We move onto Gameweek 3 and, as always, take a look at the Sky Sports game, assessing the recent run of Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point beneficiaries, the transfer trends and also cast an eye over the Scout team and our future plans.

Gameweek 2 Man of the Match Awards

Listed below are the players that caught the eye of the Sky Sports reporters from last weekend’s fixtures achieving the Man of the Match award (worth an additional five points).

Fixture MoTM
Aston Villa vs Man United Daley Blind
Southampton vs Everton Romelu Lukaku
Sunderland vs Norwich Nathan Remond
Swansea vs Newcastle Jonjo Shelvey
Tottenham vs Stoke Stephen Ireland
Watford vs West Brom Odion Ighalo
West Ham vs Leicester Riyad Mahrez
Crystal Palace vs Arsenal Santi Cazorla
Man City vs Cheslea Sergio Aguero
Liverpool vs Bournemouth Christian Benteke

Six midfielders and four forwards claimed the awards last week. A number of budget/mid-price options in midfield are staking a claim for a spot in our squads. Riyad Mahrez now has back-to-back MoTM awards and is the top scorer with 29 points, all for just 6.0m – with a kind fixture list to come, he’s the stand out option at this point. Nathan Redmond, at 5.5m, is also looking a great option – tipped as a MoTM magnet in our previous article, he seems to have also added more goals to his game and looks another good acquisition. Jonjo Shelvey, at 6.3, also looks great value – at 0.2 less than Andre Ayew, he also has the potential for bonus points in his locker and is in fantastic form right now.

Gameweek 2 Bonus Points

Five goalkeepers picked up bonus this week – Boaz Myhill was the only one to also manage a clean sheet and brought in nine points for his owners.

In defence, 14 players grabbed bonus, nine for tackles and five for passes completed. Ashley Williams managed a staggering 102 successful passes and was just one tackle short of picking up both bonus points on offer. His team-mate Kyle Naughton can count himself unlucky as he just missed out on both by six completed passes and one tackle – at 5.3, he is currently looking the best budget defender on offer.

In midfield, there were 14 beneficiaries in total: nine for tackling and seven for passes. Cesc Fabregas and Aaron Ramsey were the two to pick up both and are always in the mix for bonus to help them tick along.
Fantasy Football Scout members can access all information regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

Top Transfers Out

Name Team Value % of Managers
Rooney Man United 9.6 3.1%
Bertrand Southampton 6.5 2.17%
Hazard Chelsea 9.0 2%
Adrian West Ham 4.8 1.97%
Kane Tottenham 9.3 1.9%

Adrian’s three-match ban and Ryan Bertrand’s ongoing injury have seen both subject to heavy sales. A lack of form from Eden Hazard, Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney has persuaded their owners to look elsewhere.

Top Transfers In

Name Team Value % of Managers
Gomez Liverpool 4.7 3.72%
Mahrez Leicester 6.0 3.59%
Aguero Man City 10.0 2.87%
Gomis Swansea 7.7 2.61%
Kompany Man City 7.5 2.561%

Fantasy managers are clearly keen to acquire City’s in-form pair Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany. Bafetimbi Gomis has netted in each of Swansea’s opening fixtures, whilst Liverpool left-back Joe Gomez and Leicester’s Mahrez offer budget-friendly options further back.

Top Five Captains Picked

Name Team Value % of Managers
Aguero Man City 10.0 16.09%
Hazard Chelsea 9.0 10.86%
Rooney Man United 9.6 8.59%
Benteke Liverpool 9.0 7.1%
Sanchez Arsenal 9.7 6.54%

Watchlist

Here I aim to highlight a few differential players with low ownership that I think could be good options in the coming weeks to help you climb the rankings. These will be looked at in three specific price brackets to cater for our available budget. These names evolve with fixtures and form and offer Fantasy managers a nudge in hopefully the right direction.

