted this on Twitter to a couple of guys and went against my gut before GW1. The money is probably better spent elsewhere.

All expensive players offer diminishing returns in comparison to the midpriced value stars, but since you have the money to spend it's how many points more than a 7.5/8.0m player he gets you that matters. And he will get more. The decision is how you use the money you save on other parts of the team.

For those willing to captain Aguero over Hazard 9 times out of 10, it boils down to something like:

      Hazard - Ozil - Mane - Mahrez - 4.5m

      Aguero - Benteke - Sakho

      or

      Yaya/Sterling - Ozil - Mane - Oscar/Fab - 4.5m

      Aguero - Benteke - Sakho

I also don't get the captaincy argument. You own him for the option of an elite captain, not to force yourself into an inflexible approach where you have to captain regardless of other factors.

He still gets you more points than the so-called value mids, so it's not like you have wasted the money if you think he will score well.

But it's all about the points per £. Just because he scores well doesn't matter if a value mid and the additional money in defence/striker lets you score better.

Points per million is not a straight line, that's what I meant by diminishing returns. The question is really a premium priced versus an auto-complete priced player. If Hazard scores you 7 pts and the value mid gets you 5, you still have 2 more points. The question isn't about value when you get above 7.5m, it's about points. If you think the saved money can best be spent elsewhere, then of course it makes sense.

I don't see how captaincy is relevant though. Unless you want to keep 10m itb, you will have premium players who are poor value and maybe even not worth captaining because if fixtures or form, but their class surely makes them still worth owning.

    rooney > gomis for free..

i am currently 80% set on this transfer unless i can be swayed otherwise.

newcastle have a poor record when it comes to headed attempts, with gomis dominates in aerial duels. rooney looked very poor against spurs and his fixtures are less than appetising

is it worth ditching him for gomis, who has a very kind run of fixtures, whilst also freeing up some cash for one of aguero, hazard or sanchez should they start to fire.
