For the second consecutive Gameweek, Man United edged their way to three points in the most unspectacular style, easily keeping hosts Aston Villa at bay to claim a 1-0 win. Adnan Januzaj was the unlikely hero, bought into the side by Louis van Gaal in the “number ten” role, he took his opportunity with a crafty first-half strike. Meanwhile, our Captain Poll leader Wayne Rooney disappointed his horde of owners with a listless display, as the United back four claimed further returns. Here’s the notes on Friday’s encounter…

Januzaj Stakes a Claim

With rumours of a loan move to Sunderland gathering pace, Van Gaal handed the young Belgian a central attacking role behind Rooney for the Villa Park visit. Januzaj’s first-half strike certainly strengthened his claim for a place in the first XI, with his introduction allowing Memphis Depay to take up the left flank berth he occupied for PSV last season.

At just 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Januzaj would clearly be a steal if he can nail down a regular role, though his withdrawal just before the hour mark perhaps highlights Van Gaal’s reluctance to extend his pitch time – the young Belgian started only seven times for the Red Devils in 2014/15. Furthermore, the club’s interest in Barcelona’s Pedro raises further question marks over Januzaj’s place in the overall pecking order.

Lacklustre Rooney Fails to Spark

They may be sitting pretty at the top of the table but, from a Fantasy perspective, it’s fair to say the Old Trafford outfit have failed to impress in the final third.

Van Gaal’s men managed a mere two shots on target last night and, bearing in mind they scored with their only attempt on target at home to Spurs, the lack of spark is a major concern for high-ownership assets such as Wayne Rooney (41%) and Depay (23%). Juan Mata, meanwhile, remains an under-the-radar option – owned by just 7% of Fantasy managers, he grabbed the assist and maximum bonus for a nine-point haul.

Certainly, last night’s decision to shift Depay to the left will give Van Gaal food for thought. Whilst the summer signing fired an eye-catching seven attempts, Rooney failed to produce a single shot over the 90 minutes.

Given that City’s schedule takes a significant turn for the better in Gameweek 4, Rooney and Depay may well be set for significant sales once next week’s home clash with Newcastle is out of the way, as we look to find space for the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva in our 15-man squads. Rooney is already suffering heavy sales, soaring to the summit of the FPL “transfers out” rankings overnight.

Darmian and the Defence Hold Firm

Whilst their forwards toil, the United defence chalked up a second straight clean sheet after keeping Tim Sherwood’s side at bay. The visitors restricted Villa to a single shot on target, with Sergio Romero once again benefitting from David de Gea’s absence to offer the value route into their backline at just 5.0. With uncertainty over the Spaniard’s future, though, Matteo Darmian looks the most profitable pick here; the summer signing – who’s risen to 5.6 – has now picked up a couple of bonus points in each of the first two Gameweeks. Clashes against Swansea, Liverpool, Southampton and Arsenal in the five fixtures directly after the Newcastle match suggests his short-term prospects are perhaps less enticing, though. Quite frankly, United’s rearguard has impressed but has yet to face an opponent that’s provided a sustained and direct threat on goal.

Is GW3 too early to Wildcard?

    Current team:

    Courtois, Hennessy

    Mertesacker, Cedric, Gomez, O'Shea, Huth

    Sterling, Hazard, Walcott, Redmond, Ritchie

    Rooney, Benteke, Sakho

    Wildcard team:

    Butland, Ruddy

    Reid, Alderweireld, Cedric, Gomez, Delaney

    Sanchez, Mata, Payet, Shaqiri, Tadic

    Gomis, Aguero, Deeney

    What do you guys think?

I was planning on waiting till GW5, but Walcott has dropped in price, Courtois, Ritchie & O'Shea are next to drop as well, and I don't think the value of my team will hold out for a decent Wildcard.

        Torn here.

    How's this for a plan -

This week, Rooney > Gomis (assuming Gomis plays well today) then the following week, pop Alexis in for Newcastle.

The downside to Gomis being in would be my front line would be light (Kun, Gomis and Sakho) and the fact I'd then have 3 attacking players against 3 defensive players for GW3.

What are people's thoughts? I'd also able to fit Silva in for Mane for Watford at home. (Assuming I even want to bin Mane off)

Sterling on the basis of one match. But I would sit tight and assess the situation first.

    Currently debating wild carding.
    Currently have:
    Schmeichel/Schwarzer
    Ivanovic/koscielny/Richards/S Taylor/cedric
    Fabregas/sterling/Mane/Walcott/wanyama
    Benteke/Rooney/Diouf

Thinking if I WC I can get rid of Rooney and Theo and Sterling and get Sanchez and Aguero in and drop some other folks too. Maybe see how Mahrez does today.

    Thoughts on wild adding now?
I want Rooney out and Aguero in and don't want to have a 2 point hit!

It's takes the whole good out of the week when you have a captain fail in the early game.that's why I'm on benteke.won't be disappointed till Monday

Not expecting a whole lot more from my captain (Tekkers) in all honesty than what Rooney cappers got yesterday. Genuine lack of captain options bothered me too much in depths of the night. Hence took an 8 point hit and got in Kun and Sanch! 😎

Lack of options? I could have realistically chosen 4 of my team with good reason.

This. I think Benteke is a good pick. Hence why i went him.
Then I had Kane, Mane, Payet, Walcott and the flop Rooney.
I felt like it was a far better week than last options wise

True. It sounds like i'm playing captain hindsight here but Rooney was never a captain option this week for me after his and uniteds first performance of the season coupled with his atrocious record at Villa park the last few seasons.

Yeh i wanted Kane and 83 other different players but like the other 83 i couldnt squeeze him in but i could squeeze in his supplier Eriksen. So i hope he can provide some assists for Kane's goals if he goes off.

Rooney didn't exacly look lethal yesterday.
I was always going to transfer him out for GW4, but might have to do it a week early.
I have 1.5 in the bank, so would need another million to fund Rooney -> Aguero.

    A) Depay -> Payet/7.5
    B) Depay + Rooney -> Payet/7.5 + Aguero (-4)
    C) Rooney to someone else

Very kind by saying he didnt exactly look lethal. I still think Memphis is threatening to score so i would try and find another way to get that 1.0 and then take a hit on rooney to Aguero.

Will give it some thought during the games today. Already pretty stripped in defence, so can't get the million from my backline.