Budget Mid-Price Premium
Defender Jordan Amavi, 4.9m, 4.2% Glen Johnson, 5.8m, 3.1% Aleksandar Kolarov, 7.2m, 1.8%
Midfielder Marc Albrighton, 5.1m, 4.2% Jonjo Shelvey, 6.3m, 3.6% Yaya Toure, 8.6m, 6.3%
Forward Jamie Vardy, 7.3m, 5.5% Mame Biram Diouf, 7.5m, 1.7% Olivier Giroud, 9.2m, 4.3%

My Team

Adrian
Martin Cathcart Morgan
Hazard Mane Payet Gradel
Aguero Benteke© Sanchez

ITB: 0.4m
Transfers remaining: 36/40
Last week’s points: 67
Overall points: 94
Rank: 51,391

Notes
It’s taken four transfers but I’m happier with my team now and getting it right early is important, so I always afford myself extra changes at the beginning. There’s more to follow in the coming weeks before hopefully – injury permitting – it settles down. With some nice fixtures to follow, David Silva will be coming in for Christian Benteke as the little Spaniard has continued where he left off last season. Sadio Mane and Max Gradel will stay in for now until their schedules turn for the worse and then I’ll reasses the pair, with Swansea assets, Yohan Cabaye and Xherdan Shaqiri on my radar. Adrian managed to pick up a red card against Leicester and is now banned for three matches but I’ll stick by him and just take the hit as I don’t want to use a transfer on a goalkeeper if I can help it.

Captain Plan
I’m undecided whether to bring Memphis Depay in as captain for Benteke in United’s clash against Newcastle. If I do, it gives me two captains for this week but at the expense of a transfer and I’m not sure I would want him long term, so potentially that’s two transfers and I have already used four. It’s one for me to ponder on Saturday morning but at this stage I’ll likely just opt for one captain – in the form of Sergio Aguero – for Man City’s match away to Everton on Sunday. This works out nicely as Aguero will then be my skipper next week on Saturday at home to Watford.

Pedro won't get 10+ in the EPL this season. 9.5 isn't an attractive price at all.

I get the feeling it's a Chelsea premium, had he gone to United he would have been 8.5 IMO

But with Hazard at 11.5 and Cesc at 9.0 they probably figured they could get away with 9.5

9.5 is yes. Think 9.0 at united but champions get a premium.
New signings also do (see otamendi). I still like 9.5 though.
He'll outscore hazard for goals and is 2.0 cheaper.

Who would you rather have as you third Man City player after Kun and Silva?

    A) Yaya

    C) Kolorov

Is Yaya worth the extra £2-3M when Ozil/Caz/Ramsey/Memphis is available?

    WC team: G2G?

    Butand/Myhill
    Kompany, Darmian, Bellerin, Richards, STaylor
    Surman, Silva, Sanchez, Payet, Redmond
    Gomis, Diouf, Kun

For balance I could do Komp -> Kolarov or Silva -> YYT

Depay is still young and will likely blow hot and cold. Even the staff at United apparently think he'll need a season in the league before he's really at his best.

Mata, on the other hand, is an experienced PL player approaching his peak years. He isn't as explosive as Depay but will keep chipping in with goals/assists consistently throughout the season.

    Sanchez £11
    Hazard £11.5
    Silva £10
    = £32.5

    A difference of £6m.

That could make the following difference to the rest of your team...

Depay & Benteke vs Westwood & Sakho

    Or

Courtois, Kompany, Darmian, Kosc vs Myhill, Coates, Muniesa, Francis

If you already have Aguero and intend to captain him then it is worth thinking twice before going all in with the heavy hitters.

When the big hitters are performing, get them in. When they are not like Hazard atm, it's perfectly fine to go without them and strengthen your team elsewhere.

What % of people on here will have their wildcards intact by Wk 6? A lot were planning to use them in Wk 4 to bring in Aguero while another popular option was to use them in the 1st international break in Wk 5.

I'm sure more casuals will hang on to theirs but I think they might become pretty rare among FFS readers.

Quite similar to kine. All for the 352 but I'm going even cheaper on 3rd striker since I will never play him

Is anybody thinking City might end up with 3 at the back?

Mangala on the left, Otamendi on the right, and Kompany in the middle? They're pretty much perfect choices.

It would allow Zabaleta and Kolarov to do serious rampaging, and generally would play to the strengths of the rest of the team.

I guess there's no fixed answer, but he and Silva are likely to play just behind Aguero, probably pretty fluidly.

has Pellegrini ever used 3 at the back? The plan was to loan Mangala but Manuel changed his mind after the chelsea game so I doubt there was a desire to go to 3 at the back

      Nope.

Don't think Pellegrini likes 3 at the back.

So a 3-4-3? Kinda like this:

      Hart
      Kompany - Otamendi - Mangala
      Zabaleta - YYT - Fernandinho - Kolarov
      Sterling - Aguero - Silva

Hmm, interesting but I don't see Pellegrini changing tactics now.

Yeah, like that. I agree that it might not happen, and if it did, it would be after the current system had been found out somehow. Just a thought.

Thoughts on Pedro? Firmly in the wait n see category for me atm. Hazard is obv a lock on the left and the right wing is up for grabs but I can't really see Pedro being a 0 mins a week man and playing week in week out like Hazard.

Except the Arsenal game, when are people planning on benching Butland? Isn't it wiser to use 0.5 on getting a 5.0 def for a 4.5 or a 4.5 for a 4.0 if it's just one or two gamla in the next 10 that you are going to use the back up keeper?

New FPL additions - Pedro (CHE) MID 9.5, Otamendi (MCI) DEF 6.5, Thauvin (NEW) MID 6.5, Diamanti (WAT) MID 5.5, Inler (LEI) MID 5.0

    All seem overrated to me.
Otamendi price is at least bizarre...

    1. applebonkers
      • Has Moderation Rights
      • 16 Years

they've got to price otamendi as if he's going to be a starter as the other way round is far too risky if he then becomes nailed. at that point he's the man city defender who scored 6 goals last season, far more than kompany, mangala and co

      1. sboj
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 8 days ago

I think initial MCI defence seems undervalued coming off last season and would be priced higher at this point. So we pay the 'updated' price for Otamendi at 6.5. There are rumours Mangala is set to go on a loan, I'm not sure, I'm happy that I have Kompany for now, ofc not expecting more goals from him, just that solid rock in my backfield that I can count on.

      2. Bastien
        • 13 Years
        11 years, 8 days ago

Was expecting him at 6.0 max.
Doubt there will be any interest in him when Komp is available at 6.2
Depay got better records than any of the PL mids last season and still came at 8.5

        1. sboj
          • 11 Years
          11 years, 8 days ago

hmm yea, but coming of lower league, very young and rotation risk kinda, with attacking players they are more valued based on their own skillets than defenders. With Otamendi, I think you are paying the price of a premium defence, which MCI looks to be at the moment.

Like I said, I think Kompany would come at 6.5 or even 7 if there was a remake right now, he came cheap due to horrible season last year, if MCI signed Otamendi earlier, there would be rumours he is not nailed, based on last year.

This year everything is more pricey, it makes all sense. Pedro could go cheaper, but then you pay a bit for the potential as well. Not interested in any of them.

How will Benzema be priced? I would say around 10.5

          1. Bastien
            • 13 Years
            11 years, 8 days ago

10.5 sounds about right. That will defo dent the appeal of Sanchez, since it's too much to have both

            1. sboj
              • 11 Years
              11 years, 8 days ago

I dont think it decreases Sanchez's value. Benzema is not a top scoring striker and a shark like Cavani, he plays more of a supportive role and is used to be next to a dominant wing like CR9 of his left. I think that can actually help Sanchez.
